New world record white fir over 265 ft tall found in the Caldor Fire burn scar

A mere four days before the Caldor Fire erupted in Grizzly Flats, Calif. in August of 2021, our friend, the tall tree hunter Michael Taylor, emailed us that he had located “a special grove of towering white fir” as he was scanning the LiDAR imagery for Eldorado National Forest in the vicinity of Pollock Pines outside Lake Tahoe. Excited by the prospect of surveying the previously unknown and exceedingly tall white firs, he wrote, “We should go there ASAP.”

On Saturday, June 22, the Sierra Club will be at the Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) Center at 2 p.m. They will be exploring what LTWC does and the types of animals they care for. People will even meet some of their animal friends and learn about their stories.

Man who set three fires near Echo Lake in 2020 pleads guilty

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Douglas Gregory Edwards, 37, formerly of Berkeley, pleaded guilty Tuesday to setting fire to federal land in the Lake Tahoe area three years ago.

On July 5, 2020, Edwards set three separate fires in the forest and near hiking trails - the Echo Fire, the Upper Fire, and Lake Fire. At the time of the fires, campfires were restricted, and smoking was prohibited except inside of a vehicle or other designated areas.

Fatal crash at US50/SR28

9AM UPDATE 7/19: The Nevada State Police has released a preliminary report on Tuesday's fatal collision. On July 18 at approximately 1:43 p.m., troopers responded to the crash at the intersection of US50 and SR28. An Amador Stagecoach tour bus with 17 passengers was traveling westbound on US50 when an SUV traveling southbound on SR 28 made a left onto US50 east to Carson City. For unconfirmed reasons, the two vehicles collided.

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day Strike Team Event

Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week celebrated in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision (PPPS) Week is July 17-21, and to get the week started off, El Dorado County's Chief Probation Officer Brian Richart cooked a big breakfast for staff on Monday.

Richart's department is 122 strong with staff on both the west and east slopes of the county. Since 2014 Richart has cooked up a big breakfast for staff, and he will repeat what he did in South Lake Tahoe on Monday and again on Thursday on the West Slope.

Tahoe Improv Players celebrate 30 years with special community shows

“It’ll be a blast to the past!” says Gerry Orton, director of the Tahoe Improv Players. Orton, along with Frank Riley, co-founded ComedySportz Lake Tahoe in 1993. The troupe evolved into the Tahoe Improv Players in 1997.

Angel of Tahoe to be honored posthumously for contributions to Lake Tahoe Community College

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care executive director to step down

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - After seventeen months of service to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC), Heidi Volkhardt Allstead will be leaving as the nonprofit's executive director, effective July 25, 2023.

In the last five years, LTWC has experienced momentous growth — transitioning from its Cherry Hills location, moving to a new 27-acre parcel, and completing construction on the 5,000-square-foot hospital and rehabilitation building, in addition to 10 animal enclosures.

Prescribed fire operations to continue near Fallen Leaf Lake

USFS to begin thinning trees near Watson Lake on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is scheduled to begin mechanical fuels reduction (forest thinning) operations this week on approximately 274 acres near Watson Lake on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. This fuels reduction work is part of the Carnelian Hazardous Fuels Reduction & Healthy Forest Restoration Project that aims to reduce the risk of severe wildfires and create healthier forests in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Heat wave continues around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Triple-digit heat will be continuing for much of the upcoming week in the lower elevations, with upper-80s and a couple of 90s for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Fire weather concerns increase the next few days, with isolated dry thunderstorms possible tonight and enhanced breezes Monday and Tuesday. Isolated thunderstorm chances continue each afternoon and evening through Wednesday.

Eagle on 18th hole gets Steph Curry the win at American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Huge crowds were par for the course this week as the 34th annual American Century Championship (ACC) was held at Edgewood Tahoe. It came down to the last hole to separate the two leaders, Mardy Fish, and Steph Curry. The Golden State Warriors Guard Curry had an eagle on 18 to become only the fifth active player, the first since then-Tennessee Titans placekicker Al del Greco won in 2000, and the first African American, to win the popular tournament. He had two fourth-place finishes in the past.

MasterCraft at Lake Tahoe supported its Surf to Save Lives campaign

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - MasterCraft has been involved in the American Century Championship (ACC) for a few years now, offering celebrities and players the opportunity to go out on their boats between rounds. This year, celebrities could enjoy their time on the water while also supporting a great cause. The ‘Surf to Save Lives’ campaign was launched in May by MasterCraft to raise funds and awareness for the St. Jude mission.

They had a large display of boats near the 17th tee all week, as well as rides on the lake.

Pair arrested after armed robbery at Douglas County casino

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Two men have been arrested as suspects in a Douglas County casino armed robbery. On Friday, July 14 at 4:57 a.m., two suspects entered the C.O.D. Casino in Minden, Nev., and were able to get away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Casino employees immediately called 911.

Steph Curry in the lead after first round at the American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry opened with two birdies and an eagle in his first four holes and leads the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe after Friday's opening round.

“I knew if I could just get off to a good start that I’d have more fun out there,” the four-time NBA champion said. “And that three-hole stretch at the beginning, I went birdie-birdie-eagle, and I was feeling good.”

Curry was paired with the other Currys in the tournament, dad Dell and brother Seth. Dell scored an 18 and Seth a 5.

Heat Advisory at Lake Tahoe and surrounding region this weekend; Know signs of heatstroke, heat exhaustion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a heat advisory in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from noon on Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday. Reno and the Carson Valley will see high temperatures of 95-105 degrees, with low to mid-90s around Lake Tahoe communities.

Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur so it is important to know how to care for yourself and know the warning signals.

Changes coming to prevent misuse and abuse of Tahoe beaches

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. – News stories circled the globe after a massive amount of trash was found at Zephyr Shoals on July 5. The stories showed shocking images of volunteers and nonprofits removing thousands of pounds of litter from one Lake Tahoe beach following the July 4th holiday. The media coverage caused public outrage and drew widespread attention to the challenge of preventing litter at the iconic Sierra Nevada destination.

Celebrities excited to start the 54-hole American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The crowds are already in town for one of the most popular summer events at Lake Tahoe - the American Century Championship (ACC). This year there is a record number of celebrities at 93, and the galleries could be a record with Saturday already sold out. Last year’s attendance topped 67,000, the sixth straight year the attendance record was broken.

"I love this event so much," said four-time NBA Champ Steph Curry on Thursday. "I have fun first and foremost, but also stay competitive."

July 5 car crash in South Lake Tahoe claims second victim

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A family heading home after a fun-filled holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe was involved in the devastating collision on Pioneer Trail that killed not only a 17-year-old local man but also a three-month-old baby.

"In the blink of an eye, our lives have been forever shattered as baby Charlie, previously declared brain dead, passed away on July 11, 2023, at 8:05 p.m.," said the baby's aunt.

State of the Lake 2023 to be presented at Granlibakken

On Thursday, July 20, UC Davis TERC will be hosting the annual State of the Lake presentation at Granlibakken Tahoe located at 725 Granlibakken Road just south of Tahoe City.

TERC director Geoff Schladow will present the much anticipated State of the Lake Report. The Tahoe State of the Lake report informs nonscientists about important factors affecting the health of Lake Tahoe and provides the scientific underpinnings for restoration and management decisions within the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Carol Chaplin tapped to be Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority chair

RENO, Nev. - The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) swore in three board members and one reappointed board member. Additionally, the Board of Trustees unanimously elected Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority CEO Carol Chaplin as the Chair of the Board, Richard Jay as Vice-Chair, Jennifer Cunningham as Treasurer and Adam Kramer as Secretary for this fiscal year.

Chaplin also served as chair in 2019.

Thursday pairings for American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The 34th celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe doesn't get underway until Friday, but before that, a Celebrity Pro-Am will be held on Thursday with two shotgun start tee times.

The American Century Championship offers a purse of $600,000 and network television exposure on NBC and is the most prestigious celebrity tournament in golf. The 54-hole competition is for current and former professional athletes, entertainers, and media commentators. The tournament is contested among 90 competitors under a modified Stableford form.

Closures in place for annual Death Ride, cycling the California Alps

The premier cycling event in California, the Death Ride, will be held this Saturday, July 15. Since 1978 cyclists have been challenged to ride a route with over 14,000 feet of climbing, over 103 miles in distance, six categorized climbs, and over three mountain passes.

There are some road closures those not participating in the race need to be aware of. The event runs from 5 a.m. - 6 p.m. SR89 and SR4 will close at 5 a.m. The Monitor Pass section of SR89 re-opens to vehicles at noon. The Ebbetts Pass section on SR4 re-opens at 4 p.m.

Sand Harbor boat ramp closure Saturday morning for Trans-Tahoe race

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – The boat ramp at Sand Harbor State Park will be closed from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 to accommodate the Trans-Tahoe Relay Race. The swimmers will start their race at the beach located just south of the boat ramp at approximately 7 a.m.

The boat ramp will reopen for normal boater traffic at 8:30 a.m.
