South Lake Tahoe landmark business to close after 73 years

The year was 1941. WWII is in full swing in Europe. Captain America appeared in a comic book for the first time. Bread was 8 cents a loaf and the average salary was $2,050 a year. Cecil Caple opened Cecil's Market in South Lake Tahoe.

It's the end of an era on the South Shore this Sunday when Cecil's Market closes its doors for the last time. For 60 years Cecil's Market & Delicatessen thrived on the corner of Park Avenue and Highway 50. A wrecking ball demolished the original building in 2000 to make way for the Heavenly Village but Cecil's reopened in a new building down the street, Cecil's Plaza, in 2003.

Cecil Caple's original store thrived in summer months and sold a wide slew of items. It was even the Post Office for awhile. The market and deli endured even before people came to South Lake Tahoe during the winter months.

The building has been sold to the folks from Vail/Heavenly and Sunday, September 19 will be the last day for the market. The adjoining boutique closed last week. The Stateline Brewery downstairs is still open and they just signed a one year lease.

According the Cecil's management the other retail shops in Cecils Plaza, a beauty salon and mortgage company are remaining open but they don't know what Heavenly's plans are for the old market and boutique.
