19 Nabbed in Phony Contractor Sting in South Lake Tahoe

A simultaneous sting operation between the California State License Board and the Nevada Contractors License Board snared 11 people on the California side of South Lake Tahoe and 8 on the Nevada side on Wednesday.

Named the "Border Blitz," the sting was conducted at a SLT single family home near the Hwy 89 and Hwy 50 intersection (the "Y")and at a condominium in Stateline, NV. Investigators from the CSLB and NCLB posed as homeowners seeking bids for various projects that included exterior painting, deck work, landscaping, and other tasks requiring general "B" contractor skills.

South Lake Tahoe Winter Olympians' Welcome Home Parade Saturday

The Welcome Home celebration for the South Lake Tahoe Olympians will be held on Saturday, March 15. A procession will leave South Tahoe High at 1 p.m. and proceed to the Y, down Highway 50, through Meyers and to Sierra at Tahoe.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Asks: What Do You Want to See at the Y?

Several South Lake Tahoe residents showed up at the presentation of the Tahoe Area Plan at the airport on Thursday. Most agreed that the area known as the "Y" needs to be changed with an area plan, but which direction to a take to a final plan is where people differ.

The evening consisted of a presentation by John Hitchcock, who is on loan to the city from the TRPA for this project as Planning Project Manager. After he spoke the group broke out into three breakout sessions, each focuses on one of three choices presented as the future concept for "Y" area.

City Seeks Community Input on Tahoe Valley Area Plan

A public workshop on the vision for the South "Y" area will be held on Thursday, February 27 in the South Lake Tahoe City Council chambers at 6 p.m.

Future planning and land use guidance for what is known as the Tahoe Valley Area Plan will be discussed as the City's project leaders seek input from the community as to what the area should be.

The Tahoe Valley Plan reflects the City’s effort to rekindle the economic vitality and spirit of the Tahoe Valley Community and to enhance the area's unique characteristics.

South Lake Tahoe Teen Victim of Hit & Run in Stable Condition

A 15 year old South Lake Tahoe teen is in stable condition today after being struck by a car, dragged through an intersection, and left in a snow bank at the corner of Washington and Third Streets on Monday evening. The suspect, a male driver, left the scene in a white or off white subaru.

His mother, Aisha Sequoiyah, spoke to SouthTahoeNow.com today from Renown Medical Center in Reno. She said her son Abiyah is doing okay and is undergoing cognitive tests today to determine that there is no brain damage. She hopes he will be released later today.

South Lake Tahoe Residents Have Many Upcoming Opportunities to be Involved in the Future of the City

The City of South Lake Tahoe is encouraging residents to be informed and engaged in the community and is offering several opportunities in the coming weeks to do just that.

"In an engaged community, every person has the information, the opportunities and the support needed to take action and lead change throughout their lives," according to the Knight Foundation. "When people become involved, and exercise their full democratic rights, they make their lives and those of others better."

Plastic Bag Ban Goes Into Effect In South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday

A ban on single use plastic bags goes into effect in the city limits of South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Local grocery stores have been preparing for the new ordinance which was voted on by the City Council on October 15, 2013.

City of South Lake Tahoe Giving Away Lead Safe Tahoe Shopping Bags

The single use plastic bag ban goes into effect on January 15 in South Lake Tahoe. In order to help people with the transition, the city's Lead Safe Tahoe team is giving away free reusable shopping bags on the following dates:

January 13 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. @ Raley's at 4000 Lake Tahoe Blvd. (near Stateline)

Free Bus Rides in South Lake Tahoe Until January 5

Passengers will be riding Blue GO buses along Highway 50 for free through January 5. Routes 50 and 53 run from the "Y" to the Kahle Community Center from 5 am to 11 pm.

Tahoe Transportation District is offering the free rides to keep cars off the road during the higher traffic holiday season and to show riders how they can help the South Lake Tahoe air quality and to see how convenient, comfortable and affordable the bus system is.

Holiday Activities in South Lake Tahoe This Weekend

Freshly fallen snow will add to the holiday ambiance of events in South Lake Tahoe this weekend!

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites everyone to their annual Holiday in History Open House on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8. On Saturday from 11 to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, visitors can tour the 1930s log cabin, view a Victorian holiday scene, enjoy free cider and cookies and children can even call the North Pole from a special antique phone! The event is free.

Dubbed the "All Star Panel," a group of long time local residents shared stories of a South Lake Tahoe most of us never experienced. The seven panelists have lived in Lake Tahoe a combined 600 plus years and shared some great stories with the overflowing crowd at Camp Richardson Lodge on Tuesday evening. In fact, the number of long time locals in the audience was very evident since their combined years of living in Lake Tahoe was over 1880!

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

A beautiful day to be out and about in South Lake Tahoe! We stopped by Meeks to check out their Kids Day and found our friends from Kiwanis with their free Kids ID booth, Jen from KTHO broadcasting live and Ethan and Eli Cox enjoying the crafts while dad James was grabbing their hot dogs.

We also stopped by the newly remodeled Starbucks at the Y and checked out the beautiful new place. So much more space now! Same friendly crew ready to serve.

Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

We found lots of things to enjoy while out and about in South Lake Tahoe today!

The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.

Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Holding a Job Fair

Job seekers are invited to have an experience of a lifetime this winter in Lake Tahoe as Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort hire a combined total of 2,300 seasonal employees for the 2013-2014 winter season. Heavenly will hire 800 seasonal employees. Northstar will hire 1,100, and Kirkwood will hire 400. Three job fairs are scheduled throughout October, giving candidates an opportunity to meet with managers and find the best-suited jobs.

Oktoberfest is Alive and Well in South Lake Tahoe

Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson is living up to expectations with their food, drink, crafts, games and kid's activities. If the cars parked along Highway 89 is any indication there were several hundred people, if not into the thousands, enjoying the festivities.

The annual event runs until Sunday at 5 pm so there is still time to make it out. The Trolley will be running from the Y and dropping off passengers right in front of Camp Richardson. Biking and walking are also very viable options if one prefers not to drive.

$43.1 Million Highway Project Officially Dedicated

"Look at Lake Tahoe as the picture and Highway 50 as the frame" were the words of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis as he spoke at the Trout Creek Bridge to Ski Run Boulevard Project Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Friday.

The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to host the 24th Annual Lake in the Sky Air Show at Lake Tahoe Airport in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, California on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 8:00 am -3:30 pm.

The Lake in the Sky Air Show has been described as “the best in the west” by one of the Navy’s participants.

Big 5 Sporting Goods celebrated its Grand Opening ceremony for its new South Lake Tahoe location Thursday.

“The Grand Opening of Big 5 is a great addition to the retailers at the Y and we are thrilled to have them in our community. This adds to the larger retailers coming to our community and we hope to attract more small and mid-size retailers to the area” said City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis.

Big 5 lease may save Y Factory Stores

With the Factory Stores at the Y signing a multi-year lease agreement with Big 5 Sporting Goods, the South Lake Tahoe center may be able to find solid financial ground. “I’m still in negotiations with the bank and trying to get a loan modification. Certainly the Big 5 lease helps me. But nothing has been settled yet,” Shannon Casteel told Lake Tahoe News.

South Lake Tahoe Awarded $475,000 for Bike Paths

The City of South Lake Tahoe has been awarded $475,452 in grant funding from Caltrans through the Bicycle Transportation Account (BTA) among 111 applicants. This grant was written by the City’s grants coordinator, Lori Marino.

The city has identified through annual inspection, several Class 1 bike paths that have exceeded usable life span and are in desperate need of complete reconstruction. The pathways identified, provide key connectivity to various neighborhoods and business districts within the city limits.

Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

As I noted earlier this year, one of California’s two Free Fishing Days will be on Sept. 8. The other Free Fishing Day was way back on July 7. You can fish, all day, without a fishing license on Saturday.
You will be able to fish wherever you like in California, without the need for a fishing license.
