Robert (Bobby) Rucker Minghini was born in Snowshoe, West Virginia on June 24, 1986. He moved to South Lake Tahoe, California in 2004 to attend college and pursue his dream to become a professional snowboarder.

Bobby lived to ride. He was a long-time athlete on the ISTC and proudly represented his country as a member of the US Snowboarding Team. He co-founded and operated Tahoe Wakebusters with his brother, Jarod. He brightened everyone’s day with his winning smile and genuine love for people, especially children. Friends always joked that all we need is to “Rent-a-Bobby”.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - After a marathon Douglas County Commissioner meeting at Lake Tahoe Thursday, the commissioners did not vote to ban vacation home rentals (VHRs) but they did give staff input on updating the current ordinance.

Commissioner Walt Nowosad made the motion to disband the VHR program and for staff to bring back an ordinance to eliminate them. It failed to get a second and therefore the VHRs remain.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Firefighters are at the scene of a fire in the Caldor Fire burn scar outside the boundary of Sierra-at-Tahoe in Sayles Canyon.

The 20' x 20' fire has a line around it, and crews and extinguishing any additional hot spots. It is in the Eldorado National Forest.

At the time the cause is still under investigation.

The Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority (RTAA) celebrated important milestones that will redefine air travel for generations to come. Airport officials were joined by U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, U.S. Congressman Mark Amodei, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve, and other local officials to break ground on the Ticketing Hall expansion project at the airport. This is the first piece of the MoreRNO construction program, which will take place over the next several years.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - The Tahoe Fund and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) will celebrate the completion of the Upper Tyrolian Trail on Tuesday, October 18 at 11:30 a.m. with a grand opening event. Volunteers, supporters, and donors will gather for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebratory ride on the new singletrack trail, which offers panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and jumps and berms to help riders practice their skills.

With Fire Prevention Week in full swing this week, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) would like to remind us about the importance of fire prevention in the home. The theme this year “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” is a good reminder that prevention and advanced planning are essential when it comes to your ability to get out of a home quickly during a fire.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) is reminding residents and contractors that the annual grading and digging season for permitted projects will end on Saturday, October 15, after which all construction sites must be appropriately winterized to protect Lake Tahoe’s famed water quality.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The next Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education meeting will be starting earlier than normal this week with the public interviews of two people who applied for the open trustee position for Area #2, Jon Hetherton and Leonard Carter. A "failure to elect" notice went out when no candidate filed to run for the Nov. 8 election. That portion of the meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. They will accept oral or written public input on this item.

The board is scheduled to deliberate and vote when the interviews conclude.

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Two CAL FIRE personnel from the Amador-El Dorado Unit (AEU) assigned to the Placerville Fire Center were seriously injured Sunday evening after one of the department's vehicles caught on fire.

On October 9 at approximately 7 p.m., the two men were inside the center on Fair Lane when a vehicle caught fire and they ran outside. There were reports of an explosion and black smoke could be seen from a distance.

One of the injured men is originally from South Lake Tahoe.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - A collaboration of public and private sector organizations in the greater Tahoe region is inviting residents, community members, and stakeholders interested in sustainable management of outdoor recreation and tourism to take part in an online survey and public workshops later this month. A 36-year-old man from Stateline, Nevada died in a crash on SR4 on Monday evening according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on October 10, a male motorcyclist was riding his black Harley-Davidson motorcycle on SR-4 eastbound, west of Upper Cascade Creek at an unknown speed. The motorcyclist failed to safely negotiate the sharp curve in the roadway, according to the CHP report. He traversed to the north side of the roadway, was fully ejected from his motorcycle, and landed on the rocky dirt shoulder.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Spooktacular Halloween at Zephyr Point is a family-friendly evening benefiting Zephyr Point's Youth Camps. It will be held on Sunday, October 30 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

There will be a haunted house, trick-or-treating, pumpkin painting, bounce house, face painting, costume contests, hay rides, and more.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The cost is $5 per person with a $20 parking fee. All activities are free once in.

Nevada’s non-restricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,208,504,956 for the month of August 2022, a gain of 3.53 percent from the same period in 2021. The South Shore Lake Tahoe casinos had a "win" up 26.84 percent from the same period last year with their gaming revenue of $29,977,316, according to the State's monthly gaming revenue report. Some of August 2021 was affected by the Caldor Fire.

Mazda now has a confusingly named CX-50 alongside their excellent CX-5. This one's even better.

A new crossover SUV from Mazda, the maker of some of the best affordable vehicles on the planet. They curiously already make the CX-5, so what does adding an extra digit do exactly? It's eerily similar, but improves upon what was already the best driving and finished vehicle in its class. In all rights, the CX-50 should cannibalize CX-5 sales; It's that good.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Warm afternoons and chilly mornings will persist at least through next weekend. Aside from a chance for a few late afternoon showers for the Sierra and western NV again on Monday, little to no precipitation is in the forecast for the next week or two, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

A blocking area of high pressure is forecast to remain along the west coast with nearly dry conditions over the next couple of weeks.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An assortment of decorated floats and vehicles, a drum corps, dance and cheer teams, and other walkers joined the South Tahoe High Homecoming Parade through town on Friday. The theme of this year's parade was "Disney."

As is the new tradition, elementary schools and the middle school each participated as well. Alumni and the South Lake Tahoe community were invited to join South Tahoe High students, staff, faculty, school board members, and LTUSD Superintendent Cutler.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Lake Tahoe is famous for its blueness. The growth and spread of algae are one reason blue lakes around the world can go green in the summer. Algae forms the base of many food webs, and most algae in Lake Tahoe, though sometimes unattractive, does not pose a health risk to people or animals that enjoy the Lake. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a different story. HABs are often mistaken for harmless types of algae or cyanobacteria that look like algae, which naturally occur in Tahoe and can be found clinging to rocks and washing up on beaches.

Author Lori Howell Thompson, known for her book "Living in Harmony with the Wildlife in Lake Tahoe," will be signing copies of all her books at the Welcome Home Shoppe on October 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Besides her book "Living in Harmony with the Wildlife," she will have copies of her children's books "An Adventure with Joshua and Hoppy the Frog" and "An Adventure with Joshua and Rocky the Otter".

Lori will also have her thriller novel "Reflections". Her novel has been adapted into a screenplay that has won many awards.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In observation of the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, both South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) and Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) held open houses Saturday.

The SLTFR Station 3 had tables set up for Fire Wise communities, Tahoe PAWS/TLC 4 Furry Friends, as well as valuable information for being fire-safe, evacuation materials, and lots of free swag including fire hats for the kids. The crew put on a free pancake breakfast as well.

There are eleven people vying for a spot on the city council in South Lake Tahoe. With only three open spots, it is not easy to narrow down the choices.

South Tahoe Now reached out to all 11 candidates and received replies on all questions from just seven of them. Each day this week their answers have been posted and today is the final day.
