Saturday night updates from Caltans and NDOT
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 7:47pmCaltrans representatives said Saturday has been one of the most challenging they’ve ever experienced due to the massive atmospheric river that hit California.
Here are some 7:30 p.m. Saturday updates:
Interstate 80 remains closed between Colfax and the state line due to whiteout conditions and dozens of stalled vehicles to rescue over Donner Summit. It most likely will remain closed for several more hours as the snow continues to fall at a steady rate.
Highway 50 reopened at about 5:30 p.m. but they will be holding traffic periodically overnight for avalanche control.
More Sierra highway closures due to poor conditions
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 5:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to deteriorating driving conditions, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has closed sections of the Mt. Rose Highway, Kingsbury Grade, and other mountain highways.
U.S. 50 from Meyers to Ice House Road remains closed due to high water levels of the American River flooding onto the highway.
Caltrans has closed parts of I-80 due to adverse conditions.
Stay off the roads tonight if at all possible. If a road shows open when you leave it may close before arriving so be tuned into up-to-the-minute reports.
Power outages due to storm in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 2:40pm4:30 PM UPDATE: The power outage at Lake Tahoe has grown to almost 20,000 Liberty Utilities customers. At 4:12 p.m., a large outage occurred affecting much of the South Shore. There is no estimated time of restoral of power.
NV Energy is also reporting multiple outages, over 26,000 customers are affected in Northern Nevada.
Most of the California Liberty outage is due to the power it receives from Nevada's NV Energy. Still no cause being released.
NDOT advises against driving in current winter storm
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 2:26pmWith an atmospheric river winter storm hitting northern Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is urging motorists to avoid driving during inclement weather. There have already been road closures and flooding roadways.
The snow and slush that have fallen on roadways throughout the day are leading to reduced traction. As temperatures continue to drop, ice has the potential to form under a light layer of snow on the roadway. Adding to the dangerous driving conditions is the potential increase of impaired drivers following New Year’s Eve celebrations.
All hands on deck in South Lake Tahoe; Sand bags still available in city and county

Winter Storm Warning in place until Sunday
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 12:50pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Things changed quickly from heavy rain warnings to flood and winter storm warnings. The forecasted 1-2 inches of rain for Saturday at Lake Tahoe is now up to 20 inches of snow around the lake.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning until Sunday, January 1 at 4 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches, except 2 to 3 feet above 7000 feet.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.
US 50 closed in both directions between Meyers and Ice House, some ski resort operations closed or on hold
Submitted by paula on Sat, 12/31/2022 - 10:10amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Travelers need to be aware of road closures before traveling in the Sierra. As the rain turned to heavy snow Saturday morning, rock and mudslides occurred.
US50 is closed from Sly Park to Meyers due to heavy flooding and mud at a few spots, mostly west of Whitehall. There is no estimated time of opening and motorists are advised to use alternate routes and expect delays. No detours are provided.
There is also a closure at Sly Park Road.
SR89 is closed around Emerald Bay.
Caltrans has no estimated time for the road reopening.

California snow water content 156% of normal to-date, 51% of annual average amount
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 3:07pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow year is off to a good start for 2022-23 after this month's snow followed by rain covering the mountains that feed into California and Nevada's water supply.
As of December 29, the snowpack in the central Sierra is at 154 percent of the average for this date, and 52 percent of the April 1 average. The snow water equivalent is 14.4 inches, the amount of water contained and collected should the snow melt. The state as a whole is close, with snowpack at 156 percent of the average for the date, and 51 percent of the April 1 average.
Weather forecast prompts cancelation of SnowTown Throw Down, fireworks still on
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 2:21pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lakeview Social of South Lake Tahoe planned a two-day end-of-the-year outdoor event, SnowTown Throw Down. Due to the forecasted wet weather for both days, organizers have had to cancel.
At this time, everything is still planned for Heavenly Village but wind and weather could impact their events. If they are able to safely operate, organizers said it's still "a go."
Christmas Cheer and Sierra-at-Tahoe staff helped by generosity from locals and Reno Toy Run
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 12:08pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the past 25 years, hundreds of Northern Nevada families have had a special Christmas thanks to the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs (COC) Toy Run.
The Reno Toy Run raised over $100,000 in 2022 and organizers were able to give $4.000 to Christmas Cheer, the only California-based group to receive a check. The Brotherhood Motorcycle Club is a COC member and presented the check to Christmas Cheer in South Lake Tahoe. Christmas Cheer had fourteen volunteers on-site daily to help take care of local families.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 11:43amThe big snowstorm that hit Lake Tahoe than began with rain on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, turned into classic Sierra Cement by nightfall. Local Bob Buehler took this photo and created a video that can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/784691631.
The storm didn't snow there and another few feet continued to fall on top. Then the temperatures dropped into the teens for several days causing everything to freeze up and turn into ice.
These images were taken along the east shore of Tahoe in Snug Harbor with Mt. Tallac in full view to the west-southwest.
Nevada gaming: South Shore Lake Tahoe win up 8%, statewide down over 7%
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/29/2022 - 9:34amNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,220,869,734 for the month of November 2022, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released today. This amounts to a 7.62 percent decrease compared to November 2021, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,321,592,551. For the fiscal year (July 1, 2022 through October 31, 2022), the gaming win has barely increased, up by .76 percent.
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
Combating fentanyl overdoses in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado and Placer counties

Douglas County asks residents to prepare for potential flooding
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/28/2022 - 5:08pmDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - County officials are informing residents to prepare for flooding due to storms moving through the region this Friday through Sunday. A Flood Watch is in effect for the Lake Tahoe Basin and Western Nevada from Friday morning through Saturday evening. Douglas County residents could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane, and Genoa Lane. Residents are encouraged to check the Douglas County website and social media channels for updates on flooding and road closures.
A wet end to 2022 in South Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, flood and storm warnings in place

At this time, temperatures are too warm for heavy snow levels except for locations above 7000 feet. Those hoping for more snow just have to wait a few days as the first week of 2023 should see lower temperatures and snow, especially January 4-5.

Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) staff delivered over 100 toys and multiple bags of food to Christmas Cheer, along with $375 in cash and $200 in gift cards for their annual Christmas distribution.
These donations will make a difference in the lives of many and bring some holiday cheer to those less fortunate in our community.

California has seized enough fentanyl to kill everyone in North America, twice
Submitted by paula on Tue, 12/27/2022 - 6:13pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The end-of-the-year numbers concerning fentanyl in California show the state's National Guard and other agencies have confiscated 28,765 pounds of the deadly drug in 2022. The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) said this amount is enough to kill every person in North America two times.
This is a 594 percent increase in the amount seized when compared to 2021.

NDOT reminds motorists to use caution when driving in rain

Add to that the fact that rain can reduce or impair a driver’s view of the road, and it’s easy to see that driving in the rain needs to be treated with extra caution.
Statewide, more than 175 crashes occurred in inclement weather between Oct. 1, 2021, and April 30, 2022, including two fatalities. Many of the crashes were due to unsafe driving in the rain, snow, and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

City of South Lake Tahoe opens two sandbag filling states in advance of storm

Public Works Maintenance Yard at 1160 Rufus Allen will not be providing sandbags and it will be at the Recreation Center at 1180 Rufus Allen Blvd., in the back parking lot. Both this location and the fire station are open 24x/7 and bringing a shovel is recommended since supplies are limited.
El Dorado County is also offering sandbags. They are at 1834 Santa Fe Ave. in Meyers

Family argument leads to one person allegedly shooting another in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 12/25/2022 - 1:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A family disagreement led to one man allegedly shooting another person on Friday night in South Lake Tahoe.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call on December 23 of a person injured by a gunshot in the 800 block of Gardner Street in South Lake Tahoe.
Upon arrival, they found one person with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. That person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries according to SLTPD Sgt. Brian Hannick.

A New Hampshire woman saw an idea posted on Facebook about how a group of friends when to a local restaurant, each committing to spend $50 each/$100 per couple. They chose an inexpensive restaurant so the tips for their server were much larger than those earned during a normal shift.
Tahoma cabin fire a reminder of importance of smoke detectors
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/23/2022 - 12:18pmTAHOMA, Calif. - During the recent blizzard at Lake Tahoe, Karen Nielsen found herself facing much more dangerous conditions than the heavy snow and high wind - fire.
On December 11 around 3:30 a.m., Karen was awakened by a smoke detector in her cabin. A short in the home's electrical panel had ignited the cabin's walls. She got out safely and was immediately supported by the kindness of her community.
Neighbors Ed and Lolly Miller "went above and beyond to help me out," Karen said in a social media post.

Free at-home COVID tests available
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/23/2022 - 8:53amThe U.S. government has authorized free at-home COVID-19 tests to be mailed to residents free of charge upon request. The tests started shipping on December 19.
With a rise of cases of COVID-19 this season, free tests are being offered via the mail to help curb the spread as families and friends gather for the holidays. There are currently 11 El Dorado County residents hospitalized with COVID-19, one in South Lake Tahoe at Barton, and two in the ICU.
Santa should have smooth sailing over Lake Tahoe, but wet week follows the holiday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/22/2022 - 6:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Santa shouldn't have any trouble with the weather over Lake Tahoe this weekend, but there will be changes after his appointed rounds.
A weak storm system will bring a little chance for light rain and snow showers and increased winds in higher elevations tonight and early Friday morning. Otherwise, dry and mild conditions will prevail through the Christmas holiday weekend.
More active weather returns next week through the start of 2023, with the potential for valley rain and mountain snow, along with plenty of wind.
Alpine County health official warns of Kirkwood celebration COVID outbreak
Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/22/2022 - 4:43pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Alpine County Public Health Officer Dr. Richard Johnson has issued a warning after multiple attendees at the Kirkwood 50th anniversary celebration have been diagnosed with COVID.
On Saturday evening December 17, approximately 200 people attended the party in the "old lodge" at the Kirkwood Mountain Ski Resort.
Johnson said it has been reported to his department that most attendees were the “old timers.”
NDOT continues to work on US 50 Corridor safety project - expects final plan at beginning of 2023

Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) is informing the public they will be holding a second public hearing on its intention to adopt a Fire Code Ordinance.
The District shall hold its second public hearing on the adoption of the 2022 Fire Code Ordinance at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the LVFPD Station 7, 2211 Keetak St, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wylder Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra History series with a Chautauqua presentation of George Whittell, The Accidental Conservationist on Monday, December 26 at 1 p.m.
Eastern Sierra historians David and Gayle Woodruff take on the characters of one of the wealthiest couples in the United States in the 1930s, who kept an African Lion for a pet, built one of the most beautiful pleasure crafts to navigate Lake Tahoe, entertained former presidents, and unintentionally conserved a large portion of Lake Tahoe lands for the public to enjoy today.
