SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tuesday's evening meeting of the South Lake Tahoe City Council will have a full agenda that includes replacement of aging snow removal equipment, a Lime License Agreement, and temporary suspension of the City's Residential Allocation Procedures.

Up until only a few decades ago, for as long as humans have existed, parenting has been guesswork. New parents would get information and guidance from their elders or peers based on anecdotal evidence. We are lucky enough to live in an exciting time where we have research to find evidence for what parenting strategies and qualities lead to the most successful outcomes for children. Of course, there is not one cookie cutter way for each child, and being flexible in learning what works best for your child is essential.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and offers our community a time to increase awareness of the issues related to child maltreatment, identify strategies to strengthen families and understand how everyone in our community can be an everyday hero for children.

Strong, nurturing communities support families and play a role in preventing child abuse and neglect and promoting child and family well-being. Support can come in the form of helping to watch the kids for a couple of hours,

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Women’s Community Fund has announced their 2019 grant recipients. This year, there were over 27 organizations who applied for the grants, with $84,000 being distributed to 14 non-profit organizations

Focus Grant recipients in the category of Poverty, Housing, or Basic Needs (up to $10,000 each):

• Tahoe Magic, Inc. (Project: One Time Family Emergency Housing Help Fund)

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a day of crazy socks, mismatched shoes and untied shoelaces at the Sierra House Elementary campus at Al Tahoe Learning Center Thursday in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day.

Kindergarten teacher Amy Terpening organized #RockYourSocks day in her classroom and held a surprise celebration of her student Dylan Polan who has Down Syndrome. The six-year-old came through a tunnel created by her fellow students and then sat down to be "interviewed" by her teacher. The students displayed paper socks they decorated with fun shapes and colors.

Patient Safety Awareness Week is an annual recognition event intended to encourage everyone to learn more about healthcare safety. It’s an opportunity for hospitals and health systems to share their work and resources on patient safety, safety culture and patient engagement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues will be held in South Lake Tahoe February 22-23 at MontBleu Resort.

Originally scheduled for the LTCC Duke Theater, the fundraiser had to move due to some broken water pipes in the theater on Tuesday.

The Vagina Monologues returns for its 17th year in South Lake Tahoe with a goal this year of raising $15,000 for scholarships for female-identified students at Lake Tahoe Community College.

South Tahoe High School students and staff are invited to a presentation on avalanches on February 27 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the school's Angora and Cascade rooms in the student union.

Popular avalanche educator Richard Bothwell will be the presenter for the event which is sponsored by the Nickolay Dodov Foundation Avalanche Education and Backcountry Safety program. This is the fourth year the foundation has made the presentation to South Tahoe High students.

As January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, one might ask, “exactly what is human trafficking?”

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons by means of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, for the purpose of exploitation. Sex trafficking is defined as a commercial sex act that is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age. Of particular note is the automatic classification of trafficking in children under 18 years of age.

December 3-7, 2018 is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week and the California Highway Patrol is joining with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) to bring awareness of programs and challenges as drivers age.

On Monday, the Reno-Tahoe Winter Games Coalition (RTWGC) announced it has officially declined an invitation to bid for a future Winter Olympics. With their departure, Salt Lake City and Denver remain as the last two selected finalists by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to be a future bid city.

They had a deadline of November 9, 2018 to submit responses to a detailed workbook covering the areas of bid vision, venue planning, transportation planning, security, budgets and public engagements among other topics.

I am surprised that some people call Measure T “too extreme,” when the measure a) still allows fulltime residents to rent out their houses for 30 days per year, b) promotes the development and expansion of VHRs in areas properly zoned as commercial or part of the Tourist Core.

Dance of Hope, a cultural music and dance-touring program from Uganda, has been in South Shore schools all week, connecting youth to the sounds of the world with passionate rhythms, sensational sounds, and exhilarating and colorful choreography.

They also stopped by Marcia Sarosik's dance studio in South Lake Tahoe to work with middle school students who will be accompanying them on the MontBleu stage Friday night during Tahoe Art's Project Dance of Hope performance.

Talking about suicide can be uncomfortable. If you have a loved one that you are concerned about, you may be nervous to ask personal questions such as, “Have you thought about ending your life?” After all, what if you offend them? What if they get angry? Or, what if they have just been waiting for someone to ask, and now that you have, they feel safe sharing their feelings and no longer feel alone.

Suicide is a public health issue that impacts everyone. For some of us, we are reminded of suicide daily. Yet, it is important to know that suicide can be prevented.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is one of the top ten causes of death in the United States. The leading reason for suicide is unmanaged depression or a mood disorder. Considering that 20 to 25 percent of Americans are affected by depression, it is important to know the signs that may help save someone’s life.

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and a good time to familiarize yourself with the tools, resources and steps you can take in addressing suicide.

Suicide can be prevented if the signs are detected and the right actions are taken. Healthy coping skills are critical for dealing with incidents of trauma throughout life. Unfortunately, some people find that life stressors are too difficult and some choose negative ways to cope.

The most critical warning signs of suicide are:
- Talking about wanting to die or about suicide

A 2.5-mile fun run (and stroll) will be held on the South Shore Sunday, September 9 to raise awareness of Hydrocephalus, a condition most have never heard of yet it affects over one million people in the United States.

Runners (and walkers) will start at Shoreline of Tahoe on Kahle Drive in Stateline and end at Round Hill Pines Beach Resort. The cost is $40 for those 15 and older, $20 for kids 14 and under. Those running the course will start at 8:30 a.m., and walkers/strollers start at 8:45 a.m.

Costumes and tutus are encouraged, as well as the wearing of "Hydrocephalus Blue."

The California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Valley Division and Golden Gate Divisions, having jurisdiction over the Sacramento regions and San Francisco Bay Area, are partnering with the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) to participate in an “I-80 Challenge.”

This effort aims to reduce distracted and reckless driving along the 615 miles of Interstate 80 from San Francisco, Calif. to the Nevada/Utah Stateline from Monday, August 27 – Labor Day, September 3, 2018, by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement, and education along this section of the National Highway System.

The annual Lake Tahoe Summit held this week at Sand Harbor State Park marked the 22nd time government officials, public agencies, non-profit environmental groups, the public and other groups came together to renew their focus and commitment on preserving the beauty of Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless has announced they are hosting the Tahoe Beach Bash, featuring the 4th annual Homebrew for the Homeless on Saturday, July 28 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Tahoe Beach Retreat and Lodge in South Lake Tahoe.

This family-friendly event, presented by Tahoe Beach Retreat, features live music, homebrew beer competition, lakeside BBQ, bounce house, local vendors, child-friendly obstacle course, and other entertaining activities for people of all ages.
