Expect delays on Highway 89 from Tahoe to Truckee

Expect delays of up to 15 minutes over the next several weeks as a pavement rehabilitation project begins on Highway 89 between Tahoe City and Alpine Meadows.

The project consists of grinding down the existing highway and filling it with hot mix asphalt in order to improve the ride for motorists and cyclists and to extend the life of the roadway.

The affected area is from a half-mile north of the “Y” intersection with Highway 28 in Tahoe City to just north of Alpine Meadows Road.

Teichert Construction was awarded the construction contract with a bid of $1.28 million. Teichert will be working overnight shifts from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday using one-way traffic controls through the work zone. The contractor is allowed to start work Sunday nights but isn’t scheduled to next week.

The work should be completed by mid-September, but weather or other unforeseen circumstances could extend it.
