Escaped bear cub still on the loose in South Lake Tahoe, but search parties are discouraged

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Seiad, the orphaned bear cub that escaped from Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC), is still missing. The cub arrived at LTWC in December from the Seiad area in Siskiyou County in Northern California. The cub is about 12-13 months old and gained about 25-26 pounds since arrival and weighs about 50 pounds. He is healthy, has no medical issues, and has lots of survival skills.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe fire agencies have been asking for the public's help in keeping the basin's 4,097 hydrants clear of snow this winter, a daunting task. A cleared fire hydrant allows firefighters quicker access to much-needed water in the case of an emergency.
While many have taken the challenge and kept the hydrant closest to their home clear, one South Lake Tahoe man takes on dozens by himself every winter.

Warming temperatures appear across the region Monday but it is shortlived as the next system arrives Monday afternoon. This system will produce strong, chilly west-to-northwest winds along with chances for light snowfall. Wintry

The South Lake Tahoe Republican Women Federated hosted its February luncheon and meeting featuring guest speakers Nevada State Controller Andy Matthews, and Tamara Wallace, South Lake Tahoe city councilmember.
As Nevada’s State Controller, Matthews is acting as the Chief Fiscal Officer for the State. Mr. Matthews spoke to the group about increasing government transparency and accountability in governmental financial matters. One transparency goal would be to develop a plan to put all government spending online.

This new range-topping trim of the redesigned Sequoia is overpriced and lacks the outright luxury quality it aspires to. Toyota finally did it, twice! Not only did they release an all-new Tundra pickup this past year, but they also replaced the aging Sequoia SUV. Both existing models had been in service since before the housing and financial crisis, which is to say a long time. For younger people to relate to just how vast that amount of time is, the previous generation had been on sale since before the MCU even existed; Think about that for a second and it ages the siblings dramatically.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) are asking for the public’s help in locating a young, orphaned black bear that has escaped from LTWC’s facility on Al Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe where it had been rehabilitating since mid-December.
The 13-month-old male black bear weighs approximately 50 pounds, is microchipped, and has a visible, metal tag in its right ear numbered 1028. The bear escaped from LTWC’s outdoor enclosure Thursday evening, Feb. 9, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has snowed a lot in South Lake Tahoe this season, and the record-setting snow hasn't ended yet. Caltrans District 3 is responsible for clearing the snow off the state roads, 1,330 lane miles worth at Lake Tahoe, some of those on the South Shore.
As the highway goes through the community, snow cannot be stored on the sides of the four- and five-lane road as it can elsewhere as businesses and homes line those sides. Instead, it is trucked to the end of Sierra Boulevard to the Caltrans snow dump.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This week has been a great glimpse of what lies ahead this spring, but winter is still here and this weekend will show that, although briefly. Friday is on the mild side around Lake Tahoe as our net weather system moves on down the California coast.
Expect light hit-or-miss snow showers and gusty Sierra winds Friday night into Saturday. There may be some travel issues, but otherwise, the storm won't be full of headaches and large amounts of snow and there is a 60 percent chance of snow in South Lake Tahoe.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An upgrade to the safety features of the Apple Watch and iPhone 14s is providing false calls to the 911 dispatch center in South Lake Tahoe as well as those in other ski areas.
This new software upgrade is meant to detect car crashes and automatically alert 911 dispatchers. It is so sensitive though, when a skier or snowboarder falls in the snow, the device calls for help, thinking the user has been hurt.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - First it was a headline in Fodor's in November, suggesting people avoid visiting Lake Tahoe to give it a break. They had put the region on a list of natural attractions that could use a break, proclaiming that "Lake Tahoe has a people problem."
In SFGate on Wednesday, the headline read "Don't drive to Tahoe on any Friday in February, travel experts say." Their research with WAZE revealed searches to South Lake Tahoe from the Bay Area jumped more than 70 percent on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in January when compared to other days.

USFS: Survey detects 36 million dead trees in California with 1.4 million in El Dorado County

A report from the USDA Forest Service reveals about 36.3 million trees across 2.6 million acres of federal, state, and private land died in California in 2022. This year, the central Sierra Nevada Range and areas further north showed the highest mortality rates with true firs being the most impacted.
In El Dorado County, an estimated 1.4 million trees died with an estimated 78,000 acres having tree mortality. The county with the most dead trees is Siskiyou with an estimated 4.1 million on 310,000 acres, followed by Trinity with 3.3 million, and Placer County with 3 million dead trees.

The Tahoe Fund Winter Photo Contest has a winner. Jeff Bender's photo at the Upper Eagle Point Campground near Emerald Bay as the winner.
The photo was taken in November after an early-season snowstorm. Jeff, who often snowshoes in this area, said, "I have been to this spot recently and the bench is totally covered in snow now. You would never know it's there!"
Jeff grew up in Southern California and spent every summer in Tahoe vacationing with his family. After a lifelong love of this special place, he now calls Tahoe home.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In an examination of housing in South Lake Tahoe, one needs to look at many moving parts from regulations to land availability to affordability. In the second in a series, we will be looking at affordable housing projects in the city, those that have been completed, in the works, and planned.
People struggle both to find a place to live as well as paying for it, not only in South Lake Tahoe but across the country. Millions struggle monthly just to pay rent.

Raley's to leave their Village Center location in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif - The Raley's in the Village Shopping Center at Stateline in South Lake Tahoe will be leaving that location. The lease expires on June 30, 2023, and after a year of negotiations, the landlord and grocery store could not come to an agreement on lease terms.
Raley's has had stores in South Lake Tahoe for 60 years and will continue with its location at the "Y" on Emerald Bay Road.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The women of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) are dedicated to serving others, especially in their efforts to enhance the lives of women and youth both in our community and the world. It is a service organization that through its fundraising activities provides scholarships to women and young girls to enhance their ability to succeed academically. In addition, the organization funds and participates in many local school events that benefit the youth of our community.
One area of planned prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT) may continue prescribed fire operations this week at Lake Tahoe. Conditions and weather permitting, the Nevada Division of Forestry may burn hand piles near Incline Village beginning tomorrow, Feb. 7, 2023. Smoke will be present.
The one area scheduled for treatment is the Bon Pland Pile Burn area south of Incline Village on SR28. 20 acres of hand piles are slated to burn between February 7-10. Ignition is planned between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., with smoke possibly present until 5 p.m.
Hilary T. McDonnell ~ 1964 - 2023

On Sunday, January 29, 2023, Hilary T. McDonnell, passed away peacefully at the age of fifty-eight. She was born in Pasadena, Calif. to Michele Vayssie and Bruce Petke. Though she was adopted at birth by Clair and Frank Hall, she reunited with her birth parents in South Lake Tahoe when she was 25.
