Several rounds of snow storms in the Lake Tahoe forecast into March

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold and stormy period will continue through the end of February and into the beginning of March, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. They say to anticipate several rounds of snow at all elevations, leading to widespread travel difficulties in the Sierra. Periods of enhanced winds will make it feel that much colder. Bundle up and protect vulnerable populations and pets.
The Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4 a.m. Friday, then a Winter Weather Watch until Saturday, February 25 at 10 a.m.
El Dorado County supervisors appoint Measure S committee, say goodbye to CAO Don Ashton

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - During its meeting Tuesday, the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors congratulated Don Ashton as he bid farewell after serving 12 years of service with the County. He served as chief administrative officer for the last seven years.
The supervisors presented a proclamation recognizing Ashton's dedication to public service. It stated "Your leadership, integrity, and dedication to the employees and residents of El Dorado County will be missed,"
LTCC launches cross country and long distance track programs with hiring of new coach

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. —Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) has hired a seasoned community college coach and former student-athlete champion to launch and lead its new collegiate cross-country and long-distance track programs. Matthew Airola, a two-time California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) individual cross country and track & field champion with extensive coaching experience, will start at LTCC in February, with the program’s first competitive season beginning in August 2023.

2023 State of Nevada Mathematics Championship for grades 1-12

The 8th annual State of Nevada Mathematics Championship is open to all Nevada students in grades 1-12, regardless of past math competition experience or participation.
This contest is being hosted by the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno’s campus, and is sponsored by Microsoft. There is an online option for eligible students who are sick or more than a 2-hour drive away.
Trophies and medals are awarded to top performers at NNVMath's Annual End of Year Awards Dinner on May 20. Awards will be mailed to those unable to attend the awards dinner.
New Keep Tahoe Blue building in South Lake Tahoe to be environment and education center

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Those driving by the intersection of Lake Tahoe and Al Tahoe Boulevards over the past few months may have noticed the old office building at the corner under construction.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue) purchased the building to create a new environment and education center designed around opportunities for the public to learn, appreciate and take part in protecting Lake Tahoe.
Forest treatment completed to better protect Truckee from wildfire

The Glenshire-Brockway project, a 1,175-acre project to reduce hazardous fuels between Glenshire and Brockway summits has been completed. The project is a collaboration of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), the National Forest Foundation (NFF), and the Truckee Fire Protection District (TFPD).
The area is full of dense forest stands across both public and private lands. Crews thinned brush and small trees for wildfire mitigation while maintaining the more fire-resilient trees.
USFS seeking comments on proposal to complete restoration of Burke Creek near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) in partnership with the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District (NTCD) is seeking comments on a proposal to complete restoration efforts at Burke Creek and Rabe Meadow on Lake Tahoe’s southeast shore. The Burke Creek Rabe Meadow Riparian Restoration Project area is located near Stateline, Nevada. It includes portions of Rabe Meadow and the lower reaches of Burke Creek that run through the meadow and enter Lake Tahoe near Nevada Beach. Comments will be accepted from Feb. 21 through March 14, 2023.

Tahoe Fund receives $187,000 in dollar donations from guests of Vail Resorts

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Guests of Northstar, Heavenly, and Kirkwood are making sure that their time on the slopes is positively impacting the environment through Vail Resorts' EpicPromise Guest Donation Program. By donating a dollar when purchasing online lift tickets, season passes, lodging, and rounds of golf over the past twelve months, guests at these Vail Resorts locations have raised more than $187,000 for the Tahoe Fund to support environmental improvement projects in the Tahoe Basin.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pleasant conditions will continue through the holiday weekend, with the warmest temperatures expected Monday. An abrupt change happens Tuesday as an active weather period returns with a two-part storm that will bring high winds, snow, and cold through late week. It is looking like there will be another cold, snowy pattern returning at the end of February.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the first part of the storm Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Gusty winds with lighter snow could cause visibility issues.

Keystone of recreation within species conservation

Rumor has it that outdoor recreation and species conservation are at odds. Outdoor activities and infrastructure are often typecast as an inevitable threat to forest flora and fauna. However, a collaboration between the Forest Service and a destination ski resort is turning that stereotype on its head to protect a keystone tree — the whitebark pine.
Nevada DOT federal transportation funds grants available for nonprofits and agencies

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is inviting government and non-profit organizations to apply for federal transportation funds available through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).
Through April 14, applications will be accepted for non-traditional, community-based transportation projects that improve safety, expand travel choices, and enhance the transportation experience.
Eligible projects include planning, design, and construction of the following type of improvements:

Graduates of Western Nevada College’s (WNC) paramedic program were given a warm salute and send-off into a profession that makes communities safer with an important layer of emergency care that they provide.
The Paramedic Graduation Class of 2023 was recognized on Feb. 11 in WNC’s Carson Nugget Hall. A number of speakers took the time to honor the seven graduates, who included Ryan Baker, Tyler Elam, Garet Giovacchini, Sarah Harter, Rick Lopez, Adrian Lopez-Meraz and Jorge Negrete-Chavez.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After a rough couple of years with the pandemic, the third quarter of 2022 was a bright spot for South Lake Tahoe. Receipts from July through September were 29.1 percent above the third sales period in 2021. Excluding reporting aberrations, actual sales were up 27.3 percent. Aberrations are from delayed payments, audits of receipts, and other reporting modifications.
Douglas County opens 2023-24 Community Grant grant program for non-profits

Douglas County has opened its grant cycle, giving all not-for-profit agencies a chance to apply for funding. All interested must complete and submit a grant application. Funding this year is limited and not all requests will be granted or fully funded.

Volunteer drivers needed for South Lake Tahoe Senior Nutrition program

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program in South Lake Tahoe continues to have a great need for community volunteer drivers to help deliver lunchtime meals to homebound seniors and other vulnerable residents. The meals are prepared by the Senior Nutrition Program and the volunteers deliver those meals.
Most volunteers are asked to help one day a week, though more is appreciated. Drivers cover an assigned route, delivering meals between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., starting at the Senior Center in South Lake Tahoe.

CARSON CITY, Nev. - What a unique and opportunistic employment position nursing students are in at Western Nevada College (WNC). Instead of visiting potential employers for job interviews, the hospitals and healthcare facilities came to them this week for WNC Nursing Program's annual Job Fair.
But that was only part of the three-hour event in the Cedar Building. One hundred Registered Nursing (RN) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students also received professional development information and advice as well.

Winter is in full force in Tahoe, and with it comes an influx of eager snow-players. Sledding and snow tubing are sure to be among the winter activities that families pursue, and like many contact sports, the risk of injury is increased.
Falling off a sled can result in injuries including bruises, cuts and broken bones, and commonly, concussions. Other common sledding-related injuries include solid organ injuries, vertebral fractures, and chest trauma. Sledders can get seriously hurt if their sled hits a stationary object, such as a rock or a tree.
Lane shifts on US95 south of Gardnerville as NDOT makes roadside drainage repairs

Lane shifts will take place on US-395 south of Gardnerville from February 20-March 3 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) repairs roadside erosion.
Reduced lanes and speed limits and ramp closures will be in place on I-580 and US-395 near the Reno spaghetti bowl Saturday, Feb. 18 as roadway striping is refreshed.
Beginning Monday, Feb. 20 through March 3, northbound US-395 near Rockbottom Road will be shifted to use the southbound passing lane on weekdays between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. The primary southbound travel lane will remain open.
Barton Health ER nurse helps save woman on flight to Hawaii

When a nurse on vacation travels to Hawaii, the last thing they'd expect is to be called into service on the airplane trip over. But that is exactly what happened to Daryl Braga of South Lake Tahoe.
Braga was seated and watching an in-flight movie with his wife and daughter on a flight from Sacramento to Maui when a flight attendant hurriedly ran by his aisle seat. Unlike in the movies, there was no overhead page asking for medical personnel, but he knew to go to the action and let them know of his qualifications.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The healthy snowpack in the Sierra could get more added to it as a cold and snowy weather pattern looks to be setting in after the holiday weekend. Until then, it's a slow and gradual warming trend.
According to Tahoe Weather, the hype is already building for the cold and snowy pattern that could last through the end of February, and possibly into early March.
Sunday and Monday will be sunny and near 50 degrees, so enjoy it while you can!

Woman sentenced to 32.5 years after Tahoe drug bust that led to deputies' fentanyl exposure

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - One of the women involved in a series of drug sales that led to five Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) deputies being exposed to fentanyl in October is heading to prison. Regina Rojas, who was 35 at the time of her 2022 arrest, was sentenced to an aggregate term of 32.5 years with a minimum parole eligibility of 12 years and four months.
Rojas is from Rancho Cordova, Calif.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Women's Community Fund has announced it has $100,000 to donate back to the nonprofits of the community, and the grant cycle is now open.
Nonprofits that serve the South Shore of Lake Tahoe are eligible to apply.
The focus and impact grants are set for specific areas of need that were voted on by members. The areas of need for these grants much match the focus of the projects in the applications received. They can be found in the photo above, or on the website www.tahoewomenscommunityfund.org.
City Council commits over $850,000 to microtransit in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The successful multi-agency partnership that brought Lake Link Microtransit Service to South Lake Tahoe and Stateline will be continuing. The City of South Lake Tahoe contributed $150,000 for the 2022-23 pilot year, and the city council Tuesday committed another $200,000 - $150,000 for the 2023-24 service year, and $50,000 for the remainder of the fiscal year 2023 since the original agreement ended in June, the city's fiscal year ends September 30.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Looks for good summer help? The Tahoe Learning Haven is looking for 20 businesses to participate in a student job fair on Wednesday, May 10 at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe. The fair is for teens ages 14-18. It will be from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The students will be prepared with resumes and will be motivated and ready to interview. They will be prepared and ready to WOW business owners!

Family of Kris Jackson settles for $4.5M in civil lawsuit against City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe and the parents of Kris Jackson have reached a $4.5 million settlement.
Jackson, who was 22 at the time, was shot by a South Lake Tahoe police officer as he exited a motel room by a rear window at the Tahoe Hacienda Inn on June 15, 2015.
City Attorney Heather Stroud announced the settlement at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Harveys Lake Tahoe has announced Kane Brown is bringing his Drunk or Dreaming Tour to the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on Friday, September 1 at 7 p.m.
Presale tickets for the CMT and American Music Award winner go on sale this week - presale February 16 and to the public February 17. They can be purchased HERE.
The 29-year-old Brown joins Old Dominion and Illenimum for acts booked for the popular outdoor venue on the South Shore at Harveys.

Noble Studios is celebrating a decade of providing pro-bono digital marketing services to Nevada nonprofits with another request for applications for its 2023 grant cycle. To date, Noble Studios has given more than $1 million in promotional benefits. Organizations ranging from national park foundations to environmental causes, museums, education, and fair housing have been part of the “Noble Deeds” program since 2013.

The popular annual event allows guests to experience 20 family-owned wineries throughout El Dorado County, with each winery offering signature food and wine tastings, reserve wines, and other surprises. After a switch to a reservation-based event in 2021, Passport will return to its original Open House format.
