Blizzard Warning now in effect as Atmospheric River brings feet of snow to the Sierra
Submitted by paula on Tue, 01/26/2021 - 9:53amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The warnings have been coming for over a week, and now the day weather experts have been warning us about is here. For snow that has been measured in inches so far this winter, a big change hits Lake Tahoe and the Sierra starting Tuesday night when it will be measured in feet.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has now upgraded the storm warnings to blizzard level.

Ten inches of new snow fell overnight at Homewood Mountain Resort’s summit on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, and two inches at the base (lake level). With a winter storm warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight, the National Weather Service forecast is calling for another 4-8” of snow throughout the day today, and 1-3” tonight.

At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.

Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Chilly and unsettled weather is expected to persist into the first half of next week with a stormer weather pattern possibly continuing through the end of March according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/13/2020 - 2:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the storm this weekend to a Winter Storm Warning with an increase in their previous forecast for snow accumulations and added winds. It begins Friday at 11:00 p.m. and goes until Monday at 11:00 a.m.
They are calling for heavy snow with total accumulations of 1-2 feet under 7,000 feet and 2-4 feet above. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph with ridge winds gusting to 100 mph in the Greater Lake Tahoe area.
The winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow.

This storm will bring heavy mountain snow, strong gusty winds, and plenty of travel headaches. Once through Thursday, expect less active weather over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with the possibility of more storms next week.

The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Sierra from Yuba Pass to Ebbetts Pass from Sunday morning until Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.
The latest storm system is still over the Sierra with more on the way. With high of 38 and low of 33, expect rain to continue in South Lake Tahoe.

Big rigs not allowed on I80 or US50; Chain controls in place over Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/30/2019 - 8:18pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavy traffic over Donner Summit on I-80, an incoming snowstorm and slick conditions have led Caltrans officials to not allow any commercial tractor-semitrailer combinations on the highway from Applegate to the state line. They estimate this will be the case until Monday morning.
Many of those big rigs were coming over US-50 and Echo Summit, but no longer. The commercial semis 65-feet and longer are no longer allowed over the summit. It is unknown at this time when they will be allowed.
Beautiful Thanksgiving day around Lake Tahoe, more snow expected
Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/28/2019 - 11:25amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chain controls over many mountain roads are being lifted this morning as the beautiful blue skies Lake Tahoe is famous for are appearing from behind the clouds.
As of 11:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Caltrans has removed chain controls from US50 at Echo Summit but there is a small pocket from Fresh Pond to Sly Park that requires them at this time.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe from Saturday at 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Heavy snow with significant travel delays possible Saturday afternoon through early Monday morning.

Localized totals near 3 feet are possible over the multi-day period along the Sierra Crest. Winds will be gusting as high as 60 mph.
The worst conditions will be late Tuesday through midday Wednesday.

After a day that saw mostly rain at lake level, the National Weather Service updated the warning, extending the length of the warning that originally issued and lowering snow levels through the three-day period.

Lake Tahoe seeing rain, snow and wind; Winter Storm Warning in place
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/13/2019 - 7:38amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A powerful “atmospheric river” storm is starting to make its presence known with heavy rain, high winds and snow throughout much of California and into the Sierra.
Initial forecasts had just rain at lake level Wednesday, but it is snowing as of 8:30 a.m.
Wednesday and Thursday: Heavy high elevation snow and damaging winds are expected. Rainfall amounts are expected to be between one and two inches in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday. Expect chain controls on mountain passes. Winter Storm Warning in place until 10:00 p.m. Thursday.
Roads a mess through the Sierra tonight, I80 closed

As of 7:20 p.m. I80 remains closed from the CA/NV state line and Applegate. US 50 over Echo Summit was closed at 7:00 p.m. for avalanche control and SR 88 is closed from Peddler Vista to Red Lake Creek/the Carson Pass. SR 267 at Northstar is closed as is the Mt. Rose Highway, SR 431.
SR 89 around Emerald Bay has not opened since the storms last week and remains closed.
On the roads that are open, vehicles stuck in snow and accidents have been reported.
Weekend travel around Lake Tahoe to be impacted by two storms

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Lake Tahoe from 4:00 p.m. Friday to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. Heavy snow is expected. Total lake level snow accumulations of 17 to 29 inches with the highest totals west of Highway 89, except 2 to 4 feet above 7000 feet expected. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph with ridge winds gusting as high as 95 mph.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/31/2019 - 10:04pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for Lake Tahoe, one that starts on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. and lasts until Monday night at 10:00 p.m. as two major storms take aim for Lake Tahoe.
The incoming storms have prompted travel officials to warn travelers to get to Lake Tahoe by 4:00 p.m. Friday night and to stay off mountain roads from then until early Monday morning.
The warnings are calling for heavy snow at lake level anywhere from 19" to 33" and up to five feet of snow above 7000 feet over the four-day period.

Storm leaves behind challenging road conditions and cold temps

Road controls remain up this morning, no matter where you are in the Reno/Tahoe area. The storm hit the Reno-Sparks, Carson City and Carson Valley areas much more than expected Tuesday night, prompting school delays and roads remain challenging there today. A Winter Storm Warning remains in place until 10:00 a.m.

Chance of snow for much of week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

The Winter Storm Warning expires on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
Tonight through Monday, cold and dry conditions settle over the region with highs remaining well below average. Overnight lows will be quite chilly, especially in areas that have a few inches of snow on the ground along with clear skies.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/29/2018 - 6:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Winter weather has arrived in Lake Tahoe! The second of three storm fronts is finishing up Thursday night with the storm warning expiring at 4:00 a.m. Friday. But Mother Nature isn't done yet.
Another Winter Storm Warning goes up for the Lake Tahoe Basin at 1:00 p.m. Friday and will be in effect until 3:00 p.m. Saturday. A break in the weather precipitation will occur Friday morning which will make this the best window of opportunity to travel in the Sierra.

Stronger storm forecast to hit Lake Tahoe Wednesday night
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/28/2018 - 11:39amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm warning is in effect starting at 10:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28 and lasting until 4:00 a.m. Friday, Nov.30. Heavy snow is expected, prompting officials to upgrade the storm from a "watch" to a "warning."
Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches below 7000 feet are expected with 3-6 inches at lake level and 1-3 feet above 7000 feet with higher amounts along the Sierra crest according to the National Weather Service. It will be windy as well with gusts as high as 60 mph over higher terrain.

Avalanche Watch - The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a backcountry avalanche watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 7:00 a.m. Friday between Yuba Pass at the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south.
Winter Storm Watch in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday-Wednesday

There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/03/2018 - 8:24amThe trip to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 Friday was not a pleasant experience for most drivers. Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.
Weather and road condition report for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 03/01/2018 - 8:39am4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Interstate 80 has reopened at this time, but tractor-semitrailer combinations are not allowed due to traction concerns. SR88 is closed at the Carson Spur with no time estimated of reopening.Hwy 50 over Echo Summit is reopened after a collision was cleared. Most roads in the Sierra are requiring chains or 4WD with snow tires.
Winter weather advisory remains in place overnight in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/25/2018 - 5:11pmA storm that dropped over a foot of snow at higher elevations around Lake Tahoe is hanging around Thursday evening.
Chain controls are in place on roads in the Sierra including Highway 50, I-80, State Route 88 and 89, Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit. On Hwy 50 they start as low as Kyburz, Dew Drop on SR-88 and Baxter on I-80 as of 5:10 p.m.
The winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 a.m. Friday morning. A few more inches of snow is forecast for lake level.
Drier conditions with mild temperatures will return for the weekend and early next week
Chain controls finally going up around the Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/18/2018 - 10:52pmIt's been awhile, but its time to get the chains ready if you're without 4WD and snow tires! A long awaited storm is making its way into the Lake Tahoe basin. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for Lake Tahoe until 4:00 p.m. Friday.
I-80 over Donner Pass has had chain controls go up at about 7:00 p.m. but Highway 50 over Echo Summit just saw chain controls go up at 10:15 p.m.
