Winter Weather Advisory for Christmas Eve at Lake Tahoe; Clear and sunny Christmas Day

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Christmas Eve for the Greater Lake Tahoe area, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are calling for snow above 6500 feet with accumulations of 2 to 6 inches west of Highway 89 with up to 12 inches along the highest peaks. Lake Level could see up to 2 inches though much of this storm will result in rain at the lake. Ridge winds could be gusting as high as 90 mph. Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph with wave heights between 1 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.

After 8-game winning streak, Knight Monsters drop two to Utah

Well, the fun had to stop sometime. And that fun eight-game winning streak came to an end in the Maverik Center against the Utah Grizzlies.

On Friday: Despite mounting a late comeback, the Tahoe Knight Monsters fell for the first time in the month of December, losing 6-3 to the Utah Grizzlies at the Maverik Center.

It was their first loss since November 30 against the Idaho Steelheads, and the defeat broke Tahoe’s eight-game winning streak.

Marcella Foundation looking for Reading Pal volunteers in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Marcella Foundation is piloting a new Reading Pals Program at Tahoe Valley Elementary starting January 21, 2024, and they're looking for 8-10 volunteers to help tutor children and share the love and power of learning!

Bread & Broth opened during the holidays, other food distributions may change

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are many food distribution sites to help those in South Lake Tahoe, but the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays will alter some operating hours.

Those looking to fill food needs should take note that Christmas Cheer is closed for the next two weeks - Dec. 24/25 and Dec. 31/Jan. 1. They will resume operations on Tuesday, January 7 (their normal days of operations are Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

Phoenix Food Pantry will be closed on Christmas Day and they may be closed on January 1 (they are waiting to see if volunteers are available that day).

Forest Service hosts special holiday readings for South Lake Tahoe students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In celebration of the holiday season, the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) proudly hosted two holiday book readings for the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe.

Conservation Education and Fire Prevention staff, along with the Tallac Hotshots, had the amazing opportunity to present a holiday book reading complemented by crafts and activities for Boys and Girls Club students at Bijou Community and Meyers Elementary schools.

Active Christmas weather week ahead for Lake Tahoe; Wind advisory to start things off

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a chance of a white Christmas, though chances for a wet Christmas at most elevations around Lake Tahoe is a better possibility.

Before Christmas, there are quick-moving storms this weekend that will bring stronger winds on Saturday, with light rain and high-elevation snow showers. A Wind Advisory is in place for Saturday, December 21 from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. for communities around Lake Tahoe. Expect winds from the south to southwest, 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Wave heights of 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.

Wreaths Across America ceremony held in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Last Saturday’s snowstorm couldn’t keep members of Lake Tahoe Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), from hosting the Wreaths Across America Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to “Remember" those who have served and are serving our nation and community; “Honor” them for their service; and “Teach” younger generations about the sacrifices made to keep our nation free.

TTD expands US50 route for New Year's Eve and other big events

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is expanding its popular Route 50 Express Service to include several high-profile events at the Tahoe Blue Event Center. In addition to New Year’s Eve festivities at Stateline and Tahoe Knight Monsters hockey games on December 27-29, 2024, and January 24-26, 2025, the service will also support two marquee 2025 events: the Lake Tahoe Reggae Winter Festival on February 15-16, 2025 and John Summit: Experts Only show on February 21-22, 2025.

Two Knight Monster players called up to Henderson Silver Knights

STATELINE, Nev. – The Tahoe Knight Monsters, proud ECHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights and the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights announced today that forwards Simon Pinard and Jett Jones have been recalled back to Henderson.

Pinard, 23, played three games with the Silver Knights earlier this season and was reassigned back to Tahoe on November 29. In the 10 games with the Knight Monsters, he scored six goals and added nine assists.

He had the third most goals in the ECHL at 14, and also scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Allen Americans on December 3.

South Lake Tahoe Girl Scout Troop 33 spreads cheer at Tahoe Senior Plaza

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Members of Girl Scout Troop 33 in South Lake Tahoe have made the holidays a bit brighter for the residents of Tahoe Senior Plaza.

On December 12, Troop 33 went to the residential facility to sing carols, deliver homemade cards and angels, and spend time with the residents.

They had a lovely time, though reports on still out on who enjoyed it most!
One resident even brought out her own Girl Scout pins from 1933.

Former South Lake Tahoe man charged in cryptocurrency investment scheme

A federal grand jury returned a 12-count indictment against Daniel Chartraw, 51, formerly of South Lake Tahoe, charging him with wire fraud, United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced. The indictment was unsealed this week after Chartraw’s arrest.

Knight Monsters hold on to win Thriller in Utah

No one said that winning eight in a row was going to be easy.

The Tahoe Knight Monsters were pushed to the limit on Wednesday night in Utah, but ultimately prevailed 7-6 in overtime. They weathered two furious Grizzlies comebacks and Brennan Kapcheck scored the game-winner in the extra frame.

The first period played out like the majority of the previous three games against Utah, with Tahoe scoring four goals. Jake McGrew hit the back of the net twice, while Sloan Stanick and Jett Jones also struck to make it 4-0 after 20 minutes.

Then the second period happened.

Join the 3rd annual Adopt-A-Hydrant campaign: Help keep our community safe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) are joining forces for the third annual Adopt-A-Hydrant campaign, which encourages residents to keep the community safe by adopting a fire hydrant this winter.

A cleared hydrant can save firefighters precious minutes in the event of a structure fire. While STPUD and SLTFR clear some priority hydrants on main roads and near critical infrastructure, we need the community's help to ensure the numerous hydrants throughout neighborhoods are accessible after each storm.

TRPA Board selects Hayley Williamson as Chair

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - During its meeting Wednesday, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board elected Hayley Williamson as its new board chair for a two-year term. Williamson replaces Placer County Supervisor Cindy Gustafson who served as chair of the bi-state governing body for more than two years and who will remain on the board as one of six local government appointees.

Williamson, the Nevada at-large board member, also serves as chair of the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, a seat to which she was first appointed in 2020.

New members sworn in for LTUSD school board; Kemper selected as president

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two new school board members and one returning member were sworn in during the Lake Tahoe Unified School District's (LTUSD) organizational meeting on December 13.

Robert Anderson, Ellen Camacho, and Valerie Mansfield each won their seats in the November election. They join newly appointed Board President Lauri Kemper and Clerk of the Board Jon Hetherton. Mansfield, a past board president, was sworn in for her second term.

Barton Health earns three top designations for maternity care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health recently earned top designations for its commitment to high-quality maternity care. The three accolades received include the Baby-Friendly designation from Baby-Friendly USA as well as U.S. News & World Report’s High Performer rating and Maternity Care Access Hospital designation.

Of the 817 hospitals evaluated by U.S. News & World Report, Barton is one of only 75 hospitals to earn both the Maternity Access Hospital designation and a High Performer rating. This places Barton Health in the top ten percent of hospitals for maternity care.

Carnelian Bay man pleads guilty to child exploitation charges

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Placer County man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to child exploitation charges. Randy Anger, 57, of Carnelian Bay, pleaded guilty to distribution and receipt of child pornography, United States Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.

GBI receives grant funding for Crystal Basin Ecological Restoration Project

RENO, Nev. — The Great Basin Institute (GBI) has been awarded a grant from CAL FIRE’s Forest Health Regional Grant Program to aid in implementing the Crystal Basin Ecological Restoration Project. Located within the Eldorado National Forest, north of Highway 50, this initiative spans 85,000 acres and aims to reduce wildfire risks, improve forest health, and safeguard critical resources. In collaboration with the Healthy Eldorado Landscape Partnership (HELP), GBI will implement proven forest resilience practices to ensure long-term ecological health and fire risk reduction.

Review: Stunning soloists bring the house down at Messiah performance

Hello and Happy Holidays! I'm delighted to write a review on this past Sunday's performance of Messiah by the newly formed Tahoe-Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus, conducted by James Rawie. This was the 19th year that Messiah has been performed in South Lake Tahoe. 132 people attended this performance at Mountain House Church, a new beautiful, and warm venue. James' lovely wife Nancy always opens their shows with a welcoming smile and some interesting background information that puts the audience at ease.

DCSO releases names of those involved in what investigators say was murder-attempted suicide

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has identified the two individuals involved in the shooting on Dennis Street on Monday. They have been identified as Kathy Jean Weiland, 63, and Gregory Raymond Ward, 63.

Weiland was pronounced dead at the scene and Ward is being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. This is an active homicide investigation.

DCSO investigators say it appears that Ward shot Weiland and then shot himself attempting to commit suicide.

It’s time to bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and hit the road to enjoy South Lake Tahoe’s most festive holiday displays! The call went out to locals to have them submit their addresses so the public could go out and enjoy their lights from December 18 through Christmas, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

CHiPs for Kids 2024 a huge success - over 1,000 toys for kids in Alpine and El Dorado counties

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) office in South Lake Tahoe has resembled the North Pole lately with all of the toys they have been collecting for local children in need.

The toys are part of the CHIPS for Kids program where CHP collects toys during the holidays to distribute to organizations that help children and families.

Case closed against Lake Tahoe businessman as allegations dropped

PR Entertainment and Bass Camp Festival President Paul Reder has been in a battle over the past four months, one that he never imagined having to face. On August 9, 2024, a former employee and person he says he tried to help filed a civil case against Reder, his company, and some members of his staff. That person, known in court as "John Doe," alleged Reder sex trafficked him as a minor and used his financial position to exploit the individual years into adulthood in incidents between 2012-2016.

Tahoe Conservancy awards $601,700 to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy has awarded a $601,700 grant to the North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) for three years of work on programs to help reduce wildfire risk for north and west shore communities and their surrounding forests.

North Tahoe Chamber accepting applications for 2025 event funding

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The North Tahoe Chamber is now accepting applications for grant sponsorship funding for events scheduled to take place in North Lake Tahoe in 2025. Funding for the grants is generated by the North Lake Tahoe Tourism Business Improvement District (NLT-TBID) and is used to support events that promote community vitality, environmental stewardship, and economic health in the region.

Lake Tahoe prescribed burning to continue this week, weather and conditions permitting

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev, - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) fall Prescribed Fire Program continues this week around Lake Tahoe. If conditions improve, the Carson City Fire Department, North Lake Tahoe, North Tahoe, and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, and the California Tahoe Conservancy will continue burning piles through Friday, Dec. 20, 2024. Smoke will be present. Then, prescribed burning may pause during the holidays and resume in January 2025.

Knight Monsters win seventh in a row by crushing Utah

STATELINE, Nev. – By the end, it wasn’t even close. The Tahoe Knight Monsters dominated the Utah Grizzlies at home for the third straight game, winning 7-3 to secure their seventh victory in a row and their first three-game sweep in franchise history.

Things started quiet in the first period, with neither team able to sustain an offensive foothold in the first ten minutes of play. But that all changed in the next four minutes, as Sloan Stanick, Simon Pinard, and Jett Jones all scored in quick succession to make it 3-0.

And they were just getting started.

Congratulations to all. There were 22 adult entries and 12 youth entries, the talent was next-level.

Winter Weather Advisory issued for Lake Tahoe Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area including Truckee, Markleeville, Tahoe City, and South Lake Tahoe. The advisory is for Monday, December 16 from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Expect wet snow with snow accumulations up to 6 inches west of SR 89 with up to an inch at lake level. Ridge winds gusting as high as 80 mph. Southwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph with wave heights between 1 and 3 feet on Lake Tahoe.

After the quick storm leaves, highs will get into the 50s by Wednesday.

Fifty-five years ago this month, a unique interstate compact between the states of California and Nevada became law, creating the nation’s first bi-state environmental planning agency. I have had the honor of serving on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board for more than four years and as Board Chair for the last two.

Kathi Jensen takes oath of office as County Board of Education Trustee with two new trustees

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - At the December 13 regular meeting of the El Dorado County Board of Education, Rachel Librach and Ken Futernick took the oath of office to become the new trustees for Area 1 and Area 3. Kathi Jensen took the oath of office as a returning trustee for Area 5.

Librach will represent Area 1, which includes portions of Buckeye, Latrobe, El Dorado Union High, and Rescue.

“I am very much looking forward to giving back to my community and working with parents, students, and faculty to maintain our high-quality schools and learning environments,” said Librach.

Six "fake electors" charged again with a felony in Nevada

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford announced this week that the Office of the Attorney General has filed charges in the Carson City Justice Court related to the 2020 “fake electors” case. The six Nevadans who falsely represented themselves as presidential electors in the aftermath of the 2020 election have been charged with Uttering a Forged Instrument, a category D felony.

The six "fake electors" had attempted to award Nevada’s six electoral college votes to former President Donald Trump despite his clear loss to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.

David "Jake" Burns ~ 1948 - 2024

David "Jake" Burns, 75, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in Oceanside, California surrounded by his wife Barbara, and four children. Jake was born December 26, 1948, on the island of Guam. As the oldest of seven siblings in a Marine Corps family, he moved to Virginia, Ohio, and San Diego before settling in Orange, California. He graduated from Villa Park High School and went on to college at UC Riverside and later Loyola Law School.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has canceled its second night of the Festival of Lights due to inclement weather tonight, but the Lake Tahoe Historical Society is going forward with its holiday celebration on Saturday, December 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Santa Claus will be at the historic Osgood Toll House, a great place to share wish lists and take photos. The decorated log cabin and museum are open for free tours.

Enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies, and grab some mistletoe from the Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra club!
