2016 is the 26th year that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency has handed out its "Best in the Basin" award for projects in the Lake Tahoe basin that demonstrate exceptional planning and implementation and compatibility with Lake Tahoe’s environment and communities.
During Wednesday's TRPA board meeting in Kings Beach, the nine winners for the year were honored.
The City of South Lake Tahoe was one of those recipients for the Bijou Bike Park project, a collaborative effort between the City and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association.
Firefighters killed in 1926 fire to be remembered in ceremony

It was 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28 in the year 1926. Fire had broken out at the Jack Smith Ranch at the base of Clear Creek Canyon above Carson City, Nev.
Flames were high, and the fire traveled up the canyon rapidly, getting ever so close to the source of timber for all of the state's mines at Glenbrook. The fire also burned several ranches. Strong winds fanned those flames, and caused the fire to reverse itself and come down Kings Canyon. Again, it reversed itself and raced up Kings Canyon one more.

SR28 construction schedule to change to meet October deadline

Crews working on the SR28 Shared Use Path/Safety/Stormwater project in Incline Village will start a 24-hours-a-day schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 21, and then from Monday, Sept. 26 to Friday, Oct. 7.
The Nevada Department of Transportation has announced the updated late-September/early-October construction schedule to meet their original Phase 1 completion date of October 20.
Motorists should anticipate delays of up to 30 minutes with one-lane flagger controlled closures near Hidden Beach, one mile south of Incline Village. (During Phase 1, the average wait time has been 5-15 minutes.)

Construction crews moving right along on SR28 road project

The first phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project along State Route 28 from Sand Harbor to Incline Village is now 25 percent completed.
Part of the completion includes a “shoofly,” a temporary lane detour around the existing road to keep traffic flow of one lane in each direction at Tunnel Creek
Upon completion the project will:
Include three plus miles of shared-use path from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor
Relocate and also organize shoulder-parking areas near Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek Café

Cyclists in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee now have a new tool to use when navigating trails and roads thanks to the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion.
They have unveiled an interactive, online map, one that was designed to match the needs of people biking around Tahoe. It provides bike route directions, elevation profiles and location information for amenity and safety concerns, while at the same time offering an opportunity for community input.
Nevada Governor Sandoval joins others as SR28 pathway project breaks ground

A two-three year project to create a three-mile shared-use path as well as enhance safety, accessibility and water quality on State Route 28 officially got underway Friday with a groundbreaking ceremony at Sand Harbor. Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval led the festivities that will improve the busy and narrow highway which sees more than 2.5 million vehicles and 2,000 pedestrians and bicyclists.
The path will run from the south end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park.
Generation Green teens build new boardwalk at Taylor Creek

A new boardwalk on the Taylor Creek Rainbow Trail was officially opened on Friday as Generation Green celebrated the results of their labor with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The 100 foot boardwalk replaces an often flooded path around the popular stream profile chamber, a path further weakened by beavers boring underneath what used to be full of asphalt.

"It's going to be an interesting journey," then-TRPA director Juan Palma told Bob Mecay back in 2002. Little did Mecay know then that it would take until 2016 to see completion of that journey.
Mecay, President of Tahoe Beach Club, unveiled the end of the journey in a beachfront groundbreaking ceremony Monday in a spot that will see 143 condominium residences, a private beach club, two to five-bedroom condominiums, a private pier, lakefront clubhouse, health club, spa and pool.

Weekday lane closures will begin today, August 15, State Route 28 south of Incline Village as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) starts work on a multi-year project to construct a shared use path and make other roadway safety and water quality improvements.
Through fall, drivers should anticipate periodic construction-related lane closures on State Route 28 in the Ponderosa Ranch and Tunnel Creek areas south of Incline Village.

The United States is taking a pro-active role in stopping this crime. Both the Democrats and Republicans announced at their conventions that they have priortized the fight to combat labor and sex trafficking.

El Dorado County is holding a public meeting about the Meyers Corridor Plan on Thursday, July 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the California Conservation Corps Building at 1949 Apache Ave. in Meyers.
Staff will be presenting the three options on roadway and path improvements that are aimed at providing attractive and safe transportation options for the area for those that work, play and visit Meyers. The targeted 1.3 mile stretch along Highway 50 and Highway 89 will see lighting, signage, landscaping and a reduction of reliance on cars with increased improvements for walkers and bikers.

The Evans Family Garden received a makeover on July 1 when members of the California Conservation Corps/Tahoe Center joined representatives of the South Tahoe Public District, Tahoe Resources Conservation District, and members of the Evans family at the site on Mt. Olympia Circle.
The groups weeded, did path rehabilitation, sheet mulching and re-planting.
$583 million to be spent on California roads; Over $36 million in SLT

The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has adopted 156 projects, valued at $583 million, to support needed upkeep on California’s aging roads and bridges, make upgrades to transit and rail systems and encourage use of alternative forms of transportation, including biking and walking. One major project in South Lake Tahoe has been adopted.

Mental health kiosks around South Lake Tahoe provide resources and information

There is a new resource in South Lake Tahoe for those seeking information on mental health resources. Finding help for someone experiencing a mental health crisis can be difficult and it can also be a lofty task for a family member or friend seeking support for a loved one in need.
Six mental health kiosks have been placed through the community, each one with a highlight of local mental health services available along with educational materials. Brochures are in both English and Spanish, and updated regularly.
2nd annual Tahoe Games Bike Night Series starts Friday

The Tahoe Games, the unique nighttime bike series at Lake Tahoe Golf Cours, returns this summer with the first night on Friday, June 24.
Cyclists on non-motorized bikes go cross-country over fairways, through the sand bunkers, into the rough and over the bridges, all while illuminated. All ages had a blast at this event last summer.
Sierra Cycle Works will be on hand with bike demos and raffle prizes for competitors. Helmets bike lights, headlamps, glow sticks, decorated bikes and costumes are all strongly encouraged.

Major restoration project planned for Taylor and Tallac Creek area

The U.S. Forest Service is planning a project to restore the Taylor and Tallac creek ecosystems, an area that provides habitat for numerous protected wildlife speciesfas well as being an important hydrological connection to Lake Tahoe.
Named the Taylor and Tallac Restoration Project, the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will restore the large wetland complex where the two creeks were once connected through a series of four swales.
Public comment is sought on the Environmental Assessment, Initial Study and Initial Environmental Checklist.

Rock Tahoe Half-Marathon sells out each of first two years in Lake Tahoe

The 2nd annual Rock Tahoe Half-Marathon heads to Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 18. The 2,000 spots for runners are already full, filling up three weeks before the event. The course takes the participants down 1,000 feet in elevation as they pass some of Tahoe's iconic views.

The popular historical walking and biking tour through the Al Tahoe neighborhood in South Lake Tahoe has taken a big step forward and is now easy for everyone to participate.
Joining forces, the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Tahoe Historical Society have placed permanent posts in nine locations through the neighborhood, all in spots where history took place.
"History Lives Here!" was rolled out in the summer of 2015 as part of the City's 50th anniversary celebration. Now with the posters placed on permanent posts, the historical spots are not only fun to find, but easy to see.

Leave No Trace events in South Lake Tahoe to raise awareness

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and its Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers team are partnering with the Lake Tahoe Outreach Committee and other Lake Tahoe organizations to host community events and educational activities June 6-13. As visitors flock to the outdoor recreation wonderland that is Lake Tahoe the trails, beaches and forests are experiencing an increase in use and the associated impacts of trash, trail erosion and shoreline degradation.

Volunteers can meet at one of four locations throughout South Tahoe to pick up litter from the areas around our bike paths. Then we’ll get together at the League to Save Lake Tahoe office located at 2608 Lake Tahoe Boulevard for a free lunch, raffle and celebration after 12:00 p.m. All ages are welcome and all supplies will be provided.
We encourage volunteers to ride their bike, which also makes you eligible to enter a free raffle for a chance to win a prize.
CHP looking for South Lake Tahoe area Senior Volunteers and Explorers

Even though the bike paths through South Lake Tahoe are relatively safe, those using them should exercise caution at all times and be aware of their surroundings, especially when going by areas of thick brush and low lighting.
After the May 4, 2016 stabbing of two men on the isolated section of bike trail behind Meeks Lumber, SLTPD Lt. Brian Williams offered that advice for the bikers and walkers that utilize the trails.

Work on a new driveway and parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins the week of May 1, 2016 when the first stage of the Zephyr Cove Stables Upgrade Project begins. Crews will be upgrading existing facilities, trails and utilities to meet current building code and accessibility standards and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to improve water quality.
This is a joint project between the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

El Dorado County is proposing roadway and multi-us path improvements for the Meyers community, and they are inviting the public to participate during three different outreach meetings on Friday, April 22.
The proposed changes are meant to make the transportation options more safe and attractive for those living in the area as well those visiting or passing through. One option already mentioned by Caltrans is the addition of a roundabout at the Highway 50/Highway 89 intersection to slow down traffic coming from Echo Summit.
Sierra snowpack ends season at 97% of average

A "Miracle March" never materialized in the Sierra Nevada in 2016 and current snowpack shows that it would have been necessary to get totals above average, something needed to combat the drought in California.
In the last official snow survey of the year at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe, the snow was 58.4 inches deep with a water content of 26 inches, just 97 percent of the long-term average in that location.

Construction is scheduled to begin May 1 in South Lake Tahoe at what is being called the "Zephyr Cove Resort Corral and Bike Path Construction Project." When completed, there will be 1,500 feet of new pathways between the stop light at Zephyr Cove Resort and Warrior Way, new paved parking areas and improved erosion control and water quality areas due to a collaborative effort between the U.S. Forest Service, Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

Last week, March 15th and 16th, an estimated 75 volunteers participated in the South Shore Business Walk coordinated by the Tahoe Chamber, Tahoe Prosperity Center, El Dorado County, and the Lake Tahoe Adult Education Consortium to collect workforce data from local businesses.
