School lunch program forms mean much more than free or reduced cost meals

Monday is the first day of school, and most parents will get several forms to fill out for each of their students, but there is one form that many may skip over if they think their children won't utilize it.

Not only does the National School Lunch Program Form give qualifying students free or reduced cost lunches and breakfasts, but it can also mean a few million dollars for the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) annually.

South Lake Tahoe housing forum brings out passionate crowd

It was an overflowing crowd at the Tahoe Beach Retreat on Wednesday evening at the housing forum hosted by the Tahoe Regional Young Professionals. A well informed panel of experts in the field of affordable housing answered a slew of questions from both the in-house crowd, and those able to ask from home via a live-stream telecast.

What was evident after two hours of discussion is that there is no one single answer to the issue of affordable housing and it will take much more than a wave of a magic wand to bring about a solution.

Tahoe Arts Project holding annual concert on the beach

Tahoe Arts Project is holding Music on the Beach, their annual summer celebration fundraiser, on the shore behind Tahoe Lakeshore Lodge on Thursday, August 25 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Musicians Trey Stone, Niall McGuiness and John Shipley return for the sunset concert and benefit raffle.

Attendees are encouraged to bring low-back beach chairs, blankets, food and drinks (alcohol is allowed).

Suggested donation is $10 and tickets are available at the door.

LTCC hires new Dean of Workforce Development and Instruction

Brad Deeds has been hired as the new Dean of Workforce Development and Instruction at Lake Tahoe Community College where he will manage the college’s various Career and Technical Education programs. Deeds will be over the Fire Academy, Culinary Arts, Commercial Music, Allied Health, the new Adult Education program, and other vocationally-focused departments on campus. He will also oversee workforce development and select instructional programs at LTCC.

The LTCC Board of Trustees gave approval for the hiring at their meeting on Tuesday night.

Johanna "Jo Jo" Conroy July 24, 1950 - July 9, 2016

After a 3 1/2 year battle with brain cancer, JoJo Conroy passed away peacefully in her garden on Saturday July 9th. She would have been 66 on July 24th. During her 43 years as a resident of South Lake Tahoe she touched many lives in a variety of capacities. She spent her summers as a banquet waitress at Edgewood Golf Course and her winters overseeing the operation of Rainbow Mountain Ski Shop. But it was her commitment to her community and friends where she truly shined.

Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari 1930- 2016

Former Sierra Sands school superintendent Anthony J. “Tony” Magliari passed away at his home in Ridgecrest, California, on June 14, 2016, at the age of 85. Born in Los Angeles on October 5, 1930, Magliari, the son of an Italian immigrant, graduated in 1948 from George Washington High School, where he served as student body president. While attending Los Angeles City College Magliari enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve and was called into active duty during the Korean War in 1951.

Missoula Children's Theater auditions for Pinocchio

Alvey, an award winning geologist with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Division is well regarded for his unique sense of humor and an uncanny resemblance to Samuel Clemens alter ego, Mark Twain.

LTCC to host open house about 4-year degree program

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and Sierra Nevada College (SNC Tahoe) are co-hosting an Open House on Thursday, June 16 at 5:00 p.m. in LTCC’s Board/Aspen Room to explore offering an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Global Business Management from LTCC’s South Lake Tahoe campus. The two colleges are seeking community and student input to gauge the level of interest in the program. As the partnership between LTCC and SNC moves forward, it will bring an accredited four-year bachelor’s degree option to LTCC’s South Shore campus for the first time.

Women of the Moose in SLT help local homeless youth

A community group effort led by the Women of the Moose (WOTM) Chapter 408 in South Lake Tahoe is helping the homeless youth of the community

WOTM help out with the kids who are part of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's McKinney Vento program. LTUSD receives an annual allocation of about $1,000 to purchase school supplies and help with bus transportation for its approximately 250 homeless students.

Revive Interior Design opens in Lake Tahoe

Interior designer, Jessie Marchesseau, recently opened Revive Interior Design – a full-service interior design and home staging firm that serves communities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Marchesseau, originally from Montana, has lived in the Lake Tahoe region for more than 15 years and has worked in local interior design and real estate industries for more than a decade. In addition to being a Tahoe local, Marchesseau has sold and designed homes in both California and Nevada, and understands the complexities of mountain and lake living.

Valhalla Boathouse Theatre celebrates 20 years in South Lake Tahoe

It once housed The Shiek, a boat named in honor of Rudolf Valentino, friend and frequent guest to the Pope Estate in South Lake Tahoe. The Shiek was the biggest and fastest boat of its time on Lake Tahoe.

In the late 1800's it housed the boats of William Tevis who owned the 75 acre sprawling estate along the South Shore.

El Dorado County names Poet Laureate

El Dorado Arts Council has inaugurated a Poet Laureate program for El Dorado County. This post, officially appointed by a conferring institution, is bestowed on a noted poet to honor his or her body of work and to celebrate poetry as an art form.

Taylor Graham was chosen by a panel of literary experts because of the caliber of her work, her engagement with poets and writers in the community, and the critical acclaim her work has garnered.

Lion King opens on the Tahoe Valley stage

Dr. Kelly Shanahan retiring after 22 years in South Lake Tahoe

"It was a sign that I need to retire," said Dr. Kelly Shanahan.

Shanahan sat down with me recently, to reflect on her 22 years in South Lake Tahoe, and the almost 10,000 babies she's delivered in her career.

The sign?

Without putting her office up for sale she received a phone call from a local realtor, asking if she'd like to sell the building that houses her Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health.

The potential buyer came to look at the property, and shortly after, a vacationing doctor called to see if she'd like to sell her practice.

Preger to Speak About Photographing Burning Man April 5

"From the Lens of Eleanor Preger," is an exhibition at Sierra Nevada College that includes images from Burning Man 2011-15, and the photographer will talk about her art during the closing reception for the show on April 5. Crimson Rose, Burning Man co-founder, and Maria Partridge, Artist Advocate for the Burning Man Foundation, are both expected to make comments during the evening.

Soroptimists hand out donations to South Lake Tahoe non-profits

Members of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) handed out checks to 22 different project that are created by non-profits to serve the women and children of South Lake Tahoe on Thursday.

Jail inmates create colorful Easter eggs for South Lake Tahoe kids

Can you imagine dying 4,000 eggs for your family's Easter egg hunt? Probably not as many of us may have had enough after two dozen, but that is exactly what local inmates are tasked with.

Each year, the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club hosts a community egg hunt at Lake Tahoe Community College, and for the last ten years the inmates at the El Dorado County Jail have been coloring the hard boiled eggs for the event.

Normally the kitchen crew at the jail both boils the eggs and colors them, but due to a staffing shortage at the jail they could only color them.

The guests have arrived for the 10th wedding anniversary of the couple but they are met with mayhem. Charlie, the Deputy Mayor of New York, has shot himself and his wife, Myra, is missing. Although Charley’s injury is minor, misunderstandings and rumors abound in this fast paced sophisticated farce.

Tibetan Monks returning to South Lake Tahoe

Tibetan monks from the Gaden Shartse Monastery are returning to South Lake Tahoe from April 1 to April 6 with a full schedule of ancient and colorful participatory activities, Dharma talks, meditations, and cultural rituals to promote inner healing.

Events, unless otherwise noted, will be at the Blue Angel Cafe, located at 1132 Ski Run Blvd.

All events are donation based and all proceeds will go towards funding the construction of the Phukhang College House at Gaden Shartse, which houses over 600 exiled monks in the Tibetan Refugee Zone in India.

A play you'll be dying to go to at Lake Tahoe Community College

Bodies will be dropping like flies as mystery, chaos, and laughter prevail during The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, a Hollywood murder mystery being performed by by the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College.

The play, written by John Bishop and directed by Susan Boulanger, will be at the school's Duke Theater March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and LTCC alumnus winner in international writing contest

Former South Lake Tahoe resident and Lake Tahoe Community College graduate, Ryan Row (pen name: Alan Wor) has been officially announced as a winner in the "Writers of the Future" contest sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard. The contest, one of the most prestigious writing competitions, is in its 32nd year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction.

Legendary Tower of Power to headline 2016 Concert Under the Stars benefit for Greenhouse Project

Soul and funk supergroup Tower of Power will headline the 2016 Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project in Carson City. The concert outside of Cafe at Adele’s, will be July 14. Ticket sales will be announced soon, said Adele’s owner Charlie Abowd via his Facebook page.
