SBA and Treasury announce re-opening of PPP loans for businesses
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2021 - 11:43pmThe U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), in consultation with the Treasury Department, have reopened the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) for new borrowers and certain existing PPP borrowers.
The PPP will open to all participating lenders shortly thereafter. Updated PPP guidance outlining Program changes to enhance its effectiveness and accessibility has been released in accordance with the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Non-Profits, and Venues Act.
Tahoe Fund donors meet the Tahoe Blue Vodka challenge - $200,000 raised to clean Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/05/2021 - 11:09amLAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif - The Tahoe Fund announced today that Tahoe Blue Vodka’s generous $100,000 match has been met, allowing the nonprofit Clean Up The Lake to begin its massive effort to remove trash around all 72-miles of Lake Tahoe this spring. Support to meet the match was overwhelming, with the matching $100,000 coming from more than 135 businesses and people donating to the cause, including $25,000 from Vail Resorts.

COVID-19 case update for Lake Tahoe area counties

Of those, 14 are in El Dorado Hills, 17 in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, 23 in Greater Placerville, 4 in Diamond Springs/El Dorado, 3 in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, 6 in North County, 2 in South County, 0 in Lake Tahoe region. Awaiting address confirmation: 1. Total now awaiting address confirmation: 58.
Of those new cases, 6 are under the age of 18, 29 are age 18-49, 16 are aged 50-64, and 19 aged 65 or older. Total date of birth unknown: 4
South Lake Tahoe City Council starts off the new year with a meeting Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/31/2020 - 3:09pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council will hold their first scheduled meeting of 2021 on Tuesday with discussion and possible vote on new proposals from the the City of South Lake Tahoe response to COVID-19, a summary of the new housing program and near term rental housing strategies, and the 2020 Lake Tahoe Airport Economic Impact Study findings.
The January 5 meeting starts at 9:00 a.m. and can be viewed on Channel 21 or online.
The agenda also includes consent items:
- Emergency Order No. 6 which authorizes cannabis retailers to temporarily operate curbside pickup.

Beneath the surface, thousands of pounds of trash are breaking apart and impacting the lake’s aquatic habitats. In 2021, an extraordinary effort to remove trash around all 72-miles of Lake Tahoe with a SCUBA dive team of professionals and volunteers will begin. Spearheaded by the nonprofit Clean Up The Lake, the Tahoe Fund has committed to raising funds needed to make it happen.

Surge of COVID--19 cases in Alpine County concerns health officer

Alpine County, population about 1,200, includes the towns of Markleeville, Woodfords, Kirkwood and Bear Valley. While not big, Alpine County is experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases just like the rest of the country.

South Tahoe Now reached out to the candidates and below are their answers to a set of questions. For the two four-year terms, incumbent Kelly Sheehan is running for reelection, Duane Wallace is running after being appointed to fill Jim Jones's spot on the board until this election, and they are joined by David Peterson.

53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/08/2020 - 4:10pmLocal nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.
Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.

New Jersey man's body found in Lake Tahoe seven weeks after boat washed ashore

Ryan Normoyle, 29, had rented a boat from the Ski Run Boat Company on August 10, 2020. That night, the boat washed ashore in Glenbrook, Nevada but Ryan was not with the boat.
Deadline September 30 for South Lake Tahoe COVID-19 receipts
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/25/2020 - 9:24amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe created two programs to help local business owners during COVID-19, a restaurant vouchers and reimbursement of expenses used to open under new health protocols.
Both of these will be ending at the end of the City's fiscal year on September 30.
During the City Council meeting Tuesday, staff reminded everyone in the business community to turn in their receipts and restaurant vouchers by that date.
Type 3 fire team takes control of 1,667 acre Fork Fire
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/24/2020 - 10:10amControl of the Fork Fire transferred to a local Type 3 team today. The fire was remapped and is 1,667 acres and is 70 percent contained and is located north of Pollock Pines and west of Lake Tahoe, burning in the Crystal Basin/Gerle Creek area. Strategy on the fire will remain the same with emphasis on clearing contingency lines distant from the main edge of the fire in case the fire begins to move.
Forest and fire managers would like people to be aware that while the fire closures are being reduced, there is still fire activity in the area.

Fork Fire re-mapped at 1,647 acres and continues to be 7% contained
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/11/2020 - 7:18pmThe Fork Fire continues to burn west of Lake Tahoe in the Rubicon drainage area near Loon Lake. The size has been remapped and 1,647 acres have burned and it is seven percent contained.
The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has downgraded the mandatory evacuation order to an evacuation warning for the areas of Quintette, Stumpy Meadows and Volcanoville. This does not supersede the temporary closure order that prohibits entering or using National Forest System lands, roads and trails on the Eldorado National Forest.

Benjamin Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
Listed below are ways those in the South Lake Tahoe can start to plan, in hopes the plans never have to be used.
If there were just two things residents should know, South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Clive Savacol said it would be to "evacuate early" and "have a plan."
Red Flag Warning and Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/07/2020 - 3:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has changed their previous Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday, September 8 from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
They have also issued a Special Weather Statement and a Lake Wind Advisory for Tuesday from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

This warning is in place due to gusty winds and low humidity for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Western Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierrs, and Eastern Nevada Counites. Fire Zone 271 and Fire Zone 272.

Of those, three are in each the Lake Tahoe Region and Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, five in El Dorado Hills, one each in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz and Greater Placerville. In this group of new cases are nine aged 18-49, three aged 50-64 and one aged 65 or older.
Another 205 people were tested for the coronavirus and 192 negative tests results were received.

Three vie for the one allowed cannabis retail location in Meyers

After the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted in May to add two Meyers Area Plan zoning districts that would allow cannabis business, the process began to award a license.
Tahoe Youth & Family Services holds "Miles for Recovery" virtual event

September is National Recovery Month for both substance abuse and mental health. In recognition of this, Tahoe Youth & Family Services is partnering with Carson Valley Medical Center and providing a Miles For Recovery virtual challenge fundraiser.
This fundraiser will replace the organization’s annual 5K event at the beginning of Carson Valley Days that was canceled because of the pandemic.
Fundraising, donations and grants are the only source of income for the 501c3 nonprofit.

Barton Foundation awards $100,000 in community health grants
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/18/2020 - 11:45amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Barton Foundation has awarded a record $100,000 in its annual Community Health Grant funding. This is in addition to more than $170,000 in grants given to local families and individuals from its COVID-19 Response Fund.
The 13 Lake Tahoe-based organizations that were awarded share Barton Health’s commitment to addressing the most urgent health needs in the area: mental and behavioral health, substance use, and access to care.
The organizations selected for a Community Health Grant serve the area’s most vulnerable populations and those in need:

Twenty-one of those are in El Dorado Hills, twelve in the Lake Tahoe area, seven in Placerville, four in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, three in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, and two in Diamond Springs/El Dorado.
Of the new cases, six are under the age of 18, 30 are aged 18-49, eight aged 50-64 and five aged 65 and older, 23 are male and 26 are female.
635 new tests were administered.

It is referred to as having a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. While a mental health issue has unique symptoms and requires different treatment from those of a substance use disorder, they affect each other greatly.
