A tip has led to the recovery of the body of missing Naomi Irion, the teenager whose disappearance on March 12 from a Fernley, Nevada Walmart parking lot gained national attention.

Acting on that tip, investigators from the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office along with a detective from the Lyon County Sheriff’s office responded to a remote part of Churchill County on Tuesday, March 29. Their investigation led them to a possible gravesite and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Investigative Services team was contacted and responded to assist in processing the scene.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) hosted a luncheon on March 2 to honor ten high school seniors from South Tahoe High School and George Whittell High School. The recipients of the "Young Women of Distinction" award were recognized for their exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The scope of work needed along US50 at Echo Summit and along the fire-damaged portions down to Kyburz is bigger than first thought and originally contracted for. The December storms caused more damage with debris movement in the Caldor Fire area, with additional damage still being identified, according to Caltrans.

Rock scaling work along Echo Summit wrapped up Friday, but the contractor hired, JPR, is back this week to finish up other work and there are one-way traffic controls in place.

Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBSTA) student-athletes are wrapping up a successful winter on the slopes, with a record number qualifying for spots at national races and competitions.

Tahoe Connection for Families (TCF) is holding an 18-hole four-peron scramble golf tournament on Sunday, June 5 at the Incline Village Championship Golf Course.

Tournament entry includes lunch, drinks, green fees, shared cart, Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive competitions.

Register before Wednesday, June 1 (Early bird through April 1). The cost is $200-$250 per person, $800-$900 per foursome. Mulligans will also be available for purchase. Sponsorships and sponsorship packages are available until Sunday, May 15.

Enjoy another presentation of the Wylder Hotel Hope Valley's Eastern Sierra History Series on Saturday, April 2. This week it is a living history presentation of “Snowshoe Thompson-Mailman of the Sierra.”

Thompson carried 80 lb. sacks of mail across the Sierra Nevada during winter snows for 20 years. He was a larger-than-life character, saving numerous lives, serving his community unwaveringly, and devoted his life to the betterment of all.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) will receive $269,000 to purchase crucial equipment and training materials for its Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy. The funds are a result of congressional appropriation championed by United States Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla in the federal spending bill.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is holding its 12th Annual Black Tie & Tails fundraising gala on May 14, 2022, from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - On March 11, the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 2 hosted a gala at the Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln, celebrating Region 2 Administrators of the Year. ACSA Region 2 represents educational leaders from the Northern California counties of Butte, Colusa, El Dorado, Glenn, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Sutter, and Yuba. Several administrators from the local El Dorado Charter were recognized.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week starts off with gusty winds, mountain snow, and rain showers in the lower elevations. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has a Winter Weather Advisory in place until Monday night at 8:00 p.m. The main effects will be above 7,000 feet. After a week of record high temperatures, they cool this week. There may be some thunderstorms Monday. This weather system exits the region Tuesday with most shower activity ending by sunrise. The remainder of the week looks dry with temperatures closer to average.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is going to be breezy today, then much cooler with rain and snow showers tonight into Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Weather Advisory starting at midnight Sunday, and ending Monday at 8:00 p.m.

Snow levels will remain near and above 6000 feet, with snow accumulations mainly limited to passes above 7000 feet due to the recent warmth and late-March sun angle. The only exception will be early Monday morning, where light, slushy accumulations may occur as low as 6000 feet.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Jaymee Levin saw the devastation on television after Russia attacked Ukraine and she once again jumped into action to help the people of the war-torn county.

Jaymee is a 16-year-old homeschooled student with South Lake Tahoe's Clarksville Academy. As she watched the news she saw babies, children, teens, and adults struggling with the cold in Ukraine as they were walking miles to get to safety. She jumped into action and spent a week collecting warm jackets, coats, beanies, gloves, and blankets from the South Lake Tahoe community for the Ukrainian refugees.

KINGS BEACH, Calif. - A new roundabout and other road improvements at the intersection of SR28/267 in Kings Beach got one step closer this week after the Placer County Board of Supervisors has approved $1.2 million to complete the design and facilitate right-of-way acquisitions for the Kings Beach Western Approach Project.

EL DORADO COUNTY

There have been 53 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death recorded since last Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 26,745. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive.

There are now 2.7 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you've been near the Y in South Lake Tahoe between 11:00 a.m. and noon you've probably heard the honks and seen the groups of people gathered with their yellow and blue signs and flags showing support of Ukraine.

Jana Menard, a local business owner, started the daily events in support of Ukraine.

"I couldn't sit back and not do anything," said Menard, who owns the Fragrance Vault near Stateline. "I wanted to go to the front line."

At an awards ceremony on March 14, the El Dorado County School Boards Association (EDCSBA) recognized school board and community members for their 2021 contributions. County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Ed Manansala, facilitated the presentations and noted, “After an extraordinary two years, it is a pleasure to be together again and to recognize and celebrate the work of all the leaders in the room tonight. Congratulations to all of our award recipients!”

MINDEN, Nev. - The current Douglas County Interim Library Director Julia Brown tendered her resignation to the Douglas County Library Board on March 17, 2022. Julia was appointed by the Library Board of Trustees as the Interim Director on July 27, 2021.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The final fifth grade class from Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) enjoyed an educational field trip to the top of Heavenly Thursday. Thanks to a Vail Resorts EpicPromise grant, staff from Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), LTUSD Career Technical Education team, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS), and the Sierra Avalanche Center teamed up to offer the Winter Adventure Program once again.

Aerosols carried in wildfire smoke plumes that are hundreds of hours old can still affect climate, according to a study out of the University of California, Davis.

The research, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, suggests that wildfire emissions even 10 days old can affect the properties of aerosols — suspended liquid or particles that are key to cloud formation.

Superior Court Commissioner Gary Slossberg announced today that he is seeking an open seat for El Dorado County Superior Court Judge in the upcoming election on June 7, 2022.
