Shredding fundraiser for St. Theresa Catholic Church

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Did you spend your time at home cleaning out closets and files? Need a place to safely destroy them?

St. Theresa Catholic Church is holding its shredding fundraiser on Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the church's parking lot. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per box.

All funds raised will go to support the St. Theresa Religious Education Department to benefit the youth of the parish. The church is located at 1041 Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

As the effects from the coronavirus pandemic continue to affect families with job and income loss, community members rise to the occasion with several places to volunteers and donate.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hope Lutheran Church of the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe will resume their "Hope Full Lunch Outreach" on Fridays.

Homeless and anyone in need of a meal are invited to stop by the church on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. to receive a free sack lunch. The church is located at 930 Julie Lane at the Y, just past Jim Bagan Toyota.

South Tahoe High Rotary Interact Club makes donation to Lake Tahoe Wildlife

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Rotary Interact Club at South Tahoe High recently donated $800 to the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

Co-Presidents Dean Kallas and Serena Palaroan sent the check and a letter to the nonprofit tasked with providing temporary care for wildlife, with an explanation of the student-run club and the funds.

Second live-stream Tahoe Supports Tahoe concert to raise funds for Tahoe Magic

On Wednesday, May 6, Lake Tahoe musicians are coming together again to raise money for Tahoe families in crisis because of the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown.

In the second live stream concert hosted by Tahoe Supports Tahoe, more than a half-dozen musicians will perform from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Winning ticket pulled for Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation Hawaii drawing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation (LTEF) recently wrapped up their 2020 Hawaii Condo raffle and the winner is Jordan Richie of South Lake Tahoe.

Richie, an athletic trainer at Barton Performance Center and the Head Athletic Trainer at South Tahoe High School, had his ticket pulled by Brooklyn Pakes.

The annual raffle pulled in $8,000 for LTEF to use for their annual grants. LTEF typically allocates between $50,000 and $75,000 for educational projects in Lake Tahoe Unified School District where local students benefit from every dollar donated.

Tahoe Magic gives out over $110K to locals; More donations sought to fill need

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been a huge outpouring of support for Tahoe Magic during the COVID-19 crisis. With that support is a growing need in the South Lake Tahoe community.

In just five weeks, the South Lake Tahoe non-profit has given away over $110,000 to more than local 785 families in need. In a normal year they give out about $30,000 to deserving families.

Group started to match Lake Tahoe graduating seniors with gift-giving community members

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With high school seniors missing out on all of the traditional end-of-school activities such as prom and graduation, parents and community members around the globe have been coming up with unique ways to celebrate during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In South Lake Tahoe, Baylee Inman decided to help out grads from all schools in Lake Tahoe, including homeschooled students and started a Facebook group Adopt-a-Senior Lake Tahoe to match the students with a gift-giving angel.

Community spirit surrounds South Lake Tahoe food giveaway

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second time in as many weeks, Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe gave away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to the first 500 people to come by the store.

This time, Overland owners Brian and Kim Cohen had other businesses join in the fun.

Grass Roots gave away $10 gift cards, Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. gave away spice samples, and Safeway at Bijou added two pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables to the mix.

"This is community effort at its finest," said Brian.

On Monday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (or until supplies last), the two long-time South Lake Tahoe businesses will be giving away two pounds of hamburger and $10 Grass Roots gift cards to each family that comes by the Overland location at 2227 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident donates protective gear to Barton medical staff

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The generosity of a former South Lake Tahoe resident is keeping nurses and other members of the medical team at Barton Health safer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brian Gignoux, who spent grades K-10 and early adult life in South Lake Tahoe, heard how medical personnel across the globe were having problems obtaining life-saving protection items like surgical and N95 masks. His medical field friends in South Lake Tahoe were no different.

He talked to Barton RNs Siobhan Keller and Rachelle Pakes, friends of his from childhood, and asked what they needed.

Sugar pine seedlings to be handed out to students at South Lake Tahoe elementary schools

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A team of volunteers will be handing out sugar pine seedlings to students at four South Lake Tahoe school sites on Friday, April 24.

The Sugar Pine Foundation has given a box of seedlings to Bijou Community School, Sierra House Elementary, Tahoe Valley Elementary, and South Tahoe Middle School. The free seedlings will be given out when students pick up their meals between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. while supplies last.

At Tahoe Valley, TRex will be on hand to hand out the sugar pines, and at the Middle School, meet Hans the service dog.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

South Shore concierge service provides free grocery delivery for seniors and those in need

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A South Lake Tahoe-based concierge service is now offering free grocery delivery to seniors over the age of 65 and to those in need.

Tahoe Warm Welcome has been providing home and guest services to homeowners and visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin since 2006. Operated by two long-time locals with over 30 years of customer service experience, they are no expanding what they offer during the coronavirus pandemic to include free shopping services for seniors and anti-viral sterilization cleaning packages for the home.

Child care referrals and potential funding sources for essential workers

Choices for Children can provide essential workers with child care referrals and potential funding sources for child care during the challenging times of the coronavirus.

"We are grateful for all the essential workers that are supporting our community during these hard times," said the nonprofit agency. "We are here to help you."

Overland Meat & Seafood gives away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The line of "socially distant" people stretched down 3rd Street in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning. They were there to get the free packages of hamburger Overland Meat & Seafood Co. was giving to the community during the financially stressful times brought by the coronavirus

In business since 1987, Overland said this was their best, and largest, event in the 33 years they've been open.

Some annual events in South Lake Tahoe canceled or rescheduled due to coronavirus concerns

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - You can add the 27th annual Renaissance Festival to the list of event casualties brought about by the novel coronavirus. Add the 71st annual Highway 50 Wagon Train and two long-running events will be taking the year 2020 off.

Heavenly staff drop off another truck load of food to South Lake Tahoe nonprofits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain Resort staff delivered ten pallets full of food and beverage items to Bread & Broth on Friday and pallets of soup Monday, with pallets of granola bars and soup going to the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

Since closing, Vail Resorts in the area, Kirkwood and Heavenly, have delivered food to South Lake Tahoe non-profits, at least 25,000 pounds worth (or 12.5 tons). Previous trips to Bread & Broth included fresh fruits and vegetables.

They are also supplying staff to help with the Bread & Broth 4 Kids program, when possible.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra holds virtual Elegant Evening auction and party

Many were already living paycheck to paycheck, and now their paychecks have disappeared. It could be months before many citizens here earn money again. Even when businesses re-open, the tourism industry here will likely be deeply depressed long afterward.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary donates $20,000 to local nonprofits amidst COVID-19 emergency

STATELINE, Nev. - Due to the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas announced its immediate initial commitment and disbursement of $20,000 in cash grants to four South Lake Tahoe Community proactive support agencies - Tahoe Magic, Christmas Cheer, Giving Angels and Bread & Broth.

The club has been serving the South Shore community since 1965 and just completed an online auction in lieu of their normal annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund selects awardees of $125,000 in grants

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced its 2020 Grant Recipients. This year they received applications for grants from over 50 organizations. Of that group, 11 non-profits on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have been chosen to receive $125,000 that will be distributed.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office promotes Autism Recognition Alert Program

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In honor of Autism Awareness Month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is displaying magnets on their patrol cars for the month of April as well as sporting a newly wrapped vehicle with vinyl decals to increasing awareness throughout the community surrounding Autism Spectrum Disorder.

For the first time, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped a car with blue puzzle pieces as an inviting way for children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting.

Sierra State Parks holding Earth Day drawing contest for all ages

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting an Earth Day Drawing Contest for all ages. Show them what you love about Lake Tahoe and the planet!

Age divisions are as follows; Pre-K and Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, Grades 4-6, Grades 7-12, and Adults. There will be prizes awarded to the winner of each age division.

3D face shields created in South Lake Tahoe for Barton Hospital - Printer help needed

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Hospital would like 1000 face shields for staff during the coronavirus pandemic, and a South Lake Tahoe couple has taken on the challenge. With about 100 masks a week they are in search of help from the community in their 3D printing efforts.

Keith and Linda Cloutier, owners of Rudy's Plumbing and Heating, are currently in production of the masks. Since a 3D printer takes about 3.5 hours to print one face shield, Keith is asking for community members who have a 3D printer to join him so they can get more shields to Barton.

Christmas Cheer in great need of food donations

They have seen many more people than normal coming into their office and volunteers say it is putting a big dent on their supply.

South Lake Tahoe's Bread & Broth seeks volunteers as needs increase

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over thirty years, Bread & Broth has provided hot, nutritious meals for those facing food insecurity in the South Lake Tahoe community. They provide food on Monday and Friday evenings, and, since 2015, weekend food bags for K-8 Lake Tahoe Unified School District students.

Fundraiser set up for those out of work due to business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a large number of South Lake Tahoe employees currently out of work due to closures mandated by the fight against the coronavirus, a South Lake Tahoe woman has set up a fundraiser to help those financially hurt the most.

Roberta Hainline, housekeeping manager with Vacasa, was concerned after she had to lay off her entire staff of 22.

"I know that all of those people that lost their jobs live paycheck to paycheck. Even though they are eligible for unemployment, the need is immediate," said Hainline, who was also furloughed.

Warm Room expands and relocates to assist South Lake Tahoe homeless

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) as relocated its Warm Room operations to the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center in order to provide a 24/7 shelter for the most vulnerable residents until at least April 30.

In addition to their expanded operations they have also made the following changes:

● Set up 8 isolation bays for people experiencing non-COVID-19 symptoms.
● Providing 22 private motel rooms for our vulnerable seniors and those experiencing complex underlying health conditions.

Nightly cheer in South Lake Tahoe in support of healthcare and essential workers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Marin County has their coyote calls, New York City has their clapping, and now South Lake Tahoe will have a nightly cheer to honor and support essential workers and healthcare professionals working during the COVID-19 crisis.

Local Troy Matthews started the idea on Facebook Thursday and wants to see the community respond and go outside and give a big cheer for five minutes starting every night at 8:00 p.m.

Lake Valley Fire Protection District helping locals with food and donations

MEYERS, Calif. - The members of the Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) help the community every day as first responders and protecting the community, but they are now adding on a new role.

They have donated money as well as started a program to go grocery shopping for the elderly in their district or for those unable to get to the store due to coronavirus impacts.

Last week members of the district's foundation presented a check for $1,000 to Bread & Broth to help supply food to those in the community who are impacted by layoffs due to the coronavirus.

Vail CEO and his wife donate $2.5M to communities their resorts are located

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Once again, Vail Resorts' CEO Rob Katz and his wife Elana Amsterdam are giving back to the communities where their employees live and where their company operates.

Today, they announced a donation of more than $2.5 million to provide immediate support to those areas as all contend with the severe impacts of COVID-19.

Immediate emergency relief grants will total $1.5 million and will be distributed to communities including South Lake Tahoe.

Virtual meeting a time to explore Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra

Tahoe Magic serves the community during times of crisis

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What started out as a charity that shared the magic of the holidays with local children has now become a lifeline of support that immediately provides South Lake Tahoe families with financial assistance when they are in crisis.

The 501c3 non-profit was founded in 1994 and has helped low-income families on a year-round basis with one-time crisis funding, but that role is now growing due to the current COVID-19 health and economic crisis. Tahoe Magic recently launched its new website TahoeMagic to show how those in need can be assisted.

Barton Foundation opens COVID-19 Response Fund for community aid

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the anticipated impact of coronavirus COVID-19 in the area, the Barton Foundation has created a COVID-19 Response Fund aimed at helping community members and healthcare workers affected by the outbreak. Barton Health will match donations up to $75,000 to build the fund and help provide relief for residents.

Soroptimist Club of Tahoe Sierra creates online auction in place of Elegant Evening

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra has arrived at the very difficult decision to cancel its 31st annual Elegant Evening celebration originally scheduled for April 18, 2020. With the casinos closing and guidelines from the Center for Disease Control advising people to not attend large functions, the event will not be held this year.

But all is not lost.

When times are tough, South Lake Tahoe volunteers and businesses step up

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As one would expect in South Lake Tahoe, the community has been coming together to help others during these trying times and uncertainty.

Base Camp Pizza has been one of those businesses that have helped out the community. On Friday they dropped off 120 pizzas, 75 salads and 100 pasta dishes to Bijou Community School for families there who were picking up kids' homework and other supplies to use for at-home study. Local girl scouts donated boxes of cookies to hand out.

Lake Tahoe Education Foundation re-imagining their AleWorx fundraiser

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation and Lake Tahoe Aleworx have teamed up to raise $20,000 in 2020 for local students. The 20th of each month was to be a special night at AleWorx with proceeds going to the Foundation.

Three new COVID-19 cases in Douglas and Washoe Counties - El Dorado County still at zero

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Lake Tahoe and the rest of El Dorado County, as of 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 18.

Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) is reporting a second positive case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. This is the second case reported in the Quad County region: Carson City, Douglas, Lyon, and Storey counties.

Boys and Girls Club to offer hot supper to all kids under 18 starting Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Starting on Monday, March 23, the Boys and Girls Club Lake Tahoe will be offering a FREE 'drive through HOT supper' from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All children under the age of 18 (or 19 if still enrolled fulltime in school) are eligible.

The meals will be distributed to kids in cars from outside their Al Tahoe main clubhouse on Lyons Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. If there is no car, kids can walk in, then leave. The Club is trying to keep human contact to a minimum.
