Mast Year = Massive seed collection success for the Sugar Pine Foundation

For the Sugar Pine Foundation (SPF) this September was incredibly busy with seed collection because 2024 proved to be a mast year for sugar pines and most conifers in the Tahoe region. This is significant because reforestation starts with collecting seeds.

A “mast year” is when an entire population of a certain tree or shrub produces a large amount of fruit, seeds, or nuts, which are collectively referred to as mast. (The term "mast" comes from the Old English word mæst, which refers to the nuts of forest trees that accumulate on the ground.)

Letter to the Editor - Tahoe Township Justice of the Peace

Dear Editor: I write to encourage my fellow Tahoe Township residents to be engaged and vote in all local elections in November. The contested races where one can have the greatest impact are those with the smallest number of eligible voters. One race I think is of particular importance is Justice of the Peace for Tahoe Township. Column: How to talk with loved ones about suicidal thoughts: a tough but necessary conversation

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in persons aged 10 to 34. Studies show that approximately 15 percent of adolescents have thought about suicide within the past year. Rates in adults tend to be lower, at about 5 percent. Luckily, not every thought leads to suicidal actions, but that leaves the difficult question of when to be very worried versus just concerned.

Letter: Resident says she supports Measure N to see more neighbors and residents

I'm considering petitioning to rename my road "Diana Ave". For three full blocks, I am one of only two occupied houses on my street, and the only homeowner. When I sit on the front porch of my charming little A-frame, most of the people who wave at me are either visitors or bears. That’s why I’m a vocal proponent for Yes on Measure N; I am a local who wants vibrant neighborhoods and affordable housing.
