Whittell High football team celebrates Homecoming with win, record now 9-0
Submitted by paula on Fri, 10/24/2014 - 12:06amThe Whittell Warriors celebrated Homecoming Thursday night with a win over Excel Christian our of Sparks, NV. Their record is now 9-0. The score isn't in yet and will be posted as soon as received.
Next game for the undefeated team from the South Shore October 30 against Virginia City. The home game will start at 7 p.m.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/19/2014 - 10:57amThe Whittell Warriors Varsity football team improved their record to 8-0 after a double overtime win over Mineral County on Friday night. The Warriors fell behind in the first quarter 22-8 and went into the locker room at half time trailing 44-22. At the end of regulation play the score was tied at 44 after Whittell came back with two touchdown passes by Colin Buchholtz late in the game. Max Primo's 6 yard rushing TD in overtime was followed by a pass by Buccholtz to Armando Rodgriquez for a touchdown put Whittell on the win column with a final score of 56-50.
South Tahoe High football team gets first win during homecoming celebrations
Submitted by paula on Sun, 10/12/2014 - 10:19amA pep rally and a parade through South Lake Tahoe started off the South Tahoe High homecoming festivities on Friday afternoon which culminated in a convincing win on the gridiron for the varsity Viking football team.
Looking for their first win during the 2014 football season, South Tahoe took their 0-6 record to the field against the team from Dayton. They scored 28 unanswered points after Dayton started off the game with a safety.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/28/2014 - 9:13pmAre you ready for some football? Friday Night Lights are underway once again as the South Tahoe High Vikings take on the El Dorado Cougars on August 29. The JV game starts at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity starts at 7 p.m.
Viking Coach Kevin Hennessee has five seniors on his team, 24 juniors and two sophomores.
Both the Boy's and Girl's Cross County teams head to Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks for their meets.
On Saturday, the South Tahoe Girls Soccer teams take to the field. The Vikings host Montgomery in an 11 a.m. JV game and 1 p.m. Varsity match up.
2014 Gene Upshaw Scholarship awarded to Whittell High student Melissa Petty
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/28/2014 - 6:27pmGeorge Whittell High School student Melissa Petty of Stateline, NV. was announced as the recipient for the sixth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship. Petty’s essay about her hard work in the classroom, her sports, her faith and goodwill helped secure the scholarship valued at $5,000. Petty plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno and pursue a bachelor’s degree in science.
Tahoe Douglas Rotary awards nearly $10,000 in scholarships
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/13/2014 - 5:51pmThe Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club awarded nearly $10,000 in vocational and educational scholarships to local high school students this year. The ten winners attend either Whittell High School or South Tahoe High.
Whittell students who won the financial awards this year were Elizabeth Anderson, Tori Jimenez, Spencer Buchholz, Serena Libert, Kendal Ferris and Danica Bunnett for academics and Mark Waite and Margaret Ellis for vocational.
Three South Tahoe High students were awarded vocational scholarships this year: Gabriella Torres, Rebecca Wesson and Brandon Singleton.

Whittell High School Parents Upset With Planned Cuts
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/19/2014 - 11:28pmComing on the heels of the announcement by U.S. News & World Report that their school was nationally ranked and placed as the 2nd best high school in Nevada, planned cuts at Whittell High School were unveiled at the May 9th Douglas County School Board Meeting.
Several concerned parents attended the last meeting and many more are planning on making the drive to Minden for this week's meeting. The parents have taken their mission to social media with starting the Facebook page: Concerned citizens and parents for Whittell High School.

South Lake Tahoe Sisters Named to Junior World Ski Championships Team
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/19/2014 - 4:25pmLocal girls, Michael and Whitney Gardner, have been named to the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships team.
They will join 20 other Americans competing in Valmalenco, Italy starting on March 30.
Both girls have attended Whittell High School, Michael is currently a student and Whitney is a graduate. They ski for the Heavenly Valley Ski and Snowboard Foundation.

Whittell High School's Boys Basketball Team Wins Nevada State Title
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/01/2014 - 11:34pmThe boys basketball team from Whittell High School claimed the Division IV Nevada State Title on Saturday night by beating Virginia City by a score of 53-48.
The Warriors beat Spring Mountain on Friday in a close game by the score of 53-50, getting them into the final round for their 4th game of the year against Virginia City.
KNBB televised the game live from the University of Nevada.

The South Tahoe Girls took first overall.
Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High took 1st in all three races, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Duals. Whittell's Michael Gardner placed 2nd in Duals, 6th in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom while teammate Madison Idso placed 2nd in Giant Slalom, 8th in Slalom,

Ty Sprock of South Lake Tahoe to Compete in Junior World Ski Championships

The Warriors won their last 11 games, bringing their league record to 13-1 and the overall record to 21-3.

South Tahoe High Skiers Take First at High School Ski Races at Heavenly Valley
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/11/2014 - 11:37pmSkiers from Whittell, South Tahoe, North Tahoe, Incline, Truckee, Carson and Douglas High Schools met on the slopes at Heavenly Valley on Tuesday for the High School Slalom Races.
South Tahoe High's Connor McKeen came in 1st in the boys' races with a total combined time of 1:01.79. Grant Dunkelman of Douglas came in 2nd at 1:02.98 followed by Harrison Goss of North Tahoe 1:03.55.
Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High came in 1st in the girls' races with a time of 1:02.96, followed by Cheyenne Brown of Truckee with a time of 1:04.86 and Laurel Taylor of Incline at 1:07.66.

We have had much excitement since August 19th with our first and hopefully, annual Round Hill Pines Beach Bash which was held on September 8th. Festivities included hot dogs and hamburgers, a raffle, and a silent auction. Families were able to get acquainted and re-acquainted and the kids were still enjoying the long summer sun. Thanks to our awesome Parent-Teacher Club, we are well on our way to funding many academic opportunities for enrichment and intervention as well as materials and resources for our teachers.
Sugar Pine Foundation Has Busy Planting Season Ahead

The group has several opportunities this fall to help save the trees by planting seedling in areas around the lake. 850 seedlings have already been planted this fall and more will be planted at the following events:

Tahoe Douglas Fire District uses insurance bonus money to reward local nonprofits

The money directed to the nonprofit groups comes from the fire district's health insurance plan operated through consultant LBG Advisors.
