Eighteen years since Sonny Bono died while skiing in South Lake Tahoe

It has been 18 years since Sonny Bono, a California congressman and entertainer who had performed at Lake Tahoe, died in a skiing accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Bono was 62 when he set out skiing on that Monday morning, January 5, 1998. He was first reported missing at 4:30 p.m. In hopes that he left the mountain without telling anyone, Bono was paged in each of the Stateline casinos.

Man arrested in Hawaii after burglary spree from El Dorado County to San Luis Obispo

A Bay Area man was arrested on New Year's Eve after he got off an airplane in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Tyrone Brennen is the suspect in two El Dorado County burglaries, one in Cool and the other in Coloma.

Numerous agencies were involved in the collaborative investigation that resulted in Brennen's arrest. Besides El Dorado County, he is also suspected of burglaries in Placer, Nevada and San Luis Obispo counties.

Brennen is being transported to San Luis Obispo where he faces the first charge of burglary.

Conner vs. City of South Lake Tahoe could cost $100,000

Round two of Councilwoman JoAnn Conner versus the City of South Lake Tahoe and City Manager Nancy Kerry was originally on the court docket for Monday, but it didn't happen and the next court date has yet to be set.

Pet of the Week: Chester

The "Pet of the Week" is Chester, a five-month old Fila Mastiff / Pit Bull mix. He is going to be a BIG dog!

Chester needs a family without children under 12 who is committed to taking him to training classes. He loves to play with other dogs and did not chase the cats that he met at Animal Control.

Chains controls around Lake Tahoe as storm passes through

3:00 p.m. update 1/5/16: Well, the storm had another surge and chain controls are back up over Echo from three miles east of Kyburz to Meyers and on 80 from one mile east of Baxter to the Donner Lake interchange.

220 p.m. update 1/5/16: Chain controls over Echo Summit (Hwy 50) and Donner Pass (I80) have been lifted.

Chain controls have been up through the Sierra Nevada for most of the day as snows passes over the region.

Tahoe Chamber looking for ambassadors for the new year

The bi-state Tahoe Chamber is reaching to their membership and offering them the opportunity to develop new business relationships through its Ambassador Program. Applications for the 2016 Chamber Ambassador Program are currently being accepted through January 15.

Ambassadors are a group of professionals that assist and interact with other chamber members on a variety of levels. There are now over 650 members in the organization.

Active duty military offered season pass to Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows for $25

Two good news stories out of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows today.

First, they are now offering a season pass to all active duty military in exchange for a $25 donation to the “Military to the Mountains” program, a partnership between Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, High Fives Foundation, Achieve Tahoe (formerly Disabled Sports USA Far West) and Adaptive Training Foundation.

Nevada fatalities on the road rose in 2015

While California figures are not in yet, Nevada has released a report on their traffic fatalities for 2015.

Preliminary data shows that there were 321 Nevada traffic deaths in 2015, an increase by 30 deaths over the previous year.

When compared with the number of miles driven in Nevada, though, traffic deaths have dropped from an average of 1.54 deaths per every 100 million miles traveled in 2008 to 1.13 fatalities per 100 million miles in 2013. Statewide, traffic fatalities reached an all-time high of 432 in 2006.

Gardnerville man arrested on domestic battery and child abuse charges

A Douglas County man is in jail this morning after allegedly battering his wife and strangling her, shooting off a gun inside their home and resisting arrest on Monday, January 5, 2016.

At 11:10 p.m., deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call from a home in the 1300 block of Banner Drive in the Gardnerville Ranchos neighborhood. A woman had called, saying she had been battered and strangled by her husband.

Caltrans does routine testing on avalanche system on Echo Summit

The Caltrans Avalanche Team was at Echo Summit Monday for a routine test on their Gazex system which is in place on the mountain.

A message went out on twitter for those that follow @TahoeRoads, advising people of a loud bang that would happen. "if you hear a loud bang in a few minutes, it's not NYE again," the tweet said. "Caltrans testing avalanche control cannon off Hwy 50."

There is a video attached to this story that shows a demonstration on how this sytem works for avalanche control. The chambers of the Gazex remotely shoot compressed air into the snow.

Man who inspired South Lake Tahoe act of kindness movement dies of ALS

Just over two months ago, we wrote about how a large group of South Tahoe High alumni were rallying behind one of their classmates, Kevin Sullivan, who was suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

At October's homecoming football game at STHS, many of Kevin's classmates from the class of 1984 and former teammates from the wrestling and football teams came together to honor Kevin and fondly share their memories.

Tahoe Fire Blood Drive on Martin Luther King holiday

Storm headed to Lake Tahoe; 4-8" of snow expected at lake level

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Lake Tahoe from 2:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2016.

The National Weather Service changed the storm from a "winter weather warning" to the advisory. Expect snow accumulations of 4-8" at lake level and 8-15" at the upper elevations. The strongest snow is forecast to begin at 4:00 a.m.

There will be some winds associated with this system with south winds gusting to 25 mph in the valleys and gusts of 80-100 on the ridges.

Chair falls from Heavenly lift; 65 people evacuated

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - A chair fell from Heavenly Mountain Resort's North Bowl chairlift today, resulting in 65 people being stranded for two hours before being evacuated from the lift.

Just before 11 a.m. on January 3, 2016, the unoccupied chair fell off the cable and the lift was immediately shut down.

Lara Miller of South Lake Tahoe was among those stranded on the chairlift. She said the resort's ski patrol checked on the stranded skiers during the two hour ordeal.

Gold Medalist Maddie Bowman at Subaru event at Sierra-at-Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman, Olympic Gold Medalist in the Ski Halfpipe, will be at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, January 9, 2016 for the Subaru Conquer Winter Day.

There will be giveaways during the special event, including a chance to have lunch and ski with Maddie. She will be giving autographs from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Subaru tent.

First South Lake Tahoe baby of the year born on January 1

When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, Rogelio Castañeda and a very pregnant Margarita García gave a New Year’s toast with a glass of champagne and a glass of apple cider, respectively. Three hours later, after a brief slumber, Margarita woke up in labor.

The couple headed to Barton Family Birthing Center and at 6:36 p.m. on January 1, Jeremy Nicolas Castañeda García was born. Jeremy weighed seven pounds, eleven ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He was named after Margarita’s mother Geremia, who passed away when Margarita was young.

Chance of snow all week long in South Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service in Reno says that an active winter weather pattern will be returning to the Lake Tahoe region next week as several winter systems are poised to impact the Sierra and western Nevada every one to two days beginning Monday and possibly lasting into next weekend.

Man's fall at Heavenly turns into international bear attack story

A ski trip to South Lake Tahoe by a group of friends from the San Francisco Bay Area turned into a trip to the hospital after one of them fell while skiing on December 29, 2015.

Ski accidents do happens often, but the international attention the victim's accident got from a news source in Ireland gained attention from South Lake Tahoe locals following the photo and story on social media that the injury was from a bear attack.

South Lake Tahoe arrests down over the New Year holiday

As usual, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department bolstered our patrol staffing to meet the emergency response needs of our crowded City during the New Year celebration period. There were squads of officers patrolling the state line area, the Snow Globe festival and extra officers were also assigned to work patrol throughout the City. South Lake Tahoe was quite full with holiday revelers, and the number of calls for emergency police responses was consistent with recent past years. We are pleased to report there was a decrease in arrests as compared to last year.

According to Health magazine, each January roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions.

The celebratory crowd at Stateline was once again a small crowd, estimated by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to be between 5,000-10,000. The road through the casino corridor didn't have to close until 11:58 p.m.

Thousands of Nevada earthquakes kept seismologists busy in 2015

If you live in Nevada, chances are you felt an earthquake in 2015. The University of Nevada, Reno's Seismological Laboratory said there were 17,500 earthquakes in the state during the year, 231 of those recently in south Reno.

South Tahoe High graduate Graham Kent in the director of the Nevada Seismological Lab. "While the Reno shaking is fresh in our minds, what's really bumping the number up from the background rates is the energetic sequence in far northwestern Nevada, the Sheldon sequence," he said.

Minors and alcohol the biggest issue for law enforcement at SnowGlobe

The three-day SnowGlobe music festival in South Lake Tahoe attracts a young crowd with many college, and high school students in attendance. They enjoy the electronic music with DJs that are heard throughout the venue on the three stages.

What is also popular at the event is drinking. The trained staff that serves alcohol at SnowGlobe knows what to look for in the way of fake identification which is evident of the citations issued over the first two days at the festival.

Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show

The fifth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held Friday, April 22, 2016, from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Saturday, April 23, 2016, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

The show will return to the Recreation Complex at 1080 Rufus Allen Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe. Admission is free, and all attendees will receive a free ticket for a door prize drawing. The popular show attracts over a thousand attendees during the two days, and offers free give-a-ways, food, activities for the family, and vendors

City of South Lake Tahoe's 2015 Year in Review

As we welcome in 2016, the City of South Lake Tahoe would like to reflect on the accomplishments of 2015. The following is a summary of accomplishments during 2015.

Strategic Priority: Fiscal Sustainability
The most important issue facing cities and local agencies is continued steadfast attention to the budget, both short term and long term fiscal impacts.
· FY 15/16 budget adopted on time and without use of alternative revenues (3rd consecutive year).
· Adopted 5-year Financial Forecast and 5-Year Capital Investment Plan.

Woman found on roof at Edgewood Tahoe

4:30 p.m. update 12/31/15:

The woman who was a focus of a search in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday was found by Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.

At 3:30 p.m., April Torres was located on the roof top of Edgewood Tahoe Golf Resort. She has been transported to Barton Hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.

MontBleu surveillance employees spent the day searching through their films and the last time she was seen on film was when she left the casino on foot and went to the corner of the Loop Road and Highway 50.

The investigation continues.

Climate change experts and meteorologists attending Operation Sierra Storm

South Lake Tahoe is host to Operation Sierra Storm each year, a leading national weather conference that brings together those that report the weather with South Lake Tahoe activities and top climate scientists.

The three-day conference runs from January 6-9, 2016 and the public has the opportunity to attend the Friday sessions that feature California State Sen. Pro Tem Kevin de León and Alexander (Sasha) Gershunov, Research Meteorologist for Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Reno Tahoe Airport holding workshops about their role in the local economy

Airports around the country have been impacted by changes in the airline industry, and the Reno Tahoe International Airport is no exception.

Since the entire region an airport services benefits from increased flights and passengers, airport and tourism officials are reaching out to local communities in a series of "Airport 101."

South Lake Tahoe Rotary abandons car raffle; asks for community help

For many years, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has given away a car during their annual Great Car Raffle, but that tradition has come to an end.

Club President Dave Jinkens announced Wednesday that the raffle doesn't raise the money needed to give away almost $50,000 annually to the community through scholarships, donations and grants.

There are two reasons Jinkens said the club had to abandon the raffle. After buying a car and covering the cost of the raffle, proceeds weren't what they once were and they've had to start dipping into reserves to meet donation requests.

South Shore casinos have a good month in November; Win figure up 17%

The Nevada Gaming Control Board released their gaming revenue figures Wednesday, and revenue for casinos on the South Shore experienced the biggest gain they've seen in months.

Net revenue for local casinos is up 17.26% when compared to figures from November, 2014, leaving their fiscal year total still down. Local casinos figures are 11.38% lower than the same period last year.

In the state of Nevada, casinos as a whole experienced a net gain of 7.76%, leaving the fiscal year totals almost even with the the prior year.

Sierra snowpack at an encouraging 136% of average

The first snowpack survey of the season was taken Wednesday in Phillips, showing the snowpack us at 136% of average with a water content of 16.3 inches.

"This is encouraging but not where we'd like to be," said Frank Gehkre, the Chief Snow Surveyor for the California Department of Water Resources. "This is clearly much better than last year at this time."

One year ago the survey showed the snowpack at 47% of average.

Day One of SnowGlobe: Excited music fans, very few complaints

There is snow on the ground and a chill in the air, perfect conditions for the thousands of music fans in South Lake Tahoe for SnowGlobe 2015.

Lines of young men and women, some dressed in costume or wearing wild hats, eagerly awaited the begin of the three day music festival. Anticipation had been growing for weeks as the social media hype was on.

New on the South Shore: Neighborhood Burgers opens on Kingsbury

A new burger place has opened on the South Shore, giving residents on the Nevada side of town a new option for eating out (or on the run).

Neighborhood Burgers was opened by locals Erik Watada and Matt Grime, and in less than a week of being open its already a hit.

Grime, owner of The Fox & Hound at the top of Kingsbury, joined Watada in providing an option for people to get a quick bite, especially those on the Nevada side where options are at a minimum.

"Always Buddy" tent set up at SnowGlobe in memory of Alyssa Byrne

It's been three years since 19-year-old Alyssa Byrne from Petaluma, Calif., died after attending New Year's Eve SnowGlobe Music Festival becoming separated from her friends. Her body was found off Pioneer Trail between Black Bart Avenue and Al Tahoe Boulevard on January 4, 2013.

Search and Rescue teams kept busy with stranded motorists and snowmobilers

Heavy snow stranded two snowmobilers and a vehicle in the Sierra Nevada during recent storms, bringing out search and rescue volunteers from both El Dorado and Alpine Counties in the last ten days.
