DAR Daughters everywhere - including members in the greater Lake Tahoe Basin - are eliminating plastic straws from daily routines and rethinking their purchases of single-use plastic items. All members are encouraged to skip using plastic shopping bags, and to participate in consistent plastic recycling.
New partnership created to "Keep Tahoe Bears Wild"

To help spread the message, a new website has been launched, TahoeBears.org, where residents and visitors can go to learn everything they need to know about living, visiting and playing responsibly in bear country.
Funds awarded to combat climate change and reduce wildfire risk at Lake Tahoe

Funds for the project come from an earlier grant to the Conservancy from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) for high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfire.

MARKLEEVILLE, Calif. - Alpine Watershed Group, in partnership with the Great Sierra River Cleanup, will be hosting its 20th annual Markleeville Creek Day on Saturday, September 21, 2019. This event allows for the completion of important restoration work through several projects across the Carson River watershed. Volunteers will have the opportunity to plant willows in Hope Valley, remediate head cuts in Grover Hot Springs State Park, remove invasive and noxious weeds from meadows and riparian zones, or cleanup roads as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program.

The goal of organizers this year is to uplift individuals and spark positivity to make the world a better place. All of the speakers presenting during the evening will use this theme as they inspire attendees.

Multi-agency response to the water and gas leak on Seneca Drive
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/08/2019 - 2:28pmA geyser of water and natural gas on Senaca Drive in Meyers on August 6 brought out a full response from South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Southwest Gas (SWG), Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO).
STPUD responded to the call of a water leak and upon arrival found water gushing from a broken water main. They also smelled gas so called SWG and 911. LVFPD and EDSO secured the area and helped evacuate residents and divert water to minimize property damage.

The entire Lake Tahoe Basin is in the midst of a massive outbreak of the winged beauties, especially in the Angora Fire burn area and along the east shore.
What most people are seeing is the California Tortoiseshell Butterfly, orange and black on the top of the wings, shades of black underneath. They thrive on the Mountain Whitethorn, part of the Ceanothus family, something that itself is thriving where the Angora fire burned in 2007.
Kudos: Community supports growing tennis program
Submitted by paula on Tue, 07/30/2019 - 2:56pmA record 246 people participated in the 36th Tahoe Tennis Classic at Zephyr Cove Park this past weekend. The four-day annual event brought people from throughout the United States to our area for competitive and fun tennis.
The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation. The nonprofit, all-volunteer organization has a contract with Douglas County to operate the six courts. Responsibilities include resurfacing the courts, managing play, and providing instruction for all ages and abilities.

The bay's calm blue water, cascading waterfall flowing into it, the unique island with a tea house, and Vikingsholm Castle beckon more than the photographer with more than 1,000 boats entering the bay daily during the summer. Also visiting the bay are people on canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, campers, hikers, picnickers and beach-goers.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) it partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort once again 'invites the public to 'Hike with a Ranger' beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.

Conservancy votes to allow Oflying Water Control Project to move forward on their land
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/22/2019 - 5:43pmThe California Tahoe Conservancy voted during their board meeting on Thursday to allow El Dorado County to use five of their parcels to develop a water quality project in the Tahoe Paradise neighborhood.
The project will include the construction of conveyance channels and detention basins, and install perforated pipes to infiltrate stormwater, which will increase groundwater recharge and reduce stormwater volumes, peak flows, and stormwater pollutants.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of California Master Food Preserver Program is returning to the South Shore with their Vegetables: Preserve & Serve class on Tuesday, June 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library.
UC Master Food Preservers will explain each step of canning, dehydrating and freezing as methods of preserving vegetables to use throughout the year. This follows up their June 3 class on preserving fruit.

The next phase of the Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project (SSCRP) begins with an open house on its Main Street Management Plan on Wednesday, May 29 at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) office from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to drop in any time.
SSCRP, commonly referred to as the Loop Road Project, will include seven more key components to be completed by the TRPA and Tahoe Transportation District (TTD). The first of those components is the Main Street Management Plan.

Corolla iM evolved originally from the Scion brand, it was a second-generation Scion and when the brand was folded into Toyota it became a Corolla iM. I liked the iM as it had good performance, great styling looking a bit like a lowered and sleeker RAV4 with excellent fuel economy.

The future of Tahoe tourism needs to be sustainable. This year’s Annual Tourism Forum will address this global concern on a local level on Thursday, May 30 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Responsible tourism is something all businesses in the Lake Tahoe basin are working towards and this year’s forum will explore that theme. The forum will include a main keynote speaker, two general sessions, and breakout sessions designed to get a closer look at four key topics.
Annual Lake Tahoe report: 10.5 more feet of clarity in 2018
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/23/2019 - 4:19pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.
In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

Emerald Bay boulder incident draws $50,000 fine for contractor and Caltrans
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/22/2019 - 3:36pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - All involved parties reached a settlement today concerning the May 2018 boulder rolling incident at Emerald Bay. At that time, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) received a complaint about the contractors hired to build a retaining wall at Emerald Bay on SR89. In that complaint, a video was provided that showed equipment pushing a large boulder over the edge of the road as crews cheered. As the boulder rolled it took out or damaged several trees, including a majestic Sugar Pine.
LTUSD calls special meeting to discuss proposed energy efficiency projects and their financing
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/22/2019 - 11:44amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It currently costs the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) $1,073,855 a year to provide natural gas, electricity, and water to their nine locations, which is a cost of $ 1.77 per square foot.
They have been looking at ways to reduce these costs through their Sustainability Committee, and now a "Renewable Energy & Sustainability Committee Implementation Plan" has been presented to the Board of Education.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/18/2019 - 9:21pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Lake Tahoe natural resource and law enforcement agencies remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues, as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

Not all fire is bad fire - Creating healthy forests around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vegetation fires are natural and were normal before policies were created to suppress them for fear of uncontrollable and destructive wildfires as seen in the late 1800s. When some of the first residents arrived in Lake Tahoe between the Gold Rush and Silver Strike, it was common to see just six-seven Jeffrey Pines per acre. Trees in the Tahoe Basin were clear cut to provide the lumber for building mines under Virginia City.

Seasonal dog closure for Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 05/01/2019 - 11:05amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting Wednesday, May 1, the California Tahoe Conservancy will be initiating their seasonal dog closure at the Upper Truckee Marsh in South Lake Tahoe. This annual closure will last through July 31.
The purpose of the closure is to keep dogs out of critical breeding habitat for special, threatened and endangered species such as the Willow Flycatcher.
19th annual Snapshot Day to unveil conditions in Lake Tahoe and Truckee River
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/30/2019 - 8:34amFor the past 18 years, volunteers have been monitoring water quality conditions across the Lake Tahoe and Truckee River watersheds, collecting data at a single point in time to better understand the area as a whole. It is a bi-state collaborative that can achieve a larger watershed approach to successful data collection.
On May 17 and 18, 2019, volunteers will once again head out and perform a variety of tests including temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, algae, and nitrogen.

The forum will take place at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room in South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Spirit Awards highlight ways to protect Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/24/2019 - 7:27pmLAKE TAHOE, Nevada – Five people were recognized at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) meeting Wednesday for their commitment to protecting and enhancing Lake Tahoe’s unique natural environment.
Since 2011, TRPA has awarded the Lake Spirit Awards to individuals from both the North and South Shores who are either citizens or agency representatives/environmental scientists.
Building trails, promoting climate change awareness, organizing beach cleanups, and preserving cultural resources are some of the ways this year’s award winners show their dedication to Lake Tahoe.
