Christmas Cheer closed this week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Christmas Cheer, the community non-profit that helps supply food to those in need will be closed on their normal giveaway days Tuesday-Thursday.

Their offices at 1120 3rd St., South Lake Tahoe needed new flooring.

They will reopen for customers on Tuesday, March 15.

COVID-19 daily cases for South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County

There have been 20 new cases of COVID-19 and no new deaths recorded since Friday in El Dorado County. This brings the total of COVID-19 cases in the county to 26,535. This does not include all at-home tests that may have been positive. Case rates continue to drop.

There are now 7.0 new cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in the county, the lowest in weeks.

Prescribed burn operations set to continue around Lake Tahoe this week

The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) will continue widespread prescribed fire operations this week around the Lake Tahoe Basin, weather and conditions permitting. These prescribed fires are expected to continue throughout the winter season to help land managers reduce hazardous fuels that can feed unwanted wildfires. Smoke will be present.

Douglas County commissioners seek to fill opening on planning commission

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is currently accepting applications for one appointment to the Planning Commission to fill out a term through the end of the year.

The Douglas County Planning Commission is an advisory body to the Board of County Commissioners and is responsible for providing advice on land use planning matters, reviewing development applications for compliance with County plans/ordinances, including amendments to the Douglas County Master Plan, and the Development Code.

Some Lake Tahoe ski areas announce extension of ski and ride season

Vail Resorts announced today that Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood have extended their 2021-22 seasons.

Heavenly will remain open an extra week, until Sunday, April 24, and Kirkwood will add three weeks to its calendar, ending the season on Sunday, May 1, weather and snow conditions permitting.

Palisades will end winter operations on Sunday, May 16, conditions permitting. There will be special spring skiing hours of operation.

Northstar is slated to end its season on Monday, April 18.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will warm to start the work week with gusty winds in higher elevations of the Sierra tonight into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. A quick-moving weather slider system will bring breezy winds, a low chance for rain and snow showers, and a cool down Wednesday afternoon and Thursday. The weekend looks warm and dry with the potential to shift to a more active weather pattern next week.

National Groundwater Awareness Week: 95% of drinking water in South Lake Tahoe is groundwater

It is the 23rd National Groundwater Awareness Week, March 6-12, a week of awareness, education, and advocacy focusing on one of the nation’s most precious resources.

Groundwater is a critical resource for the drinking water supply in California, especially during periods of drought when it is relied upon to back-stop reduced surface water supplies.

South Lake Tahoe City Council votes to not collect $382,500 in small business loans

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the pandemic, the South Lake Tahoe City Council issued $382,500 in small business loans to 53 businesses through its Small Business Sustainability (SBS) Loan Program. The loans issued were between $3,000 and $15,000 (one at $3,000, one at $4,500, 33 at $5,000, 12 at $10,000 and six at $15,000). Two more loans applications totaling $25,000 were rejected.

During the Council meeting this week, they voted 3-1 to forgive the loan balances and instead make them a grant.

Rep. McClintock creates legislation to end what he calls "let it burn" policy of USFS

Two US Congressmen, Tom McClintock (CA-04) and Doug LaMalfa (CA-01) introduced legislation this week, directing the U.S. Forest Service to immediately suppress wildfires on National Forest System. They called for an end to what they say is the USFS "let it burn" policy.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office investigating THC gummy bears at middle school

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) opened an investigation on Thursday, March 3 after a 12-year-old middle school student reported feeling "very strange."

It has been determined that the student, along with a number of other students at the middle school in the Carson Valley, had ingested gummy bears that were actually marijuana edibles that contain THC (the psychoactive drug in marijuana). The students got the marijuana edibles from another student who stole them from her father and brought them to school.

Rock on US50 blasted, clean up underway

Update 2:37 p.m.: US50 is now open in both directions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The massive rock that fell onto US50 at Echo Summit Thursday evening was blown up this morning at 10:00 a.m. and the resulting debris is now being cleaned off.

The large boulder, at first estimated to be two stories high, three stories wide, was filled with blasting tubes overnight before the "fire in the hole" was called out prior to detonation.

"We are fortunate in that our South Lake Tahoe Maintenance crew is trained in boulder blasting," said Caltrans.

South Tahoe High Varsity Girls Basketball team wraps up great season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe High School Girls Varsity Basketball team has just wrapped up an amazing season. Starting with winning a tournament at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy in Rocklin, the girls' varsity team finished as co-champs of Northern Nevada 3A West division for the first time since 1990.

Massive boulder falls onto both lanes of US50 on Echo Summit

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Both lanes of US50 over Echo Summit are closed this evening after a massive section of rock fell onto the roadway.

Emergency personnel responded at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 after calls received about rock the "size of a semi," were received by the dispatch center.

Caltrans and CHP are at the scene and signage on the highway is alerting motorists the road is closed.

It is unknown at this time how long it will take to remove the rock. Other routes are open to travel across the Sierra. Visit https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for all information.

Invasive species test area to close off areas of Tahoe Keys to mid-July

South Lake Tahoe teens represent area on the snow nationally and internationally

Remember these names: Piper Arnold, Veda Hallen, and Graydon Ross.

The three teens from South Lake Tahoe are making their presence known at the national level, and for the girls, they will be competing at the international level this week. Piper and Veda are headed to Leysin, Switzerland as members of the 2022 US Ski snd Snowboard Jr. World Championship team. Graydon continues his season at the USASA Nationals in Colorado.

Man who escaped South Lake Tahoe jail arrested in Las Vegas

El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) Investigations and the FBI Sacramento field office worked cooperatively to locate Ruben Zavala Garcia, who escaped from confinement at the El Dorado County South Lake Tahoe Detention Facility while on detail on November 23, 2021.

Zavala Garcia was arrested on Thursday, February 24, 2022, after being located by the Las Vegas FBI Fugitive Task Force.

The healing power of dogs at Barton Skilled Nursing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dogs are helping to keep a home-like atmosphere at the Barton Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in South Lake Tahoe.

As COVID-19 progressed, the toll the pandemic restrictions had on residents began to take their toll, and Miranda Miller, the facility's activity director, knew she had to get some of the normalcy back that made it home to so many seniors.

While keeping in line with all the COVID-19 protocols. Miller decided it was time to safely bring the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) pet therapy teams back to her patients.

Call Before You Haul program to help prevent spread of invasive species to Lake Tahoe

Boat transporters can call a new aquatic invasive species (AIS) hotline when planning to haul vessels across state lines to prevent the spread of invasive species and to help them with the watercraft inspection process. Transporters headed for Lake Tahoe can be connected to Tahoe Resource Conservation District boat inspectors to help facilitate and expedite the watercraft inspection process, and if needed, decontamination.

Sunday community fundraisers at Flatstick Pub with South Tahoe Futbol Club in March

Parolee arrested after South Lake Tahoe search

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the morning of March 1, 2022, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) was notified of Christopher Hendrickson, a parolee, who was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance and armed with a firearm, both things not allowed while on parole. The report they received said Hendrickson was on foot in the community.
