The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has received $850,000 from the first round of funding from the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) to work on five local projects. All of the planned projects will improve the visitor experience by reducing deferred maintenance and enhancing recreational infrastructure.

South Lake Tahoe man in jail after early morning arrest

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An early morning execution of a search warrant in South Lake Tahoe Thursday resulted in the arrest of 33-year-old resident, Johnathan Towne. Neighbors in the neighborhood around Church of Latter-Day Saints church near Bijou Elementary were awoken when law enforcement from multiple agencies descended upon a home in the 3400 block of Champlain Drive.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department had its MRAP vehicle in play and law enforcement surrounded the home, according to witnesses.

Barton Health buys old Lakeside Inn to expand medical care in Lake Tahoe

STATELINE, Nev. - When the Lakeside Inn announced its permanent closure in April 2020, speculation has been circulating about what would be built on the property. That speculation can now end as Barton Health has announced it has purchased the property. They closed escrow on Friday.

Fire reported in South Lake Tahoe

3:41 p.m. UPDATE: The vegetation fire has now been contained. Crews are still on-site at this time. It is unknown how this fire started, but an investigation is pending.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Crews from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and surrounding agencies are responding to the area of the Upper Truckee Marsh, the scene of fire currently about one-half acre in size.

The call was received at 2:06 p.m. Firefighters are determining the best way into the marsh with water as it is halfway between any streets.

U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to extend the authorization of the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act. This Act has served as the cornerstone for federal funding for Lake Tahoe since the original law passed in 2000, helping deliver millions in federal funding for environmental protection and habitat restoration programs.

FCC emergency broadband program to help households starting Wednesday

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rolled out the $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit Program Wednesday. The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an FCC program to help families and households struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, virtual classrooms, and so much more.

Charter Communications, a supplier of internet services to South Lake Tahoe residents and millions of others in the 41 states it operates in, announced its participation in the program.

New South Lake Tahoe assistant city manager to start June 1

Barton Health to conduct wildfire evacuaton drill for continued emergency preparedness

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is currently accepting applications for appointment to the Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) Advisory Board.

South Lake Tahoe area blood drives making it easy to donate

There are a few opportunities to donate blood in the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline area over the next two months.

Friday, May 14: Vitalent will be in the South Lake Tahoe community blood drive on Friday, May 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Parks & Recreation Gym, 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd. Donors will receive a $5 Amazon gift card which is redeemable via email.

Forest Service to start selling Lake Tahoe fuelwood permits May 18

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will begin issuing personal use fuelwood permits on Tuesday, May 18, 2021. To obtain a permit, give them a call at 530-543-2600. Leave a message with your name and phone number and they will get back to you at their earliest convenience.

Permits have specific conditions and complete information will be provided when the permit is issued. Maps to designated cutting areas will also be provided and must be in the permit holder’s possession along with the valid permit when cutting.

TRPA divies up 232 building allocations among counties in Lake Tahoe Basin

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - It is allocation season again, the one time every two years when people who are on "the list' have the opportunity to build a home on their vacant lot in the Lake Tahoe Basin. One may remember the days in the 80s when people would camp out in line so they could be first to get the golden ticket, but now people are selected off of a list created on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was tasked with curbing development in the Lake Tahoe Basin over 50 years ago.

Woman airlifted to Reno after US50 rollover; Baby in car seat treated and released

A woman was airlifted to Renown Medical Center in Reno after a single-vehicle rollover on U.S. Highway 50 at Camp Sacramento Sunday.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) South Lake Tahoe office, at approximately 12:14 p.m. May 9, a 26-year-old woman from Grass Valley was traveling west in a 2009 Pontiac Sebring when she rolled her vehicle. Just before the crash, the CHP has received calls about the Sebring being driven recklessly.

Upon impact, the unrestrained driver was ejected. She was transported with serious injuries according to the CHP.

North Tahoe/Truckee ‘Envirolution’ Club get Raley's leadership to cut down on use of plastic

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Lake Tahoe has big problems that are in small plastic pieces. To support efforts to reduce plastic waste, students from environmental clubs at four high schools in the region partnered with staff from local nonprofits to learn about plastic reduction programs and how they can help Take Care of Lake Tahoe. Cal Fire suspends all outdoor residential burn permits in El Dorado and Amador counties

Cal Fire has suspended all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Areas of Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, and San Joaquin counties just a week after allowing homeowners to get the permits. Starting at 12:00 a.m. Monday, May 10, the ban goes into effect due to the increasing fire danger posed by dead grass, dry brush, and live vegetation combined with hotter, drier conditions in the region.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Breezy north winds will be in the Lake Tahoe Basin into Monday. Then, temperatures will warm to well above normal through Friday as
high pressure overspreads the Great Basin. Unusually dry air will allow for good cooling at night, however. Pacific low pressure could bring breezy winds, cooler temperatures, and a chance of showers this coming weekend but forecast confidence is fairly low this far out, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Planning Commisson set to vote on conversion of old storage units to tourist accomodation units

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Planning Commission has an item on their agenda Thursday that will discuss an application for a special use permit and design review proposing to convert an existing 3,300 square foot commercial building to four tourist accommodation units that would be named Camp Tallac.

The 14,810 square foot property at 839 Tallac Avenue in the Al Tahoe neighborhood has been used commercially for years and has an aging storage unit business along the road.

El Dorado County supervisors to discuss options to end clustering of vacation rentals

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - At their May 11 meeting, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will consider options to addressing Vacation Home Rental (VHR) clustering in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Staff will present 300-foot, 500-foot, and 1000-foot buffers around existing VHRs. The 1000-foot buffer would be considered around homes that sleep 12 or more occupants.

Public input is welcome at the meeting during the open forum format. This item is scheduled to be considered no earlier than 1:30 p.m.

U.S. Coast Guard urges public awareness of illegal charter boat operations

The Coast Guard anticipates increased recreational boating traffic this summer and encourages the public to ensure charter vessel captains are licensed and Coast Guard certified before booking a charter.

Advertisements for these boat rentals and charter trips portray inexpensive excursions that often put the public’s safety at risk and the Coast Guard has cited illegal charters in California for failing to have a credentialed mariner, not having enough life jackets aboard, and overloading boats.

Roadwork scheduled around Lake Tahoe for week of 5/9 - 5/15/21

Several different agencies have roadwork projects around the Lake Tahoe Basin from spring to fall. Each week we publish projects planned by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the County of El Dorado, and the City of South Lake Tahoe. New fire chief named for North Tahoe Fire Protection District

The North Tahoe Fire Protection District has announced the appointment of Steve Leighton as its new fire chief.

Chief Leighton was appointed by the Board at its April 27 meeting. He replaces the retiring Chief Mike Schwartz, who served as North Tahoe’s Fire Chief since 2012.

Did you feel it? 4.87 magnitude earthquake near Truckee

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been a series of earthquakes near Truckee and Donner Lake tonight, with the biggest, so far, measured at 4.87 magnitude.

The University of Nevada Reno Seismological Lab is reporting the 9:35 p.m. earthquake at 5.35 m, but the US Geological Survey (USGS) has it measured at 4.87 m, occurring eight miles north of Donner Lake.

It was followed by a 2.98 m 10.5 miles NNW of Donner_Lake at 9:37 p.m. and a 1.4 m at 9:52 p.m.
