Wildland Firefighter fundraiser at Red's July 29

An event to raise money for the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty will be held at Red's Old 395 on Friday, July 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation is holding the event which includes a raffle, wild beard contest, Smoky Bear and other fun. The donations will come from $1 raffle ticket purchases and beard contest entries.

County wants publc input on water use and storm water management

The El Dorado County Storm Water Team is surveying residents to better understand public awareness and concerns about water use and storm water management. The information from the survey will help the team develop a strategy to prioritize water quality protection efforts.

They would like citizens to complete the anonymous survey found here: https://www.survey monkey.com/r/RK6DHPY.

It should take no longer than ten minutes to complete and will be available through August 31, 2016.

Hwy 89 road project on West Shore switches to nighttime schedule

Now that the 4th of July holiday has passed, construction on the Caltrans Hwy 89 project along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe is now on an overnight schedule and will remain so for the next several weeks during the peak summer season, the department announced today.

Contractor Road and Highway Builders now works a 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. shift during the week and 10:00 p.m. Sunday to 6:00 a.m. Monday. That schedule is expected to continue until August 15. Completion of the project was originally targeted for the end of this season, but some work now will extend into 2017.

Property owners fighting weeds in the Tahoe Keys

In an effort to prevent the growth and spread of invasive weeds in the Tahoe Keys, residents are being proactive in the fight to keep their lagoons clean. The Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has submitted an updated Integrated Management Plan to the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board for approval.

TKPOA's plan is an adaptive, holistic one to greatly reduce aquatic invasive weeds in its lagoons.

Work on new parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins next week

Work on a new driveway and parking lot at Zephyr Cove Stables begins the week of May 1, 2016 when the first stage of the Zephyr Cove Stables Upgrade Project begins. Crews will be upgrading existing facilities, trails and utilities to meet current building code and accessibility standards and install Best Management Practices (BMPs) to improve water quality.

This is a joint project between the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), Zephyr Cove Resort and Douglas County.

Public can comment on Negative Impact Study for Meyers water quality project

The Meyers area will soon see a new erosion control project and water quality improvement projects in the neighborhood bordered by the Upper Truckee River on the west and Lake Tahoe Golf Course on the northwest, US Highway 501 State Route 89 on the south, and by Pioneer Trail on a small portion on the east.

The County will administer rights-of-way to install the improvements to the existing storm water conveyance system which is comprised of channels, basins, culverts, inlets, and infiltration system.

Rain and snow in South Lake Tahoe forecast

Outdoor Earth Day festivities in South Lake Tahoe has meant a return of winter in past years, and 2016 will be no different. Good news for the festival is the Friday night snow will make room for a sunny and warmer Saturday before the next system moves in.

A series of storms are headed to the Sierra, the first set to arrive Thursday night/Friday morning.

It is also closing weekend at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and they should have a fresh layer of powder for the skiers headed to the slopes. Both Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe are both closed for the season.

New roads, campsites and building relocation at Camp Richardson

Work on the second phase of the new campground and vehicle circulation plan at Camp Richardson Resort will continue beginning Monday, May 2, 2016 and last for approximately three months. Officially named the Camp Richardson Resort Campground and Vehicle Circulation Best Management Practices (BMPs) Retrofit, the result will allow the resort to meet current standards for water quality protection and increase universal accessibility to the area's activities.

Fast moving storm to bring rain and snow to Lake Tahoe; back in 60s by Sunday

A relatively weak Spring storm is headed to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it modest rain and snow amounts as it moves through the Sierra and western Nevada on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Snow levels will be down to around 4500 - 5500 feet. Although it will be cold enough for widespread snow showers, there won't be much in the way of snow totals with this storm though the West Slope should see more than the Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno. On Wednesday, the NWS in Sacramento forecast 4"-8" for the higher elevations.

NHP in Reno responds to over 75 calls during Monday's storm

The Nevada Highway Patrol had a busy day Monday as they dealt with numerous crashes and stuck cars after a "Spring Slider" dumped a foot of snow in many areas in and around Reno.

Between 4:00 a.m. and noon, NHP troopers responded to 25 crashes that did not require medical response, eight crashes that needed ambulances, and over 45 motorists that needed some sort of assist.

Reno getting brunt of storm moving through the Sierra Nevada

The "Spring Slider" moving across the Sierra Nevada this week has brought heavy snow to the Reno, Nev., area and widespread chain controls. South Lake Tahoe is currently seeing the sun and clear roads.

Easter Sunday brings with it pleasant temperatures along with a lake wind advisory from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Expect southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Waves on the lake may be 2 to 4 feet with the east and north shore getting the highest ones. Small boats will be prone to capsizing and should remain off the lake until conditions improve.

Things change Sunday night and Monday morning when a slider quickly moves through the Sierra and Western Nevada.

A 'Slider' storm is expected to move into the Reno/Lake Tahoe area Sunday night through Monday.

Snow accumulations are likely above 5500 feet and possible down to the lowest valleys including Reno and Carson City and could affect their morning commute on Monday.

Daytime high temperatures will drop around 20 degrees between Sunday and Monday, with freezing temperatures possible overnight on Sunday.

Latest storm adds needed water to Lake Tahoe and California

The latest storms to hit the Sierra and Lake Tahoe kept wter content in the snowpack close to average, with some areas of California going above average in the precipitation they've received.

Officials from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) will be making their last monthly snowpack measurement near Sierra-at-Tahoe next week, but electronic readings taken March 22, 2016 show the snowpack is at 92 percent of average.

Most of the ski resorts around the lake, while still below average snowpack, are experiencing the best measured snow in a few years.

Spring starts on Saturday, rain and snow return Sunday

High pressure off the California coast will be moving slowly inland, bringing continued dry weather and generally light winds with a steady warming trend through Saturday.

The warm temperatures and clear skies will move out and make way for cooler temperatures and gusty winds. The next chance for precipitation returns Sunday into Tuesday as a storm moves through northern California and northern Nevada.

Conservancy Board awards $7 million in Proposition 1 grants

On Thursday, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board awarded more than $7 million for seven watershed restoration and forest health projects around the lake. Thirteen different applicants submitted 32 grant requests totaling $30 million, but with just $13,950,000 to give out, it was a very competitive process.

The money comes from Proposition 1, the $7.545 billion water bond approved overwhelmingly by California voters in November 2014. It was divided around the state to agencies like the Conservancy for water supply infrastructure projects.

Chain controls going up on Lake Tahoe roads

The next way in a series of storms over the Sierra has made its way into Lake Tahoe tonight, with forecasters predicting up to two feet of snow at lake level by Monday morning.

Interstate 80 has had chain controls up for much of the afternoon, and Highway 50 has just put theirs up.

As of 8 p.m. Saturday, controls are now up on Highway 50 from Twin Bridges to Meyers, with chains required on all vehicles except 4WD with snow tires.

New storm headed to Lake Tahoe: One foot of snow possible at lake level

Could this be a "Miracle March?" With almost two feet of new snow added to ski resorts last weekend, and another two feet expected this weekend, signs are pointing to getting well above average on the Sierra snowpack totals. The precipitation is there, but all depends on the temperature.

The National Weather Service in Reno today said, "Higher confidence this afternoon with potent winter storm expected to arrive Saturday with rain, snow and wind this weekend into Monday morning."
