SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials say another 22 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the county, five in the Lake Tahoe region, seven in El Dorado Hills, four in Placerville, three in North County, one each in Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz, Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and Diamond Springs, El Dorado;. Of the new cases, two are under the age of 18, 16 aged 18-49, three aged 50-64, and one is 65 or older.

The remaining nine new cases are spread out: five in El Dorado Hills, two are in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, one in Placerville, and one in North South County. Of these 24, two are under the age of 18, 20 are aged 18-49, one aged 50-64 and one aged 65 and older.

There were 71 tests for the virus given since yesterday, and 47 negative tests were returned.

Of the new cases, five are aged 18-49, four aged 50-64 and one aged 65 or over, and eight of the new positive cases are female, two male.

The county was notified 124 test results came back as negative, and there have been 16 likely recoveries.

Fifteen of those are in the Lake Tahoe region, four in El Dorado Hills, two both Placerville and Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, and one in the North County. Three are under the age of 18, 14 aged 18-49, five aged 50-64 and two 65 and over.

This brings the total number of cases since the pandemic started to 579, 209 of those most likely still active.

City Council approves purchase of body cameras for South Lake Tahoe police officers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) will soon be getting body cameras after a unanimous decision by City Council during their meeting on Tuesday.

They approved spending up to $470,000 on 42 body cameras, 28 in-car cameras, and cloud based storage for both.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials are reporting 42 new cases of COVID-19 over the last three days, July 25-27. Of the new cases, 16 are in the Lake Tahoe region, 11 are in El Dorado Hills, eight in Cameron Park/Shingle Springs/Rescue, five in Placerville, and one each in the North County and Pollock Pines/Camino/Kyburz regions.

Of the 42 new cases, three are under the age of 18, 27 aged 18-49, nine aged 50-64 and three aged 65 and older. Twenty-two are female, 20 are male.

420 tests have been administered since Friday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County health officials have announced seven new confirmed cases, six in the Lake Tahoe region and one in El Dorado Hills. The totals only increased by five as two previously identified cases were transferred to other counties today. They were previously counted in the Cameron Park/Shingle Sperings area.

Of the new cases, one is under the age of 18, four are aged 18-49 and two aged 50-64. Six are female, one male.

An additional 84 tests were administered.

Groundbreaking at Lake Tahoe's new Special Events Center at Stateline

STATELINE, Nev. - It's been 23 years in the making, and today was the first physical step to bringing the new Tahoe South Event Center to existence. The fence is up around the parking lot at MontBleu Resort, and the first shovels of dirt were moved during a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There won't be fireworks shows around Lake Tahoe but there will be the 4th of July Truckee Tahoe Honor Flyover honoring our nation's independence and frontline healthcare workers. Warbirds will take to the sky, flying over Truckee and Lake Tahoe communities.

A contingent of historic plans will leave the Truckee airport at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday the 4th and fly counterclockwise around Lake Tahoe (schedule below), coming back into Truckee by 12:15 p.m. The planes will not be on display at any airport, just a great show in the air.

Fireworks banned in all Lake Tahoe area counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you were planning on setting off fireworks around Lake Tahoe this 4th of July, you can forget about it. They are illegal around the lake and in neighboring counties. A mild winter and a large amount of forest fuels put the area at a high risk of fire this summer, and fireworks could be devastating.

Without the official fireworks shows at the north and south ends of the lake, many fear people will resort to the fireworks bought at roadside stands and Indian reservations. While those are legal in the areas they are sold, they are not legal at Lake Tahoe.

“Science shows that face coverings and masks work,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “They are critical to keeping those who are around you safe, keeping businesses open, and restarting our economy.”

71-year-old Jackson man identified as victim in Kingsbury Grade motorcycle crash

STATELINE, Nev. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released more information on Thursday's fatal motorcycle crash on Kingsbury Grade/SR-207.

At approximately 2:23 p.m. on June 11, NHP troopers were dispatched to a fatal collision involving three motorcycles at the curve between Palisades Drive and Katherine Court in Stateline, Nevada.

One arrested on multiple charges after head-on collision in Lake Tahoe

6/9/20 update: A 23-year-old man from Garden Valley, California has been arrested on multiple charges after being involved in a two-car Collison on US50 near Skyland at Lake Tahoe on June 8.

At approximately 6:05 p.m, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash involving a Honda Civic and Toyota Tacoma.

The crash closed both the eastbound and westbound travel lanes of the highway for several hours as emergency crews aided the victims, transported the two drivers to the hospital via helicopter, and cleared the scene.

Drought conditions for Northern California and Northern Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This week's Drought Monitor shows much of the West in some level of drought. Lake Tahoe, the Sierra, and Western Nevada are all in a "moderate drought" stage with no end in the immediate future.

The 90-day outlook shows higher than average temperatures and lower than average precipitation, neither of which is good to break out of a drought.

Following below-average precipitation most of the winter, May storms delivered 181 percent of average in the Northern Sierra for this time of year, but the results aren't showing enough to remove the area from drought.

Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series canceled for 2020, Some new 2021 dates announced

STATELINE, Nev. – The 2020 Summer Concert Series at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys has been canceled in response to the public health emergency involving COVID-19. Many of the shows have been rescheduled or postponed, with targeted performance dates in the Summer of 2021. Exact dates to be announced at a later time.

New TAHOE housing program in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Saint Joseph Community Land Trust (SJCLT) has announced a new program that seeks to preserve existing housing stock for permanently affordable, full-time homes for Tahoe Basin employees and residents. It is called the TAHOE (Tahoe Affordable Home Ownership Enabling) program.

TAHOE has been created to do three things:

1. Provide assistance to income-qualified households searching for a home in the Tahoe Basin;
2. Enable SJCLT to purchase available homes to be made available to income-qualified Tahoe Basin employees or full-time residents;

South Shore 4th of July fireworks show canceled; TDVA aims for Labor Day show

STATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Douglas Visitors Authority (TDVA) voted unanimously Wednesday afternoon to cancel the 4th of July fireworks show on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe due to concerns around COVID-19 and large group gatherings.

Not all is lost though as TDVA is planning on a Labor Day Lights on the Lake show on Sunday, September 6, Labor Day Weekend. That show will depend on the coronavirus situation at the time and the TDVA board of directors has until July 23 to decide and not be held to any fees from Zambelli Fireworks, the producer of the show.

All events on City of South Lake Tahoe property postponed through at least mid-July

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Events on City property through at least July 14 have been postponed, including the 4th of July Parade.

As South Lake Tahoe starts to reopen with guidelines from California Governor Newsom for Phase 2, the directives toward events won't be addressed until future phases so the City took action during their meeting Tuesday.

Local boaters to be first allowed on Lake Tahoe; Future phases to allow out-of-area boats

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - Local boats will soon be able to get into Lake Tahoe, but boaters from out of the area will have to wait until COVID-19 reopening phases allow them.

On Friday the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) announced a phased approach to boating that discourages out-of-area visitation as part of state and local coordination on recreation guidelines for Lake Tahoe this season.

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County prepare to enter reopening stage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plans for the partial reopening of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are in the works, with the Board of Supervisors voting on a plan during a special meeting Friday, May 8, starting at 8:30 a.m.

During a Special City Council meeting Wednesday, the council put their support behind what the county decides so all can be on the same page and not confuse residents and visitors with separate rules.

Douglas County holding special meeting to discuss recovery and economic impacts

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners will be conducting a 1:00 p.m. special meeting on April 29, 2020, to discuss recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and economic impacts to local businesses in Douglas County. The county is actively seeking public comment from residents in regard to economic impacts on local business in Douglas County.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Pretty typical spring weather is expected this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The may be a wet end to the week in South Lake Tahoe with some cooler temperatures that will dip below normal Monday then warm again by mid-week. Low pressure, almost cutoff, will move into the region starting Thursday. This will increase chances for showers and a few thunderstorms Thursday into the weekend, mainly in the afternoon and early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

National map shows local areas perform well in social distancing efforts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County and Douglas County both scored well in the Unacast Social Distancing Scoreboard that rates states and counties across the United States in how well they are social distancing during the pandemic.

Overall, residents are abiding by the states' "stay at home" ordering and leaving home to work at essential jobs and for essential needs such as food.

Seven confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County has created a new dashboard for COVID-19 cases and it shows South Lake Tahoe leads all areas with confirmed cases.

There are 7 confirmed cases in the South Lake Tahoe region, 3 in Placerville, 4 in El Dorado Hills with the County's other 5 cases spread around the west slope.

797 people have been tested with 648 of those coming back negative for the virus. 130 are still pending.

Of the confirmed 19 cases:

1 - contact with a known case
6 - community-acquired
3 - cause under investigation

Sierra snowpack at 66% of April 1 average; Statewide it is 53% of average

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The precipitation of March did not do enough to boost the snowpack in the Sierra to high figures, but it did give surveyors better figures than the 47 percent of average one month ago. The manual measurement of the snowpack at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe showed the snow depth was 43.5 inches with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 16.5 inches. This is 66 percent of the April 1 average at that location southwest of Lake Tahoe.

Arrests leading to jail bookings are down in El Dorado County during the pandemic

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Arrests in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are down as a result of "Stay at Home" directives from the State, County, and City.

Though exact numbers are not yet available, a look at the daily arrest logs shows a large decrease. County-wide there were three arrests Sunday and five arrests on Monday, when one month ago there were 32 between the same two days of the month, a reduction of 75 percent.

TRPA approves 6,000 seat Tahoe South Event Center

STATELINE, Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) board today unanimously approved the Tahoe Douglas Visitor’s Authority Tahoe South Event Center planned for the parking lot area of Montbleu Casino Resort in Stateline. Edgewood Tahoe has donated the 13.3 acres at the corner of Lake Parkway and Highway 50 needed for the center.

Love of dance helping South Lake Tahoe youth cope with coronavirus seclusion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students enrolled at Marcia Sarosik Dance Studio in South Lake Tahoe cannot attend classes in person due to coronavirus restrictions, but they are still enjoying their love of dance with online dance classes.

Marcia Sarosik, better known as Ms. Marcia, has been teaching dance in the community for 41 years and this is the first time she's had to close the studio for an extended period. One of her former students, Chelsea Wightman, created a program for dancers to log onto to stay connected to the studio on James Avenue.

Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe through Wednesday morning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 25.

The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.

Slightly Stoopid announced for Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Slightly Stoopid is making a return to the 2020 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harveys Outdoor Arena on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Supporting the headliners are the popular alt/reggae-rock band Pepper, the American/Hawaiian reggae band from Orange County, Common Kings, and legendary Jamaican reggae singer (and former member of Black Uhuru) Don Carlos. The lineup is full of great reggae and reggae-fusion music.

Douglas County crash claims life of 70-year-old woman

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released the name of the 70-year-old woman killed in a Feb. 28 crash on US-395 south of Johnson Lane in Minden.

At 9:02 p.m., NHP troopers responded to the serious injury crash involving three people in two vehicles.

Mild week ahead in Lake Tahoe; Chance of snow once again in the weekend forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a brief winter storm, things are clearing up for Lake Tahoe in the week ahead with the high getting near 60 on Thursday. Just as the forecast over the last few weekends, a slight chance of snow returns on Friday nigh with dropping temperatures.

Sales tax revenues increase in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Quarterly reports on the sales tax received by the City of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County (EDC) were released this week. The quarter ending September 2019 shows the County's taxable sales in the unincorporated area grew by 4.3 percent when compared to the same period in 2018. In South Lake Tahoe, taxable sales grew by 6.0 percent. County-wide including both cities within its boundaries saw a 5.1 percent increase. In comparison, the Sacramento region was up 4.5 percent.

Almost half of the West in dry-drought conditions, including Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It isn't news to those who live in or frequent the Lake Tahoe region, the area has been experiencing very dry conditions this winter. Even though dry, it is not bad enough yet to put Tahoe into a drought category. The Drought Monitor released this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) places 45 percent of the country in the D0-D4 categories, or abnormally dry to exceptional drought. This is a big change from 2018-19. At that time Lake Tahoe had well above average snow, but 62.6 percent of the U.S. fell into the Do-D4 categories.

Sportsmanship, not rivalry, at South Tahoe High-Truckee High basketball game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has always been a strong rivalry between South Tahoe High and Truckee High but in just one minute that changed and what came out of their February 7th basketball game was an extreme case of sportsmanship, team and school spirit, and class.

New superintendent selected for Lake Tahoe Unified School District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a new school superintendent headed to South Lake Tahoe, but who that is won't be revealed to the public quite yet.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) trustees announced they are in negotiations with the chosen individual but it may be two weeks until the name is released. That person will also have to notify their current employer.

"The community will be very happy with who we selected," Board President Larry Reilly announced during Tuesday's board meeting.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a good start to the Sierra snowpack, big storms have almost been non-existent this winter. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports January 2020 was the fifth warmest on record in the US.

Fire hits South Lake Tahoe home twice in one night

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A home on Idaho Avenue in South Lake Tahoe had two fires overnight, resulting in damage to both the house and garage.

At 5:52 p.m. February 1, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) was called out to the home after what appears to be ashes placed in the garage caught on fire. The fire was knocked down and after being cleaned up, the fire crew left.

Super Bowl LIV, the 54th Super Bowl (the 50th modern-era National Football League championship game) will decide the champion for the NFL's 2019 and 100th season. New Year's Eve crash in Genoa turns into fatal investigation

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The 82-year-old man involved in a single-car collision in Genoa on December 31 has died from the injuries he sustained.

On New Year's Eve at approximately 6:49 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a call of a serious injury crash at the intersection of Mill Street and SR-205 in Genoa. The driver was transported to a Reno hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Old Dominion Tour stopping off on the South Shore with singer Andy Grammer

STATELINE, Nev. - Old Dominion fans are excited about the news released today about their 2020 tour....they will be at the Lake Tahoe at Harvey's Outdoor Arena on July 17. The pop-country group's U.S. leg of their We Are Old Dominion Tour is set to launch in May.

Their opening act in Lake Tahoe will be singer, songwriter Andy Grammer.

South Tahoe High students 'building' up their skills for the workforce

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Gone are the old high school woodshop prerequisite napkin holders and cutting boards. In their place are sheds and dog houses built to code, giving their creators valuable life and work skills for their futures.

Students in the South Tahoe High Woodshop 1 classes have been building dog houses, complete with insulation and roofs and sides built with techniques found in residential construction.
