Milestone reached on $55.4M US50 project at Camino

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – A key component of the US50 Camino Safety Project has been completed, allowing work to proceed on the remaining elements of the $55.4 million project, which includes $3.4 million in funding from Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.
The replacement of two El Dorado Irrigation District water lines clears the way for the contractor, Security Paving Inc., to move ahead with local road improvements, which include a roundabout connecting to the new Pondorado Undercrossing being built.
Redistricting in California changes boundaries in South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The 2020 Census shows El Dorado County grew by about 10,000 residents with the largest percentage of those new residents on the western slope, and that will be changing the supervisorial boundaries.
The population estimate in 2020 was 191,185, and since then another 2,036 people have moved into El Dorado County.
Every decade the census is completed and the boundaries of elected officials from supervisors up to congress members are adjusted if necessary to match the population at the time.

While they still bridge the gap between high school and postsecondary plans, they also provide career skills training and help students get ready for college or work in a way they never have.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has announced the return of the 4th of July Parade for 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted many community events, the Parade being one of them, which resulted in a two-year hiatus. In addition to bringing back the parade this year, the City has created a theme for the event: “Tahoe Strong, A Salute to Our Heroes.”
Also new this year will be the 'Best of the Parade' awards. A judging panel will score all parade entries, and trophies will be awarded for the following categories:

The actors, singers, and stage crew performed in front of Lake Tahoe Unified School District kindergartners Wednesday morning, bringing enthusiastic applause and appreciation for a great show.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Lake Tahoe Community College was ranked as the number one best community college in California according to a compiled list from Stacker that uses rankings from Niche, a company that ranks schools nationally from K-12 to graduate schools. In addition to coming in on top in California’s community college system, LTCC was also ranked Number 12 in the entire country for best community college.

Old Bart's Tahoe Apartments in South Lake Tahoe gets clean bill of health under new ownership

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The new owners of what was called Bart's Tahoe Apartments in South Lake Tahoe finalized the purchase of the complex in December 2021 for $6M and have been working diligently with the City in correcting the long list of problems that had plagued the property located at 1224 Ski Run Blvd.
They have now passed the South Lake Tahoe Multi-Family Dwelling and Inspection Program and earned a clean bill of health along with a certificate of compliance.
Mt. Rose snowpack fares better than the California slopes: 70% of average

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Mt. Rose Ski Area snowpack was measured Monday, showing a snow depth of 55", 24.2" water content, and 70 percent of the April 4 median, according to the Natural Resources Conservation Service of
Nevada (NRCS). Jeff Anderson, NRCS hydrologist, was at Mt. Rose to conduct the manual monthly measurement.
“We’ve already lost about a third of the snow this year at our SNOTEL sites,” said Anderson.

Suspect arrested after car chase starting at Lake Tahoe ends with a home owner detaining him at gunpoint

A 30-year-old man from Elk Grove, Calif. has been arrested on several charges after leading law enforcement on a chase from US50 near Cave Rock through Carson City and into Reno.
At 10:00 p.m. on April 3, deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Ram truck near Cave Rock. The driver of the vehicle fled from deputies and proceeded over Spooner Summit into Carson City.
Living Snow Project: TERC presentation on understanding pink snow and life in the snowpack

The Living Snow Project (LSP), with the help of the outdoor recreation community, is building the largest database of pink snow microbiome biodiversity in the world. Pink snow, sometimes called watermelon snow, is a diverse group of microorganisms that are adapted to live in snow and are dominated by pink-colored algae. The snow algae can influence snowmelt rates and offer insight into life in extreme environments.
The project will be discussed at a UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) virtual presentation on Thursday, April 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Calif. - In honor of Autism Awareness Month, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped one of its vehicles with colored puzzle pieces. This is the third year the department has done this as a way of inviting children and adults with autism to meet police officers in a casual setting and to encourage caretakers of those on the spectrum to sign up for the Autism Recognition Alert Program.
Tahoe Swim Club takes 15 to Reno meet; Accepting more interested swimmers

The Tahoe Swim Club was well represented in Reno at the recent Northern Nevada Age Group Open in Reno. They took fifteen swimmers to the meet and for many of them, it was their very first meet.
Aged 7-14, the local swimmers have been working hard at practice while enjoying being part of the team.
The Tahoe Swim Club had a strong showing and is looking forward to upcoming meets this spring and summer.

Gaming Control Board: Nevada casino win up 44% from 2021; South Shore only region with a drop

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,113,148,010 for the month of February 2022, a gain of 44.10 percent over the same period in 2021. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casino's win was down 3.93 percent over the same period with their gaming revenue of $19,672,671, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report. This was the second consecutive month for the South Shore to be down slightly from the previous year's figures and was the only region in the state to see a decrease in the win.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno for Monday, April 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. West winds are expected from 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe are from 2 to 4 feet.
There will be mild temperatures to start off the week, according to NWS Reno. Any rain chances will be limited to far northern areas towards the Oregon border. Much warmer temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday with a tie of record high temperatures possible, then cooling over next weekend.

What started as an annual company meeting for Chase International turned into an unprecedented 20-minute event that raised $100,000 to support “Operation Save the Tahoe Basin” fundraising project to purchase a Fire Rescue Helicopter. DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team located human remains on Monday, March 28 while conducting training. The remains were located in the Sunrise Pass area of the Pinenut Mountains, near the Lyon County line.
Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators are attempting to identify the identity of the decedent.
At this time, no other information is available.
Incline Village man facing multiple charges after aiming gun at housecleaners, firing it into air

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - A 41-year-old Incline Village man has been arrested on multiple felony counts following an incident at a residence in the 800 block of Southwood Boulevard.
Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) patrol deputies were called to the Incline Village home shortly before 9:40 a.m. on March 30 for an assault with a deadly weapon in progress.
The deputies arrived in three minutes. Nevada State Police Highway patrol troopers and deputies from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist.

Driest January-March in over 100 years in Sierra leads to local snow measurement of 4% of average

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The monthly measurement of snow at Phillips Station Friday was dismal, a sign of a "very bad water situation" for the state of California. They found a snow depth of just 2.5 inches, with a snow-water equivalent of just a single inch. The latter amount is just four percent of the historic average for the spot west of Lake Tahoe on April 1.
As a state, the current snowpack is 38 percent of average, far below the 154 percent statewide on January 1, 2022.

Most of the Caldor Fire area in the Eldorado National Forest and all of it in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit are already open or set to open Friday, April 1. Even if open for public access, those visiting the forest are reminded to use extra caution when recreating due to the hazards that remain in recently burned landscapes.
The following roads, trails, and developed recreation sites directly impacted by the fire in the Eldorado National Forest (ENF) will remain closed for ongoing hazard mitigation under Forest Order 03-22-06:

Annual Heavenly Ski Patrol Skate night gets special needs kids and adults on the ice

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Heavenly Ski Patrol Skate night at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena will be held on Friday, April 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
It is an evening of fun for South Lake Tahoe area special needs kids and adults with free pizza, free skates, a visit with the Ski Patrol Dogs, and more. The ski patrol will be pushing participants on sleds and they will also be organizing an inclusive hockey game. Everyone can use the sleds to support themselves independently while skating.

Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program wins award during Nevada Taxpayers Association

The Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program was awarded an Honorable Mention by the Nevada Taxpayers Association for the 24th annual Cashman Good Government Award.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) made the announcement today.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – After a two-year hiatus of the annual Independence Day fireworks shows on the North Shore due to pandemic constraints, a new twist to the time-honored tradition is being planned for July 3 in Kings Beach and July 4 in Tahoe City.
The North Lake Tahoe Resort Association, North Tahoe Business Association and Tahoe City Downtown Association have announced that drone light shows will be part of the Independence Day celebrations in place of traditional pyrotechnic fireworks displays.
