Prescribed burns continuing in Lake Tahoe basin

Prescribed fire operations are set to continue this week in the Lake Tahoe Basin, as long as the weather allows burning. California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service have projects planned near Burton Creek, Sugar Pine Point and D.L. Bliss state parks. On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place on Spooner Summit and near Camp Galilee. On the South Shore, operations may take place near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School and off Highway 89 near Spring Creek.

CHP officer hit on 1-80 succumbs to his injuries

The California Highway Patrol officer who was hit by a SUV on Interstate 80 Saturday has succumbed to his injuries.

Nathan Daniel Taylor was struck by the vehicle as he was investigating a traffic collision in the area of westbound I-80 at Castle Peak Road in the Gold Run area.

The officer suffered major injuries, including two broken legs and internal injuries, and was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, NV, where he succumbed to his injuries late Sunday night.

Slow moving exodus from South Lake Tahoe

All day Sunday the traffic heading west out of South Lake Tahoe has been slow moving due to snow, stuck cars, avalanche controls and chain restrictions.

Even with a educational push by the City for travelers to not use the side roads as they travel home, roads such as Upper Truckee, Sawmill and Mandan were heavily traveled by drivers trying to find a quicker way home.

Chains or 4WD vehicles with snow tires are required on higher elevation roads tonight, with chains or snows over SR-267.

St. Patrick's Day DUI checkpoint in South Lake Tahoe

With St. Patrick's Day being one of the biggest holidays centered around partying, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department is having a DUI Checkpoint as well as extra patrols on the roads to help lower deaths and injuries.

The checkpoint will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The location has not been disclosed.

Carson City man arrested on slew of charges in El Dorado County

An early morning armed robbery in Camino, Calif., led to the arrest of 22-year-old Aaron Friesen of Carson City on charges of robbery, vehicle theft and on an outstanding felony warrant for domestic violence.

At 5:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, the Wine County Station just off Highway 50 was robbed at gunpoint with the suspect getting away in a vehicle. An alert witness at the scene gave law enforcement detailed information about both the suspect and the vehicle used in the getaway.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Deputy on paid leave has third DUI

John "Tony" Broadfoot, a deputy with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol on March 4 on charges of driving under the influence after an accident in the Shingle Springs area. This was Broadfoot's third DUI arrest in as many months.

On December 8, 2015, Broadfoot was placed on administrative leave after being arrested on DUI charges by the CHP in South Lake Tahoe. Then on February 25, 2016, he was arrested, again by CHP officers, when found to be under the influence after rolling his vehicle near Ice House Road and Highway 50.

"Brave the Shave" St. Baldrick's event to raise money for childhood cancer research

The event has already raised over $45,000, even though the shaving doesn't begin until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. This is the fifth consecutive year for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation event, Brave the Shave for Kids with Cancer, in South Lake Tahoe. They have moved it this year to the Heavenly Mountain Resort California Lodge located at 3860 Saddle Road.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Carolyn Batchelor 1946-2016

We lost a beautiful, vibrant spirit much too soon. Our beloved Carolyn Batchelor left us February shortly after Valentine's Day, and our hearts are broken.

Carolyn Wands was born in Nampa, Idaho. She was the only child of Dr. Robert and Eileen Wands. At the age of eighteen Carolyn moved to Ontario, California, with her husband, Steve Batchelor. She, Steve, and their children lived in Cucamonga and Crestline.

Lake Valley Fire maintenance shop earns honor

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) has received the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Blue Seal of Excellence Certification. This makes their maintenance shop one of only two facilities in the Tahoe Basin to receive this distinguished honor. Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

2:45 p.m. 2/28/16 update:

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.

At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Widespread prescribed burns to continue around Lake Tahoe

Weather permitting, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service are planning on continuing their prescribed fire operations next week beginning Monday, February 29, 2016.

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor.

On the South Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Spring Creek, Panther Road, and Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Sawmill Road.

Caltrans looking at roundabout or traffic signal in Meyers

Due to the unsafe intersection of Highway 50 and State Route 89, Caltrans is looking at safety improvements in the area to reduce collisions, and their severity. At this time, the preferred option for Caltrans is adding a roundabout at the intersection to improve conditions after a reported seven accidents at the intersection.

The estimated $3.1 million project is scheduled for construction in 2018-19. It is currently in the environmental phase, with the environmental document scheduled to be finalized in November 2016.

This year promises to be what I think will be an exciting one in part because of its host: comedian Chris Rock. Talk about perfect timing, huh? South Lake Tahoe group wants local voters to determine Loop Road future

Three former South Lake Tahoe City council members and a local environmental activist have formed "Let Tahoe Decide," a committee to force the Loop Road/Hwy 50 Revitalization Project to go to the voters.

A "notice of intent to circulate petition" was submitted to the SLT City Clerk Susan Alessi on February 23, 2016.

NDOT dismantles boulder that fell on Highway 50 between Glenbrook and Cave Rock

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, Nevada Department of Transportation crews started the dismantling process of the large boulder that fell onto Highway 50 northeast of the Cave Rock tunnel Saturday night.

The large boulder rolled onto the roadway, causing damage to the road and guardrail, but no injuries or vehicle damage, at approximately 6:30 p.m. February 20. The size of the boulder is estimated at nine feet wide by six feet high.

Fire operations to continue at Lake Tahoe

California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations started back up today, February 22, 2016.

On the East Shore, operations are scheduled to take place near Logan Shoals Vista Point, Spooner Summit and Sand Harbor. Ten acres on Spooner, 15 acres at Logan Shoals, 150 acres at Camp Galilee and 30 acres at Sand Harbor.

On the South Shore, operations are scheduled near Eagle Point Campground, Spring Creek and Panther Road. Five acres in Angora Creek area, 10 acres on Panther, 30 acres at Emerald Bay.

Large boulder falls onto Highway 50 north of Cave Rock tunnel

A large boulder has rolled down onto Highway 50 on the Lake Tahoe east shore near Logan Creek, causing a dent in the road but no injuries.

The Nevada Highway Patrol was dispatched to the incident at 6:19 p.m. Saturday, February 20. Once there they found the boulder, it was reported to be eight feet across, blocking one lane north of the Cave Rock Tunnel in the westbound lane.

One passerby said the boulder was bigger than their Lincoln Navigator, at least six to seven tall.

End time nears for El Dorado County recall against supervisors, DA and auditor

On October 27, 2015, Sue Novasel, the County Supervisor representing South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Tahoma and Pollock Pines was served a “notice of intent to circulate a recall petition” by a group of citizens who said they are “tired of the corruption and cronyism that has plagued our county for years.” It wasn’t only Novasel, but all five of the County Supervisors, Shiva Frentzen, Ron Mikulaco, Michael Ranalli and Brian Veerkamp.

Highway 50 to be closed in both directions Sunday in El Dorado Hills

The Transportation Division of El Dorado County’s Community Development Agency will implement full closures of both directions of U.S. 50 between El Dorado Hills Boulevard and Bass Lake Road, as well as closures of the Latrobe Road on-ramp to eastbound U.S. Highway 50, the Bass Lake Road on-ramp to westbound U.S. Highway 50, and White Rock Road between Valley View Parkway and Entrada Circle. Closures are as follows:

Eastbound Closures on Sunday Morning, February 21

Eastbound lanes from Latrobe Road to Bass Lake Road will be closed from 6:00 am to 8:00 am.

Storm passing through South Lake Tahoe, chain controls remain

12:30 p.m. update February 18:

The sun is coming out over Lake Tahoe after a quick moving storm left over two feet of snow at the upper elevations, one foot at lake level.

Chain controls remain at this time, with chains are required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires on all 4 wheels from Meyers to Twin Bridges.

South Tahoe and Whittell High boys basketball teams head to playoffs Thursday

The boys varsity basketball teams from both high schools on the South Shore are playing in the Northern Nevada playoffs starting Thursday.

South Tahoe High boys, who are the number three seed in Northern Nevada NIAA Division 1-A, are headed to North Valleys High in Reno Thursday afternoon for their quarterfinal game against Spring Creek at 4:40 p.m. The STHS Vikings are split on the season against the Spartans with one loss, and one win.

South Lake Tahoe woman running across US to bring awareness to obesity

Ari Ramos, a 2004 graduate of South Tahoe High, is running across the country to bring awareness to obesity. She is using all 2,700 miles of the journey to engage with school children and communities about healthy lifestyles.

Ari touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28. Today, Tuesday, February 16, she is 350 miles away in Fort Walton Beach.

Keith Urban adds second show at Harvey's Outdoor Arena

Keith Urban has announced another South Lake Tahoe stop on his ripCORD tour this summer.

"By overwhelming demand, we’ve announced a second show at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's on July 27th," Keith Urban announced on his facebook page. "Tickets go on sale next Friday, February 26th at 10 a.m.. Can’t wait to see you there!!!"

His RipCORD World Tour 2016 will feature Brett Eldredge, who toured with Urban as a special guest on his 2014 Raise ‘Em Up Tour and newcomer Maren Morris.

Help design the future look of South Lake Tahoe

Do you want South Lake Tahoe to look like a ski resort? A modern mecca? A mountain hideaway? Give your input on what future buildings in the city limit should look like at the next City of South Lake Tahoe Design Review Guidelines Public Workshop at Council Chambers on Wednesday, February 17 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This is the second workshop held for the public on design. During the first one last month, participants were able to rate photos of signs, buildings and overall look of a community. Those not attending also participated by completing an online survey.

Highway 89 at Emerald Bay reopens after rockslide

A Valentine's Day rockslide at Emerald Bay closed Highway 89 for about an hour. The California Highway Patrol responded to a call of rocks on the roadway and controlled traffic in the are until a truck equipped with a plow could clear off the slide.

The road reopened at 11:34 a.m.

Prescribed burns to continue on east and south shores of Lake Tahoe

There are seven scheduled prescribed fire operations in the Lake Tahoe Basin this week in the areas of Logan Shoals Vista Point, Camp Galilee, Angora Creek burn area, Round Hill, Shakespeare Rock and the Spring Creek area.

At the Logan Creek Overlook there are 15 acres of hand piles being burned, with an ignition date of February 16 and will continue as conditions allow. Smoke should travel in a north to northeast direction.

Lake Tahoe area roadwork for week of February 15-20

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from the Coloma School House to Mt. Murphy Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Upper Truckee Road to Transit Way in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday for survey work.

With the massive traffic jam created by travelers trying to get out of South Lake Tahoe during the snowstorm January 31, several options have been discussed to prevent a repeat, especially with a large holiday crowd this weekend.

Public gets chance to ask questions about US50 Revitalization project

The public once again had the opportunity to participate in the planning of the US50/South Shore Revitalization plan (also known as the Loop Road) during a meeting held at South Tahoe Middle School Wednesday evening. About 100 people took advantage of having the opportunity.

Community forum in South Lake Tahoe to discuss the "Loop Road" project

A different kind of presentation will be made on the US50/South Shore Revitalization Project this week, one that will include a question and answer period and not just the open house atmosphere of recent Tahoe Transportation District meetings on the project. For the past several years, TTD has been holding public meetings and talking with the community shareholders in order to formulate the best plan for the future of Highway 50 through the Stateline portion of South Lake Tahoe, a plan initiated in 1980.

Hwy 89 road construction by Fanny Bridge may cause delays

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be performing grinding and paving work on sections of State Highway 89 in the Tahoe City area the next three days.

The work will take place from Blackwood Creek Road to and including the Truckee River (“Fanny”) Bridge in Tahoe City. It’s scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 9-11 and will require one-way traffic control.

Pedestrian dies in Washoe Valley accident

An 18-year-old Carson City, Nev., man died early Monday morning after being struck by a car as he was walking on IR-580 in the Washoe Valley.

Just after 1:07 a.m. on February 8, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene just north of the Bellevue Road overpass. Their investigation indicates that Chile Bartels was walking northbound in the slow lane of the highway when a car driven by 42-year-old Sparks resident James Dolan hit Bartels.

Dolan pulled over and parked according to the NHP.
