It is January of 1985 and the Super Bowl was being held fairly close to Lake Tahoe at Stanford in Palo Alto. Due to the proximity, a group of VIPs was invited to Caesars Tahoe for a few days of pre-Super Bowl fun before flying to the game with a casino host.

South Lake Tahoe Welcomes First Baby Born in 2014

Joshua Tapia-Hernandez arrived a day late, giving him the honors of being the first baby born in 2014 at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

His parents are Adriana and Abraham Tapia of South Lake Tahoe and came into the world at six pounds, fourteen ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

Joshua was born at 5:24pm on Thursday. When mother Adriana arrived at the hospital in the early afternoon, she was very calm. She said her calmness even amazed her physician, Dr. Spielvogel, who was surprised how quickly the baby was born.

Barton's Occupational Health Services Move to Stateline

Barton Health’s Occupational Health Services has moved over to Nevada. Formally located at Barton Hospital, the medical office has relocated to the Stateline Medical Center at 155 Highway 50, in Suite 203 (second floor).

Occupational Health Services, OHS, provides services for businesses to help improve the health, safety and environment of people at work. Services include workers compensation treatment, physicals, and employment health tests and screenings. Preventative programs are also available, including educational seminars, wellness screenings, and work-related immunizations.

It was just a few short years ago, in the midst of the Great Recession, both public agencies and private companies throughout the basin were in the middle of layoffs, service reductions and unemployment hovering above 17%. Incline Village Resident Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society invites everyone to their annual Holiday in History Open House on Saturday and Sunday, December 7-8. On Saturday from 11 to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, visitors can tour the 1930s log cabin, view a Victorian holiday scene, enjoy free cider and cookies and children can even call the North Pole from a special antique phone! The event is free.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Kingsbury Grade Crash Sends 4 to Hospital

11-4-13 update 12 pm: The Nevada Highway Patrol has released more information on Friday's 2 car accident on Kingsbury Grade. The occupants of the Yaris were the driver Dora Aranda, 27 of Azusa, CA, Christopher Ashlock, 23 of San Diego, CA and Melissa Dominguez, 28 of Rialto, CA. Zephyr Cove resident Donna Janaczek, 59, was the driver of the Subaru which was hit by Aranda as she apparently tried to over correct her car's drifting over the right roadway edge, causing her to cross the center line.

Kayaker Transported to Barton Hospital After Overturning in Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office patrol boat and search and rescue volunteers responded to the call of kayakers in distress on Lake Tahoe's wind whipped waters on October 3. In a report released today, Sgt. Steve Fleischmann of EDCSO reported that they received a call saying that multiple kayakers were in the water and needed help near Camp Richardson. When the rescue team arrived they found two kayakers in the water, two overturned kayaks and an additional kayaker still in his boat attempting to assist the others.

Street Vibrations Bringing Motorcyclists to Area. 1 Killed, 4 Hurt in Tahoe and Carson Collisons

With thousands of motorcyclists expected for Street Vibrations there is extra caution urged on public roadways. As of noon today there have been 3 accidents involving bikers on the road in Lake Tahoe and Carson City, resulting in 1 death and 4 hospitalizations.

Two people were hospitalized after a crash shortly before 10 a.m. at North Carson Street and Medical Parkway. A man was flown by Care Flight to Renown hospital; the other person was taken by ambulance to Renown.

Funding opportunities for South Lake Tahoe area charities will once again be made possible after the American Century Championship, Lake Tahoe's celebrity golf tournament, agreed to donate $85,000, according to a Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority news release.

Casting Call for LTCC’s Fall Production of 'The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later'

The Lake Tahoe Community College Theatre Arts Department will be holding auditions for its fall theatre production of “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the college’s Duke Theatre.

This production commemorates the 15th anniversary of Matthew Shepard’s death. Several events will be presented at the college in association with this production, including a screening of the brand new documentary film, “Matthew Shepard is a Friend of Mine.”

Former South Lake Tahoe Resident Faces Second Murder Charge

Former South Lake Tahoe resident George Aaron Carver, 40, was arraigned in San Bernardino on charges he committed another murder over the Labor Day weekend. Carver, who was a patient at Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, was charged with the first degree murder of fellow patient, Kenneth Taylor, 65.

In 2006, Carver was sentenced to 4 years in prison for the hammer attack on a Cool, Calif., man. While serving time in the Napa State Prison he was charged with the murder of patient David Wengall. He was found guilty of manslaughter on that charge.

NHP: Carson City man dies from injuries in Highway 50 hit and run at Stateline

A 31-year-old Carson City man hit by a vehicle that left the scene of the accident last month along Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe at Stateline has died from his injuries, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports. Cody J. Dobson died on Friday, Aug. 23 from injuries in the early morning accident, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

On the morning of Aug. 10, NHP troopers were dispatched to a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian who was struck just east of the casino corridor near Lake Parkway in Douglas County, said Allen.

South Lake Tahoe man suspected of DUI in crash that injured mother and two children

A 39-year-old South Lake Tahoe man faces a felony DUI charge after a head-on vehicle crash Tuesday that injured a mother and two children in town visiting, according to South Lake Tahoe police.

Dara Siev was arrested for felony DUI and booked into the custody of the El Dorado County Jail in South Lake Tahoe. The crash was reported at 4:45 p.m. in the 2700 block of Lake Tahoe Boulevard near Blue Lake Avenue. The injuries sustained to the mother and children ages 4 and 8 were reported to be not life-threatening, South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams said.

Arrest made in early morning stabbing death in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe police have arrested a man they believe stabbed a 57-year-old family member to death early Wednesday morning on Wildwood Avenue.

Sean-Paul Andrew MacIntire, 32, of South Lake Tahoe faces first degree murder charges in the stabbing death of Shirley Gordon, said South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams.

A 31-year-old man remains in critical condition Monday after being struck by a vehicle that sped away in the Stateline area of Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 early Saturday morning, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Pedestrian critically injured in hit and run along Highway 50 in Stateline

A 31-year-old Carson City man was critically injured early Saturday morning at Lake Tahoe after being hit by a Dodge pickup that sped away on Highway 50 and Lake Parkway in Stateline, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

This hit and run was report 3:13 a.m. The 31-year-old Carson City man was walking on the road just east of the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa when he was hit. It is possible the man may have been struck by more than one vehicle, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

The Nevada Highway Patrol continues to investigate a fatal July 30 crash on Highway 50 east of Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe in which a 3-year-old toddler died.

Two people were taken by Care Flight Sunday afternoon after a motorcycle crash on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

Update: More details on fatal plane crash in South Lake Tahoe

A single engine Mooney airplane crashed shortly after take off from the South Lake Tahoe airport at approximately 11:10 AM today.

The plane was observed by numerous witnesses begin to lose altitude after take off, and bank sharply into a wooded area east of the airport. The plane crashed into some large pine trees and flipped over.

The male pilot, Steven Lefton 67 years of age of Palo Alto, CA was killed on impact. His wife, Karen Lefton sustained moderate injuries and was pinned in the wreckage of the plane.

South Lake Tahoe emergency responders rescue man drowning at Tahoe Keys

A man who nearly drowned earlier this week at Lake Tahoe in the Tahoe Keys owes his life to those who saw him struggle and dialed 911, and members of the South Lake Tahoe Fire Department and El Dorado County Search and Rescue team that swam in and saved him.

Witnesses on Monday saw the man in trouble while he was swimming near the boat docks and called 911. South Lake Tahoe Fire Department responded and was escorted out to where the man was seen swimming, said Fire Chief Bruce Martin.

South Lake Tahoe man dies in stabbing, suspect remains at large

A 28-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was stabbed to death early Saturday morning and a suspect in the killing remains at large, South Lake Tahoe police say.

The incident began as a fight on Pioneer Trail near the Americana Village Suites and was reported to authorities at around 3:30 a.m., said Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department. The victim, who was in a fight with the suspect and other men, was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital by family members and died from a stab wound to the torso area.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s.

Bicyclist runs red light, crashes into skateboarder

On Wednesday, July 17 at around 8:30 p.m. South Lake Tahoe Police officers responded to the intersection of US Highway 50 with Heavenly Village Way to investigate an injury traffic collision.

Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bicycle southbound on US Highway 50 in the center left turn lane. He was approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way. Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe, was riding his skateboard, and in the company of other pedestrians, while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk.

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe police reports recent surge in auto thefts, attempted thefts

During the nine days of July, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department has investigated several thefts and attempted thefts of vehicles in the City. The targeted victim vehicles appear to be vans in particular.

Barton Memorial Hospital celebrates 50th anniversary

It’s hard to imagine South Lake Tahoe without a hospital. But before Barton Memorial Hospital opened on Nov. 23, 1963, there were few nearby services for the sick and injured.

“All my children were born in Reno or St. Mary’s because we didn’t have a doctor or a hospital,” said longtime resident Patty Olson, who helped organize fundraising for Barton in the late 1950s.

Head-on crash near Zephyr Cove sends three to hospital

A head on crash on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning sent three to the hospital, one via Care Flight, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

NHP troopers continue to investigate why two vehicles collided on US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove in Douglas County earlier today. The accident took place approximately a half-mile west of Zephyr Cove at around 6:50 am Wednesday morning.

Lodi woman identified in Zephyr Cove fatal crash

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a Lodi, Calif., woman as the victim of a two-vehicle fatal crash that happened Sunday on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe.

Reyna Vizcaara, 24, died at the scene of the crash, reported at 2:55 p.m., said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. Four others were injured and taken to area hospitals, including three Carson City residents. Two remain hospitalized.

Nine rescued from Lake Tahoe after boat flips

Nine people were rescued Saturday after their boat took on water and flipped over near Dollar Point in Lake Tahoe, the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office reports.

Lt. Pete Van Arnum said El Dorado County Sheriff’s boat unit and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a report of a vessel taking on water near Dollar Point in Lake Tahoe at around 2 p.m.

Barton Health’s 'Doctor of the Year' honored by staff; cancer survivor says 'thank you' for saving her life

It’s not every day Dr. Gregory Eyre, from Barton General Surgery, gets called into Barton Health’s, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Clint Purvance’s office — especially when he’s in-between surgical cases. But, on Tuesday, March 26, he rounded the corner at Barton Memorial Hospital’s nowflake Lobby and was greeted by Dr. Purvance and quickly surrounded by applause and the faces of smiling Barton staff.

Inmate dies after collapsing at El Dorado County Jail in Placerville

An El Dorado County Jail inmate died late Friday after collapsing in an outside recreation yard at the Placerville detention facility, authorities said.

James Thomas Clark, 53, of West Sacramento, was given CPR by jail officers and then taken to Marshall Hospital where he died, said Lt. Tim Becker of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.

There were no obvious signs of foul play and the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office and the DA's office are investigating.

South Lake Tahoe man admits to Sunday burglary at South Shore Bikes

South Lake Tahoe police arrested a man following a burglary Sunday of South Shore Bikes on Emerald Bay Road.
Lee Sparks, 34, was arrested early Monday at Barton Memorial Hospital and admitted to the burglary and taking a bike, South Lake Tahoe police report.

Sparks was at the hospital being treated for cuts to his arms. Blood was found at the business where officers noted Sparks allegedly had forced entry into the shop through a roof event and exited through a window.
