Red Flag Warning in place for Lake Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/26/2015 - 10:15pmThe National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe Basin as well as other parts of Northern California.
High pressure has settled in over Nevada and will remain through the weekend. Temperatures will be well above noromal with moisture slowly working its way North into the Sierra and Western Nevada.
Isolated thundershowers are expected to become more numerous over the weekend. The storms will begin dry, becoming a hybrid of wet and dry by Sunday, then primarily wet by early next week.

Lakeview Commons will be packed full of vendors, stand up paddle board racers, and excitement this weekend as South Tahoe Standup Paddle hosts the annual Race the Lake of the Sky.
This family friendly event attracts some of the world’s best athletes and has become known as the must attend flat water SUP race in the country.
The weekend races include a short course, long distance, team relay, grom races and the SUP Cross Sprint course as well as a race.

Juveniles arrested for vandalism of South Lake Tahoe schools
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/26/2015 - 8:56amTwo juveniles, ages 14 and 15, were arrested for vandalizing South Tahoe High and Mt. Tallac High Schools. The incidents occurred in May and June in the rest rooms at both schools, the STHS football stadium and on the siding of the school.
The South Lake Tahoe Police Department says there are more arrests to be made.
At the end of May and beginning of June of this year, kids broke into the rest rooms, started fires with paper towels and toilet paper and destroyed the interiors, tagged the exterior walls of the new wing at the school, and toilet-papered the football stadium.

South Shore casinos have net 'win' of $16,150,457 in May
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/26/2015 - 6:56amThe Nevada Gaming Control Board released their May casino win/loss figures today, and casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a net 'win' of $16,150,457 in May, down 6.76% from 2014.
The local casinos experienced a "win" of $16,150,457. This amount is down 6.76% from May of 2014.
For the fiscal year, the South Shore is up $6,184,822 over last year (the fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30).
When reviewing the whole state of Nevada, the downtown Las Vegas did the best with a 15.45% increase in gaming win. The South Lake Tahoe casinos had the biggest percentage of loss.
South Lake Tahoe has record heat in forecast
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/25/2015 - 11:34pmWhile the Sacramento valley sees record temperatures well above 100, South Lake Tahoe may also break a record high temp on Friday, June 26.
The forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) is calling for 88 degrees, just above the record high of 87 the South Shore had in 1981.
Saturday should tie the record of 87.
Accuweather.com's extended forecast shows South Lake Tahoe has a chance to break all records over the July 4th weekend. They are calling for 95 degrees on July 3 and 4.

Pony Express Re-Ride through South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/25/2015 - 10:02pmThe romantic drama surrounding the Pony Express has made it a part of the legend of the American West. It lives on in an annual re-enactment that is taking place June 15 - 25, 2015.
On Monday, June 15, a rider left St. Joseph, headed for the same destination, and long the same trail, as riders were 155 years ago. They expect to be in Sacramento on June 25 at 11:30 a.m. As of Sunday, June 21 at 9 a.m., the rider was in Sandy, Utah.

Drought, fires and sage grouse dominate Western Governor’s meeting

With the fire season ramping up and temperatures starting to soar, drought and fire dominated the discussion at the Western Governors’ Association annual meeting being held this week at Incline Village on the shores of Lake Tahoe.
Gov. Brian Sandoval, who has chaired the group for the past year, made drought his signature initiative, bringing together water experts and managers to develop best practices for water management and drought preparation.

Skies of South Lake Tahoe to be used for Marine training

South Lake Tahoe is the optimal training location for the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 out of Camp Pendleton, CA. The high altitude will better prepare the Marines for future missions, such as the recent humanitarian relief efforts in the mountains of Nepal.
Two South Lake Tahoe women win TRPA Lake Spirit Awards

During Wednesday's Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's Governing Board meeting, the two South Shore women were given the Lake Spirit award along with a family and person from the North Shore. The award has been given to "real people making real progress" at restoring Lake Tahoe since 2011.

The community has been very vocal in recent months about wanting to keep the buildings for the historical value. The Lake Tahoe Historical Society has heard from a group would is interested in buying the property, though it isn't for sale.
Barton Auxiliary giver $13,500 to local students

July 6, 2015 - 10:00am Tahoe Arts Project will be bringing the Missoula Children’s Theater back to Tahoe the week of July 6-10. Auditions will be held for the Missoula Children's Theatre (MCT) production of Aladdin on Monday July 6 at the South Tahoe Middle School Multi-Purpose room from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Those auditioning should arrive at 10:00 a.m. and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

Cycling races to cause delays on Lake Tahoe area highways
Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/24/2015 - 7:42amSections of State Highways 49, 70, 89 and 267 in the Sierra will be utilized during USA Cycling Amateur National Championship on Wednesday, June 24, and motorists are advised to expect delays throughout the day.
There will be seven races for the various age groups starting at 7:30 a.m. and concluding at about 8 p.m.
Washington Fire now 56% contained; 17,787 acres burned

Firefighters made a lot of progress on the fire lines at the Washington Fire south of Markleeville on Monday, gaining containment of 56% of the perimeter. So far, 17,787 acres have burned.
The lightning caused fire grew quickly a week ago, from 30 acres on June 19 to 6,500 acres by June 21.
At one time, over 1,100 fire personnel were working on suppression of the fire. Those numbers were reduced today to 860 as containment grew.

2. Yes, our beautiful lake is a little lower, but with a depth of 1,644’, a loss of one foot over the next 4 months really isn’t that much. There is still lots of water left to play in!
3. This is a great time to explore the other water sport options since it may not be perfect for motorboats and jet skis. Plenty of places to rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.
Smoke starting to creep into Lake Tahoe basin
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/23/2015 - 7:22pmFirefighters on the Washington Fire lines south of Markleeville enjoyed lighter winds as they fought the flames on Tuesday, but the winds were just strong enough to push some smoke into the Lake Tahoe basin.
Temperatures near Markleeville were 81-85 degrees with winds in the fire area moving up slope/up valley at 5 mph to 10 mph. Ridge top winds were light in the morning.
Calm winds are expected for the rest of the week with temperatures in the 90s.
There is a slight chance for thunderstorms and showers through Monday, June 29.

Skyland residents recently took part in a neighborhood fire drill, being told they had to evacuate their homes in 10 minutes.

Put on your ruby slippers and come to the Emerald City Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27 as the Sierra Tahoe Children’s Theater presents “The Wizard of Oz.” The production will be held at the TADA Viking Theater at South Tahoe High School.
The stars of the play will be children between the ages of 5 and 14 who have been participating in the two week musical theater workshop, Sierra Tahoe Children’s Theater.
This year’s workshop was attended by over 80 children who were divided into two casts for 4 performances.
Scheduled power outage in Markleeville postponed due to fire
Submitted by paula on Tue, 06/23/2015 - 4:34pmLiberty Utilities has cancelled the planned power outage scheduled for parts of Alpine County due to the current Washington Fire in the Markleeville area.
The outage was scheduled for June 24th and July 1st to allow Liberty crews to replace some power poles in the area.
Liberty will notify its customers when this necessary maintenance will occur once new
dates have been scheduled.

There are three fire district jurisdictions just in South Lake Tahoe, along with the U.S. Forest Service, and they all have different rules concerning the backyard fire pit. One thing they all do share is for residents and visitors to be smart about fire and to not be careless.

Barton unveils new billing services

The new Price Estimator Tool gives patients an estimated cost for a planned surgery or medical imaging service at Barton Memorial Hospital. It allows patients to financially plan for a procedure and simplify their billing process by knowing their estimated costs prior to a procedure.

If you are a water lover in Tahoe (SCUBA diver, paddler, swimmer, beach goer, or boater) and want to help ensure Lake Tahoe’s waters stay clear and pristine, then 'Eyes on the Lake' is for you.
Volunteers will learn how to identify plants in the classroom and in the field. Help protect the Lake while you play.
Lake Tahoe road work schedule for June 21 - June 27

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the junction with State Route 89 to 2nd Street in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday for gas line relocation work. Eastbound motorists can also expect the right shoulder closed at the same location from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for trenching.

Tonight - Mostly clear, with a low around 44. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.
Monday - Sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Monday Night - Clear, with a low around 44. West wind 10 to 15 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.
Dense Smoke Advisory issued for area south of Minden/Gardnerville

Dense smoke is expected in Smith Valley, Mason Valley, and Antelope Valley. Other areas may also be impacted by smoke.

The warning is in effect until 5 a.m. Monday. Visibility is at 1/2 mile to 1 mile.
Woman left on side of Highway 89 after ordeal
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/21/2015 - 5:17pmA 24-year-old woman from Folsom, CA was found on the side of Highway 89 near Tallac Creek Friday evening after bailing from the car of her boyfriend.
A concerned passerby saw the woman, who was bleeding, and called authorities. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded at 9:09 p.m.
History Sunday: The Pony Express Rides Again
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/21/2015 - 9:43amEven though it lasted just 19 months, the Pony Express played an important role in the western expansion of the United States. The Pony Express was the most direct and practical means of east-west communications prior to the telegraph.
With the threat of the Civil War there was a need for faster communication with the growing number of people living in the West. Three men understood this need (William H. Russell, William B. Waddell, and Alexander Majors) and created the Pony Express.
Cycling celebrated in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/20/2015 - 9:53pmCycling in South Lake Tahoe was the focus of the second Annual Cycle Celebration on Saturday. Kids both young and old were at the Heavenly Village to participate in a Bike Parade, Bike Rodeo, Bike Tune-Up station and informational booths.
The celebration wrapped up the two-week long Tahoe Bike Challenge where hundreds of people got out of their cars and biked to school, work and for play.
During Saturday's activities, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition honored the Town of Truckee and Karen & Pete Fink for their contributions to cycling in the region.
Learning to be Fire Safe in South Lake Tahoe

The Wildfire Safety Expo was held Saturday in South Lake Tahoe, and kids and adults alike learned not only fire safety tips, but were able to interact with the multiple agencies in the area that fight and prevent fires.
Also on hand at the Expo were law enforcement, TRPA, the City of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Humane Society.
Red Flag warning for Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/20/2015 - 7:10pmThe National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity in effect from 12:00 p.m. through 10 p.m. Sunday for the Lake Tahoe Basin and parts of western Nevada.
They are calling for winds southwest to west at 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, with two to four foot waves on Lake Tahoe. These are hazardous conditions for kayakers and paddleboarders.
This combination of gusty winds and low humidity will create conditions that could promote rapid fire growth.
Alpine County fire figures updated again: 16,543 acres burned

The fire figures were updated this afternoon. At 8 a.m. they report almost 16,000 acres, then downsized a bit at noon to 13,562 after analyzing infrared reports. The 1:35 p.m. update is as follows:
The Washington Fire is actively burning. It is spreading due to both fuel-and-slope-driven forces and in some some drainages off of the East Fork Carson River. It has also spread to the north and to the east.
Fire is burning in hazardous and inaccessible terrain and approaching an increasing number of structures and impacting travel corridors.
Standoff at the Tahoe Keys Marina ends with arrest of suspect

More details of Saturday's arrest have been released by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
As the pursuit of a car driven by 35-year-old Cory Pearson of Sacramento and South Lake Tahoe ended at the Tahoe Keys Marina, officers were able to establish a perimeter around his vehicle which had been reported stolen in Lakeland Village. Pearson yelled to officers that he was armed with a gun and threatened to use it if anyone approached. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) SWAT Team and Crisis Response Team were called to assist.
Years of water conservation have helped South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/19/2015 - 10:12pmAs one can imagine, Donielle Morse has been very busy lately. As the Water Conservationist specialist for the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD), Morse spends her days informing, teaching and keeping up on the new state water mandates.
Drought or no drought, water conservation is necessary and its the reason South Lake Tahoe is faring better than most communities in the West. Since 2007, local water users have cut back 27% of their annual water usage.
Camp for kids opens at the top of Heavenly Mountain Resort

After the campers went up the mountain on the 2.4 mile long gondola ride they enjoyed a day of high ropes, challenge courses, team building hiking, relay games, conservation education, nature crafts, scavenger hunts and much more.

Learn how you can be fire safe in your home and community at the Wildfire Safety Expos in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, June 20.
Agencies will be on hand to provide information on creating a home evacuation plan,preparing for fire, creating defensible space around your property and more.

Organizers of the annual South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade scrambled to remove the roadblocks which caused them to announce earlier this week the event was canceled.
"I had a meeting this morning, and partially due to the public pleas to make it work, we were able to resolve the problems and I am happy to say the parade is on," said JoAnn Conner, owner of Golden Bear Events who is the sponsor of event.
