It was a beautiful Thanksgiving Day in South Lake Tahoe, but things are about to change.

Another system is headed into the Lake Tahoe basin on Friday, bringing with it winds 20-30 mph with prolonged wind gusts from 30-55 mph. The wind advisory is in effect from 10:00 a.m. Friday to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

Waves are expected to be 2-4 feet with the highest ones on the north and east shores.

A quick storm will pass through Lake Tahoe beginning Tuesday evening, leaving the busy travel day of Wednesday fairly clear, though cold.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday with the heaviest snow expected between midnight and 5:00 a.m.

They are called for snow, 2"-4" at lake level, up to 8" near the crest by Wednesday morning.

Winds will increase Tuesday evening with them coming out of the southwest 10-20 mph with gusts 34-40 mph possible. Resulting waves on the lake will be 2-4'.

As we start a busy week of travel, three different storms headed to the Lake Tahoe Basin may impact driving conditions. People are driving, flying or taking a train to their Thanksgiving destinations and AAA expects more than 40 million people will drive 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving, the most since 2007.

Some of those travelers are headed to Lake Tahoe though hotel rooms and vacation rentals are still available.

It doesn’t take a wildland fire professional to see how fuel reduction can protect forests and communities.

It just takes a field trip to the site of the Emerald fire near the southwestern shores of Lake Tahoe.

Despite burning at the same time and under similar conditions to the disastrous Little Valley fire, the Emerald fire was much less destructive.

South Lake Tahoe didn't get much of anything from the last storm that passed through, but perhaps another storm coming into the Lake Tahoe basin Saturday might do a little better.

This next storm system is likely to produce weather impacts for the eastern Sierra and western Nevada this weekend according to the National Weather Service. Snow levels could drop to 6500-7000 ft.

Thursday Night - Partly cloudy, with a low around 24. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Friday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

1:30 pm update 11/15/26 - Many of the Lake Tahoe area ski resorts updated their opening dates today. Heavenly and Northstar will now open on Wednesday, November 23, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe dates have yet to be determined.

The lower elevations around Lake Tahoe have seen some snow over the past month, but nothing that stayed longer than a few hours, but the scene up on the slopes is much different.

Major changes are on their way to the Sierra, but Veterans Day starts off a nice weekend before the fast moving storm arrives on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says to expect snow levels rapidly falling along the cold front Wednesday, and possible into Thursday morning. Gusty winds are anticipated Tuesday into Wednesday. Snowfall amounts, and exact timing of storm will become more evident to forecasters as the storm gets closer.

Northern California has been drenched this month, giving the state the second wettest October on record since the Department of Water Resources began keeping track in 1921.

The Lake Tahoe Airport on the South Shore received 7.3 inches of rain in October, just over double of the monthly average of 3.54 inches. This water is helping to fill Lake Tahoe, which rose during the wet mid-October storm by over 3 inches, adding 11 billion gallons of water to the lake.

Two storms are headed to Lake Tahoe and each will bring rain, wind and a chance of snow.

The first storm will hit Thursday into Friday, with the other one right on its tail Saturday night into Sunday.

Storm one:

Hurricane Seymour off the coast of Mexico will bring heavy rainfall that will likely cause travel delays, especially for those driving across the Sierra. The peak period for heavy rain looks like it will be early Friday morning. Rain will spillover into Western Nevada as well, so be prepared with ponding water on the roadway.

South Lake Tahoe saw over six inches of rain during the series of three storms over the weekend, which did a lot more than bring a little snow to upper elevations.

The storm also send an estimated 11 billion gallons of water into Lake Tahoe according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. This is equivalent to the average total consumptive water use in a year from the Truckee River by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority. The average metered household in the Truckee Meadows uses about 121,000 gallons a year.

Mono County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has suspended the search for three men who have been missing in June Lake since their boat capsized on Saturday.

At about 10:00 a.m., a boat carrying five male passengers overtuned. Two of the men were able to swim to shore but the other men have not been found.

The men were vacationing at June Lake, and went out to fish Saturday morning. It is reported that they are from the town of Tehachapi, Calif.

Since Friday morning, rain has pummeled many areas of the Sierra Nevada. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, South Lake Tahoe had received 2.54" of rain, with more on the way. By Monday morning, a trace of new snow could be seen on the South Shore.

10/16/16 update 7:00PM - The Little Valley Fire is holding at 3,400 acres with 55 percent containment. 667 personnel remain on the incident. More rain forecast tonight which will aid in extinguishing the fire which started on Friday.

22 residences and 17-outbuildings were destroyed with 480 homes saved in the direct vicinity of the fire. Multiple structures remain under threat until 100-percent containment has been achieved.

10:00PM update - Current acreage burned in the Little Valley Fire has been revised at 3,400 acres with 20 percent containment this evening.

With heavy rain expected over the weekend and into next week, the City of South Lake Tahoe is reminding citizens that sand bags are available, free of charge.

During wet storms, residents may find themselves with flooding issues around their homes and garages.

Sand bags are available year-round at the City’s Streets and Snow Removal Yard located at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. Their operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
