2nd annual Witch Costume Paddle at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It’s that time of year again - the 2nd annual Witch Costume Paddle Session! It will be held on Saturday, October 7 at the Beach Retreat and Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. Last year over 200 people participated with at least 80 on boards and kayaks. Organizers want to make this year bigger and better.

South Lake Tahoe holds 9/11 ceremony at American Legion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Area first responders were honored during the South Lake Tahoe 9/11 ceremony held at the American Legion Monday.
"This is our opportunity to say 'thank you' as a united community," said the American Legion Post Commander Tom Millham. He recognized those in attendance from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Lake Valley Fire Protection District, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, Fallen Leaf Lake Fire, California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire, and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

Control of this one-and-a-half-acre Eurasian watermilfoil infestation in the iconic location will help protect the region’s ecosystem and water quality, according to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA).

Jeffrey Jay Kaufer was born May 26, 1951. Jeff passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a year and a half battle with cancer. He was born in Detroit, MI and his family relocated to Southern California when he was 5 years old. He and his brothers bounced between Thousand Oaks and Hollywood. A highlight from his childhood was getting Sandy Koufax to give him and his two brothers, a ride home after a game.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quiet southwest flow pattern will prevail across the region for the coming week which will result in seasonable temperatures, light afternoon zephyr breezes, and mostly sunny skies outside
afternoon cumulus development. Expect afternoon highs this week to warm into the mid and upper 80s across western Nevada with mid to upper 70s for Sierra communities, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Overnight temperatures will be on the mild side this week with lows around 5-10 degrees above average.

It is with great sorrow that on Monday, September 11th, we will be saying goodbye to our dear friend and brother, Hans Bonnicksen. He was a beloved brother, uncle, son, and friend. His heart was so kind and he was always there for anyone in need. It is unfortunate that the people so quick to lend a hand are often the ones who feel ashamed to ask for help in return.
Hans is survived by his sister, Ember, brother-in-law, Aaron, his niece, Ella, and father, William.

Annual 9/11 flag replacement ceremony on US50

For 23 years, Christopher "Chris" Sneed has climbed up a rock outcropping off of US50 above Carson City, Nevada to plant a flag in honor of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. He changes the flag annually on the 10th so there is a new flag to start off 9/11 with, giving the day a new beginning with the new flag.
This year, a crowd once again gathered along the highway to watch Chris climb the rock and change the flag. Granite Construction donated their time to provide traffic control and closed down the lane next to the rock to keep the area safe for attendees.

Lake Tahoe bear activity ramps up, increasing number of bears vs. vehicles draws concern

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two cubs who were hit by a vehicle in South Lake Tahoe about three weeks ago are on the mend, but their condition is concerning to many who have seen them. They were hit on Pioneer Trail, and the Bear League and others who responded have kept an eye on the two to make sure they are continuing to move around and able to get food.
Local urbanized black bear expert Toogee Sielsch said it's hard to see the bears moving around with obvious injuries, but as long as they can keep up with the momma bear they have a good chance of survival.
Alpine One crowned champions of 2023 LTCC Adult Coed League

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Alpine Carpet One defeated Guadalajara last month and was crowned champion of the 2023 LTCC Adult Coed League.
In its third year of existence, the league had 12 teams and more than 250 players in what is the LTCC soccer program’s biggest fundraiser.
The league's season ran from May to July, with playoffs in August. Teams are coed fo those 18 and over,with nine players and a minimum of four women on the field at all times.

Boil Water Notice for South Shore Recreation water around Fallen Leaf Lake/Camp Richardson

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Boil Water Notice has been issued for "South Shore Recreation" water which includes Fallen Leaf Lake, Camp Richardson, Valhalla, and Tallac Historic Site.
The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) water system was found to be contaminated with E. coli bacteria on September 8. These bacteria can make you sick and are a particular concern for people with weakened immune systems.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Challenge Day organization will be in South Lake Tahoe next week to conduct three-day-long programs at South Tahoe High School (STHS), and community members are needed to help each day.

Woman found deceased at South Lake Tahoe lakefront lodging property

9/11 UPDATE: The woman who died at Lakeland Village on September 7 has been identified as 62-year-old Jacqueline Cason. She was from the Oceanside, California area and formerly of South Lake Tahoe. The next of kin has been notified.
Detectives from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department are continuing to investigate and gather more evidence. Search warrants have been executed as detectives reconstruct activities from the evening Ms. Cason died.. The cause of her death has not been determined at this time and an autopsy is scheduled.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tourist Business Improvement District (TBID) covering the north shore of Lake Tahoe continues to yield results that benefit the community, the environment, and the visitor.
Launched in July 2022, an assessment fee was added to all TBID business transactions for those who provide any type of visitor service including food and beverage, and retail. The fee can be paid for by the business, or added to the customer's bill, and is paid by all who use the business, visitor or not. Depending on the zone the business is located in, the fee is one or two percent.
Invasive plant barrier installation complete at South Lake Tahoe marsh

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Agencies restoring the Taylor and Tallac marsh areas have completed the installation of bottom barriers to remove 17 acres of invasive plants as part of the comprehensive restoration of one of the last natural wetlands in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) announced this week that the collaborative project that began in December 2021 is one of the largest aquatic invasive species control projects ever undertaken in the Tahoe Basin.

Work first began in the summer of 2022 on the Tahoe Forest Products Saw Mill, which is still busy constructing its mill on Washoe Tribal Land behind the Topsy Lane shopping center — with work continuing throughout the night.
A year later, residents living nearby have started a petition asking for all nighttime work to cease which, according to Kevin Leary and Jim Turner of TFP, would only prolong the work.

On Sunday, September 10, Hope Lutheran Church will dedicate its Sunday service to Pastor Joel Martin in memoriam. Pastor Joel served as pastor at Hope from 2003 to 2014. Many have benefited from his dedication to his ministry. From building a local youth ministry to organizing ice fishing trips, Pastor Joel approached his ministry with great kindness, joy, faith, and above all else love. He is survived by his wife, Amanda, and two sons, Rowan and Ezra.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites community members and visitors to join members of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion for a ceremony to remember the victims of September 11, 2001. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sep. 11, 2023, at the American Legion Hall, 2748 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe. Light refreshments will be served.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting the public to take part in an online survey to provide feedback about proposed future improvements to US 50 on Tahoe’s east shore, including potential temporary test restriping of a section of highway lanes.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A group of South Lake Tahoe residents is organizing to get a residential vacancy tax on the ballot in 2024 and they will be starting with a kick-off event on September 13.
Starting at 6 p.m. at South of North Brewing, the event will include a film screening of “Room and Board: A Tahoe Housing Crisis Documentary,” created by North Lake Tahoe filmmakers and housing advocates, as well as a vacancy tax Q&A session. Letter: Concerns about new refuse collection plan in South Lake Tahoe

Dear Editor, Residents in the Al Tahoe Firewise community and throughout the Tahoe Basin have worked extremely hard to reduce combustible fuels on their properties in order to mitigate the risk of wildfires. Every spring and summer, with the help of South Tahoe Refuse’s current weekly pickup practices, we have cleared multiple bags or cans of pine needles and cones, vegetation, and tree limbs in order to protect our homes and the community from wildfires. This fuel reduction also qualifies our nationally recognized Firewise district for fire insurance discounts.
