Prescribed burns continue in Lake Tahoe basin

On the North Shore - 10 acres at Burton Creek State Park.
On the East Shore - 32 acres at Sand Harbor, 28 acres at Spooner Summit and 200 acres at Camp Galilee.

Letters: Citizen questions move to not televise public comments
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 04/10/2016 - 8:11amAt the April 5 Council Meeting, Mayor Wendy David declared that comments by the citizens during the non-agenda portion of the Council Meeting will no longer be televised. It has been suggested that this was done to “prevent staff and others from begin slandered.” Except for Councilmember Conner’s request that this matter be placed on the agenda, the rest of the Council was silent. No motion, no vote, no agenda item, just a bare statement by the Mayor that the policy was changed.

Lake Tahoe reaches natural rim for first time in 300 days
Submitted by paula on Sat, 04/09/2016 - 6:50pmThe wet winter has proven useful for Lake Tahoe. For the first time in 10 months, the lake reached the its natural rim Saturday, April 9, 2016. This last happened in June of 2015 when the lake stayed at or slightly above the rim for a 5 day stretch between June 10th and June 15th. Prior to that, the lake had been below the rim since October 16, 2014.

Wet weekend should bring Lake Tahoe to natural rim

Snow levels will be rather high starting around 9,000 feet, dropping periodically down to 7,500 feet. The highest passes could become slick at times, but major issues are not expected.

City Council looks at possibility of not televising public comments on non-agenda items
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 9:17pmDuring Tuesday's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, the Council gave direction to the City Attorney to create a policy on how non-agenda item public comments are televised.
While the public is always invited to speak during the public comment period, the Council will look at not televising the portions that aren't about agenda items. They will also look at continuing to televise those comments made by non-profits and other groups to publicize their activities and events.

Lake Tahoe Ski Bum is hosting "Dual on Dynamite" at Sierra-at-Tahoe on Saturday, April 8. This is a dual format bump race that includes professional judges, discounted lift tickets and awards. All proceeds go to support the Sierra Avalanche Dogs.
Olympian and South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. DCSO: Veterinarian found dead in Carson City was sole suspect in lewdness investigation
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 5:16pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding the death of Carson Valley veterinarian Lance Gorrindo earlier this week:
“At the time of Lance Gorrindo’s death he was the sole suspect being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in connection to an active Lewdness with a Minor investigation. The identity of the victim is confidential by law and not subject to disclosure.”
Formal charges had not been filed against Gorrindo prior to his death, according to Carson Valley Times.
King Fire arsonist sentenced to 20 years in prison, $60 million in restitution
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 4:45pmArsonist Wayne Allen Huntsman was sentenced to 20 years in prison and ordered to pay over $60 million in victim restitution after he pleaded guilty Friday to starting the catastrophic King Fire in 2014.
Twenty years in prison was the maximum sentence Huntsman could receive for the guilty plea of three counts of Arson to Forest Land, admitted multiple enhancements for causing injury to firefighters and destruction of multiple structures.
South Lake Tahoe Police search for convicted sex offender
Submitted by admin on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 9:33amRafael Corea, a 61 year old former restaurant worker, has failed to register as a sex offender and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department would like to find him.
In 1995, Corea was convicted for lew and lascivious acts with a minor aged 14 or 15. As part of his conviction he much register as a sexual offender for the rest of his life, and he failed to do so in 2015 as required.
SLTPD detectives discovered Corea has moved out of his former residence in South Lake Tahoe and his current whereabouts are unknown, and they'd like the public's help in locating him.
29th Annual Booster Club Golf Tournament

Community collaboration helps to change the stigma of mental illness

Hosted by Barton Health, this year's forum participants shared the progress they've made on strategies for mental health and local service gaps that were generated during the 2015 event.
Jeanne Nelson from the South Lake Tahoe chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness) was very pleased with the outcome Thursday.

City proposes changes to the Vacation Home Rental ordinance
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/06/2016 - 9:03pmAs a follow-up to their February 16 meeting, the South Lake Tahoe City Council Tuesday looked at proposed changes to the Vacation Home Rental Ordinance that are meant to streamline City Code, remove duplicate language and make it easier to read.
Hilary Roverud, the SLT Deputy Director of Development Services, made the presentation that covered self-limiting occupancy, parking standards and apartments being used as vacation rentals.
County letter to Cal Tahoe JPA: We want uninterrupted EMS services
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/06/2016 - 8:04pmSouth Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston and the City's representatives on the Cal Tahoe JPA have repeated several times publicly that the City will not leave the area stranded without adequate ambulance service when they pull out of the Cal Tahoe JPA. Both Meston and City Councilmember Tom Davis, who sits on the JPA board, said the City will continue to supply ambulance personnel for at least 90 days after their original termination date of April 15 to ease the transition of EMS services to Lake Valley Fire Department.
Wayne Allen Huntsman may change not guilty plea in starting King Fire

Douglas County man jailed for domestic battery and firing gun inside home
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/06/2016 - 3:42pmA 57-year-old Douglas County man was arrested early Wednesday on suspicion of domestic battery and shooting multiple rounds from a firearm inside his home.
Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriffs Office responded to a call of domestic dispute with shots fired at the 3400 block of Tourmaline, south of Carson City at 4:00 a.m. on April 6. When they arrived they heard additional gun fire coming from the residence.
Soon after, Daniel Vanhooser came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident.
Rubbernecking leads to three car pileup on Echo Summit
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/06/2016 - 2:10pmA three car collision on Echo Summit Saturday, April 2 was the result of one driver not paying attention to the road in front of him on the second day of what happens to be Distracted Driver Month.
The California Highway Patrol had responded to an accident on Highway 50 just west of Old Meyers Grade. As they were taking care of that incident, a Subaru Legacy driven by Ray Garcia, 48, of South Lake Tahoe was heading west when he looked to the left to observe the previous accident.

Spring basketball team being formed on South Shore
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/05/2016 - 7:56pmTwo local basketball coaches have put together a new program, on that will give South Lake Tahoe area boys in grades three through eight the opportunity to take their game to the next level. The 10-week Spring Session goes until June 18.
Elevation Elite is putting together a team of players who will travel and participate in five different tournaments. The tentative schedule includes games at the Hardwood Palace: April 23, 30 and May 14, South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Tournament: May 28-30, and the Lake Tahoe Championships June 17-19, 2016.
Kindergarten Round Up for all perspective students

Registration for the 2016-17 school year is being held from May 2 through May 6 at all local elementary schools for children will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2016.
Children who will be five years of age between September 1, 2016 and December 2, 2016 qualify for Transitional Kindergarten (TK), a two year Kindergarten program located at Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

Elected county officials back Don Ashton for Chief Executive Officer
Submitted by paula on Tue, 04/05/2016 - 6:18pmSeven elected officials in El Dorado County submitted a letter of recommendation to the Board of Supervisors, backing Don Ashton for the position of Chief Administrative Officer. The county has been searching for someone to take the top spot after a series of people were in the position. Larry Combs came out of retirement to be the Interim CAO on June 29, 2015.
Ashton is the current Director of Health & Human Services.

Local ambulances in need of new heart monitors, purchase held up by JPA
Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/04/2016 - 10:17pmIt has been about 18 months since the Cal Tahoe JPA voted to spend $192,000 on badly needed EKG monitors for the nine ambulances that serve the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers area. As of March 31, not a dime has been spent due to a division between the two fire departments that are part of the JPA.
"I don't want public safety to get in the way of politics," said SLT City Councilman Tom Davis at Thursday's emergency JPA meeting. Davis is one of two Council representatives on the JPA board. The other is Mayor Wendy David.

Don Henley added to Harvey's Outdoor Arena 2016 lineup

Henley is on tour this summer in support of his recent Cass County album which was his first solo album in 15 years. He'll stop in Lake Tahoe on July 24 during his European and North American tour.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 04/04/2016 - 6:01pmJoshua Larsen, age 36 of Reno, was arrested by members of the Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes against Children Task Force (I.C.A.C.), on child Sexual Assault and multiple child pornography charges, including Use of a Minor in Producing Pornography.
Law Enforcement became aware of Larsen after a tip was provided to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s “Cybertipline.”

Construction details of this summer's project at Cave Rock will be revealed during a Lake Tahoe community meeting on Thursday, April 14 in the Zephyr Cove Elementary multipurpose room from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is hosting the public meeting to tell residents about the project that will enhance traveler safety on U.S. 50 in the Cave Rock area.
Pet of the Week: Bear

Public meetings on transportation changes in Meyers

El Dorado County is proposing roadway and multi-us path improvements for the Meyers community, and they are inviting the public to participate during three different outreach meetings on Friday, April 22.
The proposed changes are meant to make the transportation options more safe and attractive for those living in the area as well those visiting or passing through. One option already mentioned by Caltrans is the addition of a roundabout at the Highway 50/Highway 89 intersection to slow down traffic coming from Echo Summit.
