EDSO arrests boyfriend of Tina Humlick for her murder

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has arrested a Placerville man for the murder of his girlfriend, 36-year-old Cristina "Tina" Humlick, a former South Lake Tahoe resident and 2005 graduate of South Tahoe High.
EDSO deputies responded to a call of a stabbing on October 5 at 6:34 p.m. on Prado Vista Court, Placerville. There they found Humlick deceased. At a neighboring residence they located a man who was suffering from traumatic wounds. The male, 43-year-old Michael Thompson, was transported to an area hospital.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Ice Arena After School Program is back. All sessions are FREE for all kids enrolled in elementary schools throughout the Lake Tahoe Unified School District from 1:45 p.m. - 3 p.m.
The informal sessions began this week and will continue on Wednesdays throughout the school year. Skate helpers and helmets are distributed on a first come, first come basis, and all participants will need to complete an online, or in-person waiver in order to participate.
The ice arena is located at 176 Rufus Allen Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

A partial solar eclipse should be visible from the Lake Tahoe Basin this Saturday, October 14. The peak of the eclipse will occur at 9:21 a.m. from Tahoe and will appear as 85 percent of a total eclipse. Unfortunately, there is a chance that cloud cover will interrupt a clear view of the eclipse. At this time the forecast at 9 a.m. is "mostly cloudy" and 46 degrees.

This month the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) is sharing facts and information to educate the community about fentanyl and counterfeit pills. Fake pills or counterfeit prescription pills are purposely made to resemble legitimate medicines but instead are made of illicit fentanyl or an illicit fentanyl analog.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - South Lake Tahoe saw tax receipts during the second quarter (Q2), from April through June, were 2.5 percent below the second sales period in 2022. Excluding reporting aberrations, actual sales were down 5.1 percent, according to the City of South Lake Tahoe Director of Finance Olga Tikhomirova.
El Dorado County as a whole was down 4.9 percent for Q2, the state down 2.9 percent, and Sacramento region was down 2.2 percent.

Poisonous mushrooms causing illness at Lake Tahoe

There’s a mushroom sprouting in the Lake Tahoe Basin that’s poisonous and may cause health issues for both humans and pets.
The Amanita muscaria mushroom is red with white spots and white gills, and eating it can cause gastrointestinal and possibly neurological issues. It is attractive to children because of its bright colors. It also resembles mushrooms in Super Mario video games and Smurf cartoon shows. Cases of accidental exposure in children have already been reported at Lake Tahoe.
Barton Health is alerting the community after seeing some cases in the Emergency Department.
Tahoe grading and digging season coming to a close

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is reminding residents and contractors that the annual grading and digging season for permitted projects will end on Sunday, October 15, after which all construction sites must be winterized to protect Lake Tahoe’s famed water clarity. The annual grading season runs from May 1 to October 15.

California State Parks is scheduled to continue understory burning through Oct. 20, 2023, in Burton Creek and Sugar Pine Point state parks and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit may continue burning piles on Angora Ridge near Fallen Leaf Lake and on Echo Summit near Echo Lakes through Oct. 13. Smoke will be present.
2017 sexual assault suspect found in Mexico, extradited to Douglas County with $1,000,000 bail

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In February 2017, a man by the name of Ricardo Serrano-Perez was identified as a suspect in the sexual assault of a minor in Douglas County, Nev. During the investigation, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) felt there was strong enough evidence to arrest Serrano-Perez as a suspect. He fled to Mexico. Between 2017 and 2023, legal efforts were made by the Douglas County District Attorney's office to extradite the suspect from Mexico back to Nevada.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Michael K. Johnson was appointed to fill the position of Justice of the Peace for the Tahoe Township during the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on October 5. Johnson will be filling the seat vacated by the retiring Judge Richard Glasson.
Johnson joined Richard Gardner and Cynthia Mohiuddin in interviewing for the position that will be through Glasson's original term, January 5, 2025.

Mr. Robison will explain how Mark Twain wound up in Virginia City, and on occasion in the Lake Tahoe basin. He will also share his discovery of a vast collection of antique 1860s types from the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City where Mark Twain was a reporter and city editor during the early silver discoveries of the Comstock Lode.

Forest Service comment period opens on e-bike policy changes for Lake Tahoe trails

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - With the popularity of electric bikes, or e-bikes, growing around Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the USFS (LTBMU) has proposed an update to its current regulations on trails around the lake. This planned move is to offer increased potential for recreational experiences on National Forest lands. They have opened a 30-day public comment period for the newly released Basin Wide Trail Analysis, which includes constructing 25 miles of new multi-use trail and opening 106 miles of existing trail around the basin to class-1 e-bikes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are 70 more students currently enrolled in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) than originally expected. During their budgeting process for the 23/24 budget, 3,551 students had been projected by the District and they now have 3,621.
Carol Gillespie ~ 1939 - 2023

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Carol Gillespie, on August 22, 2023. Born on December 17, 1939, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, Carol will be remembered for her joyful, caring, and generous heart and will be missed by all who knew her.
Carol was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, John Gillespie on December 15, 2022, her daughter, Anita Goodnow-Cabral in 1985, and her son, Bruce

Veterans TOT grant cycle open for round two of funding

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Nonprofits working with veterans are eligible to apply for grants during the month of October through a partnership with El Dorado Community Foundation and El Dorado County. The funds are from the County's Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT).
Grant requests of up to $10,000 will be considered by organizations that did NOT receive funding during the first cycle of this grant in August 2023.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department receives over $98K TO reduce alcohol-related harm

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department has been awarded a $98,136 grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to reduce alcohol-related harm in the community.
The grant is one of nearly fifty awarded in California to local law enforcement agencies through ABC’s Alcohol Policing Partnership (APP) program.
These grants strengthen local law enforcement efforts by combining theirs with ABC agents who have expertise in alcoholic beverage laws to help reduce alcohol-related harm within their community.

In August, Bread & Broth (B&B) was awarded a Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation Grant designed to provide financial resources to continue the organization’s efforts to respond to the issue of food insecurity in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community. The awarded $15,000 grant will support two of the organization’s programs, the B&B 4 Kids Weekend Food Bag program and the “Green Goal” project. Since Bread & Broth is an all-volunteer organization, all grant monies will be used to purchase food for program recipients.

Honda is in the middle of a complete relaunch, with nearly every single mainstream model being refreshed in the past two years now. First came the Civic, setting the stage for a new design direction, followed by the Accord, HR-V, CR-V, and now the big Pilot, Honda’s flagship vehicle for the brand (unless you count the NSX, badged as a Honda in other countries). I loved the new Civic and Accord, so I had big hopes for the Pilot, and what I found subverted expectations in both good and bad ways.
Surprise Douglas School Board vote - Superintendent Lewis stays on the job

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In a very surprising turn of events during Friday's special Douglas County School District (DCSD) trustee board meeting, a motion to accept Superintendent Keith Lewis's resignation failed by a vote of 3-4.
Trustee Doug Englekirk from the Tahoe Township, who is the board vice-president, broke away from the three newer board members Susan Jansen, David Burns, and Kathrine Dickerson, and voted on the side of the more seasoned board members, Linda Gilkerson, Carey Kangas, and Tony Magnotta.
Woman killed in El Dorado County homicide was South Lake Tahoe native, STHS grad

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On Thursday, October 5 at 6:34 p.m., the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) responded to Prado Vista Lane in Placerville for a report of a stabbing that had occurred. When deputies arrived, they located a female who was deceased in a residence.
At a neighboring residence, a male was located suffering from traumatic wounds. The male was transported to an area hospital.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Transportation District has announced they are extending their Route 50 to provide extra bus service to help with expected crowds at the Tahoe Blue Event Center this fall.
If you are planning on attending the shows this weekend you are encouraged to take advantage of the free, expanded service. The bus will start at the Y at the times below, and make normal stops along US50/Lake Tahoe Boulevard including the event center and Kingsbury Transit Center.

Some burn bans lifted around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Fire restrictions are being lifted around the Lake Tahoe Basin starting Monday, October 9. Most districts will be operating under the same fall and winter rules, though the City of South Lake Tahoe will continue its ban on open burning.
South Lake Tahoe will allow Solo stoves and charcoal fires starting Monday, but no fires or fire pits with wood or other solid fuel due to City Ordinance.
Expect delays along US50 and SR28 as Caltrans continues roadwork

EL DORADO COUNTY/PLACER COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of continued traffic-interfering work on State Route 28 and U.S. Highway 50 within the Lake Tahoe Basin next week.
Electrical work related to the recent repaving of U.S. 50 in South Lake Tahoe will lead to several lane closures starting Monday, October 9.
Monday, October 9 from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. - One eastbound lane will be closed between Trout Creek and Fairway Avenue.
