Strong warming trend coming to South Lake Tahoe/Reno/Carson Valley area

After a short cooling trend, look for that to reverse itself this week in South Lake Tahoe as a strong warming trend comes to the Sierra and Reno/Carson City area. Reno should see record breaking temperatures while the South Shore will see them above average.

Fireworks by Grucci producing "Lights on the Lake" Labor Day show

The company that was hired to produce South Lake Tahoe's world class pyrotechnic exhibition over the lake is a world-renowned company, Fireworks by Grucci.

They have designed and choreographed shows around the world including Dubai, Moscow, Boston Pops 4th of July, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, China, New York, Bahamas and Saudi Arabia. Now they can add Lake Tahoe to that extensive list that has been growing since the family owned company started in 1850 in New York.

Two forest thinning projects underway in South Lake Tahoe

Thinning of trees for fuels reduction and forest health is underway on approximately 50 acres of National Forest System lands adjacent to Gardner Street near Panther and Tata lanes in South Lake Tahoe, and on approximately 30 acres on the southwest end of the Spring Creek Tract off Highway 89.

Group looking for homeless "Warm Room" in South Lake Tahoe

For an estimated 20 days a year, homeless people would have access to a "warm room" where they can seek refuge when temperatures drop below freezing and conditions are deemed unsafe.

The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) asked the South Lake Tahoe City Council today for access to the recreation center between the hours of 8:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. on nights when there is a forecast of extreme temperatures. Wanting to keep the homeless population on the South Shore safe, TCH asked for permission to house approximately 20 men and women on a temporary basis.

Board of Supervisors spend day in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors spent the day in South Lake Tahoe, going on a tour hosted by Sue Novasel of District 5 which includes Meyers and the South Shore.

They were treated to a tour of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care's current home by co-founder Tom Milham. They saw the bear cubs, otter, fox, raccoons, owl, birds and duck currently calling the wildlife center home.

Before having lunch at Lakeview Commons that was prepared by the El Dorado County Jail culinary team, the tour went through some of the county buildings in the area including the library and El Dorado Center.

South Tahoe Public Utility District to install 72 new fire hydrants

Construction action on the corner of Black Bart Avenue and Pioneer Trail has had many people curious since this is normally a quiet spot, and has been since the post office left his location years ago.

South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) is having 72 new fire hydrants installed on the South Shore and their property at this corner is the staging area for the contractor on the project, White Rock Construction.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary adopts two entrances to Lake Tahoe

Volunteers from the South Shore community have stepped up to adopt, and maintain, the decorative gateways signs that welcome motorists to the Lake Tahoe basin.

The signs read, “Entering the Lake Tahoe Watershed – Help Protect It!” They are meant to remind the millions of people who visit Tahoe each year that they are entering a special place and share a duty to help protect its famously clear waters and unique environment.

July gaming figures released: South Shore "win" down 7%

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures for the month of July, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $23,313,076 which is 7.04% down from the same period in 2014.

When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the big winner was the Elko County with an income up 10.14% for the county, 14.81% for Wendover. The big loser, the Boulder Strip with their income of $60,630,987 down 11.06% when compared to 2014.

The state "win" figure was down .96% with income of $922,886,804.

The gaming win represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

El Dorado County Supervisors holding annual meeting at the lake

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will be holding their annual meeting in South Lake Tahoe on Monday, August 31. A full day is on the agenda, but very little will actually be in a meeting format.

At 9 a.m., Sue Novasel, the Supervisor from District 5, will give the Supervisors a tour of the new Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care at the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail. They then move to the El Dorado Center at 10 a.m. for a tour of county facilities followed by a 11 a.m. tour of the Library.

Land swap proposed between Forest Service and Conservancy

The United States Forest Service (USFS) and California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) will be trading 1,961 acres under a proposed land swap on the north, south and west shores of Lake Tahoe. Urban lots would go to CTC and the larger parcels would go to the USFS.

The agencies will hold two meetings where the public will have the opportunity to review the plan and offer feedback.

Smoke from western fires filling Lake Tahoe basin

Expect smoke to continue filling the Lake Tahoe basin on Saturday and, depending on the wind, into next week. Over the past few days, winds have pushed smoke from wildfires in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest into the Lake Tahoe Basin as well as nearby Truckee Meadows.

On Friday afternoon, air quality levels in Reno were in the range of "unhealthy for sensitive groups" to "unhealthy" but South Lake Tahoe fared much better with quality range in the "good" range. For the next six days, air is expected to stay in "moderate" range on the South Shore.

Mirabelle at Lake Tahoe holding grand reopening

The public is invited to the Grand Re-opening of Mirabelle at Lake Tahoe on Monday, August 24 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Ken Druley, the owner and chef the French restaurant on the south shore, will prepare samples of food from their menu as well as wine tasting.

Tahoe Chamber will officiate a ribbon cutting at 3:30 p.m.

Lake Tahoe Summit 2015

A shuttle and bike valet will be available for the large crowd expected to attend the 19th annual Lake Tahoe Summit on Monday, August 24 at the Round Hill Pines Beach Resort in Zephyr Cove.

This year, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-Nevada) is hosting the free event.

The theme of this year’s Lake Tahoe Summit is “Connecting Lake Tahoe’s Environment and Economy through Innovation and Transportation.” The keynote speaker is Chris Bently, Chief Executive Officer of Bently Enterprises.

Tahoe Transportation District appoints Russell Nygaard as Transportation Capital Program Manager

The Tahoe Transportation District recently appointed Russ Nygaard as transportation capital program manager to oversee the planning, design and execution of the agency's capital projects.

With 26 years engineering experience in transportation and bridge projects, Nygaard will perform project management duties and assist with funding procurement and budget maintenance while ensuring all federal requirements are met and executed on schedule.

Thrill seekers descend upon South Lake Tahoe for unique race

Thrill seekers, endurance athletes, and medical providers are gearing up for Primal Quest Lake Tahoe, a non-stop, unsupported race that attracts adventurers from Truckee to as far as New Zealand. The multi-sport expedition begins on the South Shore at Lake Tahoe August 19 or 20 and spans more than 450 miles of rugged terrain throughout the Sierra Nevada.

How the selling of LTCC bonds show what the nation thinks of Lake Tahoe

After the passing of the $55 million Lake Tahoe Community College General Bond, known as Measure F in November, the next step was to sell the bonds.

On August 6, 2015, $19 million of Series A bonds were sold at a much better rate than anyone expected. When the market opened at 7 a.m. PST, investors were ready to jump on these bonds and it only took two hours to sell them, and waiting in the wings were another $54.4 million in orders.

The biggest single investor was State Farm Insurance who bought about 25% of the bonds or, $4.7 million.

New Leadership Lake Tahoe class announced

After an extensive search and interview process, the participants for the next Leadership Lake Tahoe program have been announced. Leadership Lake Tahoe is a 10-month program that covers key aspects of the South Shore community so participants have a better understanding of their home and may further develop their leadership skills.

Rebirth and rebranding of Reno/Sparks will affect Lake Tahoe

Once considered rundown and dirty, Reno, as well as neighboring Sparks, is experiencing a staggering rebirth. Only eight percent of their economy now comes from the gaming and tourism industry, with the remainder coming from a boom of the relocation of manufacturing and distribution companies.

What is evident is that the Reno of today is not the Reno of 25 years ago. It isn't even the same Reno of four years ago.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary gives out community awards

Each year the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club holds their signature fundraiser, the St. Patrick's Day Celebration, and because of this they are able to give away tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, grants and gifts to members of the community.

On Friday, local non-profits were handed the fruits of the Rotarian's labor at their annual community donation day.

Torch Bruce Jenner carried through South Lake Tahoe sells for $24,000

The 1984 Summer Olympic Torch that Bruce Jenner carried through the South Shore has sold for just under $24,000 at auction.

The torch is the first major piece of Jenner memorabilia to go to auction since the winner of the 1976 Olympic Decathlon Gold Medal became Caitlyn Jenner. It had been estimated to bring $20,000 or more.

The seller was Bob Lorsch, a Los Angeles philanthropist and entrepreneur who orchestrated the Tahoe leg of the torch relay and secured Jenner's participation.

Design Workshop wins two Nevada awards

Design Workshop, the company behind several recent South Lake Tahoe projects, won two awards from the Washoe County Open Space and Regional Park Commission.

The company, who has an office on the South Shore, has completed projects in 30 countries over the last 45 years. They received the Elmer H. Anderson Parks Excellence Award for the work they have done to make the Ballardini Ranch Trailhead project a success. The project team also included Wood Rodgers, Spanish Springs Construction and Angie Persigehl.

Hard Rock water leak less than first reported

As reported on South Tahoe Now Friday, the Hard Rock Lake Tahoe shut down their pool due to a large leak which was releasing chlorinated water into the soil.

The initial leak had been discovered on Thursday, and the pool and pump were shut down until it could be determined where the problem was located.

South Shore casinos win big in June; End fiscal year ahead of 2014

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their figures today for the month of June, 2015 and they show Stateline casinos bringing in $17,613,209 for the month, which is 44% above the same period in 2014. This is the biggest increase in the state which saw a loss of 8.37%.

This reporting period wraps up the fiscal year. The South Shore is up $11,567,637, of 5.66%, over last year.

The biggest loss when compared to last year was the Las Vegas Strip which saw a 16.31% decrease with their take of $445,510,980.

Graffiti vandals tag signage on bike trail through Rabe Meadow

Vandals were busy this week in Rabe Meadow on the South Shore, defacing the new bike trail railings and signage throughout the historic meadow.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) are working on the case, saying they see this type of tagging every summer. Surveillance cameras have lead to the arrest of perpetrators on several other cases and they hope that leads will come in on this case as well.

19th Annual Lake Tahoe Summit

Water leak at Hard Rock Lake Tahoe shuts down swimming pool

The swimming pool at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe has been shut down due to a water leak.

During a routine inspection by the Douglas County Environmental Health Department on Thursday, it was discovered that there was a possible leak at the outdoor pool according to Ray Gentry, head of security at the South Shore casino. He said they didn't know the nature, or the source, so they notified The Nevada Department of Environmental Protection (NDEP) on Thursday afternoon.

TRPA approves Tahoe Valley Area Plan

The Governing Board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency today unanimously approved the Tahoe Valley Area Plan the City of South Lake Tahoe created to guide community revitalization and environmental restoration in a district centered around the “Y” intersection of Highways 89 and 50.

American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe until 2022

What the celebrities call the Super Bowl of Golf, the American Century Golf Championship has extended their contract in Lake Tahoe another seven years, until 2022.

The 2015 tournament was the 26th event to be held at Edgewood Tahoe and was the last year of the current contract.

David Foster chosen to create art sculpture for Champion's Plaza

In a quest to create a signature presence for Champion's Plaza, which is on the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50, the South Lake Tahoe City Council Tuesday awarded a local artist and LTCC professor with the task.

The plaza is meant to honor all athletes from the South Shore who represent the community on the international sports scene, such as the Olympics. It will contain Foster's creation as well as podiums with the lake as a backdrop, the perfect place for photo opportunities.

South Lake Tahoe now has Venetian gondola service in the Keys
