Special Planning Commission meeting to address new building standards and cannabis permit
Submitted by paula on Sat, 01/09/2021 - 6:36pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a special meeting of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 3:00 p.m.
First on the agenda is a possible vote on an update to City Code and the design standards included in it after receiving a grant from the State to do so. There have been public workshops and meetings with contractors and developers, along with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), to get their input on the updates the standards.
Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe commits to annual donation to Boys and Girls Club

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue reopens midtown station
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/27/2020 - 4:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) once again has three fire stations operating in the city limits. Their Station #2 on Lake Tahoe Boulevard in the Al Tahoe neighborhood reopened at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
In 2015 the City had let Cal Tahoe JPA move the ambulance service into the station when SLTFR restructured and moved all ambulance duties over to the JPA. In return they gave up their fire station for five years.
Space cleared to make way for new Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club building

The current South Lake Tahoe site for BGCLT had major clearing this week to make way for a brand new clubhouse. Old portable buildings were removed as were some trees as crews make way for their multi-million dollar future home.
Boys & Girls Club helping out LTUSD by sharing their space; Asks community for help in return

For the last ten months, the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) site has opened the doors on the space they rent from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) and shared with students during the school day.
BGCLT are scheduled to break ground next Spring on a new "clubhouse" that will be built next door, but in the meantime they share each room with staff and students from Sierra House.
El Dorado County's lone juvenile treatment center to be in South Lake Tahoe, for now

After a decision by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors in February, South Lake Tahoe's Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) will be the only youth facility in the county to serve those in the justice system 18-years-old and younger, for now.
There are several reasons for the changes including an aging facility, increasing costs and the fact that fewer youth are working their way through the juvenile justice system.

During their November 13 meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board voted unanimously to approve a ground lease between them and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT), enabling the nonprofit youth club to build on a lot owned by the district adjacent to their current location at Al Tahoe Elementary.

On Friday, August 24, 2018, Lisa "The Angel of Tahoe" Maloff stopped by the club in South Lake Tahoe to not only present the check, but to have fun at the annual end-of-summer party she hosts.
Over 200 current, past and future club members enjoyed a marionette puppet show, the largest bounce houses in local memory, face painting, lunch, ice pops and special angel-shaped cookies by Squishiebaby Sweets in honor of Lisa and all she does for the community.
$5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center celebrated with grand opening
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/16/2018 - 10:00pmA new chapter for Lake Tahoe Community College started Thursday, 32 years after ground broke on the South Lake Tahoe campus, moving the school from an old motel into a new home on Al Tahoe Blvd. Construction is now complete on the $5.8M Lisa Maloff University Center and the doors are open, ready to welcome students enrolled in upper division classes with Sierra Nevada College, Brandman University and Washington State.
On August 16, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to officially open the center, located adjacent to Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

The funds will go to the club's efforts to strengthen the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Community and improve humanity world-wide.
"We're honored that Ms. Maloff trusts our Club with her generous donation," said Club President Ashley Colvin. "We're already making plans to put the donation to good use through the ongoing service and support that we provide to our local community throughout the year."

Wood, the BGCLT Executive Director, spoke in front of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's Trustees, giving them a look into a proposed partnership and future facility use agreement with the District with a new Clubhouse built on District owned property. The Club would fully fund the new building.
New restaurant, pavilion and dock for Round Hill Pines resort

With demolition of the old structure nearly complete, work started last week on a new 3,000-square-foot facility overlooking the beach.
The new building will house a full commercial kitchen, retail space, restrooms, offices for the resort’s management and sales staff, and storage. The seating for the summer bar and grill will be in an open-air pavilion with retractable awnings.
New McDonald's opens in South Lake Tahoe at the Y

Wednesday, September 13, the new 4,305 square foot building with its environmental improvements opened to the public at 11:30 a.m. That was 117 days since we saw old, 40-year-old building come down.
Inside, diners will see a sleek new design with automated ordering stations and plenty of seating.

Those who apply need to reside within the Tahoe Basin portion of EI Dorado County.
Board members hear appeals regarding requirements of the City relating to the use, maintenance and change of occupancy of buildings and structures, including requirements governing alteration, additions, repair, demolition and moving. In addition, they hear appeals relating to new building construction and appeals relating to existing buildings.
Bijou Market Place approved by South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/11/2017 - 8:44pmGoing away is the Knight's Inn, and in its place will be Bijou Market Place. Halferty Development today announced the name of their South Lake Tahoe project that was formerly known as Bijou Park Creek Watershed Management Southwest Corner Project.
During Thursday's Planning Commission meeting, the commissioners unanimously adopted the resolution that certified the project's Initial Study, Mitigated Negative Declaration, Initial Environmental Checklist and Mitigated Finding of no significant affect. They also approved the permits so now Halferty Development can move forward.
Lake Valley Fire Deparment thanks the community

The Ball was given a new theme this year as the fire fighters hosted a sold out elegant event at the Edgewood Tahoe which included fine dining, a presentation by Lake Valley FD Honor Guard, auctioning of firefighters skills such as yard cleanup, car detailing to name a few, an ongoing silent auction packed with dozens of items that were so generously donated to Lake Valley by our community and live music and dancing.
Tahoe Warm Room in new building, ready to serve homeless starting December 15
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/08/2016 - 3:15pmThe cold temperatures of winter have settled in, and with them comes the announcement that the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) is opening their Tahoe Warm Room on December 15 at 7:00 p.m.
TCH has secured a new space at 2179 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe for the winter. There were needed renovations on the building, which has been sitting vacant for many years, pushing the opening date to mid-December.

Even if you change your batteries in the old style alarm annually, their life expectancy is still ten years. The new sealed smoke detectors which are required in new building codes require no battery change but they too are expected to only last ten years.
Ground breaking at new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence at Barton

It's been 55 years since the Barton family donated the land where the first hospital in South Lake Tahoe was built, and it was in that same footprint of land that the ground was broken for the new center 26,000 square foot center on Tuesday.
Nevada Governor visits Lake Tahoe for Tahoe Beach Club groundbreaking

Remaining residents asked to move; Tahoe Beach Club ready to break ground
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/12/2016 - 4:00pmThe remaining tenants at the Tahoe Shore Mobile Home Park at Stateline, Nev., have been given 90 days to find new housing now that owners of the Tahoe Beach Club will be breaking ground on a 20-acre luxury lakefront condominium project.
This announcement should come as no surprise to the people who own or rent the mobile homes since they were originally told in 2003 that they would have to move so the project could be built.
The Tahoe Beach Club has been 14 years in the making and now it looks like the first shovels will be moving dirt at the new lakeside development by June, 2016.

Two businesses are jumping in on the action, one by opening three new doors, the other moving down a few doors into a new building.
Chad Tripp opened Bear Bottom Bargains two weeks ago at 1950 Lake Tahoe Blvd. He started three thrift stores in the center that also houses Tile Outlet. One store focuses on furniture, another household items and the third one, upstairs, has sporting equipment and clothing.
South Lake Tahoe U-Haul planning big improvements

There are new building codes within South Lake Tahoe's city limits, so, with the new building season coming up, the City has scheduled a contractor's meeting to cover the changes.
The following are just some of the changes that every contractor, designer and homeowner should know:
• Radon requirements will be mandatory.
• Sprinklers for additions could be required.
• Take into account in updating all plumbing fixtures when you improve anything in your house.
• Smoke detectors older than 10 years will need to be replaced whenever you pull a permit.
Changes on the South Shore: Motel gone, restaurant, spa and commercial space on way
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/11/2014 - 10:05pmLast spring the South Lake Tahoe planning commission approved plans for turning the Highland Inn motel into commercial space. Original plans for the space include a spa, restaurant and bar and other businesses.
A sign hanging in the front window of the former motel is advertising space available in the new building along with a photo of the planned rendition.
South Lake Tahoe landmark business to close after 73 years

To make room for the new Bev Mo in South Lake Tahoe, SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes needed to find a new home. A long abandoned restaurant on Hwy89 was torn down, a new building put up and now the two local businesses have a new home.
Truck causes power outage to schools and Bijou area; Resulting fire put out
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/25/2014 - 12:03pmA truck carrying tresses to a new building adjacent to the Beach Retreat & Lodge in South Lake Tahoe hit a power pole, causing a transformer to blow, a small fire and power outages to schools, businesses and homes.
The driver of the truck was lost according to South Tahoe Police, and cut through the Safeway parking lot to try and get to the building through the hotel across the street. As he came out of Safeway onto Johnson Blvd, the truck hit a pole and power lines.
Building razed to make way for Bev-Mo in South Lake Tahoe

The old building was also been home to a bank. League to Save Lake Tahoe and a chiropractor over the years.
Springmeyer Garage in SLT leveled to make room for Auto Zone
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/06/2014 - 7:20pmIn recent years, the Springmeyer Garage was slowly deteriorating and becoming an eyesore, but in its heyday from 1940 into the 1970s it was a thriving service station and car dealership.
Wednesday marked the end of the building which was once owned by Melvin "Buzz" Springmeyer and his wife, Marjorie Johnson Springmeyer from the pioneer South Lake Tahoe family.
It was torn down to make room for an Auto Zone store. Construction crews on site didn't know when building would begin.
South Lake Tahoe Landmark Restaurant Torn Down; New Building on the Way

The building was torn down last week to make way for the future home of SUP Tahoe and South Shore Bikes.

Religious leaders of Roman Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Baha’i, United Methodist, Presbyterian, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Unification Church traditions participated in the dedication ceremony of this new building of Temple Beth Or (House of Light), a Jewish congregation launched in 2009, and read their respective prayers.

Where to buy a Lake Tahoe home...Nevada or California?

Taxes were lower and schools were better so Nevada was more attractive. But is that still the feeling? On the west side of town, two new buildings are under construction and one is for sale: a Raley's gas station at its shopping center at the "Y" and a new California Conservation Corps facility in Meyers, next to Lira's Supermarket, are currently being built, while Sierra Recovery Center is seeking to move out of its location on Emerald Bay Road.
The CCC's motto is "Hard Work, Low Pay, Miserable Conditions and More . . . " But things are about to get a little more comfortable for both corps members and staff.

As the Lakeview Commons project in the middle of town plugs along, a building is taking shape near the El Dorado Beach boat ramp.
The two-story structure is intended, like most of the project, to enhance beachgoers’ experience at El Dorado Beach, as well as consolidate a number of different uses into one safe and secure location.
