“The course of true love never did run smooth," wrote William Shakespeare in his most famous comedy, 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream.' Fans of the Bard are in for a treat as talented South Tahoe High students bring back their hit play to the Valhalla Boathouse Theater.
The play will be presented with a Tahoe Twist by Tahoe South's acclaimed young adult theatre and promises to keep you in stitches. Director Nannette Niven has a cast of 20 including Bjorn Hedqvist, Stephanie Hernandez, Zoe Greco, Tyler Martin, Steve Huerta, Zane Brady, Hunter Turney and Jered Stowell.
Remains found on Spooner Summit in 2014 identified

The human remains found in King Canyon near Spooner Summit in June of 2014 have been identified as Ryan Wallace Osburn.
At the time of his death, the 32-year-old Osburn was a Reno resident.
The remains had been subjected to heavy animal predation which required the identification of the remains by DNA analysis and comparison to family members.
South Tahoe High volleyball player competes in Europe

It's not every day a teenager from South Lake Tahoe goes to Croatia to play volleyball for the summer, but that is exactly what Kaitlynn Watson did. Watson, a senior at South Tahoe High, participated in the 11th Annual European Global Challenge Volleyball Tournament as the starting libero for the U.S. Westside, California U17 team .
2015 State of the Lake report released: A bluer lake is from reduced algae

Scientists have determined that Lake Tahoe’s iconic blueness is most strongly related to algae, not clarity. In a report released today from the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, researchers found the lower the algal concentration, the bluer the lake.
In the “Tahoe: State of the Lake Report 2015” report, research shows clarity is controlled by sediment. Blueness is controlled by algal concentration, which in turn is driven by the level of nutrients available to the algae.

On Monday, the U.S. Forest Service welcomed a Bombardier CL415 firefighting aircraft to the South Lake Tahoe. On Friday, it is already seeing action after being called out to the Kyburz Fire burning just west of Lake Tahoe.
WWII veteran was victim in Monday's fatal car crash on Kingsbury Grade

Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) has released the name of the 93-year-old man who died after a single car crash on SR207/Kingsbury Grade on July 20.
World War II veteran John Jacob Filas of Zephyr Cove was driving his Ford Ranger when it drifted off the road and crashed into a tree. NHP responded to the 2:44 p.m. accident. Filas was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center where he later died due to his injuries.
Kyburz Fire now 98% contained; 75 acres burned

The Kyburz Fire is burning about 25 miles west of South Lake Tahoe. It has burned both sides of Highway 50 near and around the American River. It started on Highway 50 near Whitehall.
10 a.m. update 7/27/15:
The Sand Flat Campground has reopened as firefighters can almost total control of the fire lines. They now have 98% of the fire contained.
An updated infrared look at the scene has again reduced the amount burned to 75 acres.
They will not be updating the fire command website after Tuesday as they transfer o a forest Type 4 organization.

There is nothing quite like rich mahogany reflecting off the pure blue waters of Lake Tahoe, and there will be plenty of it to see as over 85 of the world's rarest wooden boats come to the Tahoe Keys Marina as part of the 8th Annual Wooden Boat Classic this weekend.

The Washoe will re-unite at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe this weekend to honor their culture and heritage during their annual Wa She Shu It’ Deh Native American Arts Festival.
The festival features native arts and crafts, food vendors, basket-making, raffles, Native American dance and drum performances. It is held at Valhalla Grand Hall and lawn on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

NHP addresses spike in fatalities due to excessive speed

The Nevada Highway Patrol is encouraging motorists to slow down in order to save lives. Law enforcement from around the state, including the Nevada Highway Patrol, will be working around the clock to urge drivers and riders to slow their speed.
There has been a recent spike in statewide fatalities, and because of this, agencies aligned with Joining Forces will be focused on enforcing speed limit laws through August 10.

City Council addresses craft shows and outdoor displays

The South Lake Tahoe City Council narrowly approved a new temporary craft show ordinance and increased fee schedule during their meeting on Tuesday.
"Seems like overkill," said Councilwoman JoAnn Conner in her vote against the ordinance. "Its a tremendous amount of work for anyone who wants to come in and do an event and its a tremendous amount of work for staff."
Conner was speaking of the new ordinance which changes the rules for the eight temporary craft shows held annually in the city each year. She and Tom Davis were the two dissenting votes.
TRPA approves Tahoe Valley Area Plan

The Governing Board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency today unanimously approved the Tahoe Valley Area Plan the City of South Lake Tahoe created to guide community revitalization and environmental restoration in a district centered around the “Y” intersection of Highways 89 and 50.
93-year-old Zephyr Cove man dies in Kingsbury Grade accident

A 93-year-old Zephyr Cove man has died following Monday's single car accident on Kingsbury Grade.
The man, who's identity hasn't been officially released pending notification of next of kin, was traveling westbound on SR 207/Kingsbury Grade at when, for an unknown reason, the 2008 Ford Ranger pickup he was driving drifted off the right side of the road. The truck went through a dirt right-of-way and struck a tree.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to the 2:44 p.m. call near the road's intersection with Katherine Drive.

Dr. Scott Kellerman is in South Lake Tahoe to share information about the work he, and the Kellerman Foundation, have been doing in Uganda. Kellerman and his wife Carol have been working to empower the Batwa pygmies to break the cycle of poverty and poor health since 2001.

Slight change to end times of SnowGlobe

SnowGlobe will be able to have amplified music go later this winter in order to stagger the times concert goers leave the venue. With 15,000 people leaving at the same time, concert promoters said this would allow them to more adequately and safely accommodate the people leaving and not create long lines at the buses.
During Tuesday's City Council meeting, the council voted unanimously to allow the concert promoters to have amplified music in the tents only until 11:30 p.m. on December 29 and 30 and until 1:00 a.m. on December 31.
Senior legal seminars coming to South Lake Tahoe

El Dorado County Senior Legal Services, a program of the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, is hosting a series of legal seminars in South Lake Tahoe for seniors during September and October, 2015. The seminar series, entitled "Planning for the Future," provides information about financial and health planning. Individuals may attend the series or just one class. Reservations are not required. Students who want to apply for admission to the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy at Lake Tahoe Community College for Fall 2015 must attend a mandatory orientation meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Board/Aspen Room on campus.
Reservations are not required for this meeting, and anyone interested in the program is welcome to attend. Based on student demand, there may be a random lottery for available seats in the Fire Academy. Students will not be eligible for the lottery unless they attend this orientation meeting.

The final celebrity jets were taking off from South Lake Tahoe Tuesday, just as the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) welcomed in a Bombardier CL415 firefighting aircraft.
Nicknamed "Super Scooper" because it can scoop up 1,600 gallons of water from a lake and drop it on the front lines of a fire.
Marine aircraft training in South Lake Tahoe postponed

The Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training and Open House for the U.S. Marine Corps Squadron 303 has been postponed due to being deployed on a mission. A future date has not been scheduled at this time.
The USMS had previously been scheduled to be in South Lake Tahoe on a thirteen day training mission July 27 – August 8.
New Vacation Home Rental ordinance passes City Council

New campsites, bike path and entrance for Camp Richardson

The U.S. Forest Service will begin the first phase of their retrofitting of the Camp Richardson campground on July 21, something that has been in the planning stages since 2009.
During this first phase, they will remove approximately 250 trees in the campground on the north side of Highway 89. This portion of the project will last about two weeks. Work will be completed on this side of Highway 89 in October.
Phase two on the south side of Highway 89 is anticipated to begin in September 2015 and be finished by June 2016.

Beach wrestling has made it to South Lake Tahoe and everyone is invited to participate. Local wrestling coaches Ryan Wallace and Dave Borges are putting on a first for the area, the Inaugural Beach Wrestling Tournament will be held on the El Dorado Beach at Lakeview Commons on Saturday, July 25, 2015.
South Tahoe Stand Up Paddle and the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe are sponsoring the event which gets under way at high noon. Registration and weigh-ins begin at 11 a.m.

Long Term Projects
State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe’s West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

Dogs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is hosting their monthly Wag, Waddle and Walk event on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.
The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.
This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

The live lecture is at Taylor Creek Visitor Center's Lake of the Sky Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m. It is open to the public. Cost is a $5 donation which goes to the Tahoe Heritage Foundation.

Justin Timberlake makes the most of his inaugural ACC appearance

While his score may not have won the American Century Golf Championship, Justin Timberlake won the hearts of many fans at Edgewood Tahoe this week. The large gallery following him during the practice rounds and tournament was full of girls, teens and moms trying to catch a glimpse of the recording artist.
During Sunday's final round, Timberlake was partnered with NFL great Jerry Rice and Alfonso Ribeiro who is best known for winning Dancing With the Stars and for his role on Fresh Prince on Bel-Air.
Whittell senior wins Gene Upshaw Memorial Scholarhip

Mark Mulder wins American Century Golf Championship

Mark Mulder had a premonition on Thursday after playing his practice rounds at Edgewood Tahoe. "I'm going to win this," he said. "I was in kind of the groove and knew I had an absolute chance," he said of the American Century Golf Championship.
Too bad his parents didn't take advantage of their son's 8-1 odds to win at the Harvey's Sportsbook. The former Oakland Athletic's pitcher, and current ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst, made the premonition a reality by winning the 26th Annual American Century Golf Championship today with a score of 82.
Firefighters put out suspicious brush fire in Rabe Meadow

Fire crews are mopping up after responding to a small brush fire in Rabe Meadow on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters from Tahoe Douglas Fire Department (TDFD) and the U.S. Forest Service got early control of the fire which was burning in dry brush on Forest Service land just northeast of the bike bath.
The fire is under investigation according to Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. "Anyone with information is to call the Forest Service or TDFD via 911," said Guevin.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will be discussing changes to the Vacation Home Rental Ordinance on Tuesday that, if passed, will bring about changes to the permit review process, add criteria to be considered when a new permit is issued, and the addition of an annual renewal review.

This year, Hall of Famer Steve Young and former NFL coach Herman "Herm" Edwards joined the local community group for an hour of honest observations and questions and answers.
"It's fun to be with you," Young told the intimate group of Rotarians and their guests. "I feel comfortable here at home in 49er country. If I ever got into trouble I know you guys could hide me."

The following letter was sent to the Governing Board of Directors for the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. It's author gave it to South Tahoe Now for publication:
Dear Chair Beyer and Governing Board Members:
I am writing to you in support of your adoption of the Tahoe Valley Area Plan being put forth to you by officials of the City of South Lake Tahoe.
One Less Spark Means One Less Wildfire

With the passing of the 4th of July we find ourselves right in the middle of summer here in the Tahoe Basin. Locals and visitors alike recreating in many different ways, from camping to mountain biking, to boating, Lake Tahoe has something for everyone. This summer and particularly this summer due to continued drought conditions, it is important to remember just how fragile the Tahoe Basin is, and that there is a persistent threat of wildfire. Everyone needs to take steps to ensure they are being fire smart in everything they do. Doing the right thing, the wrong way can start a wildfire.
