MAP files legal complaint against TRPA over Phase 2 housing amendments

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Mountain Area Preservation (MAP) has announced they are legally challenging what they say is the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency’s (TRPA) violation of the bi-state compact, TRPA regulations, and the approval of the Phase 2 Housing Code Amendments. MAP says the approval of the amendments could negatively impact Tahoe’s natural environment and public safety for present and future generations.

Thursday marked the culmination of the tenth year of this immersive, snowshoeing educational experience for local students, according to the South Tahoe Environmental Education Coalition (STEEC).

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As the excitement builds for Super Bowl LVIII, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) reminds football fans to intercept impaired driving if they are heading out to a Super Bowl party and plan on drinking. Make sure you stick to the “Go Safely” game plan and choose a sober way to go.
During Super Bowl LVIII weekend (Feb. 10 and 11), SLTPD will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Douglas County School Board agenda: Discussion of superintendent contract, $32K legal fees, leaving NASB

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School Board will hold its next regular meeting on Tuesday, February 13 at 4 p.m. in the Douglas High School Media Room.
On the consent agenda to be approved are the bills from the District's legal firm, Joey Gilbert Law. The January invoices total $32,618.61, and with the $39,958.11 invoice approved last month, the firm's bills since being hired in July are now over $242,000.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vitalant urges all eligible blood donors to make an appointment and give in February after plummeting temperatures and harsh winter weather, including rain, snow, sleet, and wind, caused blood drives to cancel and hindered donors from getting to Vitalant centers and mobile blood drives. Nearly 2,000 expected Vitalant blood donations went uncollected in January, including from scheduled drives in the Tahoe and Northern Nevada region.

Petition to get Douglas County VHR ban on the ballot fails to get enough signatures

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County residents who sought to get an initiative on the November ballot to ban vacation home rentals (VHRs) have failed to get the required signatures.
On Wednesday, the Douglas County Clerk’s Office filed a "Certificate of Petition Insufficiency" related to the petition that had circulated to amend the ordinance, banning in neighborhoods and allowing them only commercial and tourist-zoned areas.
Petitioners needed 4,389 valid signatures and they ended up with 4,277 accepted, 112 short.

City of South Lake Tahoe launches snowplow tracking tool for areas within city limits

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has launched a new snowplow tracking tool allowing residents to view the progress of snow removal operations throughout the city. GPS tracking devices installed on each snowplow provide updates to the tracking system once a street has been plowed. Residents can easily view the status of snowplow operations in near real-time via a color-coding system applied to each street. Streets on the tracking tool map will change color based on the timeframe of service.

Forbes Travel Guide, an independent, global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas, and ocean cruises, today unveiled its 2024 Star Awards. The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe and The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Lake Tahoe were each awarded four stars in their categories.
The hotel ratings expanded into new destinations, including Baku, Azerbaijan; Curacao; Iceland; Sardinia, Italy; Kenya; Algarve and Madeira, Portugal; Rwanda; Koh Samui, Thailand; Rabat, Morocco; Makkah, Saudi Arabia; and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

For February, the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) is collaborating with Live Violence Free to share what healthy relationships and communication look like. Even though we are two months into a new year, it is not too late to make 2024 a year to be a good communicator and build positive and healthy relationships in all aspects of your life. It is important to know what behaviors are okay in any kind of relationship from love interests to friendships and with parents and trusted adults.
TASK is going to feature a three-part campaign for healthy relationships and communication.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - In a move that shouldn't be surprising to anyone following the Douglas County School Board, four members of the board approved the hiring of John Ramirez Jr. as its next superintendent. This move was much to the displeasure of a majority of the public taking part in the meeting.

The Tahoe Resource Conservation District, a member of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, is encouraging homeowners and residents at Lake Tahoe to participate in the Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Community program in 2024. The initiative focuses on creating Fire Adapted Communities through a multifaceted approach that includes physical measures like home hardening and defensible space and prevention, planning, education, and Firewise certification.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over the weekend, the Cheer and Dance Teams of South Tahoe High School took part in the Northern Nevada Cheer and Dance Invitational. The Cheer Team performed exceptionally, earning a well-deserved 3rd place trophy. The Dance Team also shined by competing in multiple categories and capturing two 1st place trophies in the Hip Hop and Pom Dance divisions. Moreover, Madison Cisneros delivered a breathtaking contemporary solo performance that earned her a 3rd place win.

Mitchell Duane Jones passed away on January 26, 2024, following a period of declining health. Mitch was a graduate of Armijo High School in Fairfield, CA, and UC Berkeley, where he was very active in the marching band.
After graduating from college, Mitch became the band director at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, Calif. where the band had the honor of marching in the 1980 Tournament of Roses Parade under his direction.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An active weather pattern continues overnight and tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Snow showers are expected to return overnight for some areas above 5000 feet. Accumulations will be lighter, but some valley locations could

Jimmy was born January 18, 1945 in Woodward, Oklahoma to Nick and Theresa Reszetylo. The oldest of six children he graduated from Aliquippa High School in Aliquippa, PA. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Minot, North Dakota where it was so cold he volunteered to go to Vietnam in 1966. Upon honorable discharge, he moved to San Diego and worked for Beneficial Finance then on to Ventura County where he won highest producer awards at Winfield Title Co.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is hosting an art show at the Lake Tahoe Airport from February 16 to February 19.
Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, a select number of club members’ artwork is chosen to be in the show. The art is separated into four age groups: 6 to 9 years old, 10 to 12 years old, 13 to 15 years old, and 16 to 18 years old. Their work is in the four art categories of drawing, painting, sculpture, and pastels, with up to 16 art pieces on display - one for each age in each category.

Douglas County closes non-essential services for Monday, vote centers will be open

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Due to severe winter weather and hazardous driving conditions, Douglas County Manager Jenifer Davidson has authorized the closure of County offices on Monday, February 5.
Sheriff Dan Coverley advises motorists to avoid nonessential travel during hazardous driving conditions. County officials are monitoring the situation and will reopen offices when safe to do so.
Aside from essential public safety, corrections, courts, and elections personnel, County offices will close for the day.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - "You bet on us, so we placed a bet for you," said the favors at the September 2023 wedding of locals Matt and Jessica Grime at the 4H Camp in Stateline.
What was that bet you ask?
The Grimes purchased 180 $2 tickets at the Harveys Lake Tahoe sportsbook for the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl. They made the bets on June 7, so each $2 bet would pay out $17 extra, for a total of $19, with the +850 money line it came with should the 49ers win on Sunday.
Rep. Kiley joins El Dorado County DA in backing initiative to reverse much of Prop. 47

District Attorneys from El Dorado, Placer, and Nevada counties joined Representative Kevin Kiley last week to discuss the initiative to increase drug and property crime penalties and allow a new class of crime called treatment-mandated felonies. Many are trying to get the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act on the ballot in November, and still need about 200,000 signatures to get it there.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responds to calls throughout the county. The following calls only pertain to the South and West Shore, including Meyers, South Lake Tahoe, Meeks Bay, Tahoma, and the Echo Summit area. There may be some missing calls due to sheriff's logs not being completed at the time of the story.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning to be in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday. Heavy snow is expected in the greater Lake Tahoe area and Mono County.
Snow accumulations 3 to 5 feet above 7000 feet along the Sierra crest. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet below 7000 feet, except 1 to 4 inches for areas below 5500 feet in Mono County.
Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust donates $2.66M to mental and behavioral health access in Vail communities

Mental health access and support continue to be a critical issue for mountain communities across North America. On February 1, the Katz Amsterdam Charitable Trust announced that Rob Katz, Vail Resorts executive chairperson, and his wife, Elana Amsterdam, New York Times bestselling author and founder of Elana's Pantry, have made significant contributions totaling more than $2.66 million to support mental and behavioral health programs in 12 mountain communities, including 10 where Vail Resorts operates.
Douglas County School Board to hold open house with superintendent candidates before selection

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County School Board is holding a special meeting on February 6 to possibly select a new superintendent. The board has selected two candidates to choose from, John Ramirez, Jr., and Dennis Holmes.
The Board will be holding a "Meet and Greet" with the two candidates on Monday, February 5 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Douglas High School Commons. This will be a good opportunity for parents, staff, and the community to meet the candidates, ask questions, and learn more about their visions.
Letter: Special interest groups desperately trying to protect their pot of gold

This letter is in response to the letter written by Property Manager Kevin Kjer. Mr. Kjer has been making a substantial sum of money renting homes in purely residential neighborhoods to people who don’t care about the community, abuse their neighbors, and regularly trespass on neighbors’ land and HOA’s docks and beaches.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Monday, January 22, Bread & Broth served 120 dinner guests, setting the record for the most dinner guests to attend the weekly Monday Meal since it first began serving free hot meals in October 1989.
All community members are encouraged to join the Bread & Broth (B&B) volunteers and the evenings' Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorship crew members to enjoy the weekly Monday evenings’ nutritious and tasty meals and receive free bags of food to help tide them through the rest of the week.
Work on Apache Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Connectivity Project set to start mid-May

MEYERS, Calif. - Funding for the Apache Avenue Pedestrian Safety and Connectivity Project in Meyers is in place. Caltrans announced the awarding of $1.7 million in Active Transportation Program funds for the project and combined with multiple sources including federal and local funds the project is ready for El Dorado County (EDC) Board of Supervisors approval.
If approved by the Board on February 27, the project will go to bid with an anticipated start of construction in mid-May 2024, and completion this fall.
