The South Lake Tahoe Endowment Cabinet awarded $50,000 to South Lake Tahoe area non-profits and schools during a recent reception at South Tahoe High School.

Wendy David, the Cabinet Chair, awarded the grants to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd.

Private donors fund the Foundation with money to be given back to the community in the form of grants.

Dr. Kindred Murillo, superintendent/president of the Lake Tahoe Community College District (LTCC), was selected by the Southwestern Community College District Board of Trustees as their finalist for school's new superintendent/president. The Trustees voted for Murillo at a special meeting Monday and they anticipate taking final action to appoint her and approve a contract at their December 14 meeting.

The House and Senate have agreed to include the bipartisan Lake Tahoe Restoration Act in the final bicameral Water Resources Development Act, titled the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act, Nevada Sen. Dean Heller announced Monday.

The news comes just hours after Vail Resorts and the many members of the public made pleas for this to happen.

Dr. Kindred Murillo, Superintendent/President of Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), is a finalist for the same position at Southwestern College (SWC) in Chula Vista.

Murillo and the two other finalists were in Southern California this week to meet with students, faculty and administrators at a public forum on Wednesday. On Monday, December 5, they will have a final interview before the college's governing board.

A charity with operations in South Lake Tahoe is the recipient of the national $50,000 Gatorade "For the Love of Sports" campaign. Besides Lake Tahoe, SOS Outreach serves youth in Colorado and Seattle.

"Thank you to the Tahoe community for the support during the For the Love of Sports Campaign to help us win the $50,000," said Theresa Papandrea, VP of Youth Programs for Lake Tahoe.

Papandrea said the SOS Outreach efforts will serve around 700 local youth and 5,000 nationally.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF.: Former City of South Lake Tahoe Councilmember Bill Crawford passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016 at the age of 82 after a brief illness. In honor of his service to the community, all City flags will be lowered to half-staff through Friday, December 2.

This is the fourth time I am able to say "Happy Thanksgiving" to the readers of South Tahoe Now. I took on this news endeavor in the summer of 2013 and have tried to create something that everyone can read and, hopefully, appreciate on a daily basis. Capturing the most attention these days is the traffic in our small communities from millions of people who drive up to enjoy our lake. And the transportation system is where TRPA is giving more focused attention to benefit Tahoe’s environment, economy, and quality of life.

Good news: Hunter, a recent Pet of the Week, has found his forever home!

There will be no Turkey Trot in South Lake Tahoe this year.

For over 30 years, runners both young and old have participated in the annual South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot. They tapped into their inner turkey, donned holiday costumes and ran a lap or two and aimed for a prize. The race was normally a 5k one for the adults, and fun runs for the younger set.

Lauren Thomaselli, the City's Recreation Superintendent, tried to find a partner for the 2016 event but was unsuccessful.

Roman Kreminski lives in South Lake Tahoe and, like many others, makes his living in building "Spec Homes," the process of building and selling homes for sale without any particular buyer in mind. It used to be a good business for Kreminski based on speculation of a strong real estate market and buyers waiting to invest in paradise.

He kept about five local families working full time to build the homes.

After Thursday's South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission meeting Kreminski said, "I'm done."

Barton Health grants were distributed to nine South Lake Tahoe organizations who address the most pressing health needs of the community: mental health, substance abuse and access to health care services.

During a recent luncheon, grants were handed out to Live Violence Free, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - El Dorado Chapter, SOS Outreach, South Tahoe Family Resource Center, Tahoe Art League, Tahoe Magic, Tahoe Turning Point, and Tahoe Youth & Family Services.

Legal action against the approved Martis Valley West project was taken in court Thursday as three groups, Sierra Watch, Mountain Area Preservation and the League to Save Lake Tahoe, joined forces to stop the controversial development proposal they feel threatens Lake Tahoe's clarity.

I just want to thank everyone who supported me and my campaign. I really feel that I made a decent showing, considering I was out-spent 33 to 1. I plan to stay involved in the community as I have always done. Who knows what will happen in 2 years. I’m already considering another city council run in 2018. I feel so lucky having been able to personally talk to about 2,500 voters, answer their questions, discuss their concerns and rejoice with them about living in the most beautiful place on earth.

My decision to run for the city council was based upon my belief that I have the skills, experience and desire to represent you effectively. If elected I look forward to listening to and working positively with fellow council members, agencies and citizens.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals today issued a ruling to uphold the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan created by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). After approval of the plan in December 2012, a lawsuit was filed by the Tahoe Area Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore to block implementation of the plan in February 2013.

The popular Lake Tahoe basin Christmas tree permits from the U.S Forest Service go on sale Monday, November 7 in South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe, then on November 9 in Incline Village.

Permits cost $10 each with a limit of two per family. They must be purchased in person, are not transferable and are sold on a first come, first serve basis. Even though the last day for tree permit sales is on December 23, they are normally sold out well before that date, sometimes as early as December 4.
