Tahoe man headed to compete in the Endeavor Games
Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/08/2016 - 1:33pmThe South Lake Tahoe community pulled together behind Ryan Wallace in 2014 when he needed to buy a new prosthetic leg, which even at a discounted $25,000 was out of reach for the native man.
At the age of 19, Ryan had to have his leg amputated due to a rare form of bone cancer. The leg he received was wearing out after ten years, and the community helped Wallace buy the new one so he could walk and get back to coaching wrestling to the youth of the town.
Bill Cottrill promoted to General Manager of Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel

Cottrill, who has been with the property for 18 years, was promoted to general manager effective June 1 by the hotel’s ownership group Premier Hotel Collection.
Cottrill’s long tenure is not unusual for the hotel that enjoys a continuously low turnover rate year after year.
Reno man arrested in Stateline after SLT theft
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/02/2016 - 11:04amMicah Flaherty, 33, from Reno was arrested on Monday evening after word got out about a theft at the South Lake Tahoe K-Mart by a man seen dropping a gun in the store's parking lot.
On May 30, 2016, at 5:10 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff's Office received information about the theft, and that a male suspect was reportedly running toward his vehicle when he dropped, and retrieved, what appeared to be a handgun. The suspect fled in a silver Volkswagen.

Nevada Beach opening two weeks ahead of schedule

The campground and day-use area will open this Saturday, April 30, 2016. Campsites will be available on a first-come, first-served basis until the reservation system is up and running.

Many were hoping to see Steph Curry on the list, but with the Olympic Games in Rio just after the tournament, speculation is that he had to skip the stop in Tahoe.

NHP in Reno responds to over 75 calls during Monday's storm
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/28/2016 - 1:57pmThe Nevada Highway Patrol had a busy day Monday as they dealt with numerous crashes and stuck cars after a "Spring Slider" dumped a foot of snow in many areas in and around Reno.
Between 4:00 a.m. and noon, NHP troopers responded to 25 crashes that did not require medical response, eight crashes that needed ambulances, and over 45 motorists that needed some sort of assist.

Julie Pardysz was relocating to Colorado and had the business up for sale. The Tot Spot was on the verge of having to close as no buyers were coming forward. At the last minute, Jen and Chris Bloch made an offer to keep the doors open.
Contest for Nevada high school students to design new welcome signs

In a contest presented by the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Governor Brian Sandoval’s office, the Department of Education and the Department of Transportation, high school student designers have been called upon to create the new signs.
Time is running out and all entries need to be submitted by March 25, 2016.

Missing Spinoni Italiano dogs may have been spotted in South Lake Tahoe

On Friday night, owners Stacey and Lorne Bell were walking the dogs, Mara and Adele, in east Carson City along the Carson River and on the ridges in the Mexican Dam area. As Stacey went to take a photo, the dogs broke loose and took off running, possibly after a rabbit.

The owners of the Spinoni Italiano dogs are Stacey and Lorne Belt. The dogs, Mara and Adele, escaped while the couple were walking.

Erica Mirich hired by League to Save Lake Tahoe as Director of Development

A competitive national search brought Mirich back to Lake Tahoe previously served as director of development for the Lake Tahoe School in Incline Village. Most recently she served as senior director of annual giving for the Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Mirich holds a master’s degree in science education from Harvard and brings classroom experience as a science educator.

First the old farts who decide who gets nominated virtually overlooked every African-American contender which sparked not only outcries from those in the acting community but also wanted Chris Rock to boycott the Academy as well (for those who don't know him Chris Rock is black).

Last year, almost $7,000 was raised to support the agency's programs to prevent child abuse.

Motel and surrounding property could be demolished to make way for new project
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/16/2016 - 9:58pmThe Knights Inn could be purchased by the City of South Lake Tahoe for $6 million should a grant be awarded them by the California Tahoe Conservancy. If that happens, the City would purchase, and then demolish, the motel located on Highway 50 near Ski Run Boulevard to make way for a new environmental and retail project.
There is grant money available through the CTC which the City will apply for. The funds come from the state's Proposition 1 Water Bond which was approved by voters in 2014 to authorize $7.545 billion in general obligation bonds for water projects.
South Lake Tahoe woman running across US to bring awareness to obesity
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/16/2016 - 7:05pmAri Ramos, a 2004 graduate of South Tahoe High, is running across the country to bring awareness to obesity. She is using all 2,700 miles of the journey to engage with school children and communities about healthy lifestyles.
Ari touched the Atlantic Ocean and left Jacksonville, Florida on January 28. Today, Tuesday, February 16, she is 350 miles away in Fort Walton Beach.
Cave Rock tunnel to be extended 60 feet this summer
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/11/2016 - 11:18pmThe westbound, lakeside Cave Rock tunnel entrance will get a makeover this summer, one that will stop rocks from falling onto Highway 50, add lighting to the inside of the tunnel as well as adding water quality improvements.
Devin Cartwright, Supervisor with the Nevada Department of Transportation's Roadway Design Division, spoke to the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association Thursday, giving them a overview of the project that will bring with it one lane of traffic in each direction, causing some traffic delays, 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week from May to October, 2016.
Whittell High senior chosen to be student delegate in Washington
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/10/2016 - 10:40pmNevada Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller have announced that Katherine "Kate" Krolicki has been chosen to be one of 104 student delegates who will be attending the 54th annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C.
"I never thought it'd happen," Krolick said of her being selected. "It's right up my alley and I am so excited to go back to Washington."
The Whittell High School senior has worked in Washington, D.C. twice, once as page for Senator Reid in 2014, and as Senator Heller's intern in 2015.
South Lake Tahoe woman facing brain cancer with friends, family and hugs

Those powerful words come from South Lake Tahoe local Krista Kline Carson.
The 1989 South Tahoe High graduate, wife, mother and wellness coordinator for Barton University, is battling cancer after a tumor removed from her brain was found to be Stage IV Glioblastoma Multiforme, one of the fastest growing brain cancers. On Monday, January 18 she begins a six week regime of radiation and chemotherapy.

When I’m having a bad day, feeling like what we do doesn’t matter or just isn’t enough, I re read this story and it reminds me that as long as we keep trying and never give up we are making a difference. The second winner was announced today, just for shopping on the South Shore and submitting her receipts. Edita Sirusaite won ski tune, demo or rental from Powder House and is now in the running for the grand prize at the end of the year. Last week, Jennifery Lay won the first weekly prize.

Family of six rescued from snowy cliff in El Dorado County
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/01/2015 - 8:26pmA father and his five children were rescued by the California Highway Patrol after becoming stranded in a wooded and snowy area of El Dorado County for hours, according to officers.
The family of six went on an off-road excursion about 8 a.m. in the Ice House Reservoir area, but realized they were lost soon after.
The Elk Grove father named Ed called the CHP about 2:30 p.m. and told them that his pickup truck had begun sliding toward a cliff, and that he had been holding the brake pedal with both feet for some time to prevent it from going over the edge, the CHP said.
Fernley man arrested for string of burglaries; WCSO offers home safety tips
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/28/2015 - 9:08amWashoe County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a burglary suspect in Caughlin Ranch early this morning after the suspect attempted to elude deputies who were investigating a series of home and vehicle burglaries.
At approximately 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2015, deputies responded to the area of Longknife Road and Caughlin Parkway on a report of a vehicle burglary that had just occurred. Deputies canvassed the area and identified two burglarized vehicles. Deputies also discovered that the suspect had used garage door openers to enter and burglarize the residences.
Plan for heavy traffic during Thanksgiving holiday

American Century donates $55,500 to Lake Tahoe non-profits

A man was videotaped as he was kneeling down in an aisle next to some electronic tablets at approximately 7:08 p.m. He opened a box containing a tablet and its accessories, put them in his pants pocket, and exited the store without paying for the items.

The whole community is invited to help clean up Sierra-at-Tahoe during the 9th Annual Keep Sierra Clean Day on Sunday, October 11, 2015. Ride up the Nob Hill chairlift, sweep the mountain of trash and enjoy live music and free lunch on the Solstice Plaza.
In past years, thousands of pounds of trash has been cleared from the summer slopes, brought in by loyal passholders and employees along with community groups and organizations such as the Sierra Education Foundation, local Boy Scouts and West Slope high school ski and snowboard teams.
What is a Chautauqua?

Chautauqua was a very popular adult education movement in the United States during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Named after Chautauqua Lake where the first was held, Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s.
Former US President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."

Fireman and Police Detective wed in South Lake Tahoe on 9/11

First responders lost their lives as they rushed to the scene of the disaster to help the injured, marking the day as a day of remembrance for firefighters and police officers.
Two first responders chose 9/11 to be married in South Lake Tahoe in a ceremony that united a Suisun City Police Detective with a Pennisula Fireman.
New Zealand team wins 520 mile race through the Sierras

Eleven teams with four members each spent the past several days running, biking, orienteering, mountain climbing, kayaking over 520 miles of some of the world's most beautiful terrain.
Delays expected on Highway 89 during this weekend's Lake Tahoe Triathlon

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) said the highway will not close during events but CHP officers will be conducting traffic control at several locations along the courses, including several turnaround spots for the cyclists. Work on Caltrans’ construction projects in the area will be wrapped up by Friday at 10 a.m. and won’t resume until Sunday night.
