Kids who collected 44,000 dimes visit burned firefighter

For collecting $4,402 — the equivalent of 44,020 dimes —for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, they got a wave and a smile from Pete Dern, the Fresno fire captain who is recovering from severe burns he got while battling a blaze.
“It made his day,” said Dern’s wife, Kelly Dern, who accepted a check from the students for the burn center.
“His face lit up,” said Dern’s daughter, McKenzie Dern.

Most of the horses found near death in El Dorado County have been adopted

"We want to thank everyone in the community and all the volunteers who either adopted a horse or provided support to our agency through this process," said Don Ashton, Director of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, which includes Animal Services.

Lake Tahoe’s Tallac House from ‘The Bodyguard' Lists for $8M

(Cue a Houston ballad.)
Off the silver screen, that same 76-foot-long pier and the property attached to it are known in real life as Tallac House, which just listed for $7,995,000 in South Lake Tahoe, CA.
The insanely ornate, all-wood, 3,000-square-foot house has had its Hollywood close-up. Twice. More on that in a moment.

Horses available for adoption in El Dorado County

Their saga began at a ranch in Susanville, CA where 90 horses were found near death. The horses where brought to an El Dorado Hills group, Grace Foundation, after officials from Wells Fargo and Bank of America found them starving and uncared for on the property they where they held the note.
Former Lake Tahoe resident Terrie Q. Sayre
Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/23/2015 - 5:10pmFormer South Lake Tahoe resident Terrie Q. Sayre passed away Friday in her home in Albuquerque, NM at the age of 54 following a short illness. Sayre, a former Miss Nevada, was the News Director for KTHO and KOWL while in South Lake Tahoe. She made her mark while on the South Shore and in Reno where she was a news anchor on KOH and host of a real estate TV show.
News reports out of New Mexico say that Sayre, who was an on air personality on KKOB 770 in Albuquerque, died after an illness. A close friend of Sayre's told KOB Thursday evening she had been battling the flu for a month.

The 22 groups were each given between $1,000 and $3,000. For the first time in its 66 year history, the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (IKAR) will be coming to the USA for its annual Congress. Hosted by the US Mountain Rescue Association, the event will be held at Harvey’s Resort and Casino, Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
Douglas County Search and Rescue (SAR) is helping the host put on the conference which includes local hiking and tourist activities.

Update: Meadow Fire in Yosemite has burned over 2,500 acres
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/07/2014 - 6:05pm9/8/14 6:45 p.m. update: The Meadow Fire in Yosemite grew considerably overnight and has burned about 2,582 acres so far. What started as a small fire after lightning on August 16 got out of control on Sunday.
According to Yosemite's website, it is burning within the Little Yosemite Valley on both sides of the Merced River. All trails in the area are closed. Earlier Monday, approximately 100 hikers and backpackers were evacuated from the fire area in LYV. The fire is burning in Yosemite Wilderness.

Tahoe Queen gets stuck: 258 passengers transported to safety
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/04/2014 - 7:39pmWhat started off as a leisurely 90 minute cruise on the Tahoe Queen turned into quite the adventure for passengers on board Monday afternoon.
The boat was about 30 minutes into its Emerald Bay cruise when it became stuck on a sandbar. At about 3:30 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Department received a call that the Tahoe Queen was stuck off the Regan Beach shore. It is not known at this time why emergency personnel weren't called to the scene until 90 minutes after the Tahoe Queen got stuck.
Helicopter aides in search for man in South Lake Tahoe this evening
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/30/2014 - 9:21pmA missing man from the Fair Meadows Court area of South Lake Tahoe prompted a search by a CHP helicopter, El Dorado County Sheriff's officers and Search & Rescue Wednesday evening.
The man, a 66 year old from Pleasant Hill, CA, went out for a walk with his Siberian Husky late in the afternoon. When he didn't return to the home he and his brother and sister-in-law were staying at on Fair Meadows Court within an hour, his family became worried.

Lake Tahoe Holiday Crowds Keep Law Enforcement and Fire Departments Busy

He was commenting on the increased number of calls his department received on the the 4th of July when tens of thousands of visitors come to the Lake Tahoe basin to celebrate. When more people come to Lake Tahoe the fire department sees a large increase in service calls.
"Our rescue crews were kept busy," according to Guevin.
"Heavenly" the Bear Headed to Wildlife Sanctuary in Arizona
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/17/2014 - 9:02pm"Heavenly" the bear cub that recuperated at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care after being found injured on the slopes of Heavenly has found a permanent home. He will be living on a 5 acre wildlife sanctuary in Scottsdale, Arizona with a couple of other cubs.
According to LTWC co-founder and Secretary/Treasurer Tom Milham, Heavenly left South Lake Tahoe early Tuesday to his new home, Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center. The bear had been with LTWC since March 3.

The Tahoe Youth and Family Services Board of Directors has announced that Christopher Croft will take the position as the agency's new Executive Director. Croft comes to TYFS from Tacoma, Washington where he was the Family Division Director of The Rescue Mission, a non-profit agency that provides shelter, counseling and meals for homeless men, women and children.
Search Continues near Ice House Reservoir For Missing Man

Sheriff D’Agostini is still dedicated to determining Cody’s location and search operations are continuing. Search and Rescue personnel from El Dorado, Solano, Placer and Contra Costa Counties are on scene along with personnel from the Bay Area Mountain Rescue team and the California Rescue Dog Association. A helicopter from the California Highway Patrol will also be assisting in todays search.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Search and Rescue are searching for 11 year old Romeo Obrien who was last seen at 2 p.m. in the Gardnerville Ranchos near Patricia Court.
Romeo is 5'3" tall, has brown hair and brown eyes with a scar under his left eye. He was last seen wearing a blue DARE shirt and blue shorts.
Romeo’s last known direction is unknown. Romeo has been entered into NCIC as a missing person.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Honors Firefighters and Staff

Fourteen firefighters were recognized with service awards, including 20 year veterans Battalion Chief Jim Antti and Captain Chuck Salerno.
“Fire Chief Ben Sharit challenged 20 new firefighters and staff members to continue the important work we do every day in our community,” says Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal spokesperson for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.
Report of Floating Body on Cascade Lake Brings Out Search Teams
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/11/2014 - 5:43pmA hiker in the area of Cascade Lake reported seeing a floating body on the lake Wednesday afternoon. The Lake Tahoe local woman was hiking on the north east side of Cascade Lake near the shoreline when she thought she saw a body float up towards the surface and then sink down and out of view.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue volunteers and CALSTAR responded to the vicinity of the sighting but did not find any evidence of a floating body.
9 Year Old Hailed a Hero After Lake Tahoe Area Snowmobile Accident
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/09/2014 - 9:19pmNine year old Bode Bierdneau of Marin County is credited with saving his father after a snowmobile accident near Blue Lakes in Alpine County on Sunday.
The two were each riding their own snowmobiles when Bode's father, John Taylor (JT), lost control and crashed into a tree and was partially ejected. He was partially trapped under his Skidoo as his left leg became entangled with the machine. Bode dug out his father, but with his dad's femur broken he couldn't walk.

"The event is being called to show the Reno and Sparks City Councils and the Washoe County Commission that citizens mean business when it comes to a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in retail stores in Reno, Sparks and Incline Village," stated Billy Howard, Founding Organizer for the popular initiative Puppy Mill Free Reno/Sparks/Washoe.
Two Hiking Groups Get Lost In South Lake Tahoe Area Friday; Both Found Safe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/17/2014 - 4:16pmEl Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue teams were called out twice on Friday evening, once to the Cascade Falls area and the other to Vikingsholm.
The first call came in just before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15. Two women from Illinois were hiking near Cascade Falls and became lost. They called 911. While waiting to be located, the women came across other hikers who assisted them in returning to the camp ground where they were met by Search and Rescue at approximately 6 p.m. No injuries were reported.

During the ceremony, employees and community members were recognized for exemplary actions and service. Prior to them receiving their awards, a review of their actions that warranted recognition was read to attendees. These actions included traumatic life threatening situations, major investigations and exemplary work performance. Those from the South Lake Tahoe portion of El Dorado County are in bold:

Movie Night at Lake of the Sky Outfitters

February 28, 2014 - 7:00pm Lake of the Sky Outfitters will be showing the film "Storm over Everest" on Friday February 28th at 7:00pm. This gripping story is about the 1996 tragedy on Mt. Everest which was originally chronicled in the book "Into Thin Air". Produced by American climber and film maker David Breashears who was on the mountain as the events unfolded on that fateful night and participated in the rescue attempts. He takes us back to the mountain and also interviews survivors of the event.

South Lake Tahoe's 2nd Annual Holiday Parade on Saturday

The 2nd Annual South Lake Tahoe Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday, December 14. Spectators will line the parade route from the top of Ski Run Blvd to TJMaxx at the Y. When the parade starts the forecast is sunny and 40 degrees.
American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.
