Seasonal closure dates announced for USFS beaches and campgrounds
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/05/2023 - 3:58pmThe USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has begun the annual process of closing National Forest recreational facilities around the Lake Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many recreation areas and sites including beaches, campgrounds, forest roads, parking lots, and picnic areas.
Basic Vehicle Maintenance 101 taught at LTCC this month
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/05/2023 - 3:23pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A hands-on vehicle maintenance class is being held through Lake Tahoe Community College's Connect program on Saturday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The class is being taught by John Gomez of Tahoe Driving Academy and will provide students with the ability to learn on their own cars, something unique to vehicle maintenance classes. Gomez plans on taking participants to the parking lot during the workshop so they can learn on the spot on their own vehicle.
Nevada Bandits come out on top at Lake Tahoe Chill Out baseball tournament

Seven teams visited South Lake Tahoe to compete in the 13U baseball tournament at the South Tahoe Middle School fields. The Nevada Bandits hoisted the inaugural 'Chill Out' championship belt after a hotly contested, extra-innings win over the South Tahoe Chill Gold.

TRPA seeks feedback on transit around Lake Tahoe

TRPA, in its role as the Regional Transportation Planning Agency, performs an annual evaluation of unmet transit needs around the lake.
Pursuant to the California Transportation Development Act (TDA), the process seeks to identify any unmet transit needs and ensure those that are reasonable to meet, are met before TDA funds are expended for non-transit uses, such as streets and roads. Currently, all TDA funds are allocated to transit uses.
Vendors sought for Festival of Winter Lights in South Lake Tahoe

It will be held in the parking lot of the Lake Tahoe Historical Society and the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center.
This event will feature the museum's annual Holiday in History, Borges winter carriage rides, a lighted outdoor winter market, Santa's house and kids activities, holiday music performances, and hot food and wine.
Liberty Utilities postpones planned power outage in South Lake Tahoe

Businesses and residents near Rufus Allen Blvd would have been affected by the power outage.
Liberty Utilities had originally planned to message those in the area and leave door notices.
The planned outage will occur at a future date.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local artist, teacher, and muralist Matt Kauffman is having a one-man art show at the Lake Tahoe Community College Foyer Gallery. Titled "Paper Halo," the collection of art is a commentary on the things we value, and hold important.
"Sometimes the least meaningful things in life can occupy all of our attention and rob us of the joy from that which matters most," said Kauffman.
The two-month-long show opens with a reception on October 5 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The show runs through December 8.

The antisemitic hate speech that overwhelmed the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors' meeting on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, during the meeting's public comment periods was un-American, un-Christian, and does not and will never represent our communities. Hate is not welcome here.
Douglas County School Board special meeting with termination of superintendent on agenda

New water year underway, California prepares for a possible wet El Niño year

On Tuesday, the Department of Water Resources (DWR) highlighted how the State and its federal and local partners are preparing for the new water year that started on October 1. DWR said they are also preparing for the possibility of another wet season under strong El Niño conditions.

The award is named the Bob Baunhauser Excellence in Service Award in recognition of the longtime local man who exemplified service. He selflessly gave his time and resources to others, especially the children of the community, without any expectation of publicity or recognition.

Douglas County Community Health and Quad County Public Health are both holding flu vaccination clinics at Kahle Community Center on Wednesday, October 4.
Even though they are Nevada agencies, they will be accepting South Lake Tahoe residents as well as Nevada residents.
High-dose vaccines are available for those 65 and older in limited quantities at both events. If you do not have insurance, you will not be turned away.

Much of the week will be rather dry along with a general warming trend as the low progresses eastward. Temperatures will see a steady climb through the week after Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. The only wrinkle in the week will be a reinforcing shot of cold air late Monday into Tuesday morning across eastern NV. This will slow the warming trend by a day or so.

South Tahoe High earns WASC accreditation through 2029

Cold front bringing rain to lake level, chance of snow at upper elevations

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued south of Lake Tahoe, in Mono County.
The best potential for showers, even some high-elevation snow, will be from Saturday into Sunday.
Friday afternoon at Lake Tahoe will see mostly sunny skies with a high near 66. Southwest wind will be around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

It wasn't just El Dorado County's Board of Supervisors meeting this week, but it was also the government meetings of Sonoma County, Saratoga, South San Francisco, El Cerrito, Walnut Creek, Sacramento, Monterey, and the list is growing. The comments have harassed officials and disrupted meetings with hate-filled messages targeting racial and ethnic minorities, the LBGTQ+ community, and the Jewish community.

The suicide rate among people aged 10–24 increased 62 percent from 2007 through 2021. This has deeply impacted individuals, families, and communities.
Every person can play a role in helping to prevent suicide by knowing a few key things and where to get help.
Tahoe Forests Matter group wants support of Firewise and not thinning projects

The following statement was issued through public comment at the El Dorado County Supervisors and South Lake Tahoe City Council Meetings on 9/26 and at the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Board Meeting on 9/27. A similar statement was made on 9/21 at the Skyland neighborhood meeting regarding the upcoming “fuel break” project in that area.

Magnet School changes name to Meyers Elementary, Home of the Bears
Submitted by paula on Thu, 09/28/2023 - 8:38pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has announced the changing of the name of Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (LTESMS) to Meyers Elementary School, Home of the Bears. The new name is actually the same as the original when the school opened in 1967.
Keep Tahoe Blue volunteers turn out to revitalize a meadow and creek

Around her, a team of five is busy lopping pine boughs and carefully placing timber across a narrow stretch of Saxon Creek in the community of Meyers, mimicking the work of beavers who once lived there. If they’re successful, this “beaver dam analog” will help restore the creek’s natural, meandering course, filter out sediments that degrade Lake Tahoe’s clarity, and invite the beavers to return.
