Longer days and warmer weather invite adventure. But even the most experienced explorer should prepare for unknowns when hitting the trail.

This checklist can help:

Buddy up. Adventuring with a partner is not only more fun, but it can be crucial in an emergency. Also, share your plan with another trusted person before venturing out, including where you are going and when you plan to return. Stick to your plan.

Know your limits. Choose activities that suit your physical condition. The pace should be comfortable for the slowest member of your group.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join the Lake Tahoe Historial Society on Tuesday, July 5 for another one of its weekly Tahoe History Talks on the Beach. Join Master Gardener and Raconteur David Long at the event at Lakeview Commons from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

What we eat can have a good story to tell. Many of the vegetables and fruits we eat, and pretty much take for granted, have interesting histories and backstories that are not well known.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The year was 1962, and Orly Larson and David Kramer enlisted in the Navy from their perspective hometowns. Two years later the men met when they were assigned to the USS Belknap DLG26, a brand new guided-missile destroyer.

The two shipmates were both Radarmen Second Class, specializing in the Naval Tactical Data Systems. They were both members of the original commissioning crew, also known as “plank owners."

Orly and David served together for two years on the ship, until the end of their enlistments, from 1964-66.

UPDATE 6:00 p.m.: All customers have had their power restored except for 20 in the Sawmill Road area. Liberty Utilities had been estimating all up by 6:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 4,500 Liberty Utilities customers in South Lake Tahoe are experiencing a power outage that occurred Sunday early in the afternoon.

Crews are working to restore power. The Liberty website estimates restoral of power around 4;13 p.m.

Many stores are closed due to lack of power so call ahead if going out.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following are calls that only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. There may be some missing calls due to sheriff's logs not being completed at the time of the story.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An unseasonable weather system that is expected to move through the Lake Tahoe region over the weekend bringing cool temperatures and wind gusts, has prompted the postponement of the drone light shows planned in celebration of Independence Day on July 3 in Kings Beach and July 4 in Tahoe City.

In response to the current and growing risk of wildfire, the Humboldt- Toiyabe National Forest will implement Stage I Fire Restrictions For the Santa Rosa, Mountain City-Ruby Mountains- Jarbridge, Austin-Tonopah, Bridgeport, and Carson City Ranger Districts effective July 2. 2022 at 12:00 p.m.

3:00PM Update: The previous report that there was one lane in each direction was incorrect. There is now alternating one-way traffic control. The remains of the big rig are being loaded up for removal.

1:30PM Update: There is now a single lane open in each direction on US-50 at Kyburz. Expect delays as crews clean up the scene.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After Tahoe Youth and Family Services (TYFS) received special federal funding in October 2021, Cheyenne Lane hit the ground running to provide much-needed housing and services to unaccompanied minors and homeless young adults ages 16-21.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Barton Rehabilitation Services has invested in new technology to help patients relearn to walk and achieve mobility goals. The Bioness Vector Elite Gait and Safety System is designed to improve treatment efficiency, reduce patient falls, and prevent clinician injuries. Utilizing the system, Barton Rehabilitation will continue to rehabilitate patients recovering from stroke and amputations, orthopedic, brain and spinal cord injuries, and other neurocognitive disabilities and return to daily activities in a safe manner.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is ensuring pets are as prepared as everyone else in case of an emergency, especially at the start of wildfire season. A generous grant from the Dave & Cheryl Duffield Foundation allowed HSTT to get pet “go bags” for emergency purposes, and there are still bags left in both South Lake Tahoe and Truckee. The bags are intended to be ready for “grab and go”, and will include almost everything your pet will need in case of an evacuation emergency.

CAMINO – Caltrans District 3 and the El Dorado County Department of Transportation are notifying the traveling public that a portion of Carson Road within the ongoing U.S. Highway 50 (US 50) Camino Safety Project will be closed in July for up to 12 days.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe is celebrating Independence Day with its July 4th parade along US-50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard between Ski Run Blvd. and Al Tahoe Blvd.

The parade gets underway at 10 a.m. with an honorary military flyover over Lakeview Commons, courtesy of the Nevada National Guard, 152nd Airlift Wing “High Rollers.”

The theme of the parade is honoring heroes. It will finish at Bijou Community Park on Al Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care for its first Wildlife Wednesday of the season on July 6. This week will be "Introduction to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and Ambassador Animals Meet & Greet."

LTWC team members will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A at Lake Tahoe Wildlife's Tahoe Fund Outdoor Learning Center on Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe. This all-ages event is free, and donations are appreciated (suggested donation: $10 for an individual or $25 for a family).

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Just as fans didn't think the field of celebrities at next week's American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe couldn't get any better, Nick Jonas has been added to those golfing.

Nick Jonas is a singer, songwriter, and actor, and will make his inaugural appearance at the ACC at Lake Tahoe, July 6-10, enhancing what is the most field elite field of sports and entertainment stars in the tournament’s 33-year history.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – A new and innovative NFT[1] charity auction will take place during this year’s American Century Championship sponsored by American Century Investments.

TRUCKEE – Caltrans is alerting motorists to expect travel delays and one-way traffic control on State Route 267 this week for maintenance work.

Caltrans structures maintenance crews will be conducting routine inspections of the bypass bridge between the Interstate 80 separation and Old Brockway Road/Soaring Way on Wednesday, June 29 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Work in the area also will include drainage cleaning. One-way traffic control will be in effect on SR-267 during the inspection work.

TRUCKEE, Calif. - The Truckee Air Show & Family Festival is back after the community fought to keep the popular event when it was facing a possible end. This year's return will be on Saturday, July 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and admission and parking are free.

Please join family and friends in celebrating the life of Elwyn “El” Hug. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 11, at 3 p.m. at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, 2733 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Following the service, El will be remembered at a reception filled with what he loved most – friends, food, and fun (and probably a few stories!).

The reception will begin at approximately 4 p.m. at the family’s home at 3560 Ralph Drive.

NV Energy started work on its Carson City to Glenbrook Transmission Line Rebuild Project on Monday, June 27 in the Spooner Summit and Voltaire Canyon area. During construction, the public may experience potential traffic delays primarily within the Spooner Summit area of U.S. Highway 50.

The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT), Clear Creek Trail, Spooner Summit Trailhead, and Spooner Summit South Day Use Area will remain open for public use.

RENO, Nev. - A Gardnerville, Nevada resident was sentenced Friday to five years of probation, six months of home confinement, and restitution in the amount of $49,079, for assault and interference with crew members during a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas.

Daniel A. Parkhurst, 41, pleaded guilty on February 22, 2022, to one count of interference with flight crew members and attendants, and one count of simple assault in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.
