California Fire Foundation supports South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Fire Foundation and Sysco joined forces to help communities impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, and South Lake Tahoe was recently a beneficiary.

The two groups gifted over $5,000 in relief efforts to the South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center for food for the families they serve.

This non-profit organization provides basic needs services, educational opportunities, family advocacy and bilingual counseling for children and adults in the South Lake Tahoe region.

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe offering increased support to South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In response to the COVID-19 pandemic the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has been providing increased support to the South Lake Tahoe community, distributing hundreds of pounds of cat and dog food along with numerous other services.

The food distribution from when HSTT shut down to the public due to COVID are as follows:

Dry dog food: 1719 lbs total ~ 171 lbs a week
Dry cat food: 178 lbs total ~ 18 lbs a week
Canned dog food: 636 cans ~ 64 cans a week
Canned cat food: 467 cans ~ 47 cans a week
Cat litter: 130 lbs total ~ 13 lbs a week

South Lake Tahoe Library presents The Fratello Marionettes on Facebook Live

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Library is continuing their summer events even though they cannot present them in person. On Friday, July 17 at 2:00 p.m., join he Fratello Marionettes on the library's Facebook page to see the performance of the classic fairy tale, The Frog Prince.

Outdoor performances have always been part of the Summer Reading Challenge but due to current circumstances, all performances have been moved online.

South Tahoe High School grad Tyler Pevenage awarded firefighter's scholarship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tyler Pevenage, a recent graduate of South Tahoe High School, was awarded the “Michael Hoffman Memorial Scholarship” in the amount of $1,000.

This award is sponsored by the California State Firefighters’ Association Northern Division and open to family members of firefighters.

Tyler’s outstanding academic achievement, involvement in high school sports, leadership, and volunteer work in the community earned her this scholarship that is renewable yearly up to $4,000.

Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe a winner at Korbel's Closest to the Pin Contest

LTCC Foundation's rundraiser Taste of Gold goes virtual

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19 in our community, the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation is hosting its annual Taste of Gold fundraiser as a virtual event this year through July 18. Funds raised from this event support the Lake Tahoe College Promise program that provides up to three years of tuition-free college for eligible students of all ages, a free textbook lending library, and the Lake Tahoe Community College Food Pantry, which provides crucial nutrition and personal hygiene products to LTCC’s neediest students.

Local teen facing brain surgery, fundraiser established

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Maddy Moody, a former South Lake Tahoe student and current Douglas High sophomore, will be at the UC San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital at the end of the month for brain surgery.

Fundraiser underway to repair South Lake Tahoe dog's broken femur

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A local man has started a Go Fund Me page to raise funds to fix his dog Titan's broken femur.

Just over a week ago Titan, an 11-month-old puppy, was chasing a chipmunk and went over a cliff trying to catch it. In the fall he broke his femur.

Demetrius Prunty, the dog daddy, lost his job due to COVID-19 closures and hasn't been able to get the dog's leg repaired. The $2,500 fundraising request is to pay for Titan's doctor bills.

Prunty, who has lived in South Lake Tahoe for four years, adopted Titan after his birth in August 2019.

Workout With Law Enforcement Day for Douglas County Special Olympics

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) hosted a “Workout with Law Enforcement” day at Lampe Park in Gardnerville for Special Olympics Athletes, an event that concluded the ‘DCSO Special Olympics Fitness Challenge’.

Members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office worked-out alongside the athletes, cheering each other on, just as they do at the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run event.

Kudos: Dental Assisting program thanks South Lake Tahoe area dentists

Our local dental offices are SUPER HEROS! When COVID-19 shut the world down, it shut our dental offices for about 2.5 months. When they could reopen, they were faced new required PPEs and a shortage trying to get what was needed to reopen. Then there was me, asking them to take my dental assisting students for an externship which requires a minimum of 50 hours spent in the office. Lake Tahoe Community College provided each student with the required PPEs, so it would be less of a hardship for the dental offices to take them.

Bread & Broth 4 Kids starts free summer food program for South Lake Tahoe youth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the fourth consecutive summer, the St. Theresa Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will provide weekly food bags for South Lake Tahoe youth every Wednesday until school resumes in August.

Since local schools closed in March due to the coronavirus, Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) has provided weekly food bags to students at bus stops and schools in coordination with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as they distributed daily meals. Some weeks the BB4K bags went to over 410 children.

Every donation has gone directly back into the South Lake Tahoe community to support those needing help with basics: shelter, food and utilities.

South Lake Tahoe businesses awarded over $65,000 in COVID-19 grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eighty-seven small businesses have taken advantage of a special fund created to help them through COVID-19 related challenges.

The City of South Lake Tahoe put $50,000 into the fund and that was combined with other donations managed by the El Dorado Community Foundation. Other partners include the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, and many generous local donors.

Businesses in South Lake Tahoe were awarded $65,579.22.

Barton Foundation to give away $100,000 in local grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Barton Foundation began accepting applications on June 15 from local nonprofit organizations for this year’s $100,000 Community Health Grant program. GoFundMe account created to help owner keep radio stations KRLT-FM and KOWL-AM

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are two locally owned and operated radio stations, KRLT FM and KOWL AM, that have served the Lake Tahoe area for 60 years (AM was first, then FM came 40 years ago).

General Manager and Owner Steve Harness took out a note with investors to buy the station from Cherry Creek Radio five years ago. On June 30, 2020, a $100,000 balloon payment on that note is due. While the stations' monthly overhead has stayed the same during the pandemic, their revenue has dropped by roughly 80 percent.

Combat Hero Bike Build to honor South Lake Tahoe veteran

Richard "Jay" Thoma of South Lake Tahoe will be presented a custom bike in Carson City on Saturday as part of the Combat Hero Bike Build giveaway.

Thoma, who has lived on the South Shore since 1989, lost his leg in an accident on an aircraft carrier in the Philippines in 1973 at the age of 18. Since then he has been walking with a prosthetic leg but never gave up the love of riding motorcycles.

Carson Valley Days festival canceled but parade is still happening Saturday

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The 110th annual Carson Valley Days Festival has been canceled but the parade is still happening on Saturday, June 13 starting at 9:00 a.m. Due to health concerns with COVID-19, the popular carnival and all other events were canceled but the Douglas County Commissioners granted approval for the annual parade.

On Thursday afternoon about 4:30 p.m. a fire crew from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded to a brush fire at the Christian Science Church near Smart & Final. The crew managed to contain and extinguish the blaze and the church building sustained only minimal damage.

A shopping cart was found near what appeared to be the fire origin and contained what appeared to be personal property. The exact cause of the blaze is unknown but illegal campers have been a continuing problem in that area.

96th birthday celebration for WWII tail gunner in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In September, Danny Francisco was able to fly in a a B-17, 75 years after his last flight, and now today, June 5, the community can honor and celebrate him on this 96th birthday.

Everyone is invited to "attend" his party by driving by with a cheer, a wave, an American flag, or any other birthday greeting. He will be at 2216 Dunlap Street in South Lake Tahoe from 3:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the public can join in a drive-by celebration of this WWII vet. The home is located a block from South Tahoe refuse.

100 Miles for Tahoe Virtual Challenge - Run, walk, bike during the month of June

The Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club (TMMRC) is inviting the public to lace up your shoes and run/walk/hike during the month of June for the 100 Miles for Tahoe Virtual Challenge, a fundraiser benefiting the Tahoe Rim Trail Association.

Each year, TMMRC contributes part of the proceeds from races like Escape from Prison Hill to the TRTA, but these race, like so many others, are canceled for the time being. Still, running isn't canceled, and neither is the need for stewardship and maintenance of the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Black Lives Matter Candlelight Vigil in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A candlelight vigil in honor of George Floyd is planned for Saturday, May 30 at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe from 8:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Organizers, the I Run With Maud group of South Lake Tahoe, are asking those who plan on attending to wear a mask and stay 6-12 feet away from each other. Signs are also encouraged: #BlackLivesMatter #iRunWithMaud #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #iCantBreathe.

Floyd died after a Minneapolis police officer put his knee to Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes on May 25.

Take Care Tahoe offers signs for use in COVID-19 messaging around Lake Tahoe

Rules and regulations are ever-changing these days, but there are actions everyone should take to keep everyone healthy and safe. In coordination with local governments and health officials, Take Care Tahoe has created messages encouraging mask-wearing and social distancing, everywhere you go.

And they are offering them to the public for use in businesses, online messaging, and on social media. The files are free to use, or posters can be ordered for a small fee.

South Tahoe High students organize fundraiser to pay food tab for health care workers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Tahoe High students have started a GoFundMe account to raise funds to pay the food tab at Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe.

The "pay-it-forward” fundraising efforts began with sophomores Kaya Roberts, Claire Gurner, Sophia Aronoff, and Soleil Weed. They were working on a history project about "the change we want to see in the world" and decided to do research on mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual Western Nevada College choir debuts with 'One More Day'

Western Nevada College in Carson City, working with a core of performers from the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company, has created a virtual choir — Broadway Rising! — to share the power and beauty of Broadway during these times when live performance is no longer possible.

Since WNMTC's most inspiring experience on stage was “Les Misérables” in the fall of 2013, they thought it fitting to select “One Day More” from that musical as the musical theatre company’s first virtual project.

New TAHOE housing program in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has announced a new program that seeks to preserve existing housing stock for permanently affordable, full-time homes for Tahoe Basin employees and residents. It is called the TAHOE (Tahoe Affordable Home Ownership Enabling) program.

TAHOE has been created to do three things:

1. Provide assistance to income-qualified households searching for a home in the Tahoe Basin;
2. Enable SJCLT to purchase available homes to be made available to income-qualified Tahoe Basin employees or full-time residents;

Bread & Broth helping to ease hunger in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Nine weeks into the COVID-19 crisis, Bread & Broth is still providing food to those in the community who are being impacted by the loss or reduction of income due to the temporary closing of many of our communities’ businesses. The Nevada Food Bank will be at the parking lot of the American Legion with Christmas Cheer. The truck with fresh produce will be there from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe students show appreciation for meal delivery

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) show their appreciation daily as the bus drivers deliver daily meals to bus stops and schools around South Lake Tahoe.

From March 18 to May 7, the LTUSD drivers have delivered 26,066 meals at their stops, Monday through Friday. The meals are prepared early each day by staff and sent out on buses to their appointed routes.

Some students recently sent the drivers some "thank you" cards to show their appreciation (see photos above).

Overland Meat to hold its final food giveaway in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hundreds of people from the South Lake Tahoe community have benefited from the generosity of Overland Meat and Seafood Company at their hamburger giveaways.

The final one will be held on Monday, May 18 starting at 10:00 a.m.

The Grand Finale will have a theme of "Tahoe Dinners for Tahoe."

Raley's will be donating 500 packages of taco seasoning, Safeway is donating produce, Mission Tortilla is donating tortillas and Overland is donating over 1,200 pounds of hamburger.

The partnership will give hundreds of residents a taco dinner.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The owners of a vacation home on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have created a contest to honor the front line employees who have worked so unselfishly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Claire and Charlie McArthur, owners of The Woodsy Tahoe Cabin, are offering a free six-night stay in October at their home that sleeps ten, has lake views from all levels, and is a 30-second walk to a private homeowners beach.
