BMP workshops being held for Lake Tahoe area Realtors

In July of 2014, dozens of Lake Tahoe real estate professionals filled the TRPA board room when a proposal was discussed that would make BMPs mandatory at the Point of Sale for homes.

At that time, the room full of agents, brokers and mortgage companies, all voiced their opinion against the proposal.

Sierra-at-Tahoe latest resort to close due to drought

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to announce that it will suspend operations, beginning Monday, because of the lack of snow brought on by the ongoing drought in the west.

Soroptimist Writing Festival winners

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recently honored 12 South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) students for their winning Writing Festival essays. Each year the members of the club collaborate with the Language Arts teachers at STMS to provide an opportunity for students to express themselves.

Winning essays are selected from each grade level. First place and first place honors winners each won a $75 cash award, second place $50 and third place $25.

Soroptimists awards South Lake Tahoe women

An annual joint collaboration between the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Clubs recognizes women in the community with cash awards in three different categories. The award presentations are always in March, to align with the country’s Women’s History Month which highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.

Lake Tahoe snowmobilers face fines if they cause resource damage

A lack of the snow in the Sierra Nevada isn't just hurting water supplies, it's also hurting vegetation around popular snowmobiling routes.

This preventable problem is being seen around the lake where snowmobiles on too little snow creates ruts in the soil and crushes vegetation.

The U.S. Forest Service is asking snowmobilers to shift their activities to locations with adequate snow coverage, within permitted snowmobile areas. Snowmobile operators should avoid bare dirt and patchy snow and should not ride across streams or over small trees or brush.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra wants groups to apply for their grants

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) is pleased to announce their 2015 Grant Cycle. Soroptimist is a coined term meaning “Best for Women”.

The mission statement of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra is to “Strengthen and enhance the lives of women and youth in our community and the world”. With our established mission in mind, we focus on supporting programs at our local level based on the specific needs of our community. In addition, our club is mindful of the need to enhance the lives of women and youth throughout the world.

South Lake Tahoe students receive winter coats from local Kiwanis Clubs

Every year the three South Lake Kiwanis clubs get together for the Coats4kids program which ensures no elementary or middle school child goes through the winter without a coat to keep them warm.

Chaired by Gail Kolb and the Lake Tahoe Kiwanis Club, Coats4Kids is a joint project with Kiwanis of Tahoe Sierra, the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the Kiwanis Club of South Lake Tahoe Sunrisers.

Families in South Lake Tahoe receiving turkeys from Food Bank

The EL Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Friday to give away turkeys to families selected by local agencies.

In partnership with Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Rotarians, SLT Fire Department, Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Club and the SLT Police Department, the Food Bank will give away 150 turkeys.

Families were signed up to receive the turkeys by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth and the Family Resource Center of South Lake Tahoe. They will get the gift on Friday, November 21 at the American Legion.

Soroptimists honor local women serving in the military

"We made sacrifices to keep the fight outside of our homes." An emotional Sheryll Valencia spoke of why she joined the Army in 2004 and made three deployments to Iraq and now works for David & Johnson, Ltd in South Lake Tahoe. "It's important to always remember the ones who sacrificed their lives," Sheryll told the women gathered for Thursday's Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra meeting.

Bringing Art To Schools in South Lake Tahoe

In keeping with its mission to bring more arts to more people, El Dorado Arts Council is thrilled to announce its new partnership with BATS, Bringing Art to Schools, an art appreciation and art history program for South Lake Tahoe students in kindergarten through fifth grade. BATS students both learn about classic works of art—their meanings, styles, and the movements that informed them—and create their own art based upon a selected theme.

Soroptimists awarding deserving young women in South Lake Tahoe

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are accepting applications for the VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD.

Each year the two local Soroptimist clubs honor young women in our community ages 14-17 who are engaged in volunteer deeds such as fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; or working to end discrimination or poverty.

Each recipient will receive $100.

South Lake Tahoe Soroptimists looking for "Live Your Dream Award" applicants

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra and Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe are once again collaborating to honor two women in our community with the LIVE YOUR DREAM award. Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and are attending an undergraduate degree program or a vocational skills training program.

Fun, wine and art part of Soroptimist fundraising event

Twenty members and friends of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recently enjoyed an evening of artistic creativity, wine, and fundraising at the Lake Tahoe Paint and Sip Studio located at 900 Ski Run Boulevard. Each month owners Jill and Frank Slipher provide a unique fundraising experience for a different non-profit to host a "FUNdraising" evening. They donate half of the $40/person fee back to the designated non-profit!

BIG Day at the Kids' Fishing Derby at Lake Baron

"Big" describes the fish caught by the winners of the 13th Annual South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge Kids' Fishing Derby last Sunday at Tahoe Paradise Park's Lake Baron. Records were broken, including biggest fish and number of trophy fish caught. The mark was set early, as Casey Holder landed a 4 lb 9 oz trout in the opening minutes of the Derby. At least 50 trout weighing in at over 2 pounds were pulled in by the participating children, many weighing over 3 pounds! It didn't take long for Chance Rice to bring in the day's ultimate winner, a 4 lb 10 oz beauty!

Local students benefit from Soroptimist's Backpack Attack

Some South Lake Tahoe students in grades K-12 will be going to school on Monday with a backpack full of supplies filled up and donated by Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra.

Every year the group launches "Backpack Attack" to ensure students in need will have a new backpack and school supplies. JANSPORT donated 50 backpacks this year, and club members donated the items to go inside.

The backpacks are going to the families of clients at Live Violence Free.

On Friday, May 30th Live Violence Free in collaboration with South Tahoe Middle School and Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra held the annual Girls Empowerment Retreat for 33 middle school girls, grades 6-8.

South Lake Tahoe Voted Best Ski Destination

South Lake Tahoe was voted the Best Ski Destination in a highly contested USA Today reader ski poll conducted over the past four weeks.

Citing the beautiful views and fantastic skiing, voters were able to choose their favorite ski destination daily. Sun Valley, Idaho came in second with North Lake Tahoe in third, which shows everyone how popular Lake Tahoe skiing is as a whole.

284 South Lake Tahoe Students Earn Free Ski Passes to Sierra At Tahoe!

Sierra At Tahoe has once again issued free ski passes to students of Lake Tahoe Unified School District that earned straight A's (or a 4.0 GPA)for 2 consecutive trimesters.

During the 201213 school year 284 students qualified to earn the pass.

Letters are going out to students this week with instructions on how to pick up their free ski pass.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center opens cancer treatment center in South Lake Tahoe

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center opened a new cancer treatment center at 1154 Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe July 1, 2013.

Sierra Nevada Cancer Center is a state-of-the-art oncology and hematology facility now offering treatment in five locations including Carson City, Fallon, Gardnerville and Sparks. The South Lake Tahoe facility will expand the reach of Sierra Nevada Cancer Center making cancer treatment more convenient and closer to home for those living at the Lake.

Several inches of snow possible for Lake Tahoe, Sierra with storm system arriving Tuesday

A weak weather system will move into the Sierra beginning Sunday with a wetter system expected to bring some much-needed snow accumulation for the Lake Tahoe region from Tuesday through Thursday, the National Weather Service reports.

For the remainder of the weekend, expect rain and high elevation snow across the Sierra and Western Nevada, with snow accumulations up to a few inches possible for the higher terrain above Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe, Sierra brace for winter storms to arrive as Christmas travel period begins

A series of strong winter storms will arrive in three waves and when it is over, anywhere from 2 to 5 feet of snow will have dropped above Lake Tahoe, at ski resorts, on highways and throughout much of the Sierra in time for Christmas.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service is in effect through Monday morning for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra as a strong series of systems moves into the region.

Periods of light to moderate snow will begin Friday and intensive early Saturday morning with moderate to heavy snow Saturday through Sunday night.

Lake Tahoe Sierra Century Ride: Iconic fall favorite bike event celebrates 10th year

The Lake Tahoe Sierra Century Ride 2012 is slated for Saturday, September 22, offering incredible scenery and excellent exercise, all benefiting a great cause. Riders can choose a 100-mile, 60-mile or 30-mile route and enjoy breathtaking vistas and the crisp mountain air of autumn in the Sierra.

All of the routes start and finish in The Village at Squaw Valley, and all benefit the music students at North Tahoe Middle and High schools. While the event's moniker includes the word ‘century,' the 100-miler is just one of three rides offered in this annual Tahoe event.

Livestrong, American Century give $100,000 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

The holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”
