South Lake Tahoe man arrested after alleged hit and run collision
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/29/2021 - 10:57pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On the afternoon of May 29 the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a report of a hit-and-run collision on US-50 near Motel 6. The suspect fled the scene.
The victim in the collision was transported to Barton.
Witnesses said the suspect was seen driving erratically while fleeing into the State streets near Tahoe Keys Blvd.
SLTPD Officer Roesch located the suspect vehicle at the dead end of Wyoming Avenue with extensive front-end damage, unoccupied.
South Lake Tahoe City Council's last remote meeting on Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If all goes according to plan, the second South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting of the month n June on the 15th will be held in person in the council chambers. It will be the first meeting held at City Hall since the pandemic started over a year ago, and it will be an evening meeting.
They will follow the Planning Commission who has a June 10 public in-person meeting scheduled.
On June 1, City Council will meet remotely at 9:00 a.m. Their agenda includes:

Through education, that is a possibility.
"Swim Smart, Swim Safe: know the dangers of cold water" is the message that came from the agencies responsible for boating and water safety on Lake Tahoe in 2016 and it is never a message that should go away.
South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue reminds public of charcoal fire restrictions at some dwellings

Single homes and duplexes can have a charcoal barbeque but apartments and condominiums may not have open flame cooking devices on decks or balconies unless they are protected by an automatic sprinkler system.

June lottery for up to 12 new Lake Tahoe pier allocations

A maximum of 128 private piers and 1,486 private moorings will be allowed along the shore of Lake Tahoe, with allotments awarded through periodic lotteries until the cap is met.
Every two years, TRPA can permit up to 12 new piers in the Tahoe Basin, with a preference for multiple-parcel, shared-use piers. Through the lottery,
Douglas County Sheriff's Office says homes, offices and a juvenile struck by BBs

Between Tuesday, May 25, and Friday, May 28, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) says suspects in a dark-colored SUV with Texas license plates were shooting from the vehicle. A juvenile was also struck by a BB while walking home from school.
According to DCSO, they believe at least two suspects have been in the SUV.

El Dorado and Amador County wines shine at inaugural Foothill Wine Festival competition
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/28/2021 - 4:01pmThe first-ever Foothill Wine Festival Competition was held in Folsom on May 15. It was open to all wines bearing labels from Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Mariposa, Nevada, Placer, and Tuolumne counties.
The inaugural competition crowned Skinner Grenache Blanc from El Dorado County as the best white with 100 points; Amador Cellars Estate Tempranillo was voted the best red; Gwinlan Estate from Fairplay was crowned the best sparkling wine with their 2018 Estate Brut, earning 98 points; and best dessert wine honors went to the diVittorio Merlot Port from El Dorado County.

Included in that traffic are beachgoers, many turning off the highway into the Round Hill Pines Resort with a posted speed of 45 mph. The left turn for eastbound drivers is a dangerous one since there is no dedicated turn lane and at the top of a vertical low-visibility curve.

The University of Nevada seismological lab recorded a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in the same area as the recent cluster of quakes, north of South Lake Tahoe and east of Glenbrook, right in the middle of Lake Tahoe. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has recorded the quake at 4.1 magnitude. It was located just 1.2 miles below the surface, according to USGS initial reports.
There was also a 2.8m quake at 4L59 a.m. Friday.

North Tahoe Fire and Meeks Bay Fire Protection Districts prohibit all open burning and recreational fires
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/27/2021 - 6:06pmNORTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD), Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD), and Alpine Springs CWD jurisdictions have activated local fire restrictions by suspending all solid fuel recreational fires and open burning. The suspension takes effect Monday, May 31, and will remain in place through the remainder of fire season.
This announcement follows actions that triggered their decision - both CalFire AEU Unit and CalFire NEU Unit suspending all burn permits for the season in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Nevada casinos "win" $1.03B in April, South Shore $21.7M

This monthly report of Nevada's non-restricted gaming licensees for the month of April 2021 does not compare to the previous year's activity as normal due to the closure.
The Gaming Control Board (GCB) reported a total “gaming win” of $1,039,444,911 for the month of April 2021. In its monthly report, GCB figures show the casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a "win" of $21,760,733. Both of these figures are down from last month.

$116.5 million vaccine incentive program unveiled in California

This vaccine incentive program is designed to motivate Californians to get their vaccination leading up to the state’s reopening on June 15. The incentives aim to give an extra nudge to those who still need to get vaccinated against COVID-19, especially those in hard-to-reach communities, while also thanking everyone who has already been vaccinated.

All cubs are born in January or February and known as the "cub of the year" if from the current year while the cubs born last season are "yearlings."
Memorial Day is known as the official opening day of summer and with the COVID-19 restrictions being loosened and the forecast being a nice one, many campgrounds are opening and visitor numbers are increasing in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

COVID put a delay on the project because the delivery of materials for the precast concrete boardwalk system was delayed. The Houston, Texas concrete plant contracted for the project had been directly impacted by the pandemic.

And during those two Sundays, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has issued verbal and written warnings for making a right turn to head west on US50 during 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 16 and May 23. The right-turn ban will also be in effect on holidays including Memorial Day May 31.

Lake Tahoe Community College to hold traditional in-person graduation

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With COVID-19 cases falling and more community members receiving the vaccine, Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is able to host a more traditional, in-person graduation ceremony this year on its soccer field.
Commencement will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 25, with limited guests and college staff, and faculty on hand to celebrate the Class of 2021’s remarkable achievements. Students who graduated last year with the Class of 2020 are also welcomed back to this year’s ceremony to enjoy a more traditional event with their loved ones.
Former Truckee resident, who was a UC Davis and Olympic veterinarian, sentenced for tax evasion

Shubb to six months in prison, six months home detention and a $30,000 fine for tax evasion, Acting U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
Snyder was also ordered to pay $134,497 in restitution. He faced a possible five years in prison and $100,000 per each of the eight counts in the original indictment.

Two sent to hospital after Spooner Summit crash
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/24/2021 - 10:29amOn Sunday, May 23, at approximately 5:25 p.m., two cars collided at the intersection of US-50 and SR-28, sending both drivers to the hospital via ambulance.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP), the driver of a red 2003 Subaru Forester was traveling southbound on SR-28 and failed to obey the posted stop sign at the intersection with US-50. At that same time, a black 2004 Nissan Xterra traveling westbound on US-50 struck the left side of the Forester.
One of the drivers had minor injuries and the other had non-life-threatening injuries, according to NHP Tropper Hannah DeGoey
Men arrested during human trafficking operation in Stateline
Submitted by paula on Mon, 05/24/2021 - 9:56amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Three adult men were arrested in Stateline Friday after an undercover human trafficking operation was conducted by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), Reno Police Department Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT), and the Nevada Department of Investigation.
On Friday, May 21, 2021, DCSO arrested the three men who allegedly contacted undercover detectives believing they were underage minors for the purpose of having sex with the minors. The operation occurred in the casino core of Stateline, Nevada.
50th graduation class from Western Nevada College includes local residents

Collectively, the three drive-through ceremonies will honor 641 students who are approved to receive 669 degrees and certificates of achievement.
One of WNC’s largest Jump Start graduation classes — 140 — will be celebrated as these students graduate with an associate degree as they are graduating from high school.

Column: Depression screenings as preventative care

As health systems and communities focused on managing the pandemic, people began to forgo their normal preventive care. Additionally, mental health concerns due to isolation and other social changes as a result of the pandemic became apparent. Addressing mental health issues is a high priority for Barton Health and as it is frequently identified as an area of need in our Community Health Needs Assessment.

The event is the first Wednesday of every month beginning on June 2, 2021, and going through Dec. 1, 2021, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. The series focuses on making the CASE towards breaking through the barriers of stigma and the complexities of substance use.

On May 15, the next generation of tennis players was treated to head pro Dave Nostrant who orchestrated the various drills going on at each court, with club members volunteering their time with instruction.

The tournament will be held on Friday, June 11, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Anytime Fitness parking lot and will feature a public safety dual match between the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and East Fork Fire.
