Tree Ring Project unveiled in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first of six history tree rings was unveiled at South Lake Tahoe City Hall on Tuesday. The tree was estimated to be alive from 1844 to 2017, so dates important in the history of the area are identified on the rings of the tree. It is hanging on the wall in the lobby of the Lake Tahoe Airport for all to experience.
The Tree Ring Project is a joint effort between the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, Kenny Curtzwiler from K&K Services, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, and the City of South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Sierra Nevada has had a pounding this winter, so far, with several feet of snow, and atmospheric rivers spreading snow and rain throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin. While almost none of the storms on their own has been catastrophic or even record-breaking, the constant pounding has taken its toll, and area roads show it.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE and TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is expanding its “Pet Pantry” program, which helps owners keep their pets despite financial hardships or other barriers. HSTT launched the program during the recession of 2010, offering Truckee residents free pet food and supplies to maintain their pet’s care. When the South Lake Tahoe office opened in 2019, the agency expanded the program to that area.
Now, every Lake Tahoe resident is eligible.

In order to provide the funds necessary to help, the club fundraises. In the past, that was done through the annual Elegant Evening and silent auction, but COVID-19 paused large in-person events, so SITS has responded with three fun and new ways to help those in the community!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Despite Mother Nature bringing an additional foot of fresh snow to the Lake Tahoe area on Monday, January 16, Bread & Broth still served a hot meal to the 41 dinner guests who braved the cold and the snowy roads. Due to the road conditions and blocked driveways, only a few cooks could get to St. Theresa’s Grace Hall, so hot pizza from Pizza Hut, a green salad, and broccoli were served in lieu of the planned menu.

Special Olympics USA has announced it will send a 201-member delegation to represent the United States at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, being held June 17-25, 2023. Brandy Goodson of Fallon, Nev., will represent Special Olympics Nevada, competing in athletics. She competes for the organization’s program in Fernley, Nev.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - American Legion Post 795'recently made a food donation to the South Tahoe High School Food Pantry.
In the photo above, American Legion Post 795 Auxiliary Secretary Sandy McKnight and Rob Canny of South Tahoe High School and part-time bartender at Post 795, joined forces this past fall.
Rob had informed the Auxiliary of food-insecure students at the high school. Since then, four carloads of food have been gathered by the Auxiliary and delivered by Rob for STHS. The Auxiliary also supports the Food Pantry at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) members may continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe as conditions and weather allow. The Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Incline Village and the USDA Forest Service may continue operations near Baldwin Beach. Smoke will be present. City of South Lake Tahoe seeks one-year franchise agreement with Liberty Utilities

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe wants to explore options for who will provide electric utility services to the community, including the feasibility of municipalization of electrical generation distribution.
During its January 10 meeting, the City Council rejected Liberty Utilities' request for a 25-year franchise agreement, and instead offered one-year as staff examines all possibilities for services in a first reading. At its January 24 meeting, the Council has the approval of the one-year plan on the consent agenda.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the number of power outages experienced at Lake Tahoe this winter, the conversation has once again been centered on the undergrounding of utilities.
Liberty Utilities is the provider of electricity on the California side of Lake Tahoe except for a small area near Truckee that is serviced by NV Energy, the carrier for the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Liberty gets its power from NV Energy.

Hip osteoarthritis is often the cause of hip pain as we age. Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” arthritis, refers to the breakdown or degeneration of the cartilage that coats and protects the bone surfaces where there is movement in a joint. Unfortunately, our body does not repair or regenerate new cartilage when it becomes injured and wears down. The loss of the protective joint cartilage leads to friction between bone surfaces which can cause joint pain and stiffness.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold front will bring gusty winds from the east, 80-120 mph along the Sierra and Carson Range ridges from Sunday to Monday morning. Starting overnight, winds will increase over the Sierra ridgetops.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in place from 1 p.m. Sunday to 4 a.m. Monday. Expect winds from the east, 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph at lake level with waves 1 to 3 feet.

The recipients of the "Young Women of Distinction" award were recognized for their exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and community service. They were nominated by teachers and counselors at their schools.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cristi Creegan declared today, January 20, as Miss Marcia Day in honor of Marcia Sarosik, founder of Lake Tahoe’s Shining Stars.
Marcia was dedicated to the youth of South Lake Tahoe for decades and represented the spirit of the South Lake Tahoe community. The mayor said it was essential for the City to commemorate her life on what would have been her 67th birthday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that the historically active weather period at Lake Tahoe has passed, people can get out and about, and finish shoveling all that snow. Expect cold and tranquil weather conditions.
Sunny days and a lack of storms, along with plentiful snow at resorts, expect possible traffic this weekend around Lake Tahoe. Temperatures will remain below average with light easterly winds in place.
Snow removal teams will continue work on area roads and no street parking is allowed during snow conditions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The AARP Tax-Aide Foundation is bringing free tax return preparation to the South Lake Tahoe community starting February 23. Volunteers will be at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center located at 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
The preparers will be there Each Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting February 23, and Saturdays starting February 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
Taxpayers should bring last year’s return, all 2022 tax documents, a photo ID, and social security cards for all persons listed on the return. For more

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Popular Electronic Dance Music (EDM) star Illenium will be making his way to Lake Tahoe this summer for a June 4 concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys at 5:30 p.m.
Illenium, the winner of the 2022 Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Album award and a nominee for a grammy in 2021, is a songwriter, DJ, and record producer. The 32-year-old's real name is Nicholas Daniel Miller.

1/20 UPDATE: The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) said the avalanche occurred in El Dorado County in an area known as Rattlesnake, located just outside the resort boundary near the power lines above High Meadows, below Ridge Run and Sky Express.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tube Tahoe is hosting days on the snow this winter for families with special needs children. On January 22, February 12, and March 19, Tube Tahoe will have two specially designed lanes set up.
The locally owned tubing hill in Meyers is located at 3021 US-50.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the families can enjoy time on tubes, for free.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) is working on a countywide Comprehensive Child Abuse Prevention Plan and they are seeking help from the public on what child abuse prevention looks like in South Lake Tahoe.
It will be held on Saturday, January 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library. Light snacks will be provided.
This is one session in a series of community listening sessions the CAPC is hosting to seek the feedback of community members on the proposed plan.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After weeks of delayed mail and long hours at the main post office in South Lake Tahoe, change is in the air.
Extra workers from Sacramento have been brought in and the front counter will have extended hours for mail pick-up on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week to accommodate customers. A new postmaster to replace the void left through retirement is also coming on board.

We’ve weathered an intense series of storms; a seemingly endless cycle of too much wind, rain, and snow.
And while winter is known as a tough time of year, this year has felt especially challenging. From power outages to snow cancellations to days of rain and flooding to higher food prices and service delays … it’s okay to say, things feel hard right now. They are hard.
It’s normal to feel tired and overwhelmed. It’s normal to feel like you can’t fathom another day of snow removal. It’s normal to search Zillow houses in Maui and dream about a warmer place to live.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - As a parade of winter storms continues to batter the Tahoe region, Take Care Tahoe and local fire departments are promoting a campaign to encourage community members to keep fire hydrants clear of snow and debris in an effort to help fire personnel should an emergency occur.
With over 4,000 fire hydrants in the Tahoe Basin, Take Care Tahoe asks community members to Adopt-A-Hydrant in their neighborhood by clearing a three-foot radius on every side of the hydrant and to the road’s edge every time it snows.
Prescribed fire operations scheduled to resume this week at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If conditions are favorable, the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will resume prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Beginning tomorrow, the Nevada Division of Forestry is scheduled to burn hand piles near Spooner Lake and the USDA Forest Service is scheduled to burn a large machine pile this Friday near Baldwin Beach. GARDNERVILLE, Nev. - Rebecca Robidart, RN has received the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award for Extraordinary Nursing at Carson Valley Medical Center (CVMC).
Rebecca, a five-year nursing veteran, was nominated by a grateful patient who says, “She is the sweetest, most caring nurse I have ever dealt with.”
Nevada author releases free children’s book

Indie author and illustrator, Shelby deBraga, has released a free children’s eBook, Bennie the Bear - Friends of the Forest. deBraga is launching the book for free until Jan. 20, to share with young adventurers ages 2-8 years old and their nature-loving family members.
