Responsible recreation is urged over the 4th of July weekend at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With months of people being under "Stay at Home" orders, and if the past few days are any indication, this holiday weekend will be busy at Lake Tahoe as people get out in the fresh air, hike, bike, go to the beach and get on the water.

The July Fourth holiday at Lake Tahoe will look a bit different this year with firework shows canceled, social distancing, the requirement of face coverings in public places and growing concerns about responsible recreation.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Elevating Humanity is the theme of the 4th annual TEDx South Lake Tahoe at the Lake Tahoe Community College's Duke Theatre on Saturday, October 19, 2019.

The goal of organizers this year is to uplift individuals and spark positivity to make the world a better place. All of the speakers presenting during the evening will use this theme as they inspire attendees.

So far, three speakers have been revealed and over the next few weeks, the other seven will be introduced on the TEDx website, http://tedxsouthlaketahoe.com.

Is Lake Tahoe's Emerald Bay at a crisis due to too many visitors?

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed spots in the world, with most of the Lake Tahoe's 20 million annual visitors stopping by for at least a glimpse of its breathtaking beauty.

The bay's calm blue water, cascading waterfall flowing into it, the unique island with a tea house, and Vikingsholm Castle beckon more than the photographer with more than 1,000 boats entering the bay daily during the summer. Also visiting the bay are people on canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, campers, hikers, picnickers and beach-goers.

SLTPD honors and promotes during National Police Week

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) held the annual awards ceremony Thursday, honoring the retirement of K9 Tara, the promotion of Jeff Roberson to Sergeant, awards for bravery and for service.

The celebration was started with the National Anthem sung by South Tahoe High School senior Caroline Krolicki and a presentation of the colors by the department's Honor Guard.

South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and Sierra-at-Tahoe chosen as Lakeview Commons concessionaires

A passionate, supportive and large crowd backing South Tahoe StandUp Paddle (STSUP) showed up at Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting as the Lakeview Commons concessionaires were decided.

By an unanimous vote, the five members of Council voted to approve STSUP for the non-motorized concession going against what the input of staff appointed to review the proposals. Sierra-at-Tahoe was approved for the food and beverage concession by a vote of four-to-one.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - There may be new vendors at Lakeview Commons this summer. At the 9:00 a.m. South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 20, City staff will present the results of the bidding process for concessionaires at both the food and beverage concession and non-motorized watercraft rental service.

Staff's recommended concessionaires are Sierra-at-Tahoe for the food and beverage services at Lakeview Commons, and Tahoe City Kayak and Paddleboard for the watercraft rentals. The Council will take their consideration into their vote.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel wins guest relations award

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel won top honors at the California Hotel & Lodging Association “Stars of the Industry” awards for their "My Tahoe" guest relations program.

The annual awards recognize lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.

The “My Tahoe” program was born back in 2013 when the property went independent as a Premier Hotel Collection member, and hotel leadership had the opportunity to reimagine guest experience.

Woman rescued from Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

6/12/17 8:00 p.m. update - The woman who was rescued from the river, Stephanie Waggoner of Minden, Nev., has died as result falling off her paddleboard in South Lake Tahoe. The Washoe County Coroner's Office will likely release the cause of death Tuesday or Wednesday.

A 50-year-old woman from the Carson Valley nearly drowned in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday after she fell off her paddle board and got caught underwater in the cold and swift Upper Truckee River.

South Shore resident Rosie Parker is fighting esophageal cancer, and a Lake Tahoe benefit concert is being held to help her and her family with growing expenses on Friday, October 21 from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at Cold Water Brewery.

“We are showing our love, we are showing our support for Rose,” said Cold Water owner Debbie Brown, “Our brewmaster’s wife was diagnosed with esophageal cancer back in August, and she is fighting the fight of her life.”

Jobe SUP 2 the People paddleboard demo tour at North Shore

An international paddleboard company, Jobe Sports, will be at Hidden Beach in Incline Village on Saturday, August 13 from noon to 2:00 p.m. They are offering a free paddleboarding event where rigid and inflatable paddleboards will be available for everyone to test out.

They'll also be giving away sponsored swag and gifts as well.

The Jobe Sports month-long tour started in San Diego in July and has made it to Lake Tahoe.

Agencies to continue search for body of missing UNR paddleboarder

The search for Marc Ma, the 20-year-old University of Nevada Reno football player who went missing after a paddleboard outting on Lake Tahoe with teammates, will resume on Thursday, June 16.

The Tahoe Dive Team and volunteers from the Placer County Sheriff's Office will be joined by Kern County Sheriff's deputies and an out-of-state company to search for Ma who went missing on the afternoon of June 10 when winds came up and created dangerous conditions including 3- to 5-foot waves.

Search called off for UNR football player missing in waters of Lake Tahoe

Search teams have suspended the search for a paddle boarder who went missing Friday night off of Obexer’s Marina on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office reported Saturday, June 11 that two days of searching have not recovered Marc Ma, a 20-year-old football player for the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

South Lake Tahoe teen named Youth of the Year

Mya Rossi has been named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls club of Lake Tahoe because of her outstanding contributions to both the club and her community.

Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.

South Shore projects win TRPA's Best in Basin Awards

Several South Lake Tahoe projects were awarded this week by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) as being the "Best in the Basin" for demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.

The projects that were recognized upgraded highways, built new bike trails, improved water quality, restored environmentally-sensitive areas, remodeled blighted commercial buildings, and created defensible space for better wildfire protection.

22nd Annual Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood

Edgewood Tahoe is the home of the 22nd annual Boys & Girls Club Golf Tournament on Monday, October 12. The event raises over $40,000 each year to support the work of the club, which assists more than 600 local kids throughout the year.

This popular day of golf, food and fun normally sells out so early registration is recommended.

Autopsy: Contra Costa sheriff's deputy drowned in Lake Tahoe

A Contra Costa Sheriff's deputy who died trying to rescue his friend who he believed was struggling in choppy Lake Tahoe waters earlier this month died from drowning, an El Dorado County Sheriff's official said Wednesday.

The preliminary autopsy report determined Carlos Francies, 30, of Sacramento, drowned on Aug. 13, according to the El Dorado coroner's office. A final report is weeks away, the department said.

Stand Up paddle races and concert at Tahoe Paradise Park Sunday

On Course Events presents Music in the Park and Tahoe Games Standup Paddle Races at Tahoe Paradise Park on August 23 and September 13.

“Bringing events to this gem of a venue has been a dream for On Course Events for many years,” states Leslie Schultz of On Course Events. “We’re excited to bring people together with great music and recreation in such a beautiful location!”

The new community event series begins at Tahoe Paradise Park with the Tahoe Games Standup Paddleboard Races from 2:00 p.m to 4:00 p.m. The race will be on a custom course built across Lake Baron.

Missing Lake Tahoe paddle boarder found in Missouri

The man who gained national attention when he went missing from his paddle board in South Lake Tahoe has turned up in Missouri.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) investigators had been working on the case since he disappeared on Wednesday, not knowing if he were dead or alive. The floating paddleboard with GoPro camera was found floating about 1/2 mile off shore by the Timber Cove Marina.
