Ceremony to celebrate completion of new SR 89 realignment and bridge project in Tahoe City

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Monday, December 16 to celebrate the opening of the State Route 89 realignment, including the new Truckee River Bridge in Tahoe City.

Attendee parking will be located at the Tahoe City Transit Center along West Lake Blvd. The public should plan to arrive by 9:45 a.m. to park and walk to the ceremony location, which starts at 10:00 a.m. The bridge will be closed for the event.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Possible rain/snow on Tuesday and weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a break between storms with a quiet weather pattern in place over the next couple of days, though the potential for morning fog remains at the beginning of the week. A weak weather system could bring light snow showers to the mountains from late Tuesday into Wednesday with a return of another atmospheric river system with high snow levels that could arrive by Friday.

Winter Storm Warning in affect for Lake Tahoe until Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Winter Storm Watch has been ungraded to a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin, Truckee and Donner Pass until noon on Sunday.

Actress Anna Faris and family survive carbon monoxide issue at Lake Tahoe home

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The family of actress Anna Faris had a brush with danger in North Lake Tahoe during the Thanksgiving holiday. The group of 13 rented a vacation home in the 100 block of Tahoma Drive in Tahoe City. Two of them felt ill and went to the hospital where it was determined they were suffering from Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Tahoe Film Festival returns to the North Shore

The 5th annual Tahoe Film Fest presents an incredible selection of new feature films and documentaries on various topics, as well as important award-winning environmental films. Several filmmakers introduce their works. The event is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy almost thirty films and interact with other film aficionados.

All proceeds from the festival, which runs on the North Shore from December 5-8, go to support educational programs at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

Mixed bag of weather this week in South Lake Tahoe

New storm brewing for this weekend for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a Winter Weather Warning in place for Lake Tahoe until 4:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving, another new alert has been issued for the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Lake Tahoe from Saturday at 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Heavy snow with significant travel delays possible Saturday afternoon through early Monday morning.

A foot of snow blankets South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens and road controls in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is one word to describe Wednesday: SNOW! Winter made its appearance in the Lake Tahoe basin Tuesday and will continue this week as one storm exits and another stops by.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed for the day. The college will reopen at its normal time after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Monday, Dec. 2. The City of South Lake Tahoe offices are open.

Winter Weather Warning for Lake Tahoe: Up to 18" of snow forecast for lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to 4:00 p.m. Heavy snow is expected with total accumulations of 8-18 inches at lake level and 1-2 feet above 7000 feet. Localized totals near 3 feet are possible over the multi-day period along the Sierra Crest. Winds will be gusting as high as 60 mph.

The worst conditions will be late Tuesday through midday Wednesday.

No planned weekend traffic relief in Meyers this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Residents attending the El Dorado County Town Hall meeting in Meyers on Thursday didn't hear what they wanted to about the upcoming winter and any plans that could be put in place to alleviate traffic jams in neighborhoods.

As is the case with all meetings concerning traffic in Meyers, there were several audience members with ideas from instituting maximum vehicles allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin to turn restrictions and road closures during specific hours.

This is a cold storm and will lower snow levels to all valley floors by Tuesday night with accumulating snows possible.

Christmas tree permits go on sale Monday in Lake Tahoe - other forests already on sale

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will begin the sale of Christmas tree permits on Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Permits cost $10 each payable by cash, check or credit card (though they prefer the quicker transaction of cash).

There is a change to the policy this year - only one permit will be allowed per family or per address, instead of the previous two. They said by limiting permits to one per family, more will enjoy cutting down a tree this year.

Public gives input on proposed changes to USFS snowmobile/winter travel plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) revised their Forest Plan over 10 years ago, many wanted them to include changes to snowmobile and other winter travel access to public lands at the same time. With the amount of public comment and the recognized need to have its own plan, they separated the two.

In 2011, LTBMU started a collaborative group to develop a proposed action plan for Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle (OSV) use in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Expect delays on SR28 as new “Welcome to Nevada” monument is installed

Single lane closures will be in place on State Route 28 in Crystal Bay on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe on Thursday, Nov. 14 as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs a new “Welcome to Nevada” monument.

Single lane closures will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. near the intersection of SR28 and Stateline Road in Crystal Bay. Drivers should anticipate moderate travel delays as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate both directions of traffic through the work zone.

Mt. Rose lane closures as NDOT works on highway improvements

Single lane closures will take place on a section of the Mt. Rose Highway summit (State Route 431) Nov. 12-15 as part of continuing Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) roadway improvements.

Between 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Nov. 12 through Nov. 15, single lane closures with traffic flaggers alternating directions of travel will be in place on Mt. Rose Highway just below the Mt. Rose ski area. Motorists should anticipate minor travel delays.

Roadway signage is being enhanced to further focus driver attention on navigating the mountainous roadway turns.

Caltrans and partners officially open first of two roundabouts in Meyers

Caltrans addressed what they reported to be an increase of accidents at the intersection of US50 and SR89 with a $7.3 million roundabout in Meyers, and today there was a ribbon-cutting with local partners to officially open it up.

What used to be a T-intersection with one stop sign is now a three-leg roundabout with a bypass lane. Years of studies, planning, environmental reviews, and engineering led to this past summer's build by Q&D Construction.

STMS Maker Lab needs community votes to win national robot contest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Maker Lab at South Tahoe Middle School is a finalist to win ten new Sphero RVR Robots and it will take votes from the community to bring them to the school.

Fifteen schools were selected by SparkFun® Electronics to be finalists in their national contest to assist middle and high school STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) initiatives and education with the RVR (pronounced "Rover").

Single lane closures on Kingsbury Grade Tuesday-Wednesday

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be working on the Lake Tahoe side of Kingsbury Grade on October 29 and 30. Expect single-lane closures as crews fill roadway cracking.

Small sections of Kingsbury Grade will be reduced to one lane from approximately 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday from Meadow Drive to Tramway Drive. Motorists are advised to give extra travel time and to anticipate moderate travel delays as traffic flaggers and pilot cars alternate directions of travel. The road work schedule is subject to change.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has released the "Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle (OSV) Travel Management Project," and in that document are changes to snowmobile access in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

They have proposed to open OSV use (snowmobiles) to areas around the lake that have been restricted in the past and close up other areas. The plan still leaves about 50 percent of the lands managed by LTBMU open to OSV use.

Seasonal temperatures with wind and chance of rain in South Lake Tahoe

After pleasant weather conditions today, gusty winds and some fire weather, travel, and recreation concerns return Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Today will be characterized by generally light winds and average temperatures in South Lake Tahoe, with some sun. Expect this to change by Saturday, however, as a wave drops out of the Pacific Northwest bringing gusty winds to the region. So, if you have outdoor fall and Halloween decorations, today will be a good day to check that they are secured.

As weather and conditions permit, prescribed fire operations will take place this fall and winter around the Lake Tahoe Basin. This month, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and California State Parks are working on rescribed fire operations as they will continue as needed over the next several weeks.

Smoke can be seen on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe Monday, and it is coming from operations near Tyner Way and Toni Courts and above Jennifer Drive in creek drainage areas.

Man arrested for Felony Hit-and-Run in South Lake Tahoe fatal collision

10:00 a.m. Monday update: The man arrested in connection with the felony hit-and-run is a full-time student at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) and a member of their men's soccer team.

10/7 update: A 20-year-old college student went to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department at 12:30 a.m. this morning, telling them he believed he was involved in the fatal hit-and-run. Marlon Cruz, a member of the Lake Tahoe Community College men's soccer team, was arrested after an investigation by SLTPD and interview with Cruz. The vehicle used in the hit-and-run has been located. NDOT changing exit signs on I580 in Carson City

Beginning Oct. 6, exit numbers on the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway will change as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project to resurface and enhance the interstate.

The current exit numbers range from 38 to 42, and through the coming week will be replaced with new, lower exit numbers corresponding with roadway mileage as follows:

Fairview Drive - Exit 3
U.S. 50/Willian Street - Exit 5
College Parkway - Exit 6
Arrowhead Drive - Exit 7

This week at South Tahoe High School, students found their voice about climate change and the varsity volleyball team travels to archrival Truckee in a battle for the league’s top spot.

Last Friday, hundreds of students at STHS walked out of their classes in protest against climate change inaction. Some even marched down towards the Lakeview Commons and spoke in front of locals. Inspired by the strike, other students are coming together to find more effective ways of protest.

Prescribed burns to resume around Lake Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fall Prescribed Fire Program may begin as early as September 24, 2019, under the management of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies.

Weather and conditions permitting, California State Park crews may begin prescribed fire operations in Burton Creek State Park near Tahoe City and in a couple of weeks move to D.L. Bliss State Park near Tahoma.

Students of South Tahoe High School got a taste of fall this week, as the weather brought rain and wind. Homecoming Week planning began, students learned about the impact of social media, and sports teams prepared to travel this weekend.

Overnight closure of US 395 for cattle guard replacement

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Single lane closures will take place on U.S. 395 south of Gardnerville the evenings of Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) replaces a cattle guard across the highway.

Lanes close as NV Energy replaces underground vaults at Stateline

STATELINE, Nev. - NV Energy will start work on Highway 50 at Stateline on Wednesday morning to replace equipment in two underground electric vaults.

The work, including excavation and repaving, is estimated to be completed by October 11. The schedule is subject to change based on weather.

During this time, NV Energy will work closely with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) regarding road closures.

100th anniverary of historic military convoy heading through South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - 100 years ago, the US Army Motor Transport Corps convoy traveled along the brand new (and now famed and historic) Lincoln Highway from coast to coast. They covered over 3,000 miles from Washington, D.C. to Oakland, California on road, then ferried over to their end in San Francisco.

Now, in 2019, the Military Vehicle Preservation Association is will follow the original Lincoln Highway route as closely as possible during the 100th Anniversary Convoy across the United States, and South Lake Tahoe is on that route.

Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadwork for September 8-14

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Scheduled roadwork around the Lake Tahoe Basin is still in full swing before the winter hiatus.

For those wondering about the old Caltrans traffic camera at the Y: it is being replaced and when received there will be a lane closure coordinated for installation.

The camera at the new roundabout in Meyers can be rotated to analyze traffic needs and will not be aimed just at the roundabout for the time being.

Grinding and paving project in South Lake Tahoe to cause delays

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Caltrans grinding and paving project got underway Monday in South Lake Tahoe, causing traffic delays with travel reduced to one lane in each direction at the "Y" intersection.

Work got underway at 5:00 a.m. Monday at US50 and SR89. The roadway will be ground down and replaced with new asphalt.

For the duration of the paving work, the contractor is permitted to have around the clock lane reductions, weather permitting. The intersection operation is expected to be completed within a week.

Closure of Echo Summit may be closer to mid-October

9.6.19 Update: At this time Echo Summit will be closed for 14 days starting on October 18, 2019.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to a delay in receiving needed supplies, the Caltrans contractor working on the US 50 Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct project will be moving their expected full road closure date.

Caltrans today told the South Lake Tahoe City Council it is looking more like mid-October for their closing the artery between the lake and Sacramento for up to 14 days. They said the actual closure date is still a moving target.
