1882 pounds of illegal fireworks confiscated at Truckee "bug" station
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/29/2016 - 10:38pmFire and law enforcement officers across the State are working together to confiscate illegal fireworks and get them off the street. In Placer County, an announced inspection of all vehicles going through the Truckee agricultural station netted 1,882 pounds of illegal fireworks, resulting in 20 misdemeanor citations and seven felony arrests.
In another operation, CAL FIRE joined a multi-agency fireworks seizure operation in San Bernardino County that resulted in the confiscation of 25,406 pounds of illegal fireworks, 51 misdemeanor citations issued, as well as two felony arrests.

El Dorado County Supervisors vote to change VHR regulations at Lake Tahoe

Missing was the heated public comments from the Vacation Home Rental owners as seen at South Lake Tahoe City Council meetings.
The changes for VHRs in the Tahoe side of the County (the Board of Supervisors at a duly noticed meeting shall have the authority to impose additional standard conditions applicable to vacation home rentals as necessary):
City of SLT wins lawsuit filed by Vacation Home Rental group
Submitted by admin on Wed, 06/29/2016 - 3:53pmA lawsuit against the City of South Lake Tahoe over the fees charged to those who rent out their homes as vacation rentals was won by the City in court this week. The June 23 verdict was received by all parties on June 28.
Judge Steven Bailey of the El Dorado County Superior Court issued an 11-page decision supporting the City's rights to charge fees to recover their costs in administering the VHR ordinance, including staff time for accounting, planning, building department, administration, code enforcement and other costs.
US Bank on Kingsbury Grade robbed Wednesday

The suspect is described a Caucasian male, approximately in his mid 20’s, 6 ft tall with blonde hair, wearing a black fleece type jacket and white shorts. He reportedly had a handgun.

Man found dead behind Barton identified as South Lake Tahoe resident

The decomposing body of 29-year-old Inyowen John Shelton, a resident of South Lake Tahoe, was found by people walking in the area Saturday. It is still unclear to law enforcement how he died and the death is called “suspicious.”
Many friends were leaving comments of disbelief and sadness on Facebook once they heard the 2004 South Tahoe High graduate was the man who died.
New chemical discovered at UC Davis may be new tool for depression therapy

A chemical discovered in a UC Davis lab may be a new, innovative tool to control depression. Studies involve an enzyme (soluble epoxide hydrolase or sEH) which is found in many species from bugs to humans. Research in animal models of depression suggests that sEH plays a key role in modulating inflammation, which is involved in depression. Years of research and discovery around this enzyme led from investigating insect biology to translating the basic science into a potential therapy for man.
Uber teams up with South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, MADD and CHP to prevent holiday drunk driving
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/29/2016 - 10:03amThe California Highway Patrol and Uber are joining forces to promote awareness about safe, alternative transportation options to drunk driving during the July 4 holiday weekend.
This holiday is one of the deadliest for drunk driving crashes. South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has partnered with Uber to prevent drunk driving in South Lake Tahoe.
Uber reached out to the nonprofits to make sure that Tahoe is safe, and to do so they are trying to get as many of their drivers out on the road as possible.
Firefighters gain on Trailhead Fire: 50% contained, burns 5,444 acres

As I walked through the front gate of the Revive Coffee & Wine, I instantly felt at home as the decor both inside and out matched my pinterest boards and crafty endeavors and the smiling and friendly staff was more than welcoming.
Revive Coffee & Wine is a new South Lake Tahoe business inside the old Pichetti Winery at 3135 Harrison Avenue, sharing the space with South Tahoe Standup Paddle.
The story behind the name "revive" is a special one.
"Let Tahoe Decide" group gathers enough signatures for Loop Road initiative
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/28/2016 - 9:08pmAn initiative prohibiting the City Council of South Lake Tahoe from approving or supporting the US Highway 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project received enough signatures to make it to the ballot in November.
The group, Let Tahoe Decide, was notified today that their petition gathered enough signatures to take it to the next step. Ten percent of the registered voters in the city, or 879 signatures, were required. El Dorado County Registrar William Schulz said his office received 1,496 signatures, and by verifying the required random sample, found enough valid signatures.
Deaths in Lake Tahoe attributed to cold water shock, not hypothermia

Drowning incidents from boating, paddling and swimming often share the same cause, "cold water shock," an involuntary gasp reflex caused by sudden immersion in cold water. Swimmers and boaters suddenly exposed to the cold waters of Lake Tahoe may experience rapid breathing, gasping, fainting, muscle failure and immediate risk of drowning.
Fire pit restrictions differ on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe

Restrictions differ between Tahoe Douglas Fire Department and the City of South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley Fire Departments.
Cal Fire and the U.S Forest Service also have fire regulations to be aware of.
Tahoe Village recognized for bear logic awareness efforts

“That is what Bear Logic is all about, thinking like a bear,” said Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) black bear biologist Carl Lackey.
On the South Shore, Tahoe Village Homeowners Association on Upper Kingsbury, and in Reno, the Caughlin Ranch Homeowners Association, have both been recognized by NDOW for their bear logic awareness efforts.

Raley's to remove certain sodas from their shelves

One year ago, they stopped the sale of tobacco products for the same reason.
The move will take away all flavors containing high-fructose corn syrup and artificial colors and flavors, including diet soda varieties.

July 6, 2016 - 6:30pm Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.
Patty Reed was 8 years old when her family joined the movement west to settle in California. As survivors of the ill-fated 1846 Donner Party, the tremendous hardships they endured left the family destitute. The little doll Patty hid in her clothing survives until this day.

Cave Rock tunnel project 25 percent completed

The road construction is to enhance driver safety along the east shore of Lake Tahoe, but with the massive, $6 million undertaking, there are minor traffic delays. With the upcoming July 4 holiday, NDOT is reminding drivers that they should anticipate these minor travel delays.
Sheriff investigating death of man whose body found near Barton
Submitted by paula on Mon, 06/27/2016 - 9:10pmThe El Dorado County Sheriff's office responded to a report of a possible dead person on June 25, 2016 at 4:21 p.m. in the 1200 block of Winnemucca Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.
Upon arrival, deputies found a deceased male in a moderate state of decomposition.
At this time, the case is being investigated as a suspicious death, and no identification or cause of death has been determined.
This is an active investigation and anyone with any tips can call Detective Simon Brown at (530)642-4717.
Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief retiring after 36 years of service

The board on the wall in Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit's office has a list of to-dos, things he had to accomplish before he could retire. On Thursday, June 30, he will be able to check them all off.
Ben Sharit, the Chief since 2011, will leave his post after being in the EMT, paramedic, firefighter business since 1980.

She remained missing for 18 years, a long nightmare for her family, her friends, and the town that grew to love her, even if they didn't know her. Then, dreams were answered on August 26, 2009 when she was discovered due to the instincts of two U.C. Berkeley Campus Officers.
Man's body found in Lake Tahoe near watercraft

On June 25, deputies El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to the call of an unresponsive man in the water east of Meeks Bay. There was an unoccupied jet ski nearby.
According to Bernadette Smith of Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the unidentified man was loaded onto the Placer county Marine 6 and transported to Cave Rock, CPR in progress during the ride, but without success. He was pronounced deceased.

For those visiting during the holiday and attending one of the firework displays over the lake, expect extremely crowded conditions and excess traffic. Because of the Basin’s high elevation, expect intense sunlight during the day and much lower temperatures at night. Bring sunscreen, a jacket, and carry a flashlight. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Styling themselves as citizen scientists, two young engineers, Eric Stackpole and David Lang, have created OpenROV, a small start-up based in Berkeley, Calif., that builds submarine drone kits. They hope to create a mirror image of the airborne drone craze.
One arrested after South Lake Tahoe woman shot during argument
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/26/2016 - 8:08pm9:00 a.m. update 6/27: Michael Anderson, 48, was arrested for felony domestic violence and for discharging a firearm in an inhabited dwelling. His 57-year-old girlfriend was taken to Barton Hospital last night with a gunshot wound in the abdomen. According to Lt. Brian Williams of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, her condition is unknown at this time, but it doesn't appear to be life-threatening.
She was able to speak to police Sunday night. Both parties told SLTPD detectives they were wrestling over a gun during an argument and "the gun went off."

LONG-TERM PROJECTS
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected by summer 2017.

TRPA recognizes contributions of Coe Swobe

Swobe is considered the “father of TRPA” for his bipartisan work to create the agency and its mission to conserve and restore Lake Tahoe’s environment. Swobe died on May 26, 2016 at age 87.
As a Nevada State Senator, Swobe brokered the landmark 1969 agreement between then Nevada Gov. Paul Laxalt and then California Gov. Ronald Reagan and the two state legislatures to create TRPA and the nation’s first environmental bi-state compact.

Did you feel it? Magnitude 2.5 earthquake recorded south of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/25/2016 - 2:26pmA 2.5 magnitude earthquake was registered Saturday afternoon 15.8 miles south of South Lake Tahoe, according to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.
The small quake was reported at 12:47 p.m. Elsewhere around the region Saturday, a 1.4 magnitude quake was registered 2.6 miles south, southwest of Genoa. It was recorded at 5:01 a.m. To the north, very small earthquakes have been reported over the past 24 hours, including a magnitude 1.1 located around 4.4 miles west of Mt. Rose.

July 17, 2016 - 3:00pm There will be a memorial gathering for Malcolm Pribyl on Sunday July 17th at 3:00 p.m. at the Meadow on Chinquapin Drive in South Lake Tahoe. The longtime resident of South Lake Tahoe passed away at the age of 69 on January 19, 2016.
Malcolm and his late wife Cindy (Cinderella) spent many years living in a home on the meadow on Chinquapin Drive.

Coachman Hotel holds grand opening this weekend

Gone is the stuffy front desk. Gone are plastic outdoor furniture and generic beds. What takes their place are locally made wooden furniture, fire pits, a bar that doubles as the check-in counter, and books, games and s'mores to make guests feel like they're just hanging out in someone's home.
Hopeful Henry: How much exercise should my dog get?

I frequently see young men riding skateboards or bicycles with small dogs running along beside them. How much strenuous exercise is good for little dogs and how can the dog owner know when he is pushing the dog too hard? Dogs will run really hard to stay up with their owner. How much is too much?

Mental health kiosks around South Lake Tahoe provide resources and information

Finding help for someone experiencing a mental health crisis can be difficult and it can also be a lofty task for a family member or friend seeking support for a loved one in need.
Six mental health kiosks have been placed through the community, each one with a highlight of local mental health services available along with educational materials. Brochures are in both English and Spanish, and updated regularly.

Central California near Lake Isabella has burned 43,460 acres, destroyed 150 homes, killed two
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 5:31pm3:00 p.m. update 6/29: Rain showers in the mountains above Bakersfield have helped fire fighters gain control of the Erskine Fire which has now consumed 46,684 acres near Lake Isabella.
The 1,743 firefighters at the scene have a containment line around 60 percent of the fire.
There are currently no evacuations in place and a re-entry plan has been established. 257 homes were destroyed with another 17 damaged.
Wildfire closes Hwy 395 at Lee Vining
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 4:33pm9:30 a.m. update 6/26: Firefighters have gained some control of the Marina Fire burning near Mono Lake and the town of Lee Vining. The 758 acre fire is 30 percent contained.
Highway 395 is closed at the town of Lee Vining on the south at the turnoff for Hawthorne, NV (Highway 167) on the north. However, California Highway Patrol is conducting one-way traffic escorts as conditions allow. Mono County Sheriff and Caltrans District 9 have worked tirelessly with CHP to implement this escort.

Which, before you start to open that mouth of yours, is most definitely is a sport. Any activity that requires you to go to a store and drop a thousand dollar on equipment is a sport. In this case soccer is not a sport, sorry Europe.
