SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe is inviting community members to join the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion in honoring all veterans this Veterans Day. The Veterans Day ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11 at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/06/2023 - 9:04pmEL DORADO COUNTY, CALIF. - Deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of High Meadow Trail on a call of multiple shots heard on Saturday, November 4, 2023. The caller said they'd heard about 100 shots fired. Upon investigation, the deputies found target shooters in the forest who were there legally and conducting themselves in a safe manner with a "good backdrop," according to the sheriff's office.
Some shooting is allowed in some areas of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

United Against Hate Week, which is recognized from November 12-18, is a call for local civic action to stop the hate and biases that pose a dangerous threat to the safety and civility of our neighborhoods, towns, and cities. Across the state, 100’s of cities and organizations are also taking a stand against hate by coming together throughout the week.

The requirement is at least three in-person, and up to two can call in remotely from a pre-disclosed location.

There will be a glimpse of winter starting with rain showers that will become more numerous during the day on Monday. Some snow may cause travel impacts over the Sierra Monday late afternoon and night. From Tuesday afternoon onward, including the Veteran`s Day weekend, relatively quiet weather is expected for most areas. A few mountain snow showers are possible on Friday.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches above 7000 feet. A dusting to an inch is possible for Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities.
Plan on slippery road conditions, delays, and chain controls. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. Allow extra time to reach your destination.

This is the most prestigious honor awarded by the DAR and given to individuals who are United States citizens by birth and who have shown extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service, and patriotism.
The recipients must have made unusual and lasting contributions to our American Heritage by truly giving of themselves to their community, state, country, and fellowmen.

Time to "fall back" as daylight saving time ends for 2023
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/04/2023 - 9:51amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Laka Tahoe has many seasonal markers, we're lucky that way. Winter, spring, summer, and fall are distinct periods of time (on average) and one more marker is the beginning and end of daylight saving time.
On Sunday, November 5, the clocks turn back one hour to get us back to standard time.
In 2018, Californians voted overwhelmingly to allow daylight saving time to be year-round and not have the "fall back" and "spring forward" time changes each year.
So why do we still have to go through this?

American Legion gifted new snowblower by Alpine Smith after burglary

The first call came from Christina Bicker who offered to donate money to a new one, and if the Legion needed more, she'd buy them the snowblower.
Special Olympics Team Tahoe Bowling begins 2024 season

With just a few weeks of practice to go, the team is getting ready for the Northern Nevada Special Olympics games in November. Held in Reno at the National Bowling Stadium, athletes will compete with others from Northern Nevada hoping to collect medals and reconnect with friends from other teams.

Emergency repairs continue on I80 next week

The weather forecast is expected to impact work for the week of November 5. As a result, crews are scheduled for mainly minor repairs.

On Thursday, November 2 at 5:55 p.m., Liberty Utilities experienced an issue with their underground infrastructure and power lines, causing the outage.

Zachary Thomas appointed as new director of development services for South Lake Tahoe

Most recently Thomas served as the interim director, following his being the City’s housing manager.
Zach has over 20 years of successful project delivery in the fields of affordable housing development, capital projects, project management, land use planning, environmental review, development review, and real estate development having worked with private, public, quasi-public, and non-profit institutions.

The change will start this afternoon into early Friday. The first wave is a relatively warm low-pressure system. Plan on periods of breezy winds along with light rain and high-elevation across the northeastern side of California and into northwest Nevada. Temperatures will remain mild and above average through Saturday, followed by a pronounced cooling trend into next week.

The motion to accept his resignation and termination agreement was passed 5-2, with Trustees Linda Gilkerson, Tony Magnotta, Carey Kangas, Katherine Dickerson, and President Susan Jansen voting yes to authorize Lewis’ resignation and authorize payments in accordance with his agreement. Clerk David Burns and Vice President Doug Englekirk were opposed.
"We're going to really miss you, Keith," said Magnotta during the meeting.

Douglas County commissioners to discuss future of Tahoe Township, VHR rule changes, new judicial center

The Tahoe Township Justice Court operates in Stateline, and the East Fork Township Justice Court is in the valley. Staff will present caseloads for each court. According to the agenda, Commissioners Hales and Gardner asked for the issue to be brought forward to make sure cases are distributed evenly, and to discuss the consolidation of the townships.

Tahoe casinos "win" figure $29 million in September
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/31/2023 - 10:47pmNevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,270,598,215 for the month of September 2023, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board's monthly report released Tuesday. This amounts to a 1.69 percent increase compared to the same month a year ago when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,249,470,5411. For the fiscal year, so far, the gaming win has increased by 2.91 percent with $3,883,670,986 in "win".
The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.
Snowblower stolen from the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe

An Ariens snowblower was stolen from the American Legion Post 795 in South Lake Tahoe, and they'd like to have it back. The red-orange snowblower was purchased by the Legion five years and it was still in great shape.
Commander Tom Millham said the snowblower was locked in the Legion's storage shed on site. Millham said the Legion learned the hard way that they aren't immune to thieves.
