Submitted by paula on Thu, 11/17/2016 - 3:19pmThey say it's always hard to say goodbye, and that was evident Tuesday evening during the final board meeting for three of the five Lake Tahoe Unified School Board members.
After nine years on the board, Dr. Larry Green chose to not seek a third term, and Dr. Michael Doyle lost in his re-election bid. Adam Jones filled the seat of Sue Novasel for the past two years after she became a county supervisor. He chose not to run this November.
El Dorado County still needs to count over 23,000 votes
Submitted by paula on Tue, 11/15/2016 - 11:12pmThe election was seven days ago, but the final ballots cast in El Dorado County have yet to be tabulated, and it might not be until Friday for the results of over 20,000 ballots are released. Another 3,000 provisional ballots should be counted by Monday.
As of 5:00 p.m. November 15, the 20,000 ballots were about to be scanned.

She showed true patience and skill in coaching nine 7-year-old girls. I got to know Annie during this time and was impressed with her enthusiasm for our youth and our community.

Today's physical education at schools has taken on a whole new focus, and Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe is being honored for what they do on a daily basis.
The school received recognition for their outstanding efforts in creating an active school environment under First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative, Her plan is dedicated to ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity a day is the norm in K-12 schools.

The state line is a blur to me because I view the South Shore as one community. I have two children currently in high school, one at Whittell and one at STHS; I also have another child who graduated from Whittell and is now a college freshman. I believe that a good public education system is the great equalizer in America, and that every child has a right to the best education possible.

Stump speeches and meeting candidates via a speed-dating format will give voters in the South Lake Tahoe area a way to get to know their future elected officials on October 25 at the Lake Tahoe Community College from 5:30 p.m. to 7::45 p.m.
The evening will start out with each candidate for South Lake Tahoe City Council as well as the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, Lake Tahoe Community College and South Tahoe Public Utility District boards, giving a 1.5 minute "stump speech." Then they'll move to pre-assigned tables where they will meet voters in an up close and personal way.

Since coming to Lake Tahoe, she has jumped into the community with great energy and commitment. For example, she is an adjunct faculty member of Lake Tahoe Community College and co-teacher at Tahoe Parents Nursery School with Aileen Yure and Jennifer David. She served as member of the Sierra House Elementary PTA Board as a co-grant coordinator, classroom volunteer, and also volunteers with the Coalition for the Homeless and Warm Room Advisory Council.
Angela Swanson back on Lake Tahoe Unified School Board
Submitted by admin on Tue, 09/27/2016 - 9:17pmAngela Swanson, who was a Lake Tahoe Unified School Board member from 2005-2009 is back on the board, this time to replace Ginger Nicolay-Davis who left in June to accept a job with the school district. She was interviewed and voted in Tuesday night during the LTUSD board meeting. Her term will last until December, 2018.
The school district accepted applications for the open seat, and Swanson was the lone candidate so Tuesday's interview and vote was just a formality.
Swanson also served on the South Lake Tahoe City Council for a term from 2010-2014.
South Tahoe High student sworn in as student rep on LTUSD Board
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/15/2016 - 1:52pmDuring Tuesday's meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Trustees, Board President, Barbara Bannar, administered the "Oath of Office" to this year's designated Student Representative, South Tahoe High's ASB President Kendra Conard.
Conard, 17, said she is looking forward to her year as the representative on the board.
As ASB President, Conard said her main goals this year will be to get more students involved in school activities, for them to get more school spirit, and to connect the South Lake Tahoe community more with South Tahoe High and their students.
Applications for open Lake Tahoe Unified School Board seat due Friday
Submitted by paula on Wed, 09/14/2016 - 7:04pmAs of Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board meeting, no applications for the open seat on the board had been completed and filed, though two are expected according to Shannon Chandler, Dr. Jim Tarwater's Executive Assistant.
The seat opened up when Ginger Nicolay-Davis, the Board Member from Trustee Area 2, had to leave the board when she was hired by LTUSD as a speech pathologist.

Tahoe Valley red carpet greeting; Community meets Mt. Tallac students
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/29/2016 - 8:28pmThe doors opened at all seven schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Monday, welcoming students back after their summer vacations.
At Tahoe Valley Elementary, not only were the doors opened, but the red carpet was rolled out, literally. Staff and members of the California Highway Patrol greeted students as they entered the school with fanfare and balloon in celebration of their return.
Not only did the students enjoy the processional, but parents, staff and officers did as well.

Trustee Ginger Nicolay-Davis resigns from school board, opens up Area 2 seat

During their monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 23, the LTUSD board will officially announce the opening on the board and their intent to appoint a new trustee who must reside in Trustee Area #2.
Nicolay-Davis resigned effective August 9.
Clearer picture now for November's elections in South Lake Tahoe

There are now ten people interested in sitting on the South Lake Tahoe City Council. With a deadline of 5:00 p.m. on August 17, the last of the candidates submitted their paperwork just under the wire.

Kingsbury Middle School sold to Glenbrook company
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2016 - 6:10pmThe Douglas County School District has found a buyer for the old Kingsbury Middle School which had been on the market since 2012. The school board voted to accept a $3.15 million offer on the property from Lake Parkway LLC, a corporation listed in Zephyr Cove, Nev.
DCSD closed Kingsbury Middle School on 1900 Echo Drive in Stateline in the 2008-2009 school year due to low enrollment at the schools at the lake. The school site had an original price tag of $4 million.
"This is wonderful news," said DCSD Board President Ross Chichester.
Slew of candidates needed for local positions this fall

There will be two open seats for City Council, three seats for LTUSD School Board of Trustees, two for LTCC Board of Trustees, and two for the STPUD Board of Directors. All will be voted on during the next election, November 8, 2016.
Douglas County voters select two new commissioners

Dave Nelson earned the support of 3,626 voters, given him a 12.2 percent edge over incumbent Greg Lynn in the District 1 race. Larry Walsh got 58.41 percent of the vote for District 3 over planning commissioner Frank Godecke.
STHS student thanked for her year on LTUSD Board

The South Tahoe High Junior spent the year attending the board meetings twice a month, sharing the activities happening at the school.
Three seats open for LTUSD School Board election in November

Governed by a team of five members, only Board President Barbara Bannar and member Ginger Nicolay-Davis are not up for re-election. Seats held by incumbents Adam Jones, Dr. Michael Doyle and Dr. Larry Green will be on the ballot.
Adam Jones, who represents Trustee Area #1, was appointed to the Board in March 2015 following the resignation of Sue Novasel.
El Dorado County approves Safe Routes to School Plan for South Lake Tahoe

With this approval, the Supervisors support plans to improve pedestrian and bicycle access and safety around Lake Tahoe schools through infrastructure upgrades, education and encouragement programs, and better enforcement of traffic laws.

While Sports Med teaches students how to help athletes after injuries occur, the strength and conditioning program will teach students how to train in a way to prevent injuries.
At Tuesday's Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board meeting, the board voted 4-1 to add the Strength & Conditioning center with accompanying classes at STHS.
Lake Tahoe Unified School teachers, administrators and staff get 4.5% raise

"This is very much appreciated," said Jody Dayberry, President of the South Tahoe Educators Association after the board voted to approve the 4.5 percent across the board raises. "Everyone is very happy."

Board members will be addressing the new state law concerning immunizations, new lights for the soccer field at South Tahoe Middle School, a conditioning room and new flooring at South Tahoe High, student privacy, finances, a 4.5% raise for employees, and discuss a tuition agreement with Douglas County Schools. The meeting begins at the District Office at 5:00 p.m. with closed session, with the public portion beginning about 6:00 p.m.

South Tahoe High plans to add Strength and Conditioning Center

The Sports Medicine program at the school was developed to help train students to assist injured students, and the new plan at the school is being designed to prevent injuries to the student athlete.

The next cast for the Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars has been announced, and the list contains ten South Lake Tahoe business owners, educators, police sergeant, and other well known locals.
Professional dancers will be working with the "celebrities" to teach them each a dance they'll bring to the MontBleu stage on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

EDC schools chief Jeremy Meyers resigns after 2nd DUI arrest
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/16/2015 - 7:20pmEl Dorado County schools superintendent Jeremy Meyers submitted his resignation to the school board Monday, and it was accepted after Meyers was arrested for two DUIs this year.
Meyers was arrested about 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 after crashing his pickup truck into a utility box on Green Valley Road and had a blood alcohol level of 0.19 percent, according to the California Highway Patrol.

South Lake Tahoe's Cork & More is not going to close at the end of the month as previously announced. The media coverage of their closing brought potential buyers out of the woodwork. Stay tuned to see if a sale is successful.
Superintendent to discuss student test score results at meeting

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) was an on-line assessment that measured their problem solving and critical thinking skills.
LTUSD Superintendent Dr. James Tarwater will present the results to the School Board Trustees during Tuesday's board meeting.

Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/14/2015 - 7:05pmAs promised during a recent Lake Tahoe Unified School Board meeting, the bleachers at South Tahoe High started to be dismantled the day after graduation.
Its been a four year project getting the design, bids and approval to build new bleachers to replace the 49 year old ones.
The new bleachers will have 917 seats, 12 wheelchair areas and a three-room coach/press box area.
The planned completion date is August 8.
LCAP 101: What is it and how you can participate?

They want parents to participate in the decision making and have invited everyone to the June 9 School Board meeting to encourage participation.

One can now navigate through the district site and land on each school's web page, visit departments, school programs, accountability report cards as well as community news and resources.
The site can also be translated into ten languages. Users simple select the arrow on the top right side.
